With Dyslexia Awareness month now in full swing this weeks podcast episode I dig deep into the purpose and reasons behind me doing what I do.
How society views, perceives and understands dyslexia hugely shapes how successful a person can be. This is the biggest issue when it comes to dyslexia and it remains so misunderstood. This dyslexia awareness month I intend to do all I can to show up and help people

In this episode I reflecting on being “that parent” when raising and advocating for dyslexic children, and sharing insights from the Positive Dyslexia Conference in Twickenham where I was a keynote speaker.
As parents of dyslexic children, we’re often told not to be “that parent” – the one who pushes, questions, and challenges. But what if advocating for your child’s needs isn’t about being difficult, but about love, support, and preventing disengagement from education? In this episode, I unpick my own parenting journey, explore when I had to step up and push for change, and share strategies for working with schools and teachers instead of against them.
I also talk about:
If you’re a parent of a dyslexic child, an educator, or simply curious about the lived experience of dyslexia, this episode is for you.

This week, I’m talking about the first full week of term—the one where clubs start, routines get real, and tiredness hits. Inside:
dyslexiclifewithjorees.com
* CPD & practising certificate — head down, training done; socials a bit quieter because… bandwidth is real.
* Uni send-off — the invisible mental load we carry for our kids (and the space that returns once a big milestone passes).
* Masking at home — how strong family structures can hide genuine needs at school, and why proactive systems beat firefighting.
* Parenting theme for the year — keynotes on raising successful dyslexics and protecting mental health/anxiety:
+ 18 Sept 2025 — 2nd Twickenham Dyslexia Conference, The Exchange, Twickenham. Tickets/info: Positive Dyslexia conference page
or Eventbrite listing
.
positivedyslexia.co.uk+1
+ 27 Sept 2025 — Bell House Dyslexia Fair 2025, Dulwich. Details: Bell House event page
or Eventbrite
.
Bell House+1
* The “over-delivery” debate — after my GCSE post picked up traction, I unpack what I mean: when effort ≠ attainment, compensatory strategies, and working with (not against) a dyslexic/ADHD brain. Chime in with your view!
* Book progress — back into a writing rhythm on navigating the education system; aiming to pitch to a publisher.

This week, I tried something new: recording the podcast on video and streaming at the same time. Why? Because the messy, real-time reality of dyslexia + ADHD is worth normalising.
Inside the episode:
If you’re navigating school transitions, GCSE season, or simply trying to keep your ducks (chaotic as they are) swimming in the same pond — this one’s for you.

In this episode you get to meet the truly inspirational Jayne Derbyshire.
Boss lady extrodinare!
Jayne tells us all about her life as a performer, before she become the proud owner of Spotlight Iow Ltd and how she runs this as a professional theatre company along with 5 stage schools.
She shares how the pandemic hit her business hard - but how the tragic loss of one of her family members changed her entire perspective on life.
Jayne also tells us how the coffee bubble was born!
Literally bursting with inspiration this episode is a MUST listen... grab a proper cup of coffee and strap ya self in for a brilliant episode.
In this episode I share my experiences of self belief, I talking running weight loss and weight gain and goal setting.
As its mothers day we thought we would celebrate motherhood - step mums, mums who had babies by IVF, surrogate mums, mums who were lucky and just became mums, aunties and grandma's who are mums, and dads that take on the role of mums when they are no longer here.
... then there are the mums who have adopted, and did not start with their baby at 0 and what about the mothers who are mothers but don't have a child to show because they have been forced to give their child away for adoption?
In this episode I introduce you to the amazing Ordinary Pioneer Nik Attfield. Nik gives a voice to the hundreds and thousands of women who were forced to give up their babies in the 50s, 60s and 70s and educates us on the differences between adoption then and now. She shines a light on the complexities of adoption. She shares her personal story of being adopted and adopting 2 daughters. Its an utterly beautiful conversation, intimate and thought provoking.
Nik is the most brilliant Mum - and full of so much wisdom and knowledge on this subject. I feel sure you will leave this episode feeling richer for listening and im very grateful she was able to share her experiences with us.
In this episode I am joined by the wonderful Natasha Whitty who shares her experience of teaching in key Stage 1 for 16 years.
Natasha loved teaching, and was the kind of teacher you would LOVE to teach your children. Some personal circumstances led to her reevaluating what was important in life, and at the start of the pandemic Natasha made moves to create her own child minding business.
She is now the proud owner of High Park Hedgehogs, a thriving child minding business with a waiting list. A really inspirational episode, and especially for anyone who has been in a career for many years and believes that they are stuck... Natasha is a brilliant of example of how there is always another way and of how you really can create a life you love.
In this episode we celebrate International womens day with the awesome Nikita.
What an ordinary pioneer she is. Nikita lives in London, a single mum of 2 girls, who has her own inspirational story, but also empowers and gives a voice to women bringing new life into the world.
Nikita tells us all about her life as a doula, and how she helps women make informed choices when giving birth. Nikita has a wealth of knowledge and experience she shares we us!
Strong women rise up and shape more strong women and Nikita is a shining example of this!
In this episode I am excited to have had a wonderful conversation with Ordinary Pioneer Claudine Nightingill-Rane, founder of Seascapeblue.
Claudine is a body confidence coach, working primarily with women and teenagers to feel comfortable in the skin they are in. Claudine share's her own story, from growing up and never feeling her body was right, to being at her lowest weight when she got married, to now where she worries little about body shape and works with other women to support them in developing the love and confidence for their bodies they deserve.
Claudine is also an avid sea swimmer and she shares her experiences as to how this is such a liberating experience. She tell us her top tips for getting started with this and why she thinks everyone should give sea swimming a try.
A lovely relaxed conversation to enjoy with a cuppa!
I am so honoured to be introducing you to this Ordinary Pioneer, Amy Paul.
Amy now lives in Cornwall with her husband and 3 of her children. We find out how they ended up there and why they actively choose to live a life in the present moment.
Amy also tells the intimate and personal story of her baby Chloe, who passed away at 5 days old. A beautiful and humbling conversation.
An episode that will leave you realising that no matter how short life is, time can stand still, you can still make beautiful memories and every moment count.
It certainly suddenly left me feeling I needed to look at life differently. And Ricky Gervais is right! Hope is Everywhere, as Amy fills us with hope that even in the most painful of times there are glimmers of light.
In this episode I introduce you to Ordinary Pioneer Linsey Briggs.
I met Linsey just over a year ago when she joined one of my courses where I support parents of children who are dyslexic.

Stanley is autistic with a profile of pathological demand avoidance (PDA) and the normal school system was so stressful for him. At my time of meeting her, Linsey had just made the courageous decision to remove him from education and unschool him at home.
I have followed Linsey on instagram for the last year watching as she has navigated her way through finding a way to educate Stanley that is right for him, always putting his needs first. Their journey is ongoing.
