How one lady, overcame her negative experiences with fitness and nutrition, and found the courage to speak up and pave the way to help others succeed in a male dominated industry
In this special episode of AKE Fitness Connect we speak with Kate, who is leading a program to train and mentor women in a male dominated industry and working on her own health journey.
In 6 months, Kate has changed her relationship with fitness, food and alcohol and lost 12 kilos. We discuss Kate’s personal journey as well as deep dive into the following topics:
Training and Coordinating Women in Male Dominated Industries (4:00)
Kate shares with us her 12-year journey from a tradie in male-dominated industry to now leading a career pathway program that trains and mentors women with no mining or trade background in the mining industry.
We also talk about her recent 6-month weight-loss journey where she has lost 12 kilos (more now by the time of this release) and how her relationship with food and alcohol has changed.
The negative effects of drinking alcohol and poor nutrition (15:32)
Here we get personal and explore Kate’s upbringing on her previous eating and drinking habits and how she had to make a big shift in her lifestyle when she started to have issues with her liver.
We also talk about the real impacts on Kate’s mental well being from her previous drinking and eating habits.
The Importance of Finding the Right Support (24:01)
Kate had previously joined a gym many years ago but quit. During this time, she was coached in powerlifting and strength training. Whilst Kate loved pushing big weights, she found that the style of coaching she was receiving was not working for her, as it was too pushy, and she was not responding well to the militant language.
In Kate’s experience she has found that the Navy Cadets’ style of coaching, which was more about accountability and leadership, works better for her and she also applies this style in her leadership roles.
Kate felt judged and overwhelmed by her previous experiences with fitness, but with her current coach (me) she has enjoyed the different approach, which has involved working with her to make sustainable improvements. This also involved focusing on small steps, like eating two meals consistently every day, and Kate shares with us the importance of feeling heard and supported by your coach.
Establishing boundaries and understanding what is in and out of one's control (55:35)
In this part of the episode, we discuss the importance of setting boundaries and understanding what is and isn't in one's control.
We talk about the importance of not taking on the responsibility of fixing someone else and understanding that it is not one's role to be a hero.
As well as the importance of detaching from the idea of fixing someone else and understanding that one can still help without getting themselves in a difficult situation.
Finding One's Voice (1:06:45)
Kate shares here her journey of finding her voice and overcoming her fear of speaking up, which included proving her brain wrong and understanding that people don't always have to agree with her.
Kate departs some further insights by telling others to not give up and to take pride in every win.
When we share our stories that we can help others find their own voice.

Part 2 New Podcast Episode with special guest Rochelle Firth - From 100kg to 2-time Fitness Competitor
In this 2-part Interview we talk to PT and 2 season bodybuilding competitor Rochelle Firth. Rochelle shares intimate details about her journey from weighing over 100kg with poor fitness and nutrition habits to sustaining a healthy bodyweight and composition.
We also then explore her journey into competing and how bodybuilding has impacted other areas of her life.
Rochelle shares the good, the bad, the myths busted and the lessons that will forever shape who she is and how she chooses to live her life.
We also talk about the importance of working with a coach and realistic goals.
Rochelle is passionate in working with women, particularly young mums on getting back into the gym and building the right behaviours and attitudes towards fitness and their bodies. To work with Rochelle, you can connect with her via IG @_Just_Rocky_ and the Facebook Communities.
Key Insights – Part 2
Trying to go it alone, trying every diet or a fancy IG workout simply isn’t going to give you the results you’re seeking. There is no substitute for working with the right coach and mastering the foundational skills before stepping your game up.
Having a coach during off-season and post comp is much more important that during comp. You really do not understand how hard post comp is until you go through it. Having structure and support to focus on the right goals helps give you the bandwidth to focus on what really matters. Because if bodybuilding is all you focus on it will consume you.
Bodybuilding isn’t that easy to get into surprisingly, it is hard to find good coaches and to learn more about the sport. Take your time to understand what you need to know and the resources you’ll need. It’s a hard sport, a little brutal and resource intensive. Having the right support will help you develop a long term view and keep competing sustainable.

His best performances were: 28:40 for 10 kilometres and 2hrs 15 minutes for the marathon, which made him the 10th fastest Australian all time.

In 1985, he was involved in a tragic head on car accident that led to struggle, anxiety and chronic fatigue. This difficult time led him to looking inside for the answers he was seeking and to explore personal development. Ultimately it seeded the development of his unique practical approach to using Breathwork to help others be at their best and live life fully.
Nicholas made a huge career change after working as an architect. Following his heart he shifted from working as an architect to founding the Institute of Heart Intelligence, helping others to master stress, anxiety, depression, emotionally based illness’ and overcome life setbacks.
His work has taken him around the world 3 times; For the last 23 years Nicholas has presented Emotional Intelligence Trainings, Relationship Seminars, Practitioner Trainings, Men’s Retreats, Evening Groups, Private Consultations. Imagine not only rehabilitating from a severe injury but also coming back stronger than ever... It's possible.
In this episode we'll meet Chris and the inspirational journey he has undergone after multiple major injuries caused via serious motor vehicle incidents.
We'll also talk about how Chris now helps others as an athlete and an experienced and elite Allied Health Professional. Which includes rehabilitating others and helping them overcome major injury or degenerative conditions.
True Strength and Courage has a fine ambassador and not an episode to be missed! 🦾💪
Chris has been working in the fitness industry for 15 years; seven years as a coach/trainer and eight years as an accredited exercise physiologist.
His background is martial arts, powerlifting and bodybuilding. He also specialises in exercise interventions to improve the functional outcome of people who have sustained an acute or sub-acute injury, suffer from chronic or degenerative medical conditions and/or disabilities.
In 2008, he suffered horrific injuries as a result of a major motorbike crash where he was hit by a car running a red light. The accident resulted in him having a pelvic reconstruction and shoulder a/c joint fixation.
This has given him a lot of insight into understanding what his patients go through; trauma recovery, surgery, rehabilitation and the mental impact and strength to overcome their injuries. He manages clients in a performance based setting to allow people to reach their rehabilitation, fitness, training and sports specific goals and outcomes safely, efficiently and effectively.
Chris is a registered healthcare and DIS provider which allows him to manage clients under a MediCare Plan (GP referral), Veteran Affairs, Workers compensation, National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) or private health insurance for rebates.

In this episode we speak with the inspirational Gail Walker, Founder of The Power House Private Training Studio, Exercise Physiologist and an energy healer. Gail specialises in working with women over 40, particularly those experiencing perimenopause, menopause and post menopause.
The foundation of Gail’s coaching is "thoughts become things...choose the good ones" (Mike Dooley) and that you should be undertaking strength and conditioning training whether you're 18 or 80.
Gail is also a grandmother of 6 amazing, gorgeous, perfect humans and foster fur mum to a big, hairy, adorable German shepherd.
In terms of Gail’s personal fitness journey she has been around health and fitness all her life, including bouts in athletics, netball, basketball, squash, triathlons.
Interestingly, Gail didn't venture into a gym until she started studying Sports Science at the age of 38 as a single mum with 3 kids... one of her lecturers told her to join and gym and learn how to use it.
Gail did as she was advised… and well let’s say that she’s not a fan, however she does recognise the value of staying strong and believes that gym based training is the quickest, most effective and efficient way of building and maintaining lean muscle tissue.
3 Key Insights
1.One day you may just wake up and say “this is not enough for me” and I do not like the what I am role-modelling for my children.
Gail shares this life-changing moment with us that see her at the age of 38 completely change the trajectory of her life through health & fitness and create a conscious leadership shadow
2.There isn’t a lot of support for women undergoing perimenopause, menopause and post menopause and even less for men going through andropause.
Gail shares with us insights of this life event and how she supports clients and members in her community going through this… I particularly love her mental health wellness walks
3.The importance of strength based training, attention to rest and recovery and personal development cannot be ignored for overall health and wellbeing as we age
I feel like I say this a lot… but this episode is one of my favourites and you can get in contact with Gail via the FB Communities (of which she is a member) or via her FB Page https://www.facebook.com/thepowerhousepts
In this episode of AKE Fitness Connect with Mehtab Khan (Tabs) who has made a career change into helping others overcome burnout through hypnotherapy.
Mehtab shares with us her personal fitness journey, including competitive bodybuilding and how it became a catalyst for her finding the confidence to pursue a career aligned with her soul’s calling or deeper purpose.
Mehtab’s story is incredible, and she shares intimate details around the challenges she faced growing up in Kenya, her determination to achieve independence and create a life in Australia. She also shares with us her personal burnout story, which included working in a job that wasn’t nourishing her and overcoming workplace bullying.
What is also striking about Mehtab is the way in which she lives as her authentic self, the passion she has for helping others, her continued personal grow journey and her interesting hobbies such as Numerology among many others.
3 KEY INSIGHTS
What I mean by this is that through the extreme sport of bodybuilding, periods of depletion and hard preps can really strip you back to your core self and expose what’s not working for you with laser like focus. In Mehtab’s case it was unresolved trauma and corporate life.
Most successful athletes implement habits such as meditation, journaling and visualisation. They also become skilled at extracting the learnings and orientating themselves to growth.
The 3 types of people most likely to experience burnout are:
a. The hyper achievers;
b. Those that experience scarcity; and
c. Those who experience boredom;
Mehtab goes on to explain that the hypnotherapy involves relaxing a person so that they are in a state where their nervous system is regulated and then accessing the subconscious to release mental and emotional blocks.
Brief summary of episode:
In this episode, we have the Powerhouse Coaches Annie Mallard (also Powerlifter) and Cyla Maguire (Former Boxer) talk about their personal athletic endeavors, what health & fitness means to them and how they help others achieve their fitness goals.Inspiration doesn't get any better than this 💪💖🥊
Key Insights:
You don’t have to have an athletic background or a history of being good at sport / physical activity to become an athlete later in life;
The first step is to “Give it a Go” – find something that interests you and see how you go. Once you get past this barrier the rest becomes easier;
Choosing a place to exercise that has a sense of: a. Family or community; b. Makes you feel welcome; and c. Like you belong; to d. Stay motivated and keep getting better;
Tag your goals to how you want to feel, what you want to achieve physically rather than how you look – the rest will fall into place;
The key to sustainable change, is to then find that connection to self, and making your goal bigger than you… for example, how are my actions impacting those around me… is it how I intend and will it give others the courage to make a positive change;
If you have any questions, or would like to get in touch with Annie and Carla, let me know. Also I would love to know your thoughts. 🥰

Taking the step and making one healthy change / focusing on one habit can create a knock-on effect. Charles Duhigg in his book the Power of Habit describes this as unlocking a "keystone Habit". Essentially by focusing on one habit, you teach yourself how to create other routines that serve you better as well.
You may not always find the right PT / Coach for you the first time you try with one, however you'll still likely learn things. You'll also be exposed to different ideas for training and also more about what (or who) works for you so keep exploring!
2 years of restrictions and mandates have created unique challenges for PTs and gym goers. So being flexible, supporting each other and being open to trying new things will be the key to navigating the new world successfully.

But actually, you know, what's your long term goal and where does this fit into everything else that you want to do with your life and so on might accomplish one thing.”
