When plumbers and electricians collide! Had the absolute pleasure of chatting with Damon Blakemore from Blakemore Plumbing Heating and Renewables. We got into MCS and how that works (or sometimes doesn't) for electricians and plumbers. Along with the similarities we have in our trades from short course training, job proposals, miss selling, bad business practices, apprenticeship decline and the huge upside that comes with the renewable sector. It is great to hear from a small business owner in the trenches trying to make it work and deliver quality systems for consumers. Craig Wiltshire joins me to discuss the brand new domestic experienced worker route!

This is suitable for people with 3 years working experience in the domestic sector who are currently working in that environment and want to attain the domestic electrician standard.

You must have 3 years relevant experience and existing qualifications in industry. The evidence built through the assessment can only be from the date after which you start it!

NET are putting in place the AM2 ED for end point assessment and it looks like a domestic gold card will be forthcoming. I will confirm this with the JIB soon for clarification.

TESP, NET and those working hard to develop these mechanisms to raising standards and opportunities have done a great job here. We discuss the differences to the city and guilds 2365, 8202, EAL and apprenticeship qualifications. Along with the pros and cons to all.

It was interesting to learn the 2365 is not funded for learners while the 8202 is. Also some key differences in the delivery and exam processes.

We also discus the bigger issues around young apprentices ending up on these courses due to a lack of options in terms of apprenticeships.

Its a really difficult nut to crack and eye opening around the miss selling of adult/re-trainee training options.

I hear horror stories every day (no exaggeration) with some success stories mixed in for context.

The course is changing from the 2919 to 2921-31 for fully qualified electricians. We explain some of the reasons and some of the things electricians and apprentices will need to know.

Eddie shares his insight and experiences primarily in controls, BMS and all the magic that goes into making commercial boiler systems work.

EP2 of a new mini series about 2391 this time covering the all important exam and what you need to know.

Myself, Jamie Blatant and Craig Buist run through what the 2391 exam entails!

Jamie is a current lecturer and 20 year spark on the tools.

Craig is currently head of department at Waltham Forrest college and has over 20 years experience in the industry.

2391-052 Duration: 120 minutes and 60 questions

Understand requirements for inspection and testing 13 questions - 22 %
Understand safety management procedures when undertaking inspection and testing 3 questions - 3%
Understand the requirements for the inspection of electrical installations 11 questions - 19%
Understand the requirements for testing electrical installations 33 questions - 56%

We discus the exam layout, time frame and techniques. Along with the structure and importance of reading and understanding questions.

We will build this into a useful series to hopefully help prepare people for a 2391 course. This will not be training for the course, more what to expect and pointing at awesome content that might help already in existence and the places to get experience and preparation for it!

Leo is currently working as an electrical trainee and looking to further his training to allow completion of his portfolio and work towards his gold card.

He is attending night school to complete his English and Maths and carrying out training at his expense via remote learning.

A chat around the grants available for employers hiring apprentices in UK at the moment.

Specifically the up to £4k grant available to employers and some of the pros and cons.

This is based on my own experiences and those from the 750+ people we have helped back into work.

Apply for the hire a new apprentice payment You can apply for new apprentices who joined your organisation from 1 April 2021 to 30 September 2021. You must set up an apprenticeship service account.

The incentive payment is in addition to the £1,000 employers already receive for hiring an apprentice:

aged 16 to 18 years old
under 25 with an education, health and care plan or who has been in the care of their local authority

To receive the full payment, the apprenticeship must last for at least one year.

Apprentices who joined your organisation from 1 April 2021 You will receive £3,000 for new apprentices of any age who have an employment start date of 1 April 2021 to 30 September 2021.

They must have an apprenticeship start date of 1 April 2021 to 30 November 2021.

Apprentices who joined your organisation before 1 April 2021 The application deadline for these apprentices has closed.

What you can use the payment for The payment is different to apprenticeship levy funds, so you can spend it on anything to support your organisation’s costs. For example, on uniforms, your apprentice’s travel or their salary. You do not have to pay it back.

Eligibility You can only apply for new apprentices who joined your organisation from 1 April 2021 to 30 September 2021.

You cannot apply for an existing employee who joined your organisation before 1 April 2021, even if they started an apprenticeship after this date.

How to apply You can apply for the incentive payment after you add new apprentices to your apprenticeship service account.

When you’ll get paid We cannot make any payments until we’ve received and verified your organisation and finance details. This could take up to 80 days and we may contact someone from your organisation.

We’ll make the payment in 2 equal instalments for each apprentice. The first payment is due after an apprentice completes 90 days of their apprenticeship and the second is due after 365 days.

We’ll make payments by Bacs on the 14th working day of the month. It usually takes 3 working days to process.

After you apply, you can view applications, estimated payment dates and check the status of each payment in your apprenticeship service account.

I have a run through my thoughts on the EICR system, mainly in the domestic market due to PRS changes in England.

But the same issues are widespread.

I believe investment to the apprenticeship system is the solution to a great many industry problems.

Over reliance on software and expectations of industry bodies treats the symptom but not the cause in place for me. We need to take self responsibility, raise awareness with clients and really encourage a vibrant and thriving apprenticeship system.
