Not a story from one of my books or blogs, but one I wrote today pretty much as I recorded it. It is dedicated to my brother Kenny, who is going through hard times. The song is Bruce Sprigsteen’s ‘No Surrender’, which is pretty much how it was for Kenny and me. I usually use my own songs, but this one told our story perfectly. None of my talented producers were around, and the whole thing is one take. Rough, raw and honest. But so is the story, about the foolishness of letting politics tear apart friends and family. A holiday look back at the Christmas garden we had at home every year when I was a kid. It was a thing of beauty, although I may be the only one who thought so. The ‘cast features the song Christmas in Copenhagen, 1996, which I proudly refer to as the ‘most depressing Christmas song ever’. It’s actually me attempting to say “I love you” in Danish and I like to tell myself that part of the charm is that I’m so terrible at it! This one was inspired by listener Jim Lind and his fiance Tammy Petersen, who like one of my older songs written about the Danish island of Bornholm. The recording comes from 1996, live in a hotel courtyard with my buddy Adam Williamson watching the DAT player to make sure that my guitar and voice, which are plugged into the same little amp, don’t get too hot!
