Tea & Contemplation is a podcast + practice space for exploring our inner world, through the lens of tea and yogic philosophy.
June 2022 update: This series is now retired in weekly format, after running for over a year and a half, but we're leaving these lovely archive sessions up for your enjoyment. For future new podcasts and projects with tea meditation, subscribe to Being Tea's newsletter, available at https://beingtea.com/
Every episode begins with a real time guided meditation with tea, followed by discussion on this month's themed topic of exploration. Your hosts are artist, writer and yoga teacher, Adam Grossi, and tea educator and founder of Being Tea, Suzette Hammond. This podcast is for anyone who is curious about meditation and is craving quiet thinking time and space to process emotions.
NOTES FOR PREPARING THE TEA:
We use the bowl method, a versatile and very accessible traditional method for enjoying tea, for every session.
Just a pinch of loose leaf tea + hot water in an open mug or small bowl with no strainer necessary. (This appears on the podcast cover art.)
We brew tea together during the session in real time, so simply just have your kettle heating just before you come sit down for practice and you’ll be all set.
Hello dear listeners, Today we have a short program update to share with you, regarding a hiatus for Tea & Contemplation. Adam is on a medical leave, which is explained further in the episode. Our theme for the month of March is "CLEARING." Given the deep weight the world is carrying at the moment, it feels like an appropriate place to pause and just consider how we practice peace within ourselves. How we deescalate from within. How we clear and make space for listening, restoration, grieving. So, we'll be spending March contemplating the practice of clearing with our tea and with our inner quiet. Come sit with us and be in community. We're back after a little spring break last week! And today, our monthly guest, jess young chang, joins us to lead a contemplation about clearing as both a form of letting go (a verb) and also a space (a noun). jess is currently pursuing her Master's at Harvard Divinity School, with a focus on the nature of the body and the Divine in both Tantric and Christian traditions. She is also a yoga teacher, as well as women's health advocate, from Chicago, IL. You can reach Jess at http://www.adevotedyogi.com/ (http://www.adevotedyogi.com/).

Our theme for February in Tea & Contemplation is "Deep Listening." Winter is a very inward, reflective time of year, and perhaps a time where we are extra prone to absorbing excessive messages. Whether they originate internally from our own insecurities, or externally because we're just living in a period of nearly debilitating intake of everything, all the time. This month, Adam and I sit with how to filter and tune out the noise, learning to tend to this inner monologue as a garden - one that needs frequent, attentive weeding.
Today's session is one for sitting with what we're hearing, even in our most painful moments, while honoring the call of our own sovereignty. (the recording of this session takes place as news of the invasion of Ukraine is breaking.)
We invite back into our space our friend and regular guest host, https://www.instagram.com/jessyoungchang/ (jess young chang), to lead our contemplation. jess is currently pursuing her Master's at Harvard Divinity School, with a focus on the nature of the body and the Divine in both Tantric and Christian traditions. Our theme for February in Tea & Contemplation is "Deep Listening." Winter is traditionally held as the season when our ears are at their greatest sensitivity, as our other senses are resting in the absence of normal seasonal stimulation. It's also of course a very inward, reflective time of year, and perhaps a time where we are extra prone to absorbing unhelpful messages. Whether they originate internally from our own insecurities, or externally because we're just living in a period of debilitating noise. This month, Adam and I sit with how to filter and tune out the noise, learning to tend to this inner monologue as a garden - one that needs frequent, attentive weeding. In today's session, we talk about accessing that deep listening through physical practice, and how we handle and sit with what we encounter in that space.

Our January theme is "Making a Place." Covid continues to impose intense restrictions on our ability to travel and to commune with the world outside of our homes. For many of us, it is a time of confinement, of being stuck in place. Psychologist and Holocaust survivor Victor Frankl posited that, “Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” Today, we close this series with a contemplation on what home means - to come home, to be of a place. And what it means to gain and lose places and homes, too.
This week's practice features our regular guest and dear friend here in the tea space, jessica young chang. Jess is currently pursuing her Master's at Harvard Divinity School, with a focus on the nature of the body and the Divine in both Tantric and Christian traditions. She is also a yoga teacher, as well as women's health advocate, from Chicago, IL. You can reach Jess at http://www.adevotedyogi.com/ (http://www.adevotedyogi.com/) or on IG @jessyoungchang.

In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” This month in Tea & Contemplation, we respond to isolation by invoking the power and magic of PLACE. What does it mean to be of a place? And how might we find nourishment in the art of placing, arranging, and intentional configuration?
Today's subject is how we care for the items and conditions of our space, and how this care itself is a way of understanding our own needs, to be seen, to be appreciated, and to live in wholeheartedness. Our intention in this series is to situate ourselves anew: to recognize the possibility inherent in our surroundings, and this most sacred place we call the body. We hope you enjoy!

This is not the cleaning-house approach of Marie Kondo; we’ll be embracing the clutter and the mud, the messiness of living in a home where everything is happening, often all at once. We’ll practice honoring and naming the parts of our space that do feel confining to us, when we feel trapped, and how we might make peace with those feelings. Our intention is to situate ourselves anew: to recognize the possibility inherent in our surroundings, and this most sacred place we call the body.

Our December theme is DARKNESS. In a culture obsessed with light, darkness is burdened with our abundant fears and hostilities. If we are to integrate, to ground into the fullness of who we really are, we must release our projections and step into the dark. The unseen. The unknown, and the unknowable. The shadow, and the veil. Darkness, the ground from which we all emerge. In honor of our theme, there are no weekly subjects this month. We cannot see the path ahead; we'll make it as we go. We encourage you to practice each session in darkness / by candlelight, too, if possible (even if just turning off one overhead light).

Our November theme is Dismantling Discipline. We are in a time when people are trying SO hard, all the time, and it never seems to be enough. And this conflict gets refracted and twisted around in our practice spaces, too - an area in our life where acceptance, curiosity, and nurturing are supposed to be the guiding principles. Not rigidity. So what can we do? Can we move away from dominance and more toward dedication? Let's sit with tea and our breathing, and talk together. This week's session: "What do you want to do? Centering Pleasure" Our cultural conditioning often paints pleasure and discipline as contrasting forces. But what if they are actually best suited to complement and support each other?
Tea & Contemplation is hosted by Suzette (‘Sooz’) Hammond - tea educator, tea contemplative practitioner, and founder of Being Tea - and Adam Grossi - artist, writer and yoga teacher –both based in Chicago, IL. You can connect with Adam on IG @adamgrossi and Sooz on IG @beingtea.

A tale of two paths. There is pushing yourself do something: a reflection of willpower. And there is surrendering to the flow of inspiration: evidence of spiritual integration. Our September theme is Nourishing Energy. Our sense of energy is so dynamic. At times we may feel full of a zest for life, brimming with vitality, and at other times we might find that, despite eating well and getting plenty of sleep, we can't seem to escape a feeling of depletion and exhaustion. This is especially common heading into the autumn season, when many routines and schedules shift all over again. Clearly, energy is a complex field, and in this month's sessions, we'll explore how we can navigate it skillfully. This week's session : "Can you share?" Do we have the capacity to offer nourishment to others? And if we do, how might we go about fostering each other's energetic nourishment? This week's practice features the return our regular guest and dear friend here in the tea space, http://www.adevotedyogi.com/about-jess (Jessica Young Chang). It sometimes feels as though our present experience is the inevitable result of circumstances, but the truth may be more slippery. A popular way of expressing this in contemplative practice is the analogy of seeds - the seeds that we nourish within ourselves. What role are we playing in what is arising within us? What do we choose to harvest and fill ourselves with?

Our heart-minds are capable of holding a seemingly infinite array of subjects, feelings, and thoughts. What responsibility do we have to ourselves to edit, streamline, and focus our attention? Within the field of our awareness, what are we holding close, what are growing, and what needs to be released?

An unknowable force, beyond our control? Probably. But, our relationship to it is something that we can assess, tweak, and notice tangible results. Let's talk about how we build energy and draw nourishment into our being.

Our August theme is Burnout. Burnout is nearly a social universal now. We all get what it means on a visceral level. However... Rather than glorifying it like we praise "busy" as a badge of honor, what if we did something about it? What can we actually do to acknowledge, speak our truth, and be kind to ourselves right now? Can we be self-compassionate together? Where in our life, no matter how small of an area, can we choose to step away for our own mental and physical well-being? This week's session : "What should rest feel like?" Today, we sit with how does the body know when we're truly resting, easing our burnout and overwhelm?

After a summer break in July, Tea & Contemplation is back! Our August theme is Burnout. Burnout is nearly a social universal now. We all get what it means on a visceral level. However... This week's session : "Acknowledging to Self." Often the hardest step of the exploration of burnout is calling it by name, recognizing when the signs are seeping in. Perhaps because calling it by name makes it more real.

Our June theme is Keeping Time. A rather strange sensation to arise during 2020 / 2021 (strange in that it feels somehow comforting that so many people are experiencing this feeling) is our changing awareness of time. How we are feeling the concept of “time” in often radically different ways now than we previously understood it. This month is about exploring our relationship to time through various lenses, such as its elastic nature (“too much” or “too little”), the feeling that we are left behind or out of sync, and how we listen to the insight of slow. This week's session : A common observation during the pandemic has been folks reporting a feeling of "lost" time. The awareness of days or weeks becomes totally blurred of meaning. As we emerge in contentious stop-start patterns from this period, a similar sensation - being left behind - is also taking root. Most notably for people who, for various circumstances, are not able to be in the same rhythm of time as people around them. And so we end our exploration this week with "Lost Time / Left Behind."

This week's session : This week is "The Elasticity of Time" - how we have the ability to shift our perception of how we feel about time in any moment. We can do this consciously/willingly, such as allowing enjoyable moments to linger or unpleasant moments to go faster. We may also do this unconsciously or even as a response to a traumatic situation. Knowing this very human perceptual quality that we all have when it comes to time, how does this alter your beliefs about the boundaries of time in your day?

Our May theme is How Much Do You Need? Reflections on the nature of practice, including how we choose methods that serve us, how we deal with distractions, and how we show up honestly for ourselves. Lineage traditions and modern expressions all meet in the sea of possibility, and teachers of all approaches are a click away these days. Ultimately, practice is activated by intention. So: where are we headed, and how are we resourcing ourselves for the journey? This week's session : Our final session this month gets into "Pretense & Honesty." Sometimes what we do can feel performative, to meet some unsaid standard of expectation or correction, and answering questions of "For whom?" or "For what?" is complicated. How do we create space for honesty with ourselves, that removes pretense and allows for meaningful, personal experience?

Our May theme is How Much? Reflections on the nature of practice, including how we choose methods that serve us, how we deal with distractions, and how we show up honestly for ourselves. Lineage traditions and modern expressions all meet in the sea of possibility, and teachers of all approaches are a click away these days. Ultimately, practice is activated by intention. So: where are we headed, and how are we resourcing ourselves for the journey? This week's session : "Depth & Breadth." How deep into a practice do we really need to go in order to feel tangible, everyday benefit? This session is about navigating the balance between when we need to add/study more our technique or method vs when we've got ourselves stuck down a rabbit hole, literally in over our heads.

Our April theme is Call to Grow. As we emerge from our guarded shelters this spring, what are we reaching for? What do we do with this complicated feeling, of longing to grow, to support, to provide? How might our own human life cycle mirror that of our tree friends, in spirals and attunement toward the light? As we look deeply into the nature of our questioning, we see that the seed of new possibility is always present, and that not all circles and spirals are forms of repeating past mistakes. Come join us, as we grow from seed to forest, together. This week's session : This week is "Tree." Recognizing that we carry both our younger seed and sapling selves as well as our full grown potential - all in the same moment every day - and how this shapes our understanding and worldview of the forest around us.

This March, we explore the theme Alone Together. It's been a year of separation. How are you feeling, here in this space between together and also alone? This month, we explore the natural movement toward the warmth of spring bloom, while also holding space for the thaw that reveals all the material of existence - old leaves, emotions, memories, and yes, even garbage - that we're still working through from seasons before. Both can be true. Both can be held. And we do this both alone and together. This week's session : "Asynchronous Suffering" is the awareness that not all of us are in the same space, at the same time, that we perhaps were a year ago. The crisis of the pandemic became an almost unifying, nearly universally shared experience across the globe. As we emerge from this time now, in dramatically different ways both locally and afar, how are we handling the loneliness that we may feel alone in suffering once again?

This week's session : Our first practice this month, "Dethawing" is a nod to the expansion/contraction relationship of spring, and this year in particular. How we find ourselves smiling at the new budding life around us in one moment, and taken aback by our unprocessed grief in the next. What is it that you need to grieve, friend?

Our February theme is ALL THE FEELS. A theme that hardly needs any introduction, this month we explore what it is to honestly acknowledge our feelings, to name them, to even give ourselves permission to feel. This week's session : "Freedom Within Constraint", our theme this week, is all about understanding how the boundaries around us influence how we express and understand feelings - much like how the shape of a teapot affects the tea. Knowing that these constraints and boundaries are real and not going anywhere, how can we move toward greater ease in expression?

Our February theme is ALL THE FEELS. A theme that hardly needs any introduction, this month we explore what it is to honestly acknowledge our feelings, to name them, to even give ourselves permission to feel. This week's session : "Approaching Difficult Emotions" gets into some of the most deeply complicated parts of our human experience. How do we approach feelings or emotions that are on the ends of the spectrum that are the most challenging for us? And how does working through them affect our ability to register other emotions that are also happening in the space around us?

Our February theme is ALL THE FEELS. A theme that hardly needs any introduction, this month we explore what it is to honestly acknowledge our feelings, to name them, to even give ourselves permission to feel. This week's session : Our first session is in that very topic - "Permission to Feel." What is it to bring our awareness to how we deny ourselves access to both pleasant and unpleasant emotions? What healing can we unlock when we truly give ourselves permission to feel, without judgement or sense of needing to change anything about the existence of that feeling?

Our January theme is Patterns. We are subject to worldly patterns that create structure and cycles in our dynamic shared realm. At the same time, through forces like will, desire, fear, and trauma, we also exert patterns of our own as we move through this life. This month, we sip and sit with what creates these habits and how we might weave new patterns in a season of intentions and resolutions. This week's session : Our final session this month is "Stabilizing Transformation." All this work of stepping forth into new habits and patterns for the new year, it's worth asking ourselves and sitting with the reality that comes up - how do we maintain this new wholeness of being?

Welcome to Tea & Contemplation! This New Year's Day session served as an informal pilot for our program/teaser for what we're really excited to share with you this year. Tea & Contemplation began in the summer of 2020, and by this episode, we're really finding our groove with the show format. Since this episode is more of a "getting to know you" session, the guided tea meditation and themed discussion is more brief than usual, but it gives you a great idea of what to expect and what our style is. We hope you enjoy and we look forward to joining you in tea! Sooz & Adam
