Welcome to Just Us: Before, Birth, and Beyond. We invite you to tune in for a podcast focused on perinatal and community health. In an effort to raise awareness and start a conversation about perinatal health, our hosts have joined forces with doulas, midwives, nurses, lactation consultants, physicians and more from across North Carolina to share best practices, lived experiences, and lessons learned. Just Us explores real topics and dives into what has happened, what is happening, and what can happen next in the sexual and reproductive health and wellness space. Our goal is to learn and grow together in order to take care of ourselves and each other so that we can all live our healthiest lives. Thank you for being here. Let’s get started!

Season 5, episode 2 of the Just Us podcast places an emphasis on the treatment of substance use disorder in adolescents and young adults. Psychiatrist Leeallie Carter and family medicine physician Blake Fagan discuss the interactions between human biology, adverse childhood experiences, and substance use during this developmental period. In this episode, our host Dr. Suzanne Dixon, talks to Dr. Bhaskari Burra, a MAHEC OB/GYN Fellow, about Sepsis. Sepsis is a leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality, and in this episode our speakers will discuss how to recognize it, how to respond, the sources of infection and long-term effects. In this episode, Katlyn Moss talks to Shannon Dowler, a Family Medicine physician about the recent increase in syphilis cases and what can be done to treat and prevent it. They will discuss why syphilis often goes undiagnosed and untreated, along with the barriers that health systems, clinicians, and public health professionals are currently facing in their work to control syphilis and other infectious diseases. They also talk about the special implications for pregnant patients and their babies. Dr. Dowler provides plenty of information and action items on treating syphilis as well as how it can be prevented.

Everything is connected in the digital age. How can this benefit patients who need to receive care outside of their regular provider network due to an unforeseen circumstance?In this episode, Katlyn Moss talks to Kim Webster of the North Carolina Health Information Exchange Authority about NC Health Connex, which is a database that allows patient information to be accessed across systems statewide. Katlyn and Kim will talk about how HIE works, what information is (and is not) shared, and how practices use the information. They also will tell you the next steps if your practice would like to participate in the NC Health Connex program. You’ll learn how Health Information Exchange helps patients and clinical staff when an unexpected event causes someone to visit a provider outside of their usual location. Kim will also share the crucial role HIE plays in a maternal health study that is currently taking place at the University of North Carolina.

But what about families who are affected by substance use disorder? this episode, a partnership with Project CARA, Dr. Amy Marietta, MD, Family Medicine and Olivia Caron, Pharmacist Practitioner, and Georganna Cogburn IBCLC, will talk about how to support lactation and infant feeding in patients who use substances or are being treated for SUDs. When Hurricane Helene hit Western North Carolina in the fall of 2024, many families were left without access to power and clean water for weeks or even months. This made commonplace tasks such as safely storing pumped breast milk nearly impossible. Brandi Harrison, a certified lactation consultant based in WNC, discusses her experience helping families navigate infant feeding during this crisis, and shares lessons learned to help others prepare for future disasters.

In this episode, Katlyn Moss talks to Emily Taylor from the AFE Foundation about the pregnancy complication of Amniotic Fluid Embolism, and how the AFE Foundation helps to support and educate medical professionals. Emily shares her own story about surviving AFE and how this experience inspired her to dedicate herself to raising awareness. You will learn what AFE is, why it is often difficult to diagnose, and how it affects the patient, their family, and their care team. This week we are joined by 4 RNs across the state! Katlyn Moss, BSN, RN, one of the hosts of our podcast, is the Region I Perinatal Nurse Champion. This means her job is to provide equitable and evidence based maternal health information to the western part of the state through the MHI grant. She works with 5 other Perinatal Nurse Champions across the state and this podcast highlights their shared “I Gave Birth” bracelet project. We have all heard about anemia, but have you ever thought about the significance behind treating it in a sensitive population, like pregnant mothers? Tune in as Dr. Suzanne Dixon and Katlyn Moss BSN define anemia during pregnancy; especially highlighting the importance of screening for anemia regularly.
