Hi! I am Jill Hicks, and I am passionate about helping parents and athletes through the college recruiting process. Understanding the NCAA, knowing when to start and how to market yourself to college coaches are all topics we will explore. You will no longer feel overwhelmed as the parent and I will build confidence in your athlete to have a smoother journey to the right college team. I am grateful to have been a scholarship athlete and 20 year college coach as it has prepared me to help YOU! Lets ignite your recruiting process.
June 15th was a crazy day for some recruits. Lots of stress leading up to that moment, but I want to encourage anyone who did not receive communication from a college coach not to worry. Recruiting will happen throughout your senior year.
Jill shares some of the back side of recruiting in regards to what the college coaches go through in determining who they need to recruit.
www.jhicksconsulting.com
Jill interviews one of the most decorated gymnasts at Oregon State, Chari Knight! Until this year she held the most 10's scored at OSU. As I was sitting with Chari during her recent chemo treatments, I realized how special our relationship is and will always be and how fortunate I was to coach her in college . Chari shares why she picked OSU and how she felt valued as a person.
If you haven't seen Chari's beam or floor routines in college, check out this link below. Her lines on beam were some of the best ever.

I can understand why many people are confused as to when to start the recruiting process. They often compare the start time to the end of high school senior year because that is when they themselves started or they do not understand the NCAA rules and the sport of gymnastics. This topic will help you understand the reason behind why JHC likes to start with research and education first at Level 9.
If you would like to become a JH Girl and you are a Level 9 you can go to www.jhicksconsulting.com click on Get Started and fill out our forms page. An advisor will give you a call.

On this podcast I enjoyed speaking with Ariana LeBlanc who was an Elite gymnast and owns The Mindful Gymnast. Ariana shares tips on how to overcome your fears in the sport of gymnastics and ways to uncover and identify why you may struggle with your confidence when you compete.
www.themindfulgymnast.com
Many gymnasts do not realize how important it is to take some time off in the peak of their season. They are so used to pushing everyday going to school and the gym.
Rest, restoration and relaxation are crucial aspects of an athlete's overall recovery and positive outcome to their performance. This time of season you may find you have a few weekends off. This is a great opportunity to allow yourself to recover and it can have very positive result to the rest of your season.
Of course everyone wants to hit or compete well at meets. It shows the college coach many things that are important when they are trying to decide on their future teams. But what if you struggle? Jill shares how you can turn your season into something positive by communicating all that you are learning whether things go smooth or rocky.
It is so refreshing and like a breath of fresh air when we stop looking around at others and comparing ourselves to them.
We are all at a different pace, ability and timing in regards to our progress and being recruited
Staying focused on what we can control is the key! But I also believe being grateful for the little things in our lives will release us from a lot of anxiety.
It is so important to go to practice and meets focused on you and not looking around at others. Be encouraged as you listen to these 10 items as to why you do not want to live by comparing yourself to others and especially in the recruiting process

Thank you for listening and or being a part of JH Consulting. You are appreciated!
Research is a key factor in setting you up for success in the college recruiting process. College coaches are very impressed with a recruit who has taken the time to learn on their own about the academics and athletics. There are so many ways to make this fun and get you ready to step up to the plate when you start to have direct communication with college coaches

I always say recruiting is like a roller coaster ride. Lots of ups and downs throughout the journey. Audrey was on her way to a Division 1 team and encountered a few injuries. Ultimately, she decided it was best to not pursue college gymnastics. While not easy I so appreciate Audrey being willing to let us into her story. She is strong, smart and took the time to make the best decision for her future. I can't wait to see where she lands for college and all the doors that I believe will open in her life even without doing sports.
Thank you Audrey!

Every family has different priorities and perspective on the college recruiting process. I have really enjoyed working with this JH Girl because she has persevered through so much. Gym and coaching changes as well as not becoming a Level 10 until her senior year.

Traci was an elite gymnasts who also competed for University of Utah. She graduated with a masters in Exercise Science with an emphasis on psychology. She now works with many gymnasts with fear issues and also helps athletes with performance enhancement.

I think most Level 9's who are Sophomores often feel like they may be left behind in the recruiting process. This episode will give you a purpose and a plan. You do not need to stress or worry. Jill shares a plan that will help you realize what you can be doing and how "waiting" to send out emails is often a great idea. College coaches look for strong basics at Level 9 and they know you will add in your "D" skills throughout your Junior year.
You've got this. Enjoy your season and set your goals both academically and athletically. This year should be when you set your foundation for recruiting. The outreach phase will come, it may just look a little different than. other gymnasts who have been Level 10 for a while.
www.jhicksconsulting.com
For some recruits it feels very dark. They are not getting responses from college coaches except "keep sending updates". We need to turn the light on to your recruiting. At JH Consulting this is our goal. We like to do a deep dive into your past and evaluate all things you have been doing and why you might be in the dark and have no movement forward. Sometimes it is the skill level or choice of skills on an event that is holding things back. Other times it can be the list of schools your are reaching out to. I have also seen many shy recruits just not saying the right things to a college coach to get their attention. There are so many ways to turn the light on to your recruiting. First and foremost you need to be open. Open to hearing the truth about your situation. This can be tough for some. But when the athlete and parent are open, I often see change happen quickly. Enjoy this encouraging and hopeful podcast and let us know if you need help in the college recruiting process.

Official and Unofficial visits are crucial in the college athletic recruiting process. You want to be prepared and do your research. Bring the energy and show the college coach you are serious about their team and school. Be sure to put your phone away and be focused on every person. The college team will often vote after you leave. Did you connect with the girls? Did you ask them questions and show that you wanted to get to know them? Yes, it is a time for you to show them who you are in person, but it is also a time for the team to decide if you will fit in. During this podcast Jill shares ten items for you to think about prior to your official or unofficial visit.

Robyn shares with you from the parent perspective the adjustments and challenges of being the support system for your athlete when they are at college. Also, Robyn shares what it was like being the parent when Jordyn unfortunately called saying she injured her knee and was going to need surgery.
This is a very practical podcast on the realities of being the parent of a student athlete and I believe you will also be encouraged to know you are not alone with your questions and concerns. I also like the tips Robyn gives at the end on things to focus on while your gymnast is still at home with you in preparing them for when they go off to college.

Wouldn't it be great if the college coach would call you on June 15th after your Sophomore year and say "we want you and here is your scholarship offer". It just does not happen like that very often. For the bulk of athletes, recruiting is a grueling period of time of many ups and downs. Jill shares today how you can know if a college coach is serious about you. Take a listen and be prepared to jot down some questions you can ask that will help give you an idea of their seriousness.

It is a fun week for many gymnast who have finished their Sophomore year. It can be a time for the gymnast to find out which college coaches are interested in them. Will it be a text, phone call, email or visit to watch you practice. Whichever it is, you need to be prepared. Lots of tips on this podcast, but remember many JH Girls from the past were recruited without being contacted on this day. Also, every college coach has their own style of reaching out. What works for one coach may be very different from another. Stay focused no matter if you get contacted or not on working hard on your upgrades and continue reaching out. It may take a little more time to get noticed.

Have you ever watched gymnasts in your gym or at meets who look down and seem uninterested in what they are doing? Now compare that to a gymnast like Laurie Hernandez. Wow what a performer she was and is. This is what college coaches see when they watch you. Do you show your heart and passion when you perform. Are you creating energy and making people want to watch you? Jill gives a twist on how to go into Nationals with being prepared to show the college coach the size of your heart. It will not only impact your performance, but it tells a college coach you will be able to handle competing in front of a crowd.
Have fun if you are traveling to Nationals, but if not no problem. Try to think of ways you can perform while working your upgrades. You've Got This
www.jhicksconsulting.com
It is so important for you the athlete, to get recruiting done prior to starting the meet. Email the college coaches on your list by Sunday and let them know the day and time you compete. Also, post a headshot on Instagram or put a headshot in your email. You want them to be able to find you quickly when you are competing. So the #1 item is to stop thinking about recruiting after you send off the last email to college coaches. Take next week for you! Go into Nationals with a plan and execute the plan. Make no excuses and remember the importance of one event at a time.
YOU'VE GOT THIS!
Stop by our table in Oklahoma at the venue and say hello! We would love to meet you in person.
There is nothing worse than training lots of numbers but struggling to compete consistently. This podcasts helps to remind the athlete how important it is to compete by training your mind to be positive. We know the college coaches look for a lot of things, but consistency is high on their list. Being a one hit wonder does not work in our sport. Six up five count is the name of the game in the college meet. The college coach has to know you can hit when it counts.

Do gymnastics or your sport for yourself
Set goals
Start with research, education and not sending emails to the college coaches
When you love the sport the college coach will feel this energy from you and it will impact your recruiting. It is time to change the narrative in your head. When you are young you can flip, jump and fly without the pressure, but when you reach the high school years it all changes. Your body changes and things become harder. Injuries happen and it is harder to please the club coach. This is when you must ask yourself "why" are you going to gym each day. Is it for college, parents or club coach? If you lose your joy and purpose, it can begin to hold you back.
Writing down your goals is proven to bring about achieving them, in fact 20-30% more likely. JH Girls I want you to journal tonight your long term goal for 2023 season, but you must break it down into monthly, weekly and daily goals.
Start your recruiting with research and education. Lay the foundation of which schools are right for you first then go online and learn about the schools. Picking the right camps and getting to know the college coaches is way more powerful than sending an email first.

This can be a confusing topic, but very important in the recruiting process. Timing is the key. We want every JH Girl to have a shot at an athletic scholarship whether Division 1 or 2. But there are so many opportunities to be had as a walk on. I think you will enjoy this podcast, as most parents and athletes do not understand the timeline of when to ask about a "walk on " position. Do not be afraid to ask the college coach questions about this possibility. We love to build into our JH Girls the confidence to ask the tough questions. You are not bothering the college coaches. They prefer complete transparency.

Most universities have incredible support systems for their athletes. Also, what kind of discussions can you have while they are still at home and what questions should you be asking? All of this and more is part of this special podcast.

I have invited two guests on the show, Vicki one of my JH advisors and Laura who has a rising Level 10. Laura and her daughter have not had any college zooms or visits yet. Mindset, is the key word in this podcast. College coaches understand that you may have to take time off, have a gym shut down or have no competitions. But, how are you managing yourself through this time? What are you doing that shows them that you are working just as hard under new circumstances? Have you pushed the reset button and created a new mindset? Are you getting stronger, staying fit and conditioning for your comeback? Show them everyday on your Instagram! Prove to them that you have a plan and are focused on what you can be doing. COVID, injuries and no competitions are opportunities for the college coach to see "who you really are under pressure".

Jensie's parents hired me when she entered 9th grade. She had only competed Level 7. Multiple surgeries later and only being able to train on bars and beam as a senior she was recruited as a walk on to some of the top teams in the country. Jensie also shares what it was like being a Level 10 walk on at Alabama and how tough it was mentally to make the bar line up. Such an encouraging podcast with another JH Girl who is transparent and willing to share her story.

If you have the dream of competing for Stanford University or want to go into the medical field, this podcast is for you! What I also enjoyed was our conversation as to why it is so hard for athletes to share their injuries with their coaches. Tenaya West, competed for Stanford University on floor and beam and shares what it was like to be on a team that won the Pac 10 Championships and the NCAA Super Six. So much insight into how the sport of gymnastics prepared her not only to do well at Stanford as a student but also becoming a surgeon.
Dr. Tenaya West is a podiatrist in Mountain View, California. She specializes in the foot and ankle with an emphasis on pediatrics, sports medicine and trauma.

In the sport of gymnastics we just finished a dead period and will be moving into another one in December. We will also discuss goals for the month of December.
Some professional athletes have said sports is 90% mental and 10% physical. If this is true, then JH Girls we need to be sure you are ready for your season by not just putting in time on the skills needed physically, but also be aware your mental game preparation. Doc Ali has worked with thousands of gymnasts through the years. She has such a fun way of providing tools for the athlete to build their confidence and consistency. She starts with helping the athlete to have the right mindset. We also discuss the importance of being an energy giver and not an energy sucker in regards to what the college coach looks for in a recruit. I know you will be encouraged and challenged as you listen to this episode with Doc Ali.

Brendi is the mom of JH Girl- Lilly Tubbs who is headed to WA on a full athletic scholarship. Brendi shares their journey through the college recruiting process. We started with one list of schools when Lilly was in 8th grade and by the time she was a junior in high school, multiple year Level 10 her list was completely different. The college she thought would be a done deal ended with a "no thank you " from the coach. I gave Lilly 24 hours to grieve that situation and we then got after it and came up with a whole new plan. I recommended that Lilly go to Washington's fall clinic and the rest is history.

Not being able to do a skill or an event can be so frustrating, especially when you are in the thick of recruiting. Vicki and I discuss this challenging and sometimes hidden topic. Do you tell the college coach and when is a good time to do this? What if the college coach asks you why you are not showing videos of a specific event? We shed light on this topic and give you some hope. You can still be recruited depending on our situation and how you handle it. Both Vicki and I experienced having college gymnasts on our teams who struggled with this issue. Join us as we bring you tips and takeaways from our past.

It is important to take your time before you verbally commit to a college team. While it is an exciting time to be asked to verbally commit, you must do your due diligence so that your word to the college coach will stand through time. 1. Be sure it is the right fit academically 2. Keep videoing and communicating even after the verbal commitment 3. Do you own vetting of the school, team and coaches
