I had a strong reaction to the announcement that calorie content will now be shown on menus and at point of purchase in most food service businesses in Britain. And I know you did too. In today's episode, we unpack this legislation with dietitian Maeve Hanan (@dieteticallyspeaking) and the alarm being raised on behalf of those who are vulnerable to eating disorders and navigating recovery. Maeve also provides excellent and practical skills to help you manage the potential impact of this mandate.

This week I’m joined by the wonderful Dr Elysa Roberts who has been featured in the recent Butterfly Foundation campaign, an eating disorder looks like me. This is such a crucial and important campaign, highlighting the voices of people who don’t fit the harmful eating disorder stereotype. That stereotype is a leading reason why so many people find accessing treatment difficult, if not impossible.
In a survey conducted by Butterfly, they found that 57% of Australians believe that eating disorders mostlly affect young girls . There is also an enduring belief that they are something we grow out of or can be too smart for. Elysa felt unable to put her hand up for help for decades for precisely these reasons.
In our chat today, we discuss how Elysa developed an eating disorder, why it continued and the very real shame so many feel when reaching out for support.

At the height of her battle with an eating disorder, Millie Thomas was told there was no hope left. Her treatment team stopped ongoing treatment and advised her to start preparing for the end of her life. Millie is now four years recovered and helping others to overcome their own eating disorder battles, as both a recovery coach and advocate. She has worked tirelessly with End ED towards the creation of Australia’s very first residential inpatient facility, to be located on the Sunshine Coast.
In this episode, Millie and I chat all about what it means to be a fully recovered coach, her journey out of her disorder and what we both find the most infuriating about outdated treatment approaches. Have a listen anywhere you get your podcasts (Spotify, Apple, Soundcloud we’re everywhere!). You can’t miss out on meeting this incredible woman - someone I am proud to know.
