According to Dr. David Dunning, a psychology professor at Cornell, we are not good judges of our own competency. In other words, we aren’t very skilled at telling if we’re good at something. This suggests we may not be terribly good at telling when something we’ve written is good or bad. But studies suggest that what our peers think of our efforts is a much more accurate assessment than any we can make on our own.

Voice might seem like an all or nothing proposition. Either you have it, or you don’t. Fortunately for all writers, that’s the farthest thing from the truth. Yes, some voices are stronger right out of the gate, but as all writers discover, “voice” is a skill that can be pumped, primed, and polished just like any other challenging and rewarding craft.

Reading entries is not that much different from reading magazine submissions, something I had enjoyed doing years ago as editor of a national swimming magazine. If submission guidelines and contest guidelines are clear, writers know exactly what is expected and can assess their manuscript with those in mind. And general rules of writing are always important to follow. For the most part, these entries were original, and the writing was interesting and relevant to the contest’s topic.

If you’re like many writers, you probably have one or more unfinished manuscripts. These might include a current project, staring at you from your computer’s list of recent files. Perhaps they reside in files you haven’t looked at for months or years. Others may lurk in desk drawers, a closet shelf, or a box in the attic. In some cases, you tried your best and the manuscripts simply did not work.

Some things simply don’t mix well. One of these bad combinations is creativity and fear. Fear of failure. Fear of success. Fear of giving naysayers more reason to say nay. Fear that something you want so badly simply isn’t for you. Writers are often living in the midst of a maelstrom of fears, and the biggest problem with that is the fact that fear suppresses creativity.

Writing mystery and adventure stories for kids is a specific task. Many times, I’ve seen writers identify stories as belonging to a genre when the story definitely does not fit the defining features of that genre. For instance, many writers know kids like adventure (or they flatly see editors talking about adventure) so they’ll identify their story as an adventure because the characters go from one place to another.

One of the most interesting things about book genres is the potential for writing a book series. Many writers are nervous about writing a book series, especially since we’re often steered away from them. But there is good news when we look at books that sell very, very well.

When writing for kids (or even adults), one of the things that will quickly slog down a novel or short story and keep a writer from finishing happens when the writer doesn’t know what to do next. Sometimes this comes from a lack of planning and not knowing what you’re ultimately moving toward, but sometimes this happens simply because the writer doesn’t know what these characters should and would do in these circumstances. In this post, learn to develop your characters and finish your book.

Most of us know that once we reach the end of our book, we’re still a long way from finished. Not only do we need to put some serious time into revision to turn what came out of our heads into something that can go smoothly into the heads of our readers, but we also need a plan for what we’re going to do writing your book. So, part of the end of the project needs to be planning for what comes next.
