Welcome to our study of James. This week we are going over James 5:13-5:20

Study Notes:

  • You can read more about Elijah in 1 Kings 17-19 and 2 Kings 1-2. There are many amazing stories about what he did and what God did through him. It’s easy to forget he was an ordinary guy like us and prayed these amazing prayers.

  • The ending is good at wrapping everything up and ties into Galatians 6.

  • This section is a calming presence changing the focus from what we need to do to change, to focusing on community to help us through the change and if there is someone that wanders. We are prone to wander.

  • In verse 13, he wraps up what he started in Chapter 3 with taming the tongue. He shows what to use our tongue for.

  • Verse 14 has been used incorrectly by many people. It does not mean that we are sick because of a sin issue, nor does it mean that we shouldn’t use medical intervention to heal us. He reiterates a previous point with the phrase “in the name of the Lord” meaning we need to do all things through God. The oil mentioned is very symbolic and means God is present and even though we don’t know the answer, God does and is here with you.

  • Verse 15 talks about the prayer of faith being said by the elders, not the one who needs help. If you need help, do not hesitate to ask the elders for help. We don’t need to be put together by ourselves.

  • There is a strong sense of spiritual healing in Verse 16. Once we vocalize our struggles, it is a weight lifted off our shoulders. Putting things out in the light helps build community with each other as we join in each other’s walk.

  • If you are in a big church, we challenge you to make a small community within the church.

Welcome to our study of James. This week we are going over James 4:13-5:12

Study Notes:

-In 4:17: James is talking about sinning by omission. Do we operate in a gray area where we aren’t actively sinning but also not listening to God’s direction?

-It’s easy to trust in God on things we agree with but are we withholding some of our lives from his direction?

-If God’s calling isn’t in the direction you want, will you listen?

-James is all about taking an inward look. Is there anything we are withholding from God? Planning isn’t bad, but do we intentionally involve God in the planning?

-5:1-6: Some commentaries argue this is a warning to people in the church but others say this is a warning to the people who are persecuting the church and that the rich mentioned earlier are attending church but maybe not members.

-James reminds us that if we serve the world, our treasures will end with the world.

-Once those that serve the world realize the error in their world, they will weep and howl.

-5:7-11: The farmer is a great analogy for faith. Our faith needs to be like that of a farmer. We need to trust the process without being able to see the fruits of the labor at all times.

-5:12: This is a fun verse because it seems out of place. We have to remember that the section headings and verses were added after the letters were written. 4:13-17 fits really well with 5:1-11 and that crosses chapters. Sometimes we forget the headings, chapters, and verses were added for the benefit of us the readers.

Welcome to our study of James. This week we are going over James 4:1-12

Study Notes:

-James quotes scripture but there is no scripture in canon that he quotes so there are three possibilities believed to be the most likely:

-He is just paraphrasing the second commandment.

-He is quoting intertestamental writings (Things written during the 400 years of silence).

-He is quoting another apostle.

-James continues to build on his previous points. Some references include asking God for the right things mentioned in Chapter 1, where our wisdom come from in Chapter 3, what our motive for our works comes from in Chapter 2 and finishes it up with warnings about our tongue from Chapter 3.

-James is again furthering his overall point of refocusing our life to mirror his and follow the prayer Jim prayed on Sunday of “Lord, make my desires your own.”

-In verses 9 and 10, he warns about people who don’t take sin seriously. We need to make sure we are having the correct response to our own sin. Are we glorifying our sin or are we morn because of it.

-James isn’t about sugarcoating it. James is about authentic faith to build a real relationship with God.

Welcome to our study of James. This week we are going over James 3:13-18

Study Notes:

-This is a natural ending to the first section of James.

-Meekness is usually associated as a bad attribute and a weakness. However, when James uses it, it means power under control. Meekness doesn’t come from passivity or cowardice but rather from trusting solely in God.

-Meekness contrasts with Selfish Ambition. Which was used to talk about politicians of the time.

-James links this passage to many of the previous points he has made. The overarching point made is that our outward appearance will display our inward self.

-In the first 3 chapters, James really focuses on our main pain points (suffering, our words, how we view people, how we look at life) and he ties them all together and shows how they are connected to your heart.

Join Jim, Davis, and Adam as they all join forces in a special Asking For A Friend.

Question: What is your best advice for newlyweds?

The guys all agree this would’ve been good advice to hear before they were married. Many times couples go into marriage with not just high expectations but incorrect expectations. They broke it down into four “Don’t Instead Do” phrases.

DON’T bottle up emotions and frustrations – Instead, DO communicate and pursue openness

-Learn how you communicate and understand how your spouse communicates. Two ways are love languages and apology languages.

-Be open with each other. You are meant to be one, don’t hide your emotions.

-An easy way to communicate and open up is using “I feel____ when ____” statements. Start doing this now! And work through each one before moving to the next.

DON’T expect sex to be amazing right away – Instead, DO pursue intimacy and learn about your partner

-A great Christian book on this topic is “Intended for Pleasure” by Ed Wheat and Gaye Wheat.

-Physical, mental, and spiritual are all connected. Engagement on all three leads to a greater connection.

-Intimacy isn’t only a physical event. If you are lacking in your mental and spiritual will cause the physical to lack as well.

-Communication is key in this as well.

DON’T go through marriage without a plan – Instead, DO create a mission statement for your family and live out those values

-The focus of the marriage needs to keep on honoring God. Everything else takes a back seat.

-Unity and agreement on things in your marriage is important. These include money, kids, and how to deal with parents.

-Having a unified front and goal will help prevent confusion and friction in future discussions.

DON’T view your partner as a roommate – Instead, DO continue to date and pursue after them

-Remember to intentionally take time out for each other. This does not need to cost anything.

-Date nights at home are an easy thing for after kids. Don’t fall into the trap of becoming roommates.

-Even monotonous weekly activities like getting groceries can turn into an impromptu date time.

-There are a lot of great and cheap date ideas or even conversation starters you can find online.

This week’s episode goes over James 3:1-12.

Show Notes:

-“The tongue is a small member, yet it boast of great things.” The tongue is strange because it does all the boasting for the body but rarely does what it is boasting about.

-Scriptures continually paint the picture that you are either glorifying God with your actions and word, or you are glorifying yourself.

-Even though James starts this section specifically mentioning teachers, the passage applies to everyone. Even though we may not be teachers by trade, we are teaching people. Either in the workplace or with our children. We need to be cautious with our words and actions even if we aren’t in a teaching role in the church.

-James knows that we cannot achieve perfection in this lifetime. However, we should still strive for perfection and continue to better ourselves.

-We need to be careful of our tongue. We can’t curse other people with the same tool we use to praise and worship our God.

This week’s episode goes over James 2:14-26.

Show Notes:

  • James starts off his point that belief doesn’t necessarily mean you are saved. We need to allow the faith that we have placed in Christ to affect us.

-The first story in verse 15 is a very practical situation in the church of the day.

-The biggest takeaway from this is that our works are a product of our faith, we do not do works to be saved.

-Sometimes things God asks us to do feel like they are contradicting and telling us to not do works. Like the story of the beggar. We need to have our faith strong enough to realize the difference. The more you hear the spirit speak, the more you will recognize it is him.

-The simple mindset change may not lead to a change in what our works produce. But it is a large change in our foundation of faith. We must realize that without works saving us, there is no tangible measuring stick to figure out if our faith is saving faith. But that is exactly what James is talking about when he says, “Show me your faith apart from your works.” It is impossible to show your faith without works but we cannot be doing works for the purpose of showing our faith.

-Even though faith is what saves us, faith that saves, goes to work. Even Paul says so in Ephesians.

-And then when we understand that faith leads to works, and faith without works is dead, we look towards Luke 23 and see that Jesus tells the thief on the cross that he will be in paradise with him even though no works were done. But this only emphasizes that works are not a requirement.

-The love your neighbor as yourself comes from Leviticus 19.

-The need to view others all on the same level also applies to how we view others in comparison to ourselves.

-Verses 6 and 7 hammer on the point of partiality. The world tends to uplift the wrong people anyways. The world has a habit of elevating people who do not have their best interest in mind. Culturally speaking, the rich were the ones that were leading the way persecuting Christians.

-The main takeaway with this section is we need to take a step back and ask the question, “Who am I elevating and who am I sidelining?” How do you actually love people? How does it differ between ones we love and those we don’t.

This week’s episode goes over James 1:19-27.

Show Notes:

-We know there is a God simply by being around his creation. As human beings, we have a certain inclination to God. We know something is out there beyond us.

-God’s desire to have a relationship with us isn’t earned but implanted in us from God.

-We don’t do good works to get saved, we do good works because we are saved. God cares more about who you are, not what you do. If you believe the opposite, then you are thinking that your works can save you and the cross means nothing. Jesus often taught that people who put their faith in their works were wrong compared to those who put their works in their faith.

-We must remember James separates being slow to anger and speak. We must make sure our anger isn’t preventing us from listening. Just because we don’t interrupt, it doesn’t mean we were listening.

-We need to remember how to disagree without being disagreeable. Even if we can’t agree, it doesn’t mean we can’t love one another.

This week’s episode goes over James 1:8-18.

Show Notes:

-James sometimes feels like it jumps around. It has been called by some biblical scholars as the Proverbs of the New Testament. Not only because it’s focus on practicality, but on wisdom as well. Jesus’s influence on James is also shown in this section.

-James 1:9 continues James’s talk about common issues Christians must face and overcome. He starts the chapter with preparing us for trials then moves to trusting God’s wisdom over our own. He continues this theme with the issue of worrying about physical wealth on earth. Verse 12 referencing verse 2 bookends the trials section. However…

-Verse 13, James begins making a very important distinction. Good comes from God, God will not tempt you as part of your trials. The temptation is just your own nature and desires being exposed.

-He explains that every good thing is from God and bad things are from our own nature.

-An interesting study for those interested is to look up all the different theories of what the “Crown of Life” mentioned in verse 12 is. There are many different ones and of course, James never does fully describe what he means.

This week’s episode goes over James 1:5-8.

Show Notes:

-“Let him ask in faith”. James is all about putting faith in practice.

-We need to make sure we don’t ask God for wisdom to get an opinion like we would be asking for a friend but as instructions.

-Our entire lives will be full of making decisions between what we desire or God’s direction. The question then becomes do we love God more than all the rest.

-To stop us from being double-minded, then we have to put our focus on Christ.

-If we follow God to the letter, everything will work out in the end. Even if we don’t see the fruit instantly.

-God won’t get mad at us for asking. In fact, he wants ust to ask.

This week’s episode goes over James 1:1-4.

Show Notes:

-We can have joy in our trials because God is using those circumstances more and more like him.

-“Various” extends from really minor to really major things.

-1 Peter 1:6 is very similar to James 1:2.

-These trials we go through are prods to go closer to God.

-These trials are to strengthen our foundation in God. Matthew 7 says no matter our foundation, the storms are coming.

-We need to remember to stop asking God to remove the trial but instead, start asking God how we grow to get through the trial.

-These trials will build up to something bigger down the line. (Van Halen and the M&Ms)

-These trials will hurt for us to properly change just as gold is needed to be melted down to remove the impurities.

-If we remember to fix our eyes on the destination, we can find comfort in the reason of the trial.

-Be open about your trials and share your story! Sharing can have a positive effect in three ways.

1) Someone that has experienced can help guide you

2) Someone currently experiencing it can walk through it with you

3) Someone who will go through it can ask you for guidance

-Be prepared for James: This book is a tough book with many challenges but as James 1:2 says, count these trials as joy.

-Accept the challenges: James will challenge you spiritually. To grow in your faith, you need to accept these challenges. They will provide the momentum to get you going. We can’t just conform or “Christianize”. We need to move to become Christlike.

Welcome to the Asking for a Friend Podcast.

This week’s question is “What are the 3 most important things for a new believer to do immediately?”

Show Notes:

Baptism:

  • In the early church, we are always told, “Repent, Believe,then be Baptized.” (Acts 2:38)

  • Acts 16 with the Philippian Jailer.

  • Baptism isn’t required for salvation but a sign of aninward reality of the change in your heart and a sign of obedience.

  • If you have accepted Christ as your savior and wouldlike more information on baptism, contact Corner Bible Church or your local church.

Join a solid local church and smallgroup of believers

  • Christianity in the New Testament is always takingplace in the confines of community.

  • Important to find a biblical church. Be wary ofchurches caught in tradition and culture.

  • Hebrews says to not neglect meeting together.

  • The early church in Acts met together daily to grow.

  • Church is not meant to just fill your cup but to alsopour into.

  • A survey from Summit Church revealed that people didn’tfeel growth in their spiritual life until they joined a serving team, not just a small group.

Read your Bible – Dive deeper

  • Find a Bible Study that works for you and engage in Goddaily (5-5-5 method)

  • We’ve been given in God’s word as what to do and heuses it to speak to us

  • A great part to start is John or any of the gospels. James and Acts are also good to continue the study. Find a partner to go through to hold you accountable is a great way to keep on track.

  • Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13:1-23, Mark 4:1-20,Luke 8:4-15) talks about new believers that don’t place their energy into firmly rooting themselves in God and wither away.

This is a great question for both new believers and established believers. As new believers, it’s a great starting point. For established believers, it’s a good time to take an inventory of our own lives to make sure we are still doing these things. Also, it’s a great list to use when helping new believers become established.

Welcometo the Asking for a Friend Podcast.

Thisweek’s question is “So I have a friend who is doing something Iknow is strictly against God’s word. I want to help push her toward the rightdecision. But I feel like if I tell her parents or grandparents, that she’llget mad and not want to be my friend anymore. I keep praying for her, but itfeels like I should do more. What would you recommend doing?”

Show Notes:

There are 3 steps to take prior toinvolving the parents/grandparents:

  1. Prayer (1 Timothy 2:1)

a. For God to work in them

b. To confess your own sins prior to the conversation(Matthew 7:1-5)

  1. Approach the Conversation in Love

a. Don’t go in guns blazing but make sure they know you are coming from a point of compassion. That this conversation needs to take place because of your love for them.

b. Our motive must be loving with restoration in mind (1 Corinthians and 2 Corinthians 2:4).

  1. Approach the Conversation with Scripture

a. Make sure the conversation is rooted in scripture. You should have scripture ready to rely on or it will just look like your opinion.

b. This will show your friend that it is not your standard they are breaking, but God’s.

There are two outcomes to this very tough conversation. Both mark the beginning of the journey and not the end. Ifyour friend agrees and repents, then you walk along with them and provide accountability and sharing in each other’s burdens (Galations 6:1-2).

If they deny any wrongdoing, give them a chance to come clean to their parents first prior to addressing it with them.You may find it easier to involve your own parents for the conversation, especially if they have a relationship with your friend’s parents as well. In fact, it may be a good idea for any outcome to eventually involve their parents. Remember to approach all conversations involving this topic in the same ways as described above.

If still your friend denies and may break off any friendship, remember that it isn’t your fault but they may need to wander for a bit. God will still be able to use their time apart to further his plans for them. Remember the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32) needed to have time alone to realize what he had at his father’s house. So pray for their well being and be ready to welcome them back when they return.
