With origins dating back to the eighteenth century, the Faculty of Engineering (FEUP) is the largest faculty of U.PORTO. FEUP’s educational model is designed to prepare students for successful careers in engineering and beyond. Their PhD programs, candidates and researchers are supported by doctoral education initiatives such as: soft landing & onboarding; 11 transferable skills courses (research, soft and entrepreneurship skills); the Doctoral Congress in Engineering ; career counseling; mental health & wellbeing services and; the Innovation and technology transfer services.
With 249 labs, 25 I&D Units and 25 spin-off companies, FEUP is at the heart of Porto Innovation District and is the engine behind the success of the Science and Technology Park of the University of Porto, UPTEC. FEUP is also helping to turn the northern region of Portugal into a centre for innovation, demonstrating how active universities can lead the move to smart growth.
FEUP is our host for the fifth Annual PRIDE Conference in Porto, Portugal this May. In this Episode we talk about the conference topic, research integrity and what to expect of the conference overall.

Research Ethics and Research Integrity are also an issue in Open Science and Citizen Science. As part of their training, these topics should be taught to Doctoral Candidates at the beginning of their career. ROSiE is a three-year project funded by HORIZON2020. ROSiE project’s mission is to develop and openly share novel practical tools that ensure research ethics and research integrity in open science and citizen science. Research Integrity is an important topic in #doctoraleducation. A thorough knowledge about how to conduct research according to research standards should be part of any doctoral training experience. But just providing trainings and knowledge on the topic usually is not enough to set up a healthy research practice. The SOPs4RI project (https://sops4ri.eu/) has developed a toolbox to help research institutions cultivate research integrity.

Today we will take a closer look at Eurodoc, the European Council of Doctoral Candidates and Junior Researchers. It is an international federation of 29 national organisations of PhD candidates, and more generally of young researchers from 26 countries of the European Union and the Council of Europe. This episode is especially directed at newcomers in the area. My interview partner is Agnieszka Żyra. Agnieszka is a PhD candidate at the Institute of Production Engineering at Cracow University of Technology and she is the president of Eurodoc. She was elected in July 2021.

We talked to Alexander Hasgall, the Head of the EUA-CDE about activities and goals. We also also asked Alexander what he believes the current major trends in doctoral education are.

Like so many, in the world of transferable skills training we scrambled in 2020 to switch to providing our support online with little prior training or experience to draw on. The switch was a deeply challenging exercise - and many of us have had very positive experience, and we appreciate the many benefits that come from digital practice. Nevertheless, for some there were stiff obstacles of skills gaps, schedule clashes and content or method that cannot be easily converted. The experience of trial and error can be a stressful one, so it was clear to the CUSO in Switzerland that, after a solid eight months of work, action and rush behind us, we needed to provide an opportunity for our trainers to listen to and support their risk-taking, as well as to recognise and share our combined learnings.
In this podcast, Ilaria Orsi, head of the transferable skills programme at the CUSO, is joined by Maura Hannon, a trainer with the CUSO and expert in social media and digital work communication in general, and by Verity Elston, head of career advice for the Graduate Campus at the University of Lausanne. They summarise the discussions held with the CUSO trainers over three separate workshops in December 2020, covering: - The experience of switching to online format: what people miss, what they enjoy - The learnings and best practices shared by trainers and programme managers - The ongoing challenges as we continue to provide our support online in 2021

Todays podcast is recording of our webinar on Research Careers well-being and mental health, which took place on February 3rd 2021.
Our speakers in this webinar were Gabor Kismihok and Desiree Dickerson. Gabor is the head of the Learning and Skills Analytics research Group at the Leibniz Information Center for Science and Technology (TIB) in Hannover, Germany. He also chairs the recently started COST Action on Researcher Mental Health. Desiree is a clinical psychologist who specialises in the mental health and well-being of researchers and the academic community. Having worked as a researcher in New Zealand, Australia and Austria, Desiree now works globally with universities, lab groups, and academics in the pursuit of a healthier approach to research.

Alina Adriana Minea, professor for engineering and Director of the Doctoral Office at the Technical University of Iasi in Romania and describes the impact of the Covid-19 crisis, especially for the area of doctoral education. She is especially worried about the decline of enrolment numbers due to the Crisis. For Alina it was important to hear how other universities deal with this, so we decided to record a podcast on this topic to start a discussion.

This episode reflects on the history behind the Salzburg Principles. When in February 2005 Rectors and Vice Rectors from all over Europe met up in Salzburg to discuss doctoral education important foundations for the next years were laid. This meeting brought about change in all of Europe. Melita Kovacevic was part of this game-changing event and shares her memories and insights with us.
