Entrepreneurship Lives Here: Recent Episodes

Kevin Boon

Technology provides many wonders, access to information, connection, and the opportunity to create wealth unlike any other time in human history. Yet the power of the technology is fraught with challenges. Combined with entrepreneurial knowhow, legal and economic practices, we live in a time of great hoarding, the hoarding of wealth, resources, real estate, even our time and attention. Entrepreneurship has lost what it should be, ways to build wealth and prosperity for individuals, families, and communities. Instead, we have created entrepreneurial systems designed to commoditize and scale; to extract wealth for the fastest and highest return possible. Eventually being sold to one of the big giant mega corporations. Hoarding wealth, and the acquisition of resources, and assets are considered acts of brilliance, when the people who commit to such practices do much harm to the overall collective livelihood of people and the planet. Today, the extraction and hoarding mentality are systematized and mainstream, in virtually every market from real estate to technology platforms, to everyday commercial goods. Trends show that innovation is the race to the bottom, to hoard and take as much of the marbles for yourself, creating mega-giant companies and an ultra-wealthy class. All the while, the data shows, the middle classes are shrinking and the quality of life for many is declining. Our innovations are leading us in the direction to create huge rental models for the future, where in a few short years, we will have a subscription for everything; where a few will own most resources, technology platforms, many will struggle to stay afloat. Innovation in the way it is currently done is not healthy. This podcast explores the human condition of the 21st century, technology, and our current business practices, having conversations with entrepreneurs, business leaders, innovators, thought leaders, policy makers, mental health leaders. The question becomes, how do we change the direction we are headed? Can we build a society that promotes the well-being for all?

Welcome to episode number three. My guest is Courtney Pool.

Courtney is a nutritionist and coach who specializes in healing overeating, juice cleansing, and plant-based nutrition. She helps her clients explore the root causes of overeating and teaches strategies to achieve permanent healing and behavior change. She guides clients through juice cleanses between 5 days and 3 months in length, coaching on what to expect and how to do a cleanse properly.

As a 15-year vegan and nutritionist, she helps clients individualize their diet to meet their goals.

My original connection with Courtney, came after watching one of her YouTube videos, and then reaching out to do a 10-day juice cleanse. There is value around resetting our biological systems once and a while, detoxing or fasting that I have found to be a good practice. And working with Courtney has allowed me to look at my own relationship with food and ask bigger questions.

In our conversation, we discuss juice cleansing, plant-based nutrition, and the emotional connection many of us have to food, and how we can use compulsive eating to avoid deeper feelings or stresses in our lives. Courtney shares her own journey, moving away from fast foods and compulsive overeating toward becoming a Vegan. She goes into depth on some of the bigger challenges faced by society including human rights, animal rights, and the environment, that are caused by our heavy reliance on animal products.

Statistics show upward trend towards people looking for more healthy food options with more looking toward plant-based diets completely. While there are different approaches and opinions, the plant-based diet has become more accessible for the average person. This was an extremely informative discussion for me, being someone who is not a vegan, but who can see the greater challenges we face from the obesity epidemic to our heavy reliance animal products, processed foods, and the growing impact on climate and other factors.

I hope you enjoy this conversation.

Here is episode two from my podcast, “Entrepreneurship Lives Here”, a series of interviews that explores some of the bigger challenges within our society. Topics around technology, wealth creation, economy, health, education, politics, media, climate change, mental health, and our human potential.

In episode #02, I interview Victoria Volk who is a Grief Recovery Specialist. Victoria is an expert on the topic of grief. She is a writer, an author, an advanced Grief Recovery Specialist, a YouMap certified coach, a podcaster, and she is a trained end-of-life doula.

Victoria uses a proven method, called the Grief Recovery Method® that provides a process for anyone to complete with unresolved grief.

Grief is one of the most under discussed topics in our society, especially in the business world, and yet everyone, at some stage in life experiences grief. For entrepreneurs, business leaders, and people alike, unresolved grief can lead to burnout, poor decision-making, and can impact our capacity to be productive, earn a living, or simply to be happy.

Victoria unpacks grief in a way that brings not only understanding, but solutions, and personal empowerment.

She takes away the shame by saying, "there's nothing wrong with you". “It’s natural”.

Many of us know there is a mental health crisis, that impacts society on many levels. People are suffering from anxiety, depression, and whole host of disorders. By having the open discussion around grief, we broaden our understanding and learn there are solutions, whether it is us suffering, or someone we care about.

Welcome to episode #001.

My guest is Piers Cross.

Piers is a men’s transformational coach, based in the UK. He works primarily with those dealing with relationship issues, anxiety, depression, childhood trauma, and helps them to create more joy and happiness in their lives.

His specialty is helping men work through what is called “Boarding School Syndrome”.

This is a term I had never heard before I met Piers, because I had never been to Boarding School myself. But in our conversation, I learned there can be a psychological impact on children who are separated from their primary caregivers at a young age. Even though boarding school is an institutionalized system that has been around for centuries in the UK and other parts of the world, there is growing evidence that a percentage of those who have attended, have experienced some form of trauma.

In our discussion, Piers relates his story of growing up in England and attending boarding school between the ages of 11 and 18. Although he went on to a successful corporate career, he eventually burned out, and had an emotional breakdown, realizing that much of his suffering had come from the trauma he had experienced while at boarding school. He describes how it took much reflection, inner emotional work, and three years living in a Buddhist monastery, to discover tools and learn skills to help him work through his trauma.

His experiences led him to a career in men’s coaching, helping others who have had similar experiences. We discuss some of the methods he uses with his coaching clients, in his workshops, and he gives insights on how to show up more whole and grounded within our lives and relationships.

This is a good interview for men and women alike, because it helps to understand how trauma is created, and what a path to recovery might look like. I have also worked with Piers personally and can attest to his story and the tools that he uses to assist people. You can learn more about Piers and the work he does by visiting his website and YouTube channel.

Welcome to the Entrepreneurship Lives Here podcast.

My name is Kevin Boon, and I am your host.

My purpose with this podcast is to explore how our society creates wealth.

How do we create prosperity and economic abundance, individually within our lives, and collectively within our communities and nations? And beyond the financial, how do we create better systems that support health, happiness, mental and emotional well-being, aspects that go well beyond money, economics, and survival?

I use entrepreneurship as my model, because I believe there are qualities associated with entrepreneurial thinking, creativity, that can help us to find innovative ways to create wealth that can be applied not only individually but also on a collective, societal level.

In the last century, entrepreneurs have solved many big problems, but the biggest problem today, how do we address growing wealth inequality, and a world that often treats human well-being as unimportant.

We live in a time of political upheaval, distrust, polarization, economic uncertainty, yet we see astounding technological changes. We are seeing on one side, unimagined abundance, driven by technology, wealthy corporations and individuals with incredible power and influence. Yet on the other side, people struggle, there is a growing feeling of powerlessness as they struggle on all levels, mentally, emotionally, and financially.

The challenges within society today, are complex. With all the abundance and knowledge that exists within our world, is it possible for a society to transition from one based on economic survival and trauma-based thinking, into thriving economies that give the masses more wealth, autonomy, freedom, and ability to pursue meaningful lives?

With this podcast, my question is, can we build a better world, a more wealthy, prosperous society, one focused on human well-being, helping people to move toward their highest potential? I invite you to join me, listen to any of the episodes that pique your interest, and subscribe to my channel.

Thank you for listening.

This is the trailer for The Standing in Both World's Podcast series.

My name is Kevin Boon and I am your host.

In this series, I explore two worlds:
Our inner world or the world of our minds, emotions, belief systems, our psychology, spirituality, mental health, human well-being, and human potential.

The second is the outer world, the world of technology, wealth creation and how we build economies, politics, our education systems, entrepreneurship, the workplace, climate change, relationships, and family-life.

Society faces a crisis today, because for a long time, we have neglected the human element (our inner world) with our incessant pursuit of expansion in the outer world. We see this manifested in human suffering, especially around mental health, growing wealth inequality and our lack of ability as a society to collaborate, work together and take action on major issues.

My conversations focus how we align both worlds, first, by understanding the needs of the inner world and the importance of human wellbeing. By nurturing wellbeing, there is an opportunity where collectively we can create greater fulfillment, love, happiness, connection, abundance, creativity, and grow in compassion and empathy.

These are critical times, and technology is one of catalysts that provides a unique opportunity to create change on a global level. I look forward to launching episodes within this series and to be one of many voices focused on bringing about change for good.
