Expert sales trainer John Sterling is ready to teach sales noobs how to launch their careers like a rocketship. On Noob School, he's bringing in successful members from his former sales team so you can learn from their accomplishments...and their mistakes.
On this episode of Noob School, I sit down with Jean-Michel Moreau — entrepreneur, growth strategist, and host of the Rapid Product Growth podcast — to talk about what actually helps businesses scale sustainably. Jean-Michel’s background is anything but typical. Starting in device physics and the Bay Area startup world, he eventually led global tech commercialization efforts for billion-dollar companies before shifting his focus to helping mid-market businesses grow through smarter sales systems, technology, and marketing strategy. In this conversation, we break down why so many businesses fail with paid ads, the massive difference between marketing and advertising, and why understanding real customer pain points matters more than building “brand awareness.” Jean-Michel also explains: Why “foot in the door” offers dramatically shorten sales cycles How SaaS and consulting businesses can scale more predictably Why Meta ads can outperform LinkedIn for B2B growth The metrics he looks for before taking on a client Why founder mindset is often the biggest growth bottleneck How companies can identify the fastest path to sustainable growth This episode is packed with practical advice for entrepreneurs, founders, consultants, and business owners who want to grow intelligently instead of just spending more money on marketing. Subscribe to Noob School for conversations with entrepreneurs, operators, athletes, and leaders who’ve learned what works through real experience.
In this episode of Noob School, I sit down with Jay Jackson—a former Major League pitcher who spent nearly two decades grinding it out across the MLB, minor leagues, and international baseball circuits. Jay’s story isn’t just about baseball—it’s about resilience. From getting drafted later than expected to navigating the ups and downs of a global career that took him from the U.S. to Japan, Mexico, and beyond, he learned how to stay grounded, positive, and focused when most people would’ve quit. Over a 17+ year professional career, he played for multiple MLB organizations and built a reputation not just for performance—but for mindset. We talk about what it really takes to last that long in a high-pressure environment—and why success has less to do with talent and more to do with discipline, intentionality, and the people you surround yourself with. Jay also shares the philosophy behind his book, 9 Innings to Living Your Best Life—a framework for living with purpose, maintaining a positive mindset, and leading both on and off the field. The book breaks life into “innings,” each focused on habits like gratitude, accountability, and mental toughness. We get into: Why adversity is your biggest advantage (if you let it be) The power of starting your day with intention How elite performers stay mentally locked in Why “being where your feet are” might be the most important skill you can build The role of mentorship in long-term success Jay is now transitioning into his next chapter—focusing on coaching, mentorship, and helping the next generation develop both as athletes and as people. If you’re trying to build something, lead a team, or just get better every day, this conversation will hit home.
Welcome back to Noob School! Today, I’m joined by a very special guest and a longtime friend of the show, Amy Brusky. Amy is the President of Kolbe Corp, and the work her company does is a huge reason reason I was able to grow a tiny company into a massive success.
Years ago, I was a young sales manager struggling to get my team to make cold calls. A consultant named Bill Lee introduced me to the Kolbe Index, and it completely changed my life. It taught me how to stop whining about my team’s performance and start hiring the right kind of people for the job.
In this episode, Amy and I dive deep into why understanding your "doing" mind—your instinctive strengths—is the secret to finding what her stepmother and Kolbe founder Kathy Kolbe called "the freedom to be yourself".
What we’re talking about in this episode:
The Three Parts of the Mind: Why your personality and intelligence only tell half the story, and why your instinctive way of taking action is the missing piece to your success.
Building Your Hiring Avatar: I share my personal "recipe" for hiring, from the local "beer test" to making sure their Kolbe numbers match the role before I even meet them.
Sales Strengths vs. Role Requirements: We discuss why some people are built for high-pressure cold calling while others, like a guy I once hired with high Factfinder numbers, are the only ones who can close a $25 million government deal that takes two years to finish.
Permission to "Procrastinate": If you’re like me and do your best work at the eleventh hour, Amy explains why that’s actually "active procrastination" and how to work with that energy instead of feeling guilty.
Career Wisdom for Your 20s: My advice to young professionals: stop trying to just "get a job" and start figuring out where you add the most value with the least amount of friction.
If you’re a leader trying to get your team right, or if you’re just starting out and want to find a career where the day "flies by," you don't want to miss this conversation.

My son Jack Sterling returns to Noob School for his fourth appearance — officially becoming the most frequent guest on the show. This one dives deep into what Jack’s been up to lately — from his growing business, Cloud Hound, to his work with Upstate Warrior Solution helping veterans transition into entrepreneurship. We start off trading thoughts on our favorite podcasts and how shows like Lions Led by Donkeys and My First Million have influenced the way Jack thinks about leadership, learning, and risk-taking. Jack shares how fantasy football and analytics sparked his fascination with data — eventually leading him to pursue a master’s degree in data analytics at Clemson. But the heart of the episode is about purpose — how veterans can rediscover team, mission, and structure through entrepreneurship. Jack breaks down how his program at the Rupert Hughes Veteran Center supports veterans, first responders, and their families across the Upstate by helping them navigate healthcare, education, and business ownership. He shares inspiring success stories from entrepreneurs who’ve come through the program — from a veteran-run medical training company using human remains for realistic field instruction, to another launching Upstate South Carolina’s first paddle tennis facility. We also dig into the lessons he’s learned running Cloud Hound — from ditching international business to focusing on “cyber and fiber” solutions for local clients, and why most security breaches start with people, not technology. Jack explains his live training on social engineering, phishing, and why emotional manipulation is hackers’ easiest path in. To wrap it up, he shares the book that’s had the biggest impact on him — “Tribe” by Sebastian Junger — and why it reframed his entire view of community, fulfillment, and the difference between the military and civilian worlds. If you’ve ever wondered how to find purpose after leaving a structured environment, or how to turn your skills into impact, this one’s for you. When I sat down with Lamar Flatt — former Harvard basketball player, USC law graduate, and now partner at Best & Flatt, P.A. — I knew we’d cover a lot of ground. Lamar’s story takes him from the court to the courtroom, starting his law career in Savannah, GA, before returning to South Carolina, and he’s built a reputation as both a sharp attorney and a lifelong learner.
In our conversation, we talk about why curiosity matters, the importance of always seeking knowledge, and a perspective we discuss called “ant theory.” Imagine a closet that, to a colony of ants, is their entire world. They don’t realize there’s an entire house beyond it, or even more beyond the house. The same goes for us as humans: there’s always more to discover if we keep looking and keep learning.
Along the way, Lamar shares stories from his own path in law, how he approaches cases, and the mindset that’s carried him through challenges and opportunities. If you’re serious about growth, staying curious, and seeing the bigger picture in your own life and career, this episode will resonate.

Michael Pace is back on Noob School for the third time, and every conversation with him feels like catching up with an old friend. We swap stories from our careers, dig into the pros and cons of comp plans, and talk about how AI tools are changing the way we work in sales and entrepreneurship. One of my favorite parts of this conversation is how Michael frames “being a noob” — not as a weakness, but as a real strength when you’re willing to try new things, stretch yourself, and build confidence in new areas of business and life. Michael’s experience and perspective always bring practical lessons for sales professionals and entrepreneurs alike.

I’m thrilled to welcome Bill Rice to Noob School for Episode 151 — joining us over Zoom to talk about how counterintelligence thinking, data-driven marketing, and AI are reshaping lead generation and business exits.
Bill’s one of those rare people who’s walked serious, structured careers in two very different worlds. He started his professional life as a U.S. Air Force officer running counterespionage and information-warfare activities — an experience that sharpened his analytical approach to patterns, risk, and human behavior. From there he moved into entrepreneurship and marketing, founding Kaleidico and later Bill Rice Strategy Group to help companies build predictable lead-generation engines. Over the last 20+ years he’s focused on fintech and B2B clients, building scalable sales systems and teaching teams how to convert marketing into reliable revenue.
In this wide-ranging conversation we dig into:
How lessons from counterespionage translate to modern marketing: spotting patterns, validating signals, and avoiding confirmation bias.
Practical frameworks Bill uses to build predictable demand-generation for fintech and SaaS companies — what to measure, what to automate, and where human judgment still wins.
Real talk on AI: what founders should actually expect from AI today, how to integrate it into content and outreach without losing product-market fit, and cheap experiments that move the needle.
Preparing a business for acquisition: what buyers look for in lead-gen systems and the operational readiness that increase valuation.
If you run a startup, lead a sales or marketing team, or are thinking about scaling (or selling) your business, this episode is full of tactical steps and thought experiments you can use tomorrow. Pull up a chair, grab your notes, and let’s learn how strategic thinking, data, and a little military-grade pattern recognition can make your marketing less messy and more profitable.

This episode is packed with practical wisdom and thought-provoking takeaways for business owners, sales leaders, and anyone looking to grow both their people and their company.

In Episode 148 of Noob School, I talk with Kevin Farrell — a retired U.S. Army Colonel and now the President and CEO of Battlefield Leadership. Kevin’s career has spanned the military, academia, consulting, and even Hollywood, where he served as the senior military advisor on the Brad Pitt film Fury. But through all of it, one theme has stayed constant: leadership matters, especially under pressure. We talk about how his experience leading troops in combat shaped his understanding of leadership — and why those lessons still apply to business leaders today. Kevin shares stories from his work helping companies grow stronger through historical case studies and dives into some of the most common leadership mistakes he sees in the corporate world. We also touch on the difference between managing and truly leading, and how teams can make that shift. Kevin brings a unique mix of hard-earned experience and academic depth, with advanced degrees from Columbia University and a long list of published work. Whether you're building a team, growing a business, or just trying to become a better leader — this conversation has something for you.
On this episode of Noob School, I sit down with Monica Seitz—a sharp young professional who’s already packing a lot of experience and perspective into the early stages of her sales career. Monica grew up on a farm in Kentucky, where she spent her early years showing horses and getting her first hands-on experience with sales at horse auctions.
That kind of upbringing tends to shape a person—teaching responsibility, communication, and the art of the deal long before any formal training. Monica took those early lessons with her to Furman University, where she studied Sales and got involved with the Hill Institute. Along the way, she also ran track, spent a semester abroad in Barcelona, and started carving out her path in the medical and health sales space.
We talk about how shadowing her uncle—a surgeon—opened her eyes to the world of medical device sales, and why she’s now setting her sights on Australia to launch the next chapter of her career. Monica also shares some of the small but meaningful moments that helped shape her direction—including a few pieces of advice I gave her early on.
She’s thoughtful, driven, and not afraid to take big swings. Whether you’re exploring a future in sales or just like hearing how real careers get built, Monica’s story is a great example of how early experiences, global exposure, and curiosity can combine into something exciting.

TELL ME WHO YOUR FRIENDS ARE, AND I’LL TELL YOU WHO YOU ARE
Sounds cliche and overused, but this really makes sense especially with John Sterling’s subject today. John talks about The Rule of 5, where our character and being become the average 5 people we always hang out with. Find out how you can make sure you become aligned with the right people by tuning in to this latest episode of Noob School.
WISDOM FOR THE NOOBS
JOHN: You always have the choice of where you want to lean on
“You just need to understand that you have a choice on which way you lean. Now, I'm not suggesting that you fire all your friends that aren’t business leaders, but you can certainly if you want to, if you want to be kind of on that side of the fence, you can just lean that way, and what I mean is, pick your people that you'd like to hang out with or you think they're going places that you'd like to go.”
JOHN: What happens when you don’t make a choice
“If you don't make a choice, what typically happens is you just get pulled one way or another do you typically get pulled the wrong way.”

JOHN: Plan the good stuff for your future
“All I'll say about the future is it'd be smart to put some good stuff on your calendar, to try to make that future as good as possible. I wouldn't wring your hands together and worry about it too much what might happen.”

FROM THE PSYCHIATRIC WARD TO THE SALESROOM
Today’s episode features the story of Bill Lee, a story of just leaving his psychiatric profession because the pay was so low led him to a highly successful sales career. Bill is a Business Consultant at Lee Resources and the author of Gross Margin and 30 Ways Managers Shoot Themselves In The Foot. Tune in today and learn from Bill why building solid and lasting relationships with clients are better than just being competitive with price, and so much more in this latest episode of Noob School.
WISDOM FOR THE NOOBS
BILL: Stay in your industry to build solid and lasting relationships
“In my old industry, virtually everyone stayed in the industry, and the reason is if there's one key to sales that are not doesn't have anything to do with training, necessarily, it's relationships, who trust you, who knows you, who believes in you, who knows you that you have great integrity, that that's the kind of person you want to do business with. And no matter which company they work for. You tend to do business well.”
BILL: Word of the day - Integrity
“Integrity is something that I think everyone respects, everybody wants more of it, and it’s the watchword for me, I do my best to have integrity and for people to never be able to talk about me behind my back and say that you can't believe a word he says, but tell the truth, whether it sounds good or not.”

In this episode of the Noob School podcast, John Sterling is joined by his old friend and colleague, currently the Director of Partner Sales at Appian Corporation, Greg Gardner. The duo talk about their good ol’ days at DataStreams, and what Greg has been up to since he left the company. What follows is a veritable masterclass on choosing what sales job you want to do, and several tips on how to get that job too.
HIGHLIGHTS
QUOTES
Greg on always looking for ways to make things work: "There's always an opportunity. There's an opportunity within the business to make it better. There's an opportunity for individual people to take a step up during these times. When something unplanned hits, you always have an opportunity to step in somewhere."
Why you need to learn storytelling in sales, says Greg: "In my opinion, I think one of the key things that a noob can do is learn stories. Be able to recite them. You could actually wake up at 3 am and recite five stories for different verticals, different industries or what have you. I would've spent all my time doing that instead of worrying about whether I was gonna know the answer to some technical question."
Greg's tip on deciding the company and kind of sales job you like doing: "Sometimes you need to not think of it in terms of I want to work for this company or this industry and I want to be in this position. Think about, okay, what do your best days look like? When you really feel like you're engaged and living life to the fullest, what does that look like? Do you enjoy being around people, or do you enjoy more, working in solitude, like a programmer or something like that?"

John on how you can earn a client's business:"If it's a jump ball, and you're trying to get the business -- working a little bit harder and showing some genuine enthusiasm for what the prospect's problem is will more likely than not, get you the business. So don't forget, you've got to show that you want it.”

As people with very strong finance backgrounds, Todd and Brooks come with significant experience, and provide value to investors through their ability to identify, diligence, and access superior investment opportunities. Make sure to tune in until the end to learn how you can apply for a job with Trident Digital.
HIGHLIGHTS
QUOTES
Todd on the risk of joining a big company straight out of college: "People misunderstood risk. I think one of the riskiest things in the world is to join a big company of which you're never going to or very rarely climb the ranks to the CEO of a Fortune 100 company. And then those folks have to make decisions on teams that they've never met, on macroeconomic movements that you can't control."
Brooks on why they started Trident Digital: A lot of people can recognize the promise of the technology. But there's also so much noise around it, and there's a lot of fluff particularly in the up markets. So we thought we could help cut through the noise. And really what we're adding is we're gaining access to opportunities, diligence them, and then we're just... people know they can trust us and are investing with us."
How Trident Digital is providing value in the crypto space, says Todd: "The technology is growing, there's a huge opportunity to ride this technological growth but number one, invest with people that have a track record in integrity matters. We think we know that we check that box. Second is access. That was something that I had hoped we could deliver upon. Our other partner Festus Turlington who's out doing access things today which really creates values."

Scott also talks about his new company, Next Founders’ Fund, which provides support for entrepreneurs looking to fund their vision.
HIGHLIGHTS
QUOTES
Scott's thoughts on applicants that come unprepared: "I'm always amazed even with today, of the vast amount [of] information that's available on the internet, clickety-click-boom, that people will show up and still be unprepared and not have the ammunition ahead of time."
Scott on why you should choose attitude over aptitude, if you can only choose one: "You can skill somebody up. You can put them to training, you can invest in them. But it's really difficult to change attitude."
The ideal sales candidate, according to Scott: "Somebody that can go the distance, that can come in and will sit there and make the calls and do the deals at this level, and can hire and grow and keep going."

In this episode of the Noob School podcast, John Sterling talks to fellow The Citadel Alumnus, John Harrision. John and John talk about how you can ace any job interview, coming from a manager’s perspective. Their advice includes doing the easy stuff well, being well-prepared, and maximizing your personal network to get the interview. And no matter what you do, never ever be late.
HIGHLIGHTS
QUOTES
John H. on earning your interview skills through trial and error: "It's something you learn over time by making mistakes. But you also learn when you hire the right person."
John H. on coming prepared for a job interview: "The most important thing that I look for is preparation. When someone comes into an interview, they may not be the most skilled of the applicants. But you can always be the most prepared. You come in with the list of questions that you've put together based on what you know about the opportunity. You know who I am. You know my background. It's easy to get on LinkedIn."
John H. on using your personal network to find a job: "If you get a job where someone has gone to bat for you and been a reference for you, and then your entry point into that company, they have a vested interest in your success. If you go apply for everything on Indeed and LinkedIn and every other site out there where you can apply for jobs, you might get a job. But most of the time, it's going to be absent of that person that truly has a vested interest in you being successful."

Jack, who himself got his MBA after getting out of the Navy talks about the benefits of securing the degree, and also talks about when it might not be worth it.
HIGHLIGHTS
QUOTES
John on why an MBA can be worth getting for veterans: "Coming out of the military, they certainly didn't teach you business. They taught you a lot of other things but not business. So great to get a primer on business, I would think."
Jack on the ideal business to run while studying for an MBA:"It doesn't have to be the big, all or nothing hairy idea like you talked about. It can be something small that just makes a little bit of money and you just keep adding on to it."
When an MBA might not make sense, says Jack: "It's not gonna be the end-all, be-all whether you do or don't do an MBA. If you're one to start a business and be entrepreneurial, [an] MBA is probably not the right track for you. Unless it's something like Clemson's MBA Entrepreneurship track."

Why you have to be healthy to be successful in sales, says John: "I have managed over a hundred salespeople, and anyone who is kind of out of shape or not taking care of themselves, they just don't last. They can't sustain what you have to do everyday to be consistent and to have results year after year."
John on working on your craft everyday: "In sales, believe me, I have seen so many salespeople that actually did fine. They did good. But how good could they do if they really took it seriously and said, 'I'm gonna devote an hour a day to my craft. Studying, practicing, working with a colleague, trying to make my skills better so I'm ready to be the best salesperson I can be.'"
John on why you need to be making calls: "Your job is to constantly be talking to somebody about trying to find where the opportunities are. And if you're just looking at your computer, they're not gonna be coming to you."

Now an entrepreneur, Jack recognizes the necessity of knowing how to sell in starting a business, even if you’ll be hiring sellers down the road.
HIGHLIGHTS
QUOTES
Jack on why all founders need to be adept sellers: "It doesn't matter what the business is. When you start something, if you're the founder, you have to be good at sales. Like Facebook. Zuckerberg. He had to sell that to some people at some point, right? To get people to buy in, to get some momentum and start gaining customers."
Jack's opinion on what would have made learning sales a little easier for him:"I had a lot of leash. I was just there, just freewheeling on my own. And I appreciated it and I still do. But I think if I had a little bit more marching orders and a little bit less free time to do whatever I wanted with, I think I would have been a little more [successful] early on."

You can still watch the news on tv the way you can still order fast food if you really want to, but not having them on your phone makes it easier for you to maintain control.
HIGHLIGHTS
QUOTES
John on why you should cut back on listening to the news: "The people that own these news stations, whether it's this one or that one. Somebody, some executive is in charge of the darn thing and they're feeding these folks stuff to say and trying to get our attention so they can sell ads and make money."

John on helping customers figure out what they want: "When people walk into your shop or they come by your website, they didn't do it accidentally. There's a reason. And our job as a salesperson is to very politely help them figure out what that reason is because they don't want to tell you for some reason. You got to really prod them a little bit to get it out of them."

John on creating passive income and why you need to start early: "Whatever you have extra beyond what you live on, instead of buying things that don't make you any money, try to put it in places that create this snowball to start to get to the point where maybe the 40 or 45 or the 50-year old you. Adam's number one tip for first-time job hunters:"Find something that you're passionate about. Find something that you believe in the cause because a big part of selling is transferring that certainty to your prospect."

By every stretch of the imagination, Donald Corry has had an interesting career. After graduating from The Citadel, he served as a military intelligence officer and upon completion of active duty, began to carve himself a career in enterprise sales with Blackbaud. After a few years, Donald decided to work as a financial advisor with Edward Jones. In this episode of the Noob School, Donald and John talk about key lessons learned during his sales career, and why after so many years, he’s still working on doing what he truly loves to do.
HIGHLIGHTS
QUOTES
Donald on why he doesn't do that many follow up calls anymore:"What I started to realize — I call it the ketchup call: 'Hey, just calling to catch up, see how you we're doing.' I realize that all it does is to elongate the process, I don't need to be their friend. If they got a problem, I can help."
Donald on the importance of knowing when to walk away: "That was the 'aha moment' for me in inside sales. It's your ability to say no. Because you're saving your time, you're saving a false forecast. There's another opportunity out there, you just got to go and find it."

In this episode of the Noob School podcast, John talks about taking the pressure of closing a deal off from a seller's back by thinking of it as a game of lottery. If you don’t win, just get more tickets. You don’t control whether or not a customer really needs your product or service, so make sure that pipeline is filled and flowing.
HIGHLIGHTS
QUOTES
John on selling like you’re just scratching a lottery ticket: "If you were given a lottery ticket, and said this is the lottery ticket for this particular sale, that means that even though the card is not scratched off yet, it's already predetermined if the customer is gonna buy or not. So why are we all getting weird about whether or not we're gonna get an order? It's either there or it's not there."

SHOW SUMMARY
In this episode of the Noob School podcast, our host John Sterling talks about the 3-Foot Rule and why you should practice talking to people, even if it can feel a bit awkward at first. The trick is to get used to doing it so that you’re prepared when an opportunity presents itself, three feet away from you.
HIGHLIGHTS
QUOTES
The 3-Foot Rule according to John: "If you come within three feet of somebody, you want to come up with some quick way to open. Say your name. Get their name. Ask them what they do. Tell them what you do, and the intention is twofold. One is, you want to find out what they're into, tell them what you're into. And quickly, I mean very quickly, figure out, ‘Is there something here where I could help you, or is there something there where you can help me?’"
On why you want to be practicing your conversational skills, according to John: "When you run across the right person that is in fact the million-dollar customer who does need your stuff, then you want to have your act together. You don't want to be stumbling and bumbling when you are talking to the right person."

Today’s sellers may have the fanciest tools and the best sales education that money can buy, but at the end of the day it’s about two things: consistency and a good plan. In this episode of the Noob School, Managing Partner of ACME Capital and Senior Lecturer in the College of Business at Clemson University, Matt Klein talks about his own sales journey and the many lessons he learned from it. From cold-calling to doing enterprise sales in Europe, Matt stands by being consistent in his efforts and carefullying detailing his path to ultimate success.
HIGHLIGHTS
QUOTES
Matthew on going the extra mile when networking:"You don't know who you're coming across so might as well through a total line out. Make them feel important, as you say. And then set the table right. Give them the experience they otherwise couldn't get or take them to a nice lunch. It's, what, 100 bucks on your side but what you get out of it is a relationship and a connection that you otherwise wouldn't get just trying to figure out on your own."
Matthew's recipe for cold-calling success:"It's just the consistency of doing it and having a plan. Walking in the office every morning, 8 am, having a plan and executing on it and knowing why you're calling. You're not just calling to say hi, or thanks. Sometimes I call and say, 'hey, I noticed you had a support issue. Maybe I can help you kind of push it up the queue?'"
Matthew on choosing where to get your MBA: "When you get your MBA, you really want to be the dumbest person in the room. I, for sure, was the dumbest person in the room. I was lucky to be there."

SHOW SUMMARY
In this episode of the Noob School podcast, our host John Sterling talks about the Rule of 5: you become the average of the five people you always hang out with. If your goals include being financially independent, having a successful career or business, and/or getting a steady passive income to fund your retirement, then you’ll want to spend more time with people who are also actively trying to go in the same direction. Does this mean you should go fire your high school buddies to find others? Not necessarily. But the more time you spend with like-minded people, the shorter the journey will be towards those goals.
HIGHLIGHTS
QUOTES
John on choosing which people to spend more time with: "You just need to understand that you have a choice on which way you lean. I'm not suggesting that you fire all your friends that aren't business leaders. Pick your people that you'd like to hangout with, that you think are going places that you'd like to go."
John on making your own decision, instead of being pulled by others:"It's your choice. If you don't make a choice, what typically happens is you just get pulled one way or another, and you typically get pulled the wrong way."
John's advice for spending time with others with intention: "Just another thing that you can do is to start putting these anchors on your schedule with the people that you want to hangout with. I don't think it's ever gonna be perfect, but you can influence a lot of it based on your choices and what you want to make happen."

HIGHLIGHTS
QUOTES
John on focusing on the here and now: "The past is now effectively gone. We're not worried about it. We are going to focus on today, and we're going to enjoy every piece of the day. Whatever it is we're doing, and I actually have this written down when I look at every morning — that today is the only day I have right now."

SHOW SUMMARY
This episode of Noob School with John Sterling features Bill Lee, Business Consultant at Lee Resources and author of Gross Margin and 30 Ways Managers Shoot Themselves In The Foot. Bill helped grow Builder's Mart from nothing to $678 million over the course of 19 years. He shares how testing sales teams with the Kolbe Index was a gamechanger and that the core of selling is relationship-building.
To get the business of their clients, not only did they have to match or beat the competition’s price but they had to convince clients that having a relationship with them is more advantageous than with their current suppliers. He also shares anecdotes on how listening is one of the most important skills sellers must have.
HIGHLIGHTS
QUOTES
Lessons from psychology that apply to sales Bill: "In interviewing people, in talking to people, you learn not to do all the talking. They call it the Rogerian Theory, and after that you just let them go. My theory is you want to listen to what people talk about because they talk about what's interesting to them, not what's interesting to me."
Create tangible results to get your prospect's business Bill: "Do something for your customer, do something for your prospect, do something that helps them solve their most pressing business problems, do something to help them make more money, and try to find out what those things are by asking questions, by getting to know their people, by touring their facility. And, once we did that, once we did tangible that they couldn't do for themselves, it opened the doors beautifully."
Do business with people you have relationships with Bill: "If there's one key to sales that doesn't have anything to do training necessarily, it's relationships. Who trusts you? Who knows you? Who believes in you? Who knows that you have great integrity? That's the kind of person you want to do business with and, no matter which company they work for, you tend to do business with them."
