In this Episode, God has a conversation with God’s self (The Trinity) about how and why humanity doesn’t seem to be on board with being self-giving, compassionate, and committed to helping make the whole creation what was planned in the beginning. So, God then has a conversation with Abraham about the two of them entering into an agreement (covenant and circumcision) that will make Abraham the example and leader of a new, positive, and helpful kind of humanity. Finally, since Abe has agreed to the covenant and, reluctantly to circumcision, he and God have one more conversation. This time, it’s a negotiation about how God plans to deal with Sodom and Gomorrah.

We hope you enjoy it.

This story is unique in that it isn’t really based on a particular Bible passage or book. It is in fact, one of several documents accidently unearthed by a questionable archeological expedition. This, like several of these archeological documents, is a letter written by a well-known Biblical character.

Since there doesn’t seem to be any real information in the Hebrew and Christian scriptures about the origin of the institution of marriage, I have to wonder just when and why it actually came about.

I guess the only way to know the answers to those questions is to consult an expert. Luckily, the following ancient letter was written by the very first marriage expert and does a pretty good job of answering most of the important questions about marriage, both in ancient times and in ours.

The Great Heroes of Israel Collection - #5

This story is based on the book of Jonah in the Hebrew Scriptures. It tells about how a man named Jonah received a job offer from God, how he tried to opt out of the opportunity, and how persuasive God’s hiring approach can be.

This story is based on chapter 11 in the Second Book of Samuel in the Hebrew Scriptures. The story tells about how David, the second and greatest king of Israel, got entangled in a pretty thorny situation with a woman named Bathsheba, and how he secretly tried to cover it up. It also tells about his coverup backfired and made everything worse, and how God laid out for David the harsh realities and the long term consequences of his really unscrupulous decisions and actions.

This story is based on chapter 3 in the Hebrew book of Exodus. In it, Moses, the liberator of the Hebrew people, experiences a very unusual visit from God and a rather persuasive invitation to become the leader, hero, and deliverer of the Jewish people from their bondage in Egypt.

I have to wonder why Moses was picked to be such a great leader. In fact, I wonder how God chooses any of the leaders, prophets and other people who are equipped to do such heroic and great deeds for the benefit of the world. Is there a training program, an internship, or a form that you fill out to apply for the job? Just what kind of criteria does God look for in a leader?

This story is based on chapter 18 in the Hebrew book of Genesis in which Abraham, the great patriarch of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, and God enter into a pretty heated negotiation about the fate of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah.

I wonder if God ever has to struggle with whether to be loving and merciful or just and decisive when it comes to responding to human misconduct and destructive behavior. Just how does God go about making the right decision? Does God have someone to talk to about this kind of stuff?

According to chapter 12 in the book of Genesis, God appeared to a man named Abram who lived in Mesopotamia and told him to pack up his wife, servants, extended family and everything he had and move west. God didn’t specify exactly where he was going but promised to work that out after everybody got on the road. God also promised him that when he and his entourage arrived there would be great perks. Not to mention that the world would be a much better place because he did what God told him to do. So Abram did it.

A significant number of years pass without any of the things God promised him coming to pass, and a lot of what does happen to him over that period isn’t very pleasant. So, I have to wonder what Abram must have been thinking after all that time passed without any of the promised pay-off. And, I wonder what he might have wanted to say to God if he had the opportunity.

Some of the biggest businesses in our economy are based on people’s appetites for violence and destruction. Many psychologists and sociologists have written treatises and conducted studies attempting to prove that human beings have instinctual primitive drives for violence and “blood lust”. If that is really true then were those drives a part of God’s creative design? How did violence become a part of the human experience anyway, and why?

Well, the deranged story of Cain and Abel has some interesting insights into those questions.

Newton's law of gravitation: If you are standing on the earth and you throw something up in the air, the consequence of that action is that it must come down, every time. Does what we choose and what we do in life have a consequence every time?

Well, at the beginning of this whole creation story God told Adam and Eve that the consequence for eating the forbidden fruit would be their death. However, as we come to the close of the story, that death consequence doesn’t actually happen. So, there must be a significant difference between Newton’s law of gravity and God’s law of spiritual gravity. What is the difference and why?

This story picks up right after the creation is finished, when everything is perfect. God had created human beings and had something made in God’s own image to love and be in relationship with, and, human beings had an intimate, loving and ever present relationship with God, not to mention the most perfect place in all of the creation to live and share their lives with each other and God.

This should have been a story about how wonderful life was for Adam and Eve and God. But that isn’t how it turns out. In the midst of perfect, something went wrong. What was it?
