Deuteronomy 18:15–18
Moses is the prototypical prophet of God, surpassed only by Jesus Christ himself—who is the very Word of God made flesh. Christ followers must beware of false prophets, always prepared to “test the spirits” (1 John 4:1) by the unblemished standard of Jesus Christ.

Our close friends should build us up, not tear us down. They should help us, not harm us—whether emotionally, spiritually, physically, or ethically. This six-week Lent series borrows its title from Ezekiel 36 and the picture given there of “the heart of stone” (v. 26). The series looks at ways our hearts are hardened or can be hardened and God’s invitation to transform our callous hearts into “hearts of flesh.” This sermon series is meant to edify our church body by entreating us to seek and find spiritual renewal in Christ.

The return of Jesus is the event his followers must always anticipate. His return is meant to elicit emotions of excitement and hope. It is the most certain of hopes, but we don’t know the day it will occur. Jesus’s return will come upon us unexpectedly; however, we must live as if he is already among us. The way we treat other people must be filtered through the idea “What if this is Jesus?”

The disciples needed to be reminded that Jesus’s return was imminent, and they were to remain ready. Still today, Jesus’s return must remain a constant possibility for his followers. We must live as if today is the day, even if we have been living that way for many years. Jesus’s return will come when He is ready, but we must make every effort to be ready when that time comes.

Jesus knew he was more than just another teacher. Many religious leaders were threatened by Jesus’s following, so they tried challenge his authority while others watched. This four-week series examines the downward spiral of God’s people in the book of Judges. The book centers around people having a relativism that caused them to do whatever they wanted to do. Jesus was not afraid of the powers that sought to eliminate him, but he was grieved by the spiritual state of Jerusalem, whose leaders would not accept God’s messengers. We so frequently complain against the world that we forget how often God warns against religious institutions. As believers, we must continually respond to the good news with repentance. Our need to repent never goes away.

God's Good News is a source of freedom to all who put their trust in Him. Human power and authority are unreliable, but God’s good news is a source of freedom to all who put their trust in him. The good news forces us to reconsider where we place our trust. Do we trust in God or in human leaders? The church should model trust in God alone.

In this Lenten series we focus on God’s good news and repent of the ways we have failed to live it out. Would our community recognize our church as good news? This series asks hard questions: Why did those outside the Church so often recognize Jesus as good news, but the religious viewed him as a threat? Have we abandoned the good news by putting our trust in political and religious leaders instead of in the God who alone can save? In reflecting on these questions, we will be encouraged to respond with repentance.
Jesus brings good news to those who are suffering. It is a beautiful message that demands a response. The good news offers freedom to those who are suffering. We should evaluate whether we are people in need of freedom, people who oppress others, or people who extend the gospel message to all around us.

Obadiah is a prophet of doom for those who work against the people of God. God may give them a season of victory, but their destruction will come when he is ready. We have to accept that God’s will sometimes includes suffering and difficulty, but his promises point to his eventual reign and creation’s restoration. Key Truth: God promises He will show up
The prophet Micah addresses the abuses and difficulties that the Hebrew people faced under various oppressors but reminds the people that God will vindicate Israel and create an eternal hope for all the world. God will be their warrior and their king. Even in the darkest times, God promises he will show up. While the world around us may appear to be falling apart, God assures us that in his time he will set all things right.

Key Truth: If we desire God to exercise punishment instead of forgiveness, our hearts are not in line with God’s plan.
Jonah resisted going to Nineveh because he knew God would relent if any sign of repentance existed. Jonah wasn’t interested in God’s mercy for others, only in his justice for wickedness. If we are honest, at times we’d rather God exercise punishment than forgiveness, and because of this, our hearts are not in line with God’s plan.

We are in a series called, Criticizing Jesus, where we are studying some of the criticisms Jesus faced during his ministry…what each criticism reveals about Jesus’s character, priorities, authority, and mission.
In the story we’re looking at today, the criticism Jesus receives is because people think he is “possessed by Beelzebul” and say that “by the prince of demons he casts out the demons” (Mark 3:22). However, as Jesus shows them, they are wrong in their conclusion about which side he is serving.
Jesus waged war against powers of darkness. If you don’t believe in spiritual warfare and the powers of darkness, then a lot of what Jesus did and taught will seem like nonsense. But knowing he is all-powerful over the forces of evil means you can turn to him in your time of need.

We began a new series this past week called, Criticizing Jesus, where we began looking at the criticisms Jesus faced during his ministry…what each criticism reveals about Jesus’s character, priorities, authority, and mission.
Last week, we examined our propensity to gravitate towards rules and regulations that tend to rob our Joy. Jesus came to set us free from religious legalism because Life with Jesus is a life with Joy!
Today, we examine our belief center and learn or are reminded that Jesus is God in the flesh.
Both of these truths require us to evaluate our why and see if we are more focused on the rules and regulations of faith or our relationship with our Savior.
Jesus is God in the flesh. Our goal is to discover and proclaim who Jesus said he was and is - whether the implications challenge us or comfort us.

Throughout history, human beings have told stories to teach morals, heritage, and rules. Stories like “The Three Little Pigs” and the “Tortoise and the Hare” have taught us about responsibility, persistence, pride, and consequences to foolishness. The New Testament presents a type of oral communication that Jesus used in his teachings: parables.
We need parables because we struggle to listen. We can be so busy living our lives that we even forget to listen to God. But parables use the power of story to illustrate God’s will and truth. Jesus’ parables were meant to “jolt people out of their complacency.”
Tonight we will discover that our lives are a parable. They are telling a story for all to hear. Matthew 13, the parable of the sower. The parable of us.

- Last week…To Look for where God is at work and join God there. God can take our “not enough” and make it “more than enough.”

Often when we read the story of Jesus feeding the multitudes by multiplying five loaves of bread and two fish, we focus on the fact that Jesus used a small boy’s generosity as the starting point of a miracle. This is true, of course. However, Andrew’s participation in the miracle is often overlooked. After a short conversation with Philip that only focused on the lack of resources, Jesus’s attention was turned toward Andrew when he pointed out the boy’s supply. Both Andrew and the boy were invited to participate in Jesus’s miracle of feeding thousands of people. What an honor to be included in this miracle!
Miracles of God, such as the feeding of the five thousand, provide opportunities to be part of what God is doing. We should remain watchful for opportunities to be used by God in a miraculous moment.

Last week we finished up our series we called, “What’s in it for me?” with the challenge to give the Lord our whole heart by reorienting our expectation for God to bend our way and instead, soften and make ourselves pliable for God to bend us God’s way by ways of:
- Allowing Scripture to read US
- Prayer – syncing up with the Lord’s desires
- Prioritizing our finances God’s Way
Today we continue discovering our true self through another series exploring the lives of people who had profound, life-changing encounters with Jesus. We will connect their stories to people we know in our own community of believers and other modern-day individuals who have had similar experiences.
Over the past three weeks we’ve been checking our “why.” Why do we do what we do? What is our motivation? In a cultural climate that has taught us for years to ask, “What’s in it for me?” We’ve been fighting this norm which ends in destruction…especially relationships…most importantly, our relationship with God.
To get our priorities in order, we have begun addressing our “why” in our relationship with the Lord. To spend time with the Lord simply because He is God. And instead of asking What’s in it for me? To delight in the Lord…to soften ourselves and become pliable through:
- Scripture Reading – allowing the word of God to read US.
- Prayer – Allowing the Lord to bend us towards his will and way.
- And today, we finish with Generosity – We give generously to the Lord and People because that’s what Jesus did. In other words, quite literally… Generosity is King!
Put another way…God is a giving Father who teaches us to give because we love our generous God, not for what we can get out of giving.

Have you ever been guilty of thinking you are the one in charge as you read Scripture? Have you ever read Scripture (or anything else for that matter), reached the end, and asked yourself, “What did I just read?” Sometimes we rush. We aren’t interested. We seek what we want to hear, so we skim. Or we push through Leviticus and try not to fall asleep.
Bible study can be misunderstood as a personal comfort and an intellectual pursuit, often subconsciously, seeking the answer to the question, “What’s in it for me?” But we must allow God's Word to read us and train us in God’s ways. We hope to work to slow down and read Scripture humbly, both by ourselves and within our community together.

What’s in it for me? We live in a consumer-oriented culture that has trained us to ask this. In life we want a return on the things we do. But in our relationship with God, this can lead to spiritual disciplines being treated as transactional. In this installment, we seek God, not to check off a task on a list but to experience knowing him. We can mature as believers and serve God because we love Him.
Jesus modeled the way. As God sent Jesus to this earth, He layed down his life for God so that we may live life, soft and pliable like Jesus. When we follow in Jesus’ way, we find Life. Until then, something is missing.
Will you choose to be pliable? Will you spend time to delight in the Lord? Allow God to mold you and make you into the man/woman he created you to be.

Failure does not define the Christian life. It is such a personal thing, that we tend to personalize our mistakes and believe in our hearts that we are a failure. This is not what God has in mind for any of us. We persevere despite failure as we depend on God to change us. We will not let failure define us but will persevere forward in our walk with Christ.

In order to grow, we must acknowledge our failures. We will not pretend we have it all together. After all, the world can see our brokenness. We will find safe people to be real with about our failures. We are, after all, better together.

Easter Sunday put on display the resurrection as God’s work of new creation and kingdom come here on Earth. And the resurrection changes everything. Jesus is risen, therefore his followers have a new job to do. And what is that new job? To bring the life of heaven in actual, physical, earthly reality. Jesus’ resurrection is the beginning of God’s new project, not to snatch people away from earth to heaven, but to colonize earth with the life of heaven.

Key Truth: Lament and repentance bring an anticipation for God’s work of grace and holiness to begin in our lives.

When we lament and repent of both personal and corporate sins, we can anticipate not only the sorrow but the experience of forgiveness and our dependence on God. We can anticipate Christ’s saving work and new life in him. In this installment, we will anticipate and experience God’s sanctifying work during Lent.
Key Truth: The church must lament its sins and ask for forgiveness from God and the world around us.
Sometimes we start out on the right path but lose our way. At times, the Church is guilty of this. In darkness we have choices and responsibilities. As a church, we are given the choice to repent. There is power in joining together and humbly admitting our sin. There is also great power in apologizing for the church’s sins to a world that looks to us.

What does it look like for the church to repent? The church must lament its sins and ask for forgiveness from God and the world around us.
Key Truth: Lamenting personal sin brings about repentance - Turning from the path we were on and turning toward God.
Have you ever found yourself going the wrong direction on a one-way street? You start looking for an exit or side road so you can turn around. People honk their horns at you, and you begin to get flustered. Once you are safely on the right path again you are relieved. When God shows us our sin, it can be disconcerting in a similar way. But if we ignore the “Wrong Way” signs and keep going the same way, we put ourselves and those around us in ever-increasing danger. Being shown our sin is a mercy, and repentance is an opportunity to turn around and go the right way again.
Lent is a season that involves lament, repentance, and anticipation. This past week we began the season of Lent with fasting, praying, and grieving our own personal sin. Asking God to examine our hearts…to bring to light any anxious thoughts…any ways that are offensive…and lead us in the way everlasting.
This week…as we fast…when our bodies remind us what we are sacrificing, we take time to pray…to ask God what sins of the church God longs for us to lament and repent. Sit in that moment…grieve…and ask God if there is a part God has for you in righting these wrongs.
What’s wrong with the world? Poverty, war, abortion, racism, human trafficking, opioid addiction - this list can become long. We can think of countless ways that this world is fallen, broken and in need of Christ. Lent is not just about personal lament over sin and brokenness, but we also lament the sin and brokenness in the world AND in the church itself.
Lent is a season that involves lament, repentance, and anticipation. So what does it mean to lament? We get the idea from a Hebrew word which means a song of mourning that emphasizes the feeling of sorrow.[1]
We lament at our own struggles. Lamenting reminds us of the broken, sinful world we live in. We lament at the brokenness in our lives. Believe it or not…we NEED to feel that grief…that is what it means to lament.
We should lament over our sin which is everything that separates us from God.
Key Truth: We should not fight the feelings of guilt because of sin.

Over the past three weeks, we have turned our attention from us individuals to the congregational body of Christ…the big “C” church to get our “Legacy” house in order for this year.
Commission – Evangelism Is Important. It is our commission to share our faith. Being an effective evangelist means living a life that honors the Lord. Remember…no one wants to hear about our God if God has had little effect on our lives.
Community – Live In Obedience To God And Pursue Unity With Others – Live a life worthy of the calling received which is illustrated by humility, love, patience, and gentleness in how we live in community with one another.
AND fight to keep the unity of the Spirit because we all share one “body,” one hope, one Savior, one faith.
Commandment - The Christ Follower’s Love Of God Ought To Overflow To Loving Others. Love God. Love People. They go together like no other. In fact, you can’t really do one without the other!

It’s easy to make ourselves feel better by pointing out one another’s flaws…focusing on our differences instead of our similarities. Unfortunately, this is especially true in the church. The people that make up the church can be hard to encourage in their flaws because churched people are “supposed to know better.”

To bring Joy to those far from God often times requires an attitude adjustment. How to bring Joy (HS) to those that are far from God? Joy is not something we can produce. But we are able to carry it everywhere we go…especially with those that are hard to love. They key is for God to exchange our natural responses for supernatural ones.
