Ambient/Post-Rock/Rock/Noise | 87:11
Traces of [King] Crimson & a "shout out" to the heir apparent of the Fripp guitar sound: Markus Reuter (Fripp, Reuter & King Crimson each make 3 appearances, herein). This also serves as a nod to the Reuter, Motzer & Grohowski album 'Bleed' (see upcoming podcast nine for an additional track), with some of my favorite guitarists; Dirk Serries, Andy Summers, & David Torn, blended into the mix.
Pairs well with 2023's The Mars Transmission & 2015's Fripp_2015.

Something different in an ambient, slow-to-fast/semi-turbulent vein . . . an ambient breeze that gradually morphs into a slightly quicker/robust pace.

A tribute to, & distillation of, the 2024 various artists ‘Somber‘ release (March 29th) on Sounds for the Soul records. Constructed between 4.11 & 4.13.2024, the week of the solar eclipse.
All tracks taken from “Somber” except track one, which was taken from “Forgotten Stories” by Daou.
This is a bit dark & edgy — I tried to imagine what it would be like on the edge of the sun’s surface during the eclipse, interspersing moments of darkness & light.

the scattering | experimental/ambient/minimal/glitch | 80:40
Scattering is a term used in physics to describe a wide range of physical processes where moving particles or radiation of some form, such as light or sound, are forced to deviate from a straight trajectory by localized non-uniformities (including particles and radiation) in the medium through which they pass.
In mixing the physical process is subjective, the moving particles are audible, the trajectory is semi-linear (slowest to fastest) and the deliverable . . . exquisite.

An ‘elements‘ (ether-jazz) edition that breaks all the rules*. Revolving around Dylan Howe‘s interpretation of David Bowie‘s ‘Low‘ & ‘Heroes‘ ambient tracks, Subterranean: New Designs on Bowie’s Berlin, the challenge was to make a stand-alone Jazz mix, while reflecting Howe’s interpretation & bringing it out within the scope of the other selected tracks.

After the Mars modified Lunar-Rover returned from collecting enough raw audio samples, our team reassembled them to come up with this aural eruption. . .
A slightly darker, more aggressive & brooding Fripp/Crimson-driven red planet monstrosity; made to be played at maximum volume!
(I’ve been playing in via my car’s audio system this week in anticipation of the release).
The final track is a custom edited extension of an extremely short ProjeKct Four (Robert Fripp w/ Trey Gunn, Tony Levin & Pat Mastelotto) piece unearthed by DGM Live as they sorted through various audio files (stuffed into old shoe boxes, no doubt): it clocked in @ just over 2 minutes (boo!) . . . now it’s a searing 5′ 50″ rocker!

Arid Desert Flower | Avant-Garde/Ether-Jazz/Jazz/Noise | 79:19
Eclectic combinations of scratchy noise disguised as music (sometimes bordering on melody); extraneous machinations and utterances never before heard via strings & woodwinds!
Predominantly sourced from A New Wave of Jazz's recent (June ~ August) catalog releases; this also introduces works by Ensemble Ektòs, rand & Matthew Whiteside -- which fit in perfectly with the avant-garde sound for which I was striving.
(the title & art were driven by one of the albums represented herein: The Sage Flower, by Guilherme Rodrigues & Dirk Serries).
elements 7 (a + b) | 82:04 / 77:48
A 2 parter (remixed from the 2005 original & inspired by a recent interview by Rick Beato with Pat Metheny), that grew out of my use of Mr. Metheny within this current ‘elements’ series; though he often gets a skewed rap as a “Smooth Jazz” artist, I’d bet that (like track 13 from the Frankenstein Mix concept) more people are into his stuff than care to admit it…and…the man can play!
As I started digging through the stacks, I unearthed fifteen albums by either Metheny, his Group or side projects (some of which I haven’t played in several years). I attempted to keep the ratio of Jazz to South American-influenced beats fairly even…and started cutting so many songs that it eventually grew into a double set. Unfortunately I couldn’t use anything off ‘The Falcon & the Snowman’ soundtrack or ‘Zero Tolerance for Silence’, as they just didn’t fit the “feel” of this double-shot.
My favorite of all the albums represented herein has to be ‘Question & Answer’, recorded with Dave Holland on bass and Roy Haynes on drums; I can set that one on ‘repeat’ @ the office and go just about all day long.
Mixed, including spaces between many of the compositions, so as to enhance f-l-o-w (vs. chronology) with a new track added to the project from the 2005 original mix.

Cracks, fissures & glitches within a dense aural landscape, revealing geo-formative
causticity, molecular droning & micro-sonic aberration . . .

This mix originally appeared under the title 'Arctika' in 2008 on Art of the Mix.
The song sequence was strategically reordered & tweaked with five different tracks
swapped out; and mixed via Audacity rather than the very limited Roxio;
(rendering digital comparisons, audits & overall assessments null & void).

untethered ambience, floating amid aurally slipstreamed sonance & shapes . . .
This project began & was driven by the cover artwork (along with tracks predominantly from 12k & 901 editions) – a totally random picture taken inside my shorts pocket while on a bike ride with my wife. We were touring the flash-flood ravaged areas in the neighboring towns, last Labor Day (2021) – taking some “after” photos of land that had, just days earlier, been under to 8 to 30 feet of water! When I was reviewing the photos, I noticed this one & thought:
“Hmm . . . podcast/mix album cover!”

'elements' is our #EtherJazz series; drawn heavily from the ECM Record label, the goal is a "close to ambient with excursions into real Jazz" sound.
