In strength training, the role of hands and feet is often underestimated, yet they serve as critical foundations for stability and strength. By learning to engage and position these extremities properly, we create a kinetic chain that supports the entire body. When our hands and feet are actively involved in stabilizing and generating force, we distribute tension more effectively, leading to greater overall strength and improved balance. This enhanced stability allows movements to become more fluid and efficient, reducing the risk of injury and maximizing the benefits of each exercise. Ultimately, the key to unlocking full-body strength lies in understanding how to harness the power of your hands and feet.

How many out there reach for bodybuilding exercises to build up the body? Makes sense, right?!?! We also like to think that functional training is more aimed towards improving mobility & stability and should be kept in the warm-ups & cool downs of the program. However, what if you were told that functional training can help build muscle along with all the other benefits of mobility & stability? Too good to be true? Tune in and listen to Josh Henkin, creator of DVRT and The Ultimate Sandbag, explain how this is possible!
There is always that time in a workout where a decision needs to be made: Are we at that point where I need to move to the next level of an exercise? This exciting moment in your fitness journey comes with other questions, as well. For instance, should there be a change to the load in order to satisfy the more challenging level? What if you weren't as ready for that level as you thought you should be - do you go back to the previous level? Should you ever return to the beginning? These are all great questions and this week Cory is ready to provide the answers!
Maybe it's misplaced optimism, but based on what we are seeing & hearing from younger fitness professionals, as well as, seasoned fitness professionals at the most recent Perform Better 3-Day Functional Training Summit in Chicago, IL it feels that there is a movement happening in the fitness industry not to destroy our personal training clients, but to hear them and see them and honor their wishes and needs while still giving them a tremendous gym experience and help them move towards their fitness goals and much more!
In this episode you will discover the "whys" of what brought Allen to FLD over a year ago to help improve his health & well-being (even though he had been following us for years prior). Many of us begin our fitness journey as enthusiasts and that path leads us to consider exercising as a hobby and/or a lifestyle change. However, how many of us (even the professionals) consider fitness as a calling - more than just some job to do until you find something else that will support you, but an actual career that you dedicate and sacrifice for to improve yourself and those you are responsible for training? In this week's episode, Cory explains what it takes to truly answer this unique calling of being a fitness professional and how it isn't for everyone!
So what happens when you have such an amazing training system that supports clients' fitness goals when they're working with chronic pain, depression, anxiety, etc and you then have fitness clients that want to push the proverbial envelope and go beast mode in your gym? Do you have enough tools in your fitness toolbox to effectively train all intelligently? In this episode, Cory shares the secrets to our training sauce at Fitness Lying Down!
Here is the one million dollar question: are fitness professionals actually trying to help their clients, or are they trying to help themselves? With the large influence of social media, it can be easy to be tempted to offer fitness & exercise advice for audience engagement and social media net worth, rather than being concerned about those heeding that advice. There is quite the responsibility for the personal trainer to take care of the whole person and not just the physical parts that are brought to the gym! We are excited to bring back a good friend of the podcast, DVRT Ultimate Sandbag creator & CEO, Josh Henkin, to discuss how the fitness pro can remove the guesswork from program design and provide a more positive, corrective experience for the fitness client! A definite "must listen" for the fitness coaches and clients!
We have come a long way in the fitness industry as professionals, however we still fall short of the mark and can do so much better to support and nurture our leaders in the fitness world, as well as, the clients whom we serve. This week Cory spills some fitness tea on the effects from the scars of the past that continue to hinder our present, but can still be corrected to allow for a bright fitness future!

Megan has done a lot of digging and is about to drop tons of insight nuggets right into your lap!
Do you really know what happens during a menstrual cycle? Did you know that this cycle impacts training sessions and weight regulation? Functional strength training is something we really drive home when we are discussing everyday "real" people and their fitness. However, can this type of training benefit competitive athletes participating in their given sports? In today's fast-paced world, prioritizing our physical well-being is more important than ever. Exercise not only helps us stay fit and healthy but also contributes to our overall happiness and quality of life. Gyms offer a variety of options to cater to different fitness needs, from personal training for individualized guidance to group fitness classes for a sense of community and motivation.
However, these factors can also play a negative role for a person's well-being if they are following the "old ways" of traditional fitness and strength training. In this week's episode Cory offers a Declaration of Independence to break from the former thought process of exercise and liberate the gym goer.
Functional training like Dynamic Variable Resistance Training (DVRT) & Mindful movement practices like Myofascial Integrated Movement (MIM) emphasize the connection between the mind and body, promoting awareness, control, and functional movement patterns. By incorporating mindful movement into our exercise routines, we can enhance our physical performance, prevent injuries, and improve our overall well-being. Taking care of our bodies is a powerful way to honor the principles of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Make sure to listen to this exciting episode!
It's pretty easy to believe when knee pain arrives that there has to be something wrong with the muscles surrounding the joint. When fitness professionals and clinicians alike can start looking at the big picture of human movement and interconnectedness, we can create better strategies and solutions to help our clients/patients decrease their knee pain!

Before you start pointing out the spelling error in the title, you have to listen to this podcast episode with Cory sitting down and talking fitness, massage therapy, and all things DVRT with owner of Quinntessential Fitness, Mimi Quinn! Mimi has a great story to share about how fitness motivated her from moving out of a corporate job that she enjoyed to being an owner of a very successful gym that started out of her garage in 2020!
If you ask enough questions, the reason people currently spend time with resistance training and exercising is for longevity. Sure, we enjoy the short-term benefits of fitness, but we are looking for a long-term return on that investment. This week you get to hear Cory explain how we certainly offer short-term benefits with DVRT and MIM that also allow for our clients to play the long game of fitness as they grow strong & age gracefully.
If you have been listening to us for anytime now, you won't be surprised to hear how everything is connected. However, what actually connects everything in our body and how? Connective tissue isn't just ligaments & tendons like we once thought. Can you imagine that your organs are actually connected to your muscular system and if you're having a problem with your GI this could impact how you move?!?! We're excited to have a good friend of the program, Josh Henkin, join us and help unpack this connective tissue and the best way to train and maintain for a better moving & feeling you!

Am I getting enough? Are all calories equal? Find all these answers and more in a jam-packed episode you won’t want to miss!
We all know about HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) and other forms of intense strength training workouts and their benefits. However, is there a place in the gym for a slower method of physical fitness training? Could we improve our fitness levels and even our other systems of training by including a more mindful approach to exercise? In this episode Cory explains how we at FLD are creating a balance for our clients to help them reach their fitness goals by sustainable means. Plus, Cory might have an "old man" trainer moment where he criticizes his fitness peers for some shameful acts through social media!

In 2023 DVRT dropped a bomb with the Myofascial Integrated Movement program (aka MIM). It turned lots of heads and drew some criticism because it was breaking from what many understood to be functional strength training with Ultimate Sandbags, kettlebells, resistance bands, etc. But is MIM all that different from the philosophy of DVRT? In this week's episode Cory chats with the man responsible for the MIM nuke, Josh Henkin, and asks him many of the questions that he has, that he's heard from from other DVRT and fitness professionals, as well as clients at FLD who are being introduced to this bodyweight approach to movement & fitness. You do not want to miss the details that Josh lays out regarding MIM from it's origin to it's future in DVRT!

In the beginning of Fitness Lying Down, we'd hear questions about why we don't have any mirrors in the gym. Let's be honest, it's pretty standard in gyms to have mirrors, but for what? Listen as Cory breaks down our mirror non-issues at FLD. And, brace yourselves, you're about to hear the answers Cory provides for the Cup Of Joe Meeting hosted by WWBIC (Wisconsin Women's Business Initiative Corporation) at FLD this week. It's been an amazing journey these past nine years navigating through employment termination, business dreams, financing gymnastics, impressive growth, business partner break-up, COVID-19, and more business dreams to where this humble gym in the middle of nowhere Wisconsin has succeeded past many other's expectations! Cory shares the ups & downs of being a fitness business owner and what he's relied on for almost a decade to keep his sanity and life balance. Great episode to enjoy whether you're a FLD client, fitness enthusiast, small business owner, or just curious!
You see so much exercises and fitness tips from social media "influencers," but how do you know if it's legit. Are the workouts you find on YouTube ones that you should actually do for yourself? Are there protocol & standards in the fitness industry for a personal trainer in order to prescribe and encourage particular exercises. Or is it just a free for all? This week we dedicate time and go over how fitness could be better and more acknowledged as credible to help people and their physical needs. Also, what does it take to own a gym and set yourself apart by exclusively using the DVRT system - can anyone do it? Plus, have you heard about how important your hands and feet are when exercising? It could be a game changer in helping with your fitness needs and goals!
Do you like to get yelled at while on the fitness floor as means of “motivation?” Are you satisfied walking into a gym for your first session with the bar set at an unrealistic, ridiculous level? We in the fitness industry can do a better job creating an environment that provides success while you work towards your fitness & health goals in a safe and sustainable way! This week we have three distinct pleasure of hearing from Josh Henkin, CEO and creator of DVRT Ultimate Sandbag Training, to help us break down where in the industry we can improve not only for our clients, but also for those with boots on the ground working in the trenches. A very high energy episode with lots of takeaways if you are a fitness pro or enthusiast - this episode is for you!
Of all the milestones we've accomplished, for some reason this milestone in 2023 seems to be a pretty important one this year (especially as a small town gym) as Cory reflects on how Fitness Lying Down became the gym it has grown to be up to the time 2020 and how we were able to navigate through the craziness of the coronavirus with lockdowns, mask mandates, and more! Lots of success that depended on so much more than the action steps taken during the uncertainties of the time. Listen to this episode for a behind the scenes on our handling of the pandemic.

Do women bulk up as a result of strength training? Can you lose your belly fat by doing ab crunches? Is squatting bad for your knees? These are some popular fitness myths that we can all say haven't really carried their weight. In this week's episode Cory and DVRT creator, Josh Henkin, go through some other fitness myths that have resurfaced on social media to explain why they aren't as true as the influences would have you believe. You might be surprised to hear what is discussed from topics including: stability training, reasons for tight muscles, bodybuilding with functional training, & more!
Anyone who has dabbled with "functional" fitness has at least heard of the Turkish Get-Up (TGU), if not practiced it. There is no doubt how the TGU can be really relevant to your training goals and strength outside the four walls of your gym. This practical exercise taking you from the ground on your back to standing on both feet required your body to move with precision and purpose while you navigate through gravity, mastering every body position along the way. Great experience for anyone looking for a challenge, but find out a few more details from Cory (the birthday boy) on how to make this popular exercise a little bit more efficient in your training space!
When lunges aren't a good option for you, or your clients, what is the solution to offer that provides the benefits of the lunge without actually having to lunge? In this episode Cory takes great care to explain how this certain exercise can be used for clients' success in the gym when traditional lunges might fail. Plus, how to coach a very traditional gym exercise to make it a better experience for those who might be troubled with shoulder pain/problems - getting the muscles to do their job and not some other body part's job! Great show for you to improve problem solving on the training floor - make sure to listen and invite your friends to join in on the FLD Podcast!
Could the squat exercise be the king of all leg exercises? Is there an exercise out there that can match the amount of muscle recruitment and carry over the squat has to everyday life? You'd be surprised to hear a common fitness myth that Josh Henkin of DVRT is all too eager to debunk for you! If you like to squat - you will want to tune in this week. If you don't like to squat - you will definitely want to listen to this week's episode with our guest who knows a thing, or two, about building a better squat exercise!

Providing an internship to hungry, young coaches is a great way to start! Cory, this week, shares about the internship program at Fitness Lying Down and how we are trying to turn out problem solvers and not just the stereotypical trainer that is more concerned with their social medial following than improving the paying clients they serve on the training floor! Listen to this and more in this action packed episode! And an apology in advance for the hoarseness of Cory's voice :0

As fitness professionals we get tripped up with functional training and how that looks in a strength training program. FLD owner, Cory Cripe, shares his experience moving from "old school" strength training programming through his time with the Chicago Bulls' strength & conditioning staff to where he is now. A great episode to find out how functional training can be fun, effective, and productive!
Do you remember the days when you'd tweak something or become injured and were told to "take a week off" from exercise to heal? In this week's episode Cory is ready to explain why that is more myth than fact and why you should do everything to not skip your strength training days - even when not 100%. Also, in last week's episode with Shannon we failed to unpack what consists of her functional training and what exactly we do for exercises, load, and volume to help her with her fitness goals of maximizing her strength. This information will help you wherever you are on your fitness journey!
When it comes to strength training at Fitness Lying Down using the DVRT (Dynamic Variable Resistance Training) principles, we get a lot of questions like, 'Can you really build strength with sandbags?' 'Can you really build bigger muscles with functional training?' And so on. Our guest this week wants to share with you how she has been on a journey for over 20 months to build real world strength & muscle through functional training and learning how to nourish to flourish with the help of Megan the Trainer RD to be successful with her fitness goals! A truly great story shared by one of our very own sandbaggers!

The Functional Movement System (FMS) rocked the fitness industry a few decades ago with their introduction to the Functional Movement Screen and the power behind its uses in a clinical & fitness setting.
