In Episode 13, founder of Xena Workwear Ana Kraft joins STEM Unfiltered to talk about how her entrepreneurial journey has been like as a STEM professional. Before starting Xena, Ana studied international project engineering and worked in the Midwest as an project engineer.
While working as an engineer, she noticed a gap in the women workwear market, specifically within protective gear such as steel toed boots. To solve this, Ana created steel toed boots designed by women for women. Reinvented Magazine's mission is to reinvent the general perception of women in STEM fields while inspiring interest in STEM for young women worldwide. Reinvented Magazine aspires to break barriers and aid the movement to get more girls involved in STEM by creating the nation's first print magazine for women in STEM. In addition to creating the first print magazine for women in STEM, RM also creates a 'Princesses in Power Tools' calendar annually, featuring women in STEM. The mission of the Princess in Power Tools calendar is to provide examples to young girls that you can grow up to be a princess AND an engineer, rather than one or the other.

Lois speaks to the accomplishes in her career and the recent launch of her new book, Moral Code. Moral Code is a sci-fi featuring a woman as the main character. This book questions the boundaries of defining morality intersecting the complexity of artificial intelligence in a futuristic setting. In addition to exploring the topics Moral Code covers, this episode is also packed with insight into the process of writing a book and the importance of featuring woman in STEM in media.

The IET’s Young Woman Engineer of the Year Awards have been celebrating women working in modern engineering for more than 40 years and aim to help change the perception that engineering is predominantly a career for men, by banishing outdated engineering stereotypes of hard hats and greasy pipes.
There are thousands of women engineers doing amazing things – from advancements in healthcare technology to space exploration, and the IET’s YWE awards are all about showcasing the best women engineering talent in this country, hopefully encouraging the next generation to get excited about the possibilities of an engineering career.
The IET wants to make it clear that engineering is a fantastic career for women. Outdated views and stereotypes are damaging to the industry, especially when there is a significant shortage of engineers, which poses a serious threat to the economy. It’s vital we champion engineering – it’s a diverse, creative and exciting career, which offers the opportunity to do something life – or even – world changing. It’s also really important to see the benefits that come from a diverse workforce including a wider talent pool, improved creativity and providing more role models to inspire the next generation.

This week, Lexi and Libby interviewed Kat to learn more about her experience with electrical engineering, graduate school at Johns Hopkins University, working at NASA, and working in the media space.
