Who is God? - The Fact
The fact of Godâs existence is so conspicuous, both through creation and through manâs conscience, that the Bible calls the atheist a âfoolâ (Psalm 14:1). Accordingly, the Bible never attempts to prove the existence of God; rather, it assumes His existence from the very beginning (Genesis 1:1). What the Bible does is reveal the nature, character, and work of God.
Who is God? - The Definition
Thinking correctly about God is of utmost importance because a false idea about God is idolatry. In Psalm 50:21, God reproves the wicked man with this accusation: âYou thought I was altogether like you.â To start with, a good summary definition of God is âthe Supreme Being; the Creator and Ruler of all that is; the Self-existent One who is perfect in power, goodness, and wisdom.â
Who is God? - His Nature
We know certain things to be true of God for one reason: in His mercy He has condescended to reveal some of His qualities to us. God is spirit, by nature intangible (John 4:24). God is One, but He exists as three PersonsâGod the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit (Matthew 3:16-17). God is infinite (1 Timothy 1:17), incomparable (2 Samuel 7:22), and unchanging (Malachi 3:6). God exists everywhere (Psalm 139:7-12), knows everything (Psalm 147:5; Isaiah 40:28), and has all power and authority (Ephesians 1; Revelation 19:6).
Who is God? - His Character
Here are some of Godâs characteristics as revealed in the Bible: God is just (Acts 17:31), loving (Ephesians 2:4-5), truthful (John 14:6), and holy (1 John 1:5). God shows compassion (2 Corinthians 1:3), mercy (Romans 9:15), and grace (Romans 5:17). God judges sin (Psalm 5:5) but also offers forgiveness (Psalm 130:4).
Who is God? - His Work
We cannot understand God apart from His works, because what God does flows from who He is. Here is an abbreviated list of Godâs works, past, present, and future: God created the world (Genesis 1:1; Isaiah 42:5); He actively sustains the world (Colossians 1:17); He is executing His eternal plan (Ephesians 1:11) which involves the redemption of man from the curse of sin and death (Galatians 3:13-14); He draws people to Christ (John 6:44); He disciplines His children (Hebrews 12:6); and He will judge the world (Revelation 20:11-15).
Who is God? - A Relationship with Him
In the Person of the Son, God became incarnate (John 1:14). The Son of God became the Son of Man and is therefore the âbridgeâ between God and man (John 14:6; 1 Timothy 2:5). It is only through the Son that we can have forgiveness of sins (Ephesians 1:7), reconciliation with God (John 15:15; Romans 5:10), and eternal salvation (2 Timothy 2:10). In Jesus Christ âall the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily formâ (Colossians 2:9). So, to really know who God is, all we have to do is look at Jesus.
None of this should be a cause for concern regarding the trustworthiness of the gospels. None of the gospels claim to be comprehensive biographies, and in fact they are quite short given the amount of time they cover. The gospel writers were selective in their material. They give us a full understanding of who Jesus is, what He taught, and His significance for us today, but they do not give us a very good understanding of the order in which Jesus did things. That was not their purpose.
There are a number of New Testament reading plans that have the gospels intertwined âchronologicallyââin the opinion of the editor of the plan. However, other editors might arrange the events in a different order.
Having said that, there are a few events that can be placed within a broad framework:
John starts with the pre-existent Jesus in 1:1â3.
Luke speaks of the birth of Christ in Bethlehem and the visit of the shepherds that very night (chapter 2).
Matthew 2 speaks of the visit of the wise men to the infant Jesus in Bethlehem. We assume that this visit was at a later time than the shepherdsâ because, by the time they arrived, Mary and Joseph were living in a house. Matthew...
The Bible tells us that God reveals Himself to humans in four primary ways. All that God has created in nature discloses who He is. Our consciences (the human mind and heart) bear witness to the existence of God. He reveals Himself to us through His Word and the person of Jesus Christ. The first two ways that God reveals Himself to us are general and limited. But the second two avenues of revelation are personal, full, and complete.
Creation Reveals God
Paul said in Romans 1:19â20 that, ever since the creation of the world, God has made the knowledge of Himself evident to all people: âThey know the truth about God because he has made it obvious to them. For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualitiesâhis eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing Godâ (NLT).
Humans can take in the beauty and splendor all around and recognize that these created things testify to the existence of God, who is the all-powerful maker of the universe. According to Paul, God has provided sufficient insight into His eternal power and divine attributes through creation so that no one can be excused for missing His existence.
Psalm 19:1â4 declares, âThe heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make him known. They speak without a sound or word; their voice is never heard. Yet their message has gone throughout the earth, and their words to all the worldâ (NLT).
Scripture also seems to indicate that the revelation of God in creation is only a tiny glimpseâa small whisperâof who He is and how He wants to be known by humans: âHe binds up the waters in his thick clouds, and the cloud is not split open under them. He covers the face of the full moon and spreads over it his cloud. Behold, these are but the outskirts of his ways, and how small a whisper do we hear of him! But the thunder of his power who can understand?â (Job 26:8â9,14, ESV).
Written on Our Hearts
The Bible says that God has revealed His existence to humans in their consciences by impressing His law on their hearts even before they hear the gospel message: âEven Gentiles, who do not have Godâs written law, show that they know his law when they instinctively obey it, even without having heard it. They demonstrate that Godâs law is written in their hearts, for their own conscience and thoughts either accuse them or tell them they are doing rightâ (Romans 2:14â15, NLT).
According to Ecclesiastes 3:11, within the heart of every person God has planted a longing to know Him: âYet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of Godâs work from beginning to endâ (NLT).
Godâs purpose for placing this yearning in the human heart is so that we might have a living, personal relationship with Him. The apostle Paul spoke of this internal revelation to the pagan crowds of people in Athens: âHis purpose was for the nations to seek after God and perhaps feel their way toward him and find himâthough he is not far from any one of usâ (Acts 17:27, NLT).
Through the Person of Jesus Christ
God has revealed Himself to us with the most clarity and detail in the person of Jesus Christ. He is the living, breathing, flesh-and-blood, human presentation of God: âThe Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truthâ (John 1:14).
Speaking of Jesus, John writes in his gospel: âNo one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is himself God, is near to the Fatherâs heart. He has revealed God to usâ (John 1:18, NLT). Paul told the Colossians, âChrist is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creationâ (Colossians 1:15, NLT). And Jesus said to Philip, âHave I been with you all this time, Philip, and yet you still donât know who I am? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father!â (John 14:9, NLT).
The signs and wonders Jesus performed revealed the glory and power of God. The way He lived, the miracles He performed, and His teachings and parables all demonstrated how much the Father cares for us. The way to know the Father and have a relationship with Him is to know the Son, who is the fullness of Godâs revelation of Himself (Galatians 4:4â5; Hebrews 1:1â2).
Through the Word of God
One of the greatest ways we get to know the person of Jesus is through the Word of God. The Bible is Godâs revelation of Himself and His purposes throughout history. Jesus Himself taught that the Scriptures reveal who He is (Luke 24:27, 44â45; John 5:39).
The Bible presents us with eyewitness testimony of the revelation of God in Jesus Christ: âFor we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. . . . We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain. We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your heartsâ (2 Peter 1:16â19).
From Genesis to Revelation, Scripture is Godâs revelation of Himself for all to read and understand.
Many people can acknowledge the fact that there is a God. But God wants us to know Him intimatelyâto spend all eternity in close fellowship with Him.

Malachi 1:2-3 declares, ââI have loved you,ââ says the LORD. But you ask, âHow have you loved us?â âWas not Esau Jacobâs brother?â the LORD says. âYet I have loved Jacob, but Esau I have hated, and I have turned his mountains into a wasteland and left his inheritance to the desert jackals.ââ Malachi 1:3 is quoted in Romans 9:10-13, âNot only that, but Rebekahâs children had one and the same father, our father Isaac. Yet, before the twins were born or had done anything good or badâin order that Godâs purpose in election might stand: not by works but by him who callsâshe was told, âThe older will serve the younger.â Just as it is written: âJacob I loved, but Esau I hated.ââ Why did God love Jacob and hate Esau? If God is love (1 John 4:8), how could He hate anyone?
When studying the Bible, it is critically important to always study the context of a particular Bible verse or passage. In these instances, the prophet Malachi and the apostle Paul are using the name âEsauâ to refer to the Edomites, who were the descendants of Esau. Isaac and Rebekah had two sons, Esau and Jacob. God chose Jacob (whom He later renamed âIsraelâ) to be the father of His chosen people, the Israelites. God rejected Esau (who was also called âEdomâ) and did not choose him to be the father of His chosen people. Esau and his descendants, the Edomites, were in many ways blessed by God (Genesis 33:9; Genesis chapter 36).
So, considering the context, God loving Jacob and hating Esau has nothing to do with the human emotions of love and hate. It has everything to do with God choosing one man and his descendants and rejecting another man and his descendants. God chose Abraham out of all the men in the world. The Bible very well could say, âAbraham I loved, and every other man I hated.â God chose Abrahamâs son Isaac instead of Abrahamâs son Ishmael. The Bible very well could say, âIsaac I loved, and Ishmael I hated.â Romans chapter 9 makes it abundantly clear that loving Jacob and hating Esau was entirely related to which of them God chose. Hundreds of years after Jacob and Esau had died, the Israelites and Edomites became bitter enemies. The Edomites often aided Israelâs enemies in attacks on Israel. Esauâs descendants brought Godâs curse upon themselves. Genesis 27:29 tells Israel, âMay nations serve you and peoples bow down to you. Be lord over your brothers, and may the sons of your mother bow down to you. May those who curse you be cursed and those who bless you be blessed.â

The pages of the Bible reveal a detailed portrait of the character of God. Perhaps the most outstanding feature of Godâs character is that He is a loving Father to all believers (Ephesians 1:2; Galatians 1:1; Colossians 1:12; 1 Thessalonians 1:3).
God, by His nature, is wholly good (Mark 10:18; 1 Timothy 4:4). His goodness is unmatched, and because of it, we can trust in Him: âThe LORD is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in himâ (Nahum 1:7; see also Exodus 33:19; Psalm 25:8; 34:8; Matthew 19:17; 2 Peter 1:3). In His goodness, God always has our best interests at heart: âWe know that all things work together for the good of those who love God, who are called according to his purposeâ (Romans 8:28, CSB; see also Genesis 50:20; Jeremiah 29:11; Lamentations 3:25). Everything God does is an expression of His goodness and designed to benefit His people.
Godâs holiness is unequaled: âThere is no one holy like the LORD; there is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our Godâ (1 Samuel 2:2; see also Leviticus 11:44â45; 19:2; Isaiah 6:3; 43:15; 1 Peter 1:15â16; Revelation 4:8). There is no stain of evil or impurity in God: âGod is light; in him there is no darkness at allâ (1 John 1:5; see also Psalm 12:6; 19:8).
Another defining characteristic of God is His righteousness, meaning He exists in a state of moral perfection: âGod presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his bloodâto be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunishedâhe did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesusâ (Romans 3:25â26; see also 2 Chronicles 12:6; Psalm 33:5; Isaiah 45:21).
God is also just; He is perfectly upright and fair in how he treats His creation: âYet the LORD longs to be gracious to you; therefore he will rise up to show you compassion. For the LORD is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him!â (Isaiah 30:18; see also Deuteronomy 32:4; Zephaniah 3:5; Acts 17:31; Revelation 16:5â6).
Loving, compassionate, gracious, kind, and merciful are all central descriptions of the character of God (Nehemiah 9:31). So kindhearted and caring is He that Scripture says, âGod is loveâ (1 John 4:8, 16). The psalmist describes God as âcompassionate and graciousâ and âabounding in love and faithfulnessâ (Psalm 86:15). So great is Godâs love for us âthat he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal lifeâ (John 3:16; see also 1 John 4:9â10). Because of His great love, Christ died for us, even while we were still sinners (Romans 5:8; see also Titus 3:4â5). Godâs mercy and compassion never fail; they are renewed continuously toward us day in and day out (Lamentations 3:22â23).
Part of Godâs character is faithfulness: âGod is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lordâ (1 Corinthians 1:9; see also Isaiah 49:7 1 Thessalonians 5:24). In our struggles and failures, God is faithful to forgive us when we confess our sin and return to Him: âIf we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousnessâ (1 John 1:9). In times when we stumble and fall, it is immensely encouraging to know that God will never abandon us. Even when we are utterly unfaithful, God remains faithful and true because that is who He is; it is Godâs character to be faithful (2 Timothy 2:13; see also Revelation 19:11).
God is truthful, and His Word is true: âWe know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal lifeâ (1 John 5:20; see also John 17:17). God and His Word form a trustworthy foundation for life (Psalm 12:6; 26:3; 33:4; 43:3; 86:11). In Him is no falsehood, lies, or deception (Numbers 23:19; Isaiah 45:19; Romans 1:25; Hebrews 6:18). What God says is absolutely reliable (Jeremiah 10:10). His Word is consistent with His character and His revelation of Himself (John 7:28; 8:26). Because of Godâs character, we can count on Him to fulfill His promises (Psalm 31:5).
Patience and longsuffering are attributes of Godâs character. He is âslow to anger,â dealing patiently with rebellious sinners (Exodus 34:6; Numbers 14:18; Psalm 86:15;). God was patient in delaying the flood in Noahâs time while the ark was under construction, giving sinners plenty of time for repentance (1 Peter 3:20). Likewise, the prolonging of Christâs return is not an indication of slowness or hesitation on Godâs part, but of His longsuffering, as He does not want anyone to die without the opportunity to repent, be saved, and enter into His family (2 Peter 3:9â10). At the heart of Godâs character is His desire to be a Father to all who draw near to Him (Psalm 68:5; 103:13; Isaiah 63:16; 64:8; Ephesians 4:6; 1 John 3:1).
The more deeply we dig into the Scriptures, the more we will uncover new and beautiful facets to the character of God. And the longer we spend time with Him and in His Word, the better we will know and understand His nature. We will discover that God never changes (Malachi 3:6; James 1:17), that He is all-knowing, all-powerful, and always present everywhere (Psalm 139:7â10; Hebrews 4:13). He is perfect (Matthew 5:48), and He is three in one. We can spend a lifetime seeking after Him and still only scratch the surface of comprehending the depth of our heavenly Fatherâs character.

No, God does not have a wife or consort. Some historians have attempted to support the position that the God of the Bible had a wife, and that the Old Testament was redacted to omit the idea, but the truth is there is no evidence to support such a stance. The most common assertion is that God and Asherah (a mother goddess found in ancient Semitic religions) were originally a couple in the religion of Israel, but, as time passed, Asherah was removed as Godâs companion.
In looking at the Old Testament manuscripts, we find absolutely no evidence of manipulation that would delete Asherah as Godâs wife; however, we do find plenty of evidence showing the oppositeâthat the God of the Bible never had a wife and never needed a wife. The Bible clearly presents marriage as something temporarily instituted by God for humankind alone.
The origins of marriage are found in Genesis 2: âThe LORD God said, âIt is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for himââ (verse 18). From man, God formed woman as his mate and instituted marriage as the physical and spiritual union between husband and wife.
Unlike man, God has never been alone. Because God is a triune being consisting of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, He already has union with Himself and has always existed in a loving relationship. Therefore, there is no need for God to have a wife or companion.
Further, there is biblical evidence that speaks to the fact that, in the eternal state, marriage will become obsolete. When Jesus answered a hypothetical question from the Sadducees about marriage in the next life, Jesus said, âAt the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriageâ (Matthew 22:30).
The pagan religions often portrayed their false gods as having wives, consorts, and love interests, but the One True God is unlike the âworthless idolsâ of paganism (see Jeremiah 2:11). There is no evidence to suggest that the God of the Bible has ever been portrayed as having a wife, and, moreover, the Scriptures demonstrate why God has no need of marriage and that marriage itself is something designed by God for human beings in this life alone.

It is important to understand how the word âjealousâ is used. Its use in Exodus 20:5 to describe God is different from how it is used to describe the sin of jealousy (Galatians 5:20). When we use the word âjealous,â we use it in the sense of being envious of someone who has something we do not have. A person might be jealous or envious of another person because he or she has a nice car or home (possessions). Or a person might be jealous or envious of another person because of some ability or skill that other person has (such as athletic ability). Another example would be that one person might be jealous or envious of another because of his or her beauty.
In Exodus 20:5, it is not that God is jealous or envious because someone has something He wants or needs. Exodus 20:4-5 says, âYou shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God...â Notice that God is jealous when someone gives to another something that rightly belongs to Him.
In these verses, God is speaking of people making idols and bowing down and worshiping those idols instead of giving God the worship that belongs to Him alone. God is possessive of the worship and service that belong to Him. It is a sin (as God points out in this commandment) to worship or serve anything other than God. It is a sin when we desire, or we are envious, or we are jealous of someone because he has something that we do not have. It is a different use of the word âjealousâ when God says He is jealous. What He is jealous of belongs to Him; worship and service belong to Him alone, and are to be given to Him alone.
Perhaps a practical example will help us understand the difference. If a husband sees another man flirting with his wife, he is right to be jealous, for only he has the right to flirt with his wife. This type of jealousy is not sinful. Rather, it is entirely appropriate. Being jealous for something that God declares to belong to you is good and appropriate. Jealousy is a sin when it is a desire for something that does not belong to you. Worship, praise, honor, and adoration belong to God alone, for only He is truly worthy of it. Therefore, God is rightly jealous when worship, praise, honor, or adoration is given to idols. This is precisely the jealousy the apostle Paul described in 2 Corinthians 11:2, âI am jealous for you with a godly jealousy...â
