Ifeduba about her journey of resilience, mentorship and overcoming obstacles in her path.From growing up in Nigeria and working in her father’s business from the age of 10, to facing five years of university rejections, Dr. Amaka's story is one of persistence and determination. Although Pharmacy was her first choice, she started in Plant Science and Technology. With guidance from Dr. Patrick, she rose from an “average student” to becoming the best graduate among 20,000 students at Texas A&M University, USA.Her toughest battle came during her PhD studies, when she was diagnosed with cancer and discovered a 7lb aggressive tumour. Through faith, mindset, and visualisation, she fought for her life while imagining herself graduating as valedictorian and she did!

Born and raised in London with strong Caribbean roots—my father from Jamaica and my mother from Guyana—I was shaped by the strength and struggles of a big family with limited resources. My birthday falls on Christmas Eve, which often meant no gifts and shared celebrations. It taught me early that nothing would come easy.I started life on the track—literally. As a teen, I ran for the borough of Wandsworth in the 100m sprint and 75m hurdles before finding my passion for football at 15. By 19, I was playing semi-professionally and attending trials with professional clubs, while studying Sports and Exercise Science at university.Then at 21, everything changed. A ruptured Achilles ended my dream. Lost and uncertain, I had no backup plan—until I watched a friend grow his career in tech. With no prior experience, I began teaching myself web development using free websites and YouTube. Six months later, I’d mastered HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Five months after that—C++ and Java. No paid courses. Just relentless drive.Soon after, I landed my first role building Salesforce CRM systems. Within a year, I was headhunted. Two years later, I founded Software Everything Ltd, delivering solutions for major clients including Net-a-Porter, OVO Energy, Telefonica, and Capgemini.Now, I’m preparing to launch a social media platform built from scratch by my team—something I believe will shift how people connect online.My journey—from the streets of Southwest London to the boardrooms of global companies—is deeply personal. I broke a cycle, became the first in my family to attend university, and now provide for my mother through private healthcare. I’ve also explored entrepreneurship through my former fashion brand Reganalds, which was featured at London and Paris Fashion Weeks and worn at the Cannes Film Festival.I’ve chosen to delay fatherhood so I can build a legacy strong enough to give my future children everything I didn’t have. Today, I’m in a long-term relationship with my Brazilian partner, and I consider her children my own blessing.When not building the next phase of my business empire, you might find me supporting Manchester United or enjoying a good football match.Every step—from athlete to developer, developer to architect, architect to entrepreneur—has been self-taught, no mentor and grounded in resilience. He is a researcher in disruptive pedagogies and practices‘facilitating learning from the margins’, which foregrounds co-creation in enabling marginalised student voices through decolonising, anti-racism and social justice as part of pedagogy.
He authored ‘Disrupting the Discourse: A Co-creation Framework for Centering Racial Justice in Higher Education.’ He manages the Changemakers, a student partner initiative working with students to embed racial and social justiceprinciples as part of the curriculum.
Kevin uses storytelling, podcasting and digital content creation as part of his platform Lounge Akademics and collaborates with companies and brands committed to social justice as part of knowledge exchange activities and consultancy.

I visited Ghana in 2003 and it left a lasting impression on me, so I was very happy to speak with Samantha Barrett-Acquah who moved from the UK to Ghana in 2008.

During my training, I realised that there was much more to funerals than we know. There is a changing face in funerals. Families are no longer being dictated by establishments that have little empathy or passion for funerals. As an independent Celebrant and Funeral Arranger, I encourage my families to be creative with their funeral ceremonies.

I am a greeting cards addict! I so love the process of selecting the cards to writing personal messages for my family and friends.
I also love receiving them too.
So, you can imagine how excited I was when I had the opportunity to interview Sarah Bishop, who is the founder of Jambo Cards, which is an online diverse greeting cards retailer. Jambo Cards fills a gap in the current retail industry by stocking a vast range of black greeting cards and works with 10-12 black creatives.
Sarah states 'it's important that consumers feel represented when purchasing goods, so Jambo Cards aims to help with that’. I fully agree and have purchased a few cards from the site myself!
Sarah is also a Chartered Accountant by trade and contracts for film and TV. She is also the Founder of www.businessofcolour.com a recourse for Black businesses and start-ups, which shares tips for ways to access finance and shares key tools for effective business and charity management.

It was with great pleasure that Zara Muirhead the Founding Director of Love Literacy, joined me for this episode of Employability Matters.
Love Literacy is an English and Maths Intervention Provision which was established to raise the academic achievement of all children. Zara has over 13 years’ experience as a qualified teacher, specialising in literacy intervention, mainstream education and Inclusion.
Love Literacy which has been in operation for 8 years includes an online learning platform, ensuring there are no barriers to children’s progress- not even a National lockdown.
Her Master’s degree and middle leadership experience has contributed to the success of her work with Love Literacy and hundreds of students from age 5 through to adults.
Most recently, Zara has self-published a creative journal entitled, I Heard the Word. Inspired by her 2 children, this journal provides a space for reflection, inspiration and personal growth.

A career within the British Armed Forces.
The British Army says it is on track to meet its annual recruitment target for only the second time in eight years amid tentative signs that the pandemic crisis has acted as a “rallying cry to serve”. The Guardian 7/1/21
Apparently applications rise during periods of economic weakness. With high unemployment and economic uncertainty, the British Army might be a great career option for some.
This episode features my special guest Jameelia Cooper who is currently serving in the Royal Signals. They are the communication beacon of the army.
Jameelia attended the University of West London achieving a BSc (Hons) in Social Work, however she soon discovered that she wanted a more arduous career. In her final year of university, Jameelia was inspired by an advert encouraging people to join the Army Reserves. Fast forward, she joined the Army Reserves in 2014 then decided to go full time and joined the regular British Army in 2016.
Working as a Communications Systems Operator, she operates a variety of communication kits and equipment, such as handheld airwave radio to building portable satellites. In addition her job role gives her opportunities to take part in ceremonial duties, providing situational awareness for the Royals and Heads of States.

We have heard in the news about the high pressures facing teachers, especially during the coronavirus pandemic. I am sure you will agree with me that all key workers are doing a marvellous job during these unprecedented times.
Just recently we heard in the news that the UK Prime Minister welcomed a significant uplift in key public sector roles (2/1/21). For example, the commitment to recruit 41,000 new trainee teachers in 2020 will be ramped up throughout 2021.
Joining us today my friend and special guest Natalie Robb, will be sharing her career journey and talking about her current role as - Head of Media Studies & Lead English Practitioner within a London secondary school.
After successfully completing her A'Levels at the Brit School in acting and theatre studies, Natalie went onto university to study English Literature, Publishing and Media. During her final year of university, Natalie worked as a Teaching Assistant; it was here her passion and love of teaching developed. After carrying out various roles within the media industry, she embarked upon her teacher training programme at the Institute of Education.
Over the last 12 years Natalie has undertaken the following roles: Head of KS3 English, Deputy Head of Sixth form, Head of English, and now her current role as Head of Media Studies and Lead Practitioner of English.

For this episode we focus on mental health and showcase an essential specialist service founded during the coronavirus pandemic - The Carol McKenzie Talk Service.
My guest Carol McKenzie, founded this service, which offers therapeutic informed programmes for vulnerable and at risk children, young people and families. As a Therapeutic and Systemic Practitioner with a training background in Social Work, Carol draws on an extensive professional background in education and social care and is committed to improving mental well-being for children, young people and families.
Carol also views herself as a survivor of developmental trauma having lived through chronic childhood illness and hospitalisation. Born and raised in Hackney, East London she reflects on the ways these adverse experiences impacted her well-being and capacity to achieve her potential within mainstream education.
It is Carol’s personal context that passionately inspired her higher education journey in professional social work. She has since dedicated over 22 years through diverse multi-agency settings, to empowering and supporting young people and families who experience multiple issues and complex needs. Carol’s professional portfolio includes; co-ordinating one of London’s first Pupil Referral Unit's, managing an East London Connexions Service for vulnerable young people, co-ordinating local authority parenting and support services for vulnerable and at risk children and families.
In 2016, Carol embarked on further post-graduate professional training in mental health. Through the renowned Tavistock & Portman NHS Trust, she engaged in an intensive multi-disciplinary programme of mental health and clinical training, specialising in adolescents. Thereafter, developing her clinical work with families through Systemic training. In recent years, she has undertaken a number of clinical placements, therapeutic informed counselling and mentoring work with children and young people within schools, looked after children services and amongst families referred by local authorities.
In 2020 Carol became the founder and Director of Carol McKenzie Talk Service, offering three distinct therapeutic informed programmes for vulnerable and at risk children, young people and families. These being; Talk2Grow Youth Counselling, Talk2Grow Family Plus Programme and Talk2Grow Mentoring.Carol’s mission is to increase opportunities for children, young people and families to overcome barriers to potential, applying tools for strengthening individual and family functioning. She applies a client centred approach to services focus on raising aspirations, empowerment, strengthening families and mental well-being.
Carol sees her greatest achievements being a mother of 3 awesome adult children and 5 grandchildren.

Covid generation: UK youth unemployment ‘set to triple to 80s levels’. (The Guardian 7.10.20)
Shocking, these are the type of headlines we are now seeing amid rising concerns over job losses.
The Resolution Foundation warns that young people could be lost due to long periods out of work.
It is my aim that this episode will truly encourage young people to keep pushing through and not to give up on their dream careers. With coronavirus redundancies hitting those aged 16-24 the hardest, my guest Renee Lewis provides a great insight into her role as an Advanced (HR Talent/ Associate) Apprentice.
Renee speaks with such passion about her apprenticeship role, as well as talking through her beauty business which was set up during the height of the coronavirus pandemic.

Here is a little bit about Renee…
I am 21 years old and have been working in HR for nearly 2 years. My first exposure to Human Resources was in 2018 when I started an advanced apprenticeship. From having my first ever HR role, this allowed me to attain many key skills.
During the coronavirus pandemic and alongside my apprenticeship role, I have joined forces with my best friend to start a beauty / make up business called Paradise Parloure selling Siberian Mink Lashes.

For Episode 5 (recorded August 2020), Andre Dalphinis shares his career journey, working within post 16 education. Alongside his teaching role Andre set up a Caribbean rum punch brand called Bay Noir, which is inspired by St. Lucia’s spices, culture and vibrancy.
I must say this is the best rum punch I have tasted by far! A must buy!
After finishing his A Levels Andre, attended university and studied Law, with it already in mind to teach Law. He completed his Law degree and worked in the Legal field before taking on a PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in Education) within post compulsory education in 2009-2010 at The Institute of Education. Since then, he has passionately taught Law, while delivering other subjects such as Business and Politics.

Christina is a treasury professional with over 10 years of operational experience from a diverse range of industries including advertising & marketing, oil & gas, financial services and business support.
In her current role she oversees the management of cash and foreign exchange activities for Omnicom. Her main skillset includes foreign exchange management, cash management, credit risk analysis and regulatory reporting. She is highly skilled in problem solving, finding process improvements and counterparty management.

I have been drawing since the age of 5 and after pursuing teaching as a progression I’ve decided to return to my first love of Art exclusively."
