Can pricing really build trust?
Absolutely. And if you’ve ever hesitated to share your prices or felt unsure about how much to show and when, this episode will help you reframe that hesitation.
In this solo episode, I take you behind the scenes of pricing transparency—what it really means, and why it matters more than many service-based businesses realize. We’ll explore the surprising connection between how you present your prices and how much your clients trust you. You’ll hear why a lack of clarity can backfire, and how too much information can overwhelm rather than inform.
I'll walk you through the five most common challenges business owners face when it comes to sharing their pricing, from fear of scaring clients off to concerns about competitors snooping around. I’ve seen it all—and I know how deeply personal pricing can feel.
But this isn’t about baring it all or “being totally open no matter what.” It’s about finding your version of transparency—one that aligns with your business model and supports your value. You’ll learn three key strategies that will help you clarify your message and feel more confident when talking about prices.
Plus, I’ll give you a simple self-audit you can do in just 10 minutes to see how transparent your pricing really is—and whether it’s helping or hindering your sales process.
If you’ve ever felt awkward in pricing conversations, unsure about listing prices on your site, or stuck in “how much is too much,” this episode is going to give you clarity and a fresh sense of direction.

What if your biggest pricing challenge isn’t your market, your competition, or your offer—it's what’s going on in your head?
In Part 2 of The Psychology of Pricing series, we shift our focus inward to explore how the psychology of pricing impacts your decisions far more than you might realize. Because even the most brilliant pricing strategy won’t work if you’re subconsciously undercutting yourself with doubt, fear, or outdated beliefs.
In this solo episode, I take you behind the scenes of what really influences your pricing from the inside out. I talk about the internal patterns that show up when you’re not fully owning your value—like imposter syndrome, fear of being seen as greedy, and tying your prices to time and effort instead of the outcomes you help clients achieve. These mental blocks often sneak in quietly, but they show up loud and clear in your actions: over-explaining your prices, discounting too quickly, or simply avoiding the conversation altogether.
You’ll hear relatable stories from entrepreneurs just like you and learn what it takes to move from emotionally reactive pricing to a place of calm, confident decision-making. I’ll share practical tips for flipping your focus from fear to value, setting strong pricing boundaries, and building the muscle memory you need to speak your prices with clarity and confidence.

Understanding the psychology of pricing is one of the most powerful shifts you can make in your business—and in this two-part series, I’m breaking it down in a way that’s practical, eye-opening, and yes, even a little fun.
In this first episode, I’m diving into the external side of pricing psychology: how your customers interpret, respond to, and are influenced by the prices you set. Because here’s the truth—your prices are never just numbers. They’re messages. And if that message isn’t aligned with the value you’re delivering, it can confuse people, create doubt, or stop them from buying altogether.
Every price you present is eliciting a response. The structure, the context, and even the exact number you choose all shape how people perceive your offer, its value, and your credibility. If you’re not being intentional with your pricing, you’re leaving interpretation up to chance—and that’s risky.
This episode is for you if:
I’m also sharing some of the most common mistakes I see women-led, service-based businesses make when it comes to pricing—and how those missteps cost you clarity, clients, and confidence.
And yes, I’ll give you a sneak peek at five psychology-based pricing tactics that smart businesses use to increase conversions and build trust. I won’t spill it all here—you’ll have to listen to get the full picture—but I promise, these principles will change the way you look at your pricing forever.
This is Part 1 of a two-part series. Next week, we’ll flip the focus to the internal side of the psychology of pricing—your mindset. Because the way you think about pricing is just as powerful as how your customer sees it.
So, if you’ve been second-guessing your pricing or wondering why it’s not landing the way you’d hoped—this is the episode for you.

Creating a pricing strategy can feel a lot like buying a lottery ticket—you pay the price, but there’s no guarantee of a return.
Now, consider your pricing approach. Do your clients feel like they’re gambling on whether they’ll get value? If you're not sure then you need to find out. And if they feel there's risk there, thex won't be inclined to buy. Furthermore, if they do buy and the value isn't there, they won’t stick around.
Your pricing strategy isn’t just about setting numbers; pricing, when done well, is a tool for building trust, fostering loyalty, and creating long-term client relationships. But how do you price in a way that not only reflects your value but also encourages clients to stay with you over time?
In this episode of Live with The Pricing Lady, you'll explore how to craft a pricing strategy that strengthens relationships while keeping your business profitable. You’ll discover how to price with confidence, communicate your value effectively, and set expectations that lead to lasting partnerships.
I’ll share key insights on balancing profitability with customer satisfaction, avoiding common pricing mistakes, and adapting your strategy as your business grows. Whether you're a service provider, consultant, or entrepreneur, this episode will give you the tools to develop a pricing approach that keeps clients coming back.

What has the BIGGEST impact on your prices?
Nope, not the customer.
Not your competitors.
Not your costs.
You do. Your behavior, what you choose to do or not do has a bigger impact on your prices and your pricing strategy than anything else. This is why it's important to take a look at behavior styles and pricing.
In this episode, I speak with Shelly Starks, a communications coach and behavioral analysis expert as well as the CEO of Inline Consulting Services. I wanted to understand not only her pricing journey but how she helps sales teams have better pricing discussion.
Her expertise is all about the impact of understanding behavioral styles and I was curious how it relates to and impact pricing.. Shelly shares how identifying and adapting to different communication styles can lead to more effective conversations and better business outcomes. We delve into her journey of becoming a communications coach, overcoming cultural taboos about discussing money, and improving pricing strategies through increased self-awareness and confidence. "I had a plan and a strategy for setting my prices. It felt like I knew what to do but it just wasn't working. I got no where. I realized the connection I had created between my self-worth and my prices. It was time to start decoupling my self-worth from my prices."
Does that sound familiar to you?
If so you, my friend, are not alone. It's easy to think of pricing as the logical, cold and calculated (no pun intended) thing. But the reality is your mindset gets in the way. You can know every pricing trick in the book but if you believe you are not worthy on some level, it just won't work because you won't believe it. It's up to you to starting decoupling self-worth from what you charge, failure to do so only holds you back.
Those thoughts and doubts will permeate everything you do, what you choose not to do and how you go about doing it. I've said it many times before but having your own business is a self-discovery journey and you're about to hear how one woman realized her own sense of self-worth was getting in the way of her dreams.

Do you know what pricing trends to expect in 2024?As we begin the new year, it’s a good time to take a look at what’s been happening and where things are headed.
People often mistake pricing as a “one-and-done” activity. The reality is that if your prices aren’t changing, then you’re no longer aligned with the market. Meaning you’re under or over priced. The consequences of that are many, most remarkably lower sales and profits. Ouch!
That’s no way to start a new year.
To avoid finding yourself in this situation, take a step back and look at where things are in the world – in your market, in your business, and in your pricing. To help you with that, I’ve put together some research and my own insights to help you get started. Let’s kick the year off with a look at Pricing Trends for 2024.
In This Episode:In the past few years, we have seen a lot of fast-paced change.
As you consider your pricing strategy and what to do it’s good to take a look at where have things landed and what does it mean in terms of how people behave when they make purchases. That’s where we start our discussion, with a look at the “state of affairs”.
Then we turn towards upcoming trends in pricing, as an indication of what you might expect in the year to come. And last, my recommendations on what you might focus your attention to get ahead.
Enjoy the episode.

Ever wondered what key steps businesses often overlook when they're raising their prices?
In this episode, we'll take you through three critical aspects of pricing that businesses frequently overlook when adjusting their prices. Whether you're considering raising or lowering your prices, it's easy to overlook these things. Often people are afraid to change prices especially raise them and postpone it as long as possible. When they finally do it they take big risks by applying a "rip off the bandaid" approach. Trying to get it done before they panic and decide not to. In that process, they skip some really important steps that help the increase be more successful.
I'll break down the misconceptions and offer practical advice on how you can do this more effectively.
Discover the power of differentiation – why it's essential to vary price increases across your offerings, rather than applying a uniform rate. Learn how mastering the math behind pricing can give you the confidence you need to make informed decisions. And we'll look at price communication – when to make clear communications and when a subtler approach is more suitable.
Enjoy the episode. Don't miss out on the knowledge and strategies that can reshape your business's future.

A few years ago I got an email from a client asking me to review "the attached" document. I opened it up to find a list of discounts and special offers she planned to make throughout the year. As I looked at the list my heart sank - each and every one was carefully thought out in terms of what the client was getting. But no thought had been put into whether or not they were a good business idea.
I called and spoke to her about it. Asking her what the business purpose and goal were for each one. Part way through our discussion it dawned on her and she said, "Janene, from what you're asking me I think I see what you're getting at. I did this because it's what I see others doing. You're asking me to also look at what it means and if it's right for my business. Right?"
She got it!
As the holiday season approaches, businesses often contemplate the idea of offering Black Friday discounts to lure in customers. It seems like everyone else is doing it. But is this strategy right for your business?
Join me as I explore the origins of Black Friday, its evolution into a global phenomenon, and the critical questions you should ask yourself before diving into the discount frenzy.
In This Episode:We'll look at the importance of aligning Black Friday deals with your brand values, understanding your target customer's expectations, and whether following the competition is a wise choice. Plus, how important is it to ensure that special deals and offers have a real business purpose that you can track. Without that you're just discounting for no reason and giving money away.
Deciding whether or not to offer Black Friday deals, is a strategic business move. Listening to this episode gives you the tools and insights to make an informed choice that aligns with you, your business and your customers and helps you achieve your business goals.

Have you ever looked at a bottle of wine and thought "Whoa. Ouch that's pretty pricey!" Most of us have. Of course there are wines at all price levels but what really goes into the pricing of your favorite wine - that's what I wanted to know.
One of the things that I love about what I do is that through helping businesses with their pricing I've been able to learn a lot about many different industries and about what goes into the making of that product, software or service. I enjoy learning new things and understanding why or how they work. I'm that annoying person at the eye doctor who asks what all the different machines do. Ha!
And when it comes to understanding what price to set for something, understanding what's behind the business is an important part of the process. And while cost to produce isn't the only driver of price understanding what goes into production at least at a high level is pretty important to your pricing.
Both as a business owner and as a consumer a big part of the value you get from something that you buy is related to what goes into it. And having worked in the agricultural industry for a while I had the opportunity to visit vineyards and understand wine production more. I'm not an expert by any means but I do have a much bigger appreciation.
So I ask questions like...
What goes into the pricing of a bottle of wine?
What are the differences between the most and the least expensive?
How does production or distribution impact the pricing?
You've probably wondered about it yourself. And if you're a startup or business that has to set prices for wine then the biggest question you've probably got is "How do I find the right price?"
You're in luck I've got just the lady for you.
In this Episode:This time I've brought on a guest who is an expert in all things wine and spirits-related. Ruchira Neotia, owner of Neo Margarita Ltd., is a London-based drinks professional with a passion for the art of crafting exquisite drink experiences - across wine, spirits and saké. At the heart of Ruchira's expertise is her talent for creating harmonious connections between food and beverages. As a consultant, she excels at developing optimized drink lists for restaurants that perfectly complement the culinary offerings, enhancing the overall dining experience.
She comes on the show to help us navigate from vine to wallet wine and spirits pricing. Ruchira shares with us some real insights into what we are paying for as well as some great tips for those who have to set prices for wine and spirits in their business.

Welcome to another insightful episode of Live with The Pricing Lady.
Apologetic pricing - a pricing strategy whereby your price reflects your thinking that "Dear Customer, I'm sorry that I need to charge you for buying my product, service or software". There's an embedded "apology discount" factored into your prices.
Does this strategy sound familiar to you?
For most people feeling unsure about your prices is normal, but other people can take those negative feelings to an entirely new level. As this episodes guest put it she felt guilty about charging clients for what she offered and not only did it impact her pricing, but her communication and everything she did in her business. Ultimately it also had an impact on the bottom line.
Don't fret if this sounds familiar to you Mandy Bronsil, founder of B-inspired shares with us what she had to do to "break free" from that thinking and set herself up for success. Mandy talks about starting her business shortly before Covid hit and how that impacted what she had to do and the direction her business took.
All that and so much more, enjoy!

Do you find yourself wondering how flexible your pricing should be?
In the world of business, pricing isn't merely a numbers game—it's an art of balance. And finding that delicate balance between flexibility and complexity can make or break your business.
On the one hand it's great to try and meet the specific needs of each individual client, as each one is unique. But flexibility isn't always the best thing for you, your business or your customers. It's more complex a decision than just meeting the customers needs - it's more strategic that.
And hold on, what about the downsides of working in this way? How does it impact your ways of working in your own business? And what downsides are there for clients? Yes, there are some.
Well if you've asked yourself these questions, you're in the right place.

Time based rates or packaged pricing, which is right for your business?
People often start off with time-based rates, it seems relatively simple and straight forward - at first glance. But when you look closer time-based rates can be difficult to work with and they don't actually serve you or your clients well in the long run. Trading time for money does not focus on value or the quality of your expertise. Which is one reason why most people at some point in time will consider shifting to packaged pricing.
But what does it take to package up prices? Is it the right move for your business? What are the advantages and disadvantages of packaged pricing? There are a lot of questions to be explored if you're trying to make the decision whether or not to make the shift from hourly rates to bundled value.
In This Episode:
In this episode we take a closer look at the downsides of time-based rates and the upside or power of packaged pricing. Be sure to listen in and consider what's the best move for your business.

Pricing objections will come, as a founder or business owner it's important to prepare yourself (and your team) for when a client prospect says, "No thank you." Whether it's because it's too expensive or they don't know if they need it or something else, knowing what to do next can feel confusing or even a bit scary. Certainly it can leave you wondering how to respond in the best way possible.
It's not uncommon to feel super confident telling people about your offer, after all that's your thing. You could talk about that all day long. At the same time when it comes to talking about how much people need to invest in your product or offer, you might feel a total lack of confidence. Then compound that with someone rejecting your offer and "Bam!" you're in uncharted territory - nervousness kicks in and it gets harder to know what to say.
My clients often voice concerns about handling pricing objections confidently (some even ask how to avoid them - you can't and shouldn't strive to) and are curious about what arguments they can use to defend their position. And while you do want to understand the value and communicate it well, launching into a defense when you get an objection is not the best response.
This episode was the result of countless questions from people just like you who have found themselves confronted with pricing objections. The urge to defend your pricing is natural, but there's a better way forward.
Join us as we delve into the art of asking the right questions and truly grasping the objections raised by your customers.
In This Episode:

Getting curious about their response takes the pressure off you so you can more confidently and uncover mutually beneficial solutions with your customers.

Pricing is a much undervalued business topic. It has a bigger impact on your profit than anything else in your business - yet if you're like most people you don't often give it much attention. Studies show time and again that of the four profit levers (price, volume, fixed costs and variable costs), price has the most impact on profit. Yes a bigger impact than your costs. This surprises most people. And it's counter to how they are working.
Consider for a moment what most businesses do when profits start falling? That's right they start reducing costs. But if you understood that your prices have a bigger influence on your profit wouldn't you also scrutinize your pricing in the same way you do costs? Logically it makes sense but that's not often what happens.
And if you're a new business, failing to give pricing your time and energy will make it harder for you to get your business engine running (i.e. build profitability) and achieve your business objectives.
Most pricing mistakes are avoidable.
In This Episode
In this episode I'll share with you 5 of my expert pricing tips to help you avoid the most common pricing mistakes. Let's take you from pricing woes to pricing like a pro! We'll first look at 5 of the most common pricing mistakes and then I'll share with you actions you can take to lessen the chance of you making those errors.

Understanding value is the key to unlocking pricing and profits. Often profit puzzles people - they just aren't sure how to leverage what they've got. At the same time the more you learn and understand value, the more you realized it's everywhere.
Crowdfunding campaigns are no exception. When you put together the packages people can "buy" or the offers for sponsors of your crowdfunding campaign - you have to think of value. And that's what this week's guest, in part has come to share with us.
In This Episode:I recently sat down with Margit Takacs, Change and Culture consultant, trainer and coach. She shares with us her own pricing journey. From being in the corporate world to venturing out on her own to her experience crowdfunding the writing and publishing of her newest book.
In the past, I've support people in putting together their crowdfunding packages. In many ways it's the same as offer building and pricing in any other context. But as Margit shares with us there's an added element of value to consider. I loved this conversation and if you're running your own campaign or if you've thought of publishing your own book you'll definitely want to learn from her experience.

There is no doubt about it that to succeed in your business you will need to embrace a profitable pricing mindset.
Pricing and mindset are linked. You can know how to set prices but if you don't believe you deserve them you will sabotage yourself along the entire journey. It will be so much more difficult than it needs to be. As you may have heard from me and many of my guests on this show starting your own business is a personal development journey. One that constantly takes you outside your comfort zone.
As we all know when you're outside your comfort zone is when your mind does things to "help" you not feel pain, get hurt or be "unsafe". But the way it goes about it doesn't always help in the end. In fact it can hold you back. We've all experienced it. And that's why I'm so excited to have had this chat with Jen.
She encourages you to recognize and challenge your limiting beliefs in order to achieve your goals and build a sustainably profitable business. Many of us are taught to play small and not value ourselves, which can make it difficult to charge what we are worth. But, setting prices that are too low can actually lead customers to perceive us as having low value. Therefore, it's important to set prices that reflect the value of our work.
In This Episode:Jen Gutfriend, a mindset and business coach/strategist and owner of The 6 Figure Female Entrepreneur, shares her journey of overcoming limiting beliefs around money and success and how she helps other women achieve financial freedom while working less. The key takeaway? Mindset is crucial for pricing success.
Discover how Jen navigated the challenges of setting her initial prices and how she gradually increased them based on her expertise, results, and client satisfaction.
Get ready to transform your mindset and embrace a profitable pricing mindset that propels your business to new heights.

Ready to break free from the ordinary?
Many Startups are working on technologies that just a few years ago didn't even exist. They weren't even possible, maybe not even a dream. Technology is evolving fast and so are the new and innovative ideas that come along with those advancements. And the question I often get from people is "How do I price something that's unknown?"
Do the same tactics and strategies apply? How can I help my customer understand the real value when they can't even conceive this as a possible solution? Truly innovative solutions push the boundaries of value and often require an innovative approach to pricing as well. It's true that this can be tricky but it can also be incredibly exciting.
That's one reason why I've invited this week's guest to join me on the show.
In This Episode:Cristina Ruiz de Castaneda, Founder of Blue Vega started her business after working with a really great consultant during her corporate days. She now consults herself, helping innovative Startups with new technologies develop their commercial roadmaps.
She shares with us her own pricing journey. Then we dive deep into the captivating realm of strategies for pricing unique offerings. From understanding the unconventional costs to gauging the value for early adopters, Cristina sheds light on the myriad fascinating factors that come into play.
But that's just the beginning! Cristina also shares some of the common mistakes startups make when pricing their innovations. Get ready to gain fresh perspectives, practical insights, and inspiration to navigate the intricacies of pricing your own unique offerings.

As a business owner, you've probably heard the saying "You can be good, you can be fast, or you can be cheap. Pick two."
Is it really that simple? 🤔
Recently someone wrote to me that they were struggling with this concept of good, fast or cheap as they aren't fast. And they feel pressured to be so when that's not them. Yes, I often get my show ideas from the questions people ask me. So keep asking! 😄
I believe it's important to know what your strengths are and to market to those strengths. That's how you attract people who value your approach to things. Failing to do so feel so frustrating - you end up never feel good enough.
More importantly doing so allows you to work in your "wheelhouse" of expertise and focus on what you're best at. BUT that requires you to let go of the things that aren't strengths. In this case if you're not fast, then don't market that. Lean into the fact that you deliver great results even if it takes a bit more time. Or even redefine what fast is.
You have to let go first - otherwise it'll feel like you're always "swimming against the current" 🏊♀️ i.e. struggling.
In This EpisodeWe explore the popular saying in the service and freelance industry: "You can be good, you can be fast, or you can be cheap. Pick two." We dig deeper to unpack its meaning for pricing in your business. Here's the deal: all three factors—good, fast, and cheap—are relative and depend on your target customers. Their perception of what's valuable matters most and you can influence that.
We take a look at how perceptions impact the definition of good, cheap and fast. As well as how to manage if what you do doesn't fit all those requirements. In my experience, it's not about choosing between good, fast, and cheap. It's not even about always delivering all at the same time.
It is about aligning your strengths with what your target customers value. Enjoy the episode!

Have you ever asked yourself, should I adjust prices for different geographies
Certainly if you’re doing business internationally you’ve most definitely asked yourself that questions.
And you’re not alone in that. Over the years many people have asked me the question. Well, to be precise they’ve asked me “How should I adjust prices?” People almost always assume that just because they’re selling to another country then have to adjust their prices, but as you’ll learn in this episode, it isn’t always necessary.
It’s also interesting, people are rarely worried about raising prices for countries with a higher willingness to pay, they are always concerned about being over priced. In fact they are making assumptions about what other people can or cannot afford. As I’ve mentioned before we do have to be careful about having our minds “in other people’s pockets”. Make sure you look at this question through a few different perspectives before making a decision.
In This EpisodeI share with you what to consider so you can decide if such adjustments are needed for your business.
As you know by now in pricing there are no “one size fits all” answers – it depends. And in this case we need to first take a look at the customer to find the answers. You’ll also learn about a couple of resources you can use to help you in deciding what changes to make. And then I share tips and strategies to decide if there are better alternatives to just simply selling the same things at different prices.
With a few questions, a little research and some creative thinking you can come up with the best options for your business. Enjoy the episode!

How can you improve your relationship with money?
Great question now let's get some answers.
As you know I’ve invited two money experts, Ilana Jankowitz and Clara Creitz, onto the show recently to talk about Women & Money. In part 1 we took a look at where our money mindset comes from, how it disrupts our path to success and some of the things that women do well when it comes to money. If you haven’t listened to part 1 yet, listen here.
The challenges you face with money are not always easy to identify or know where they come from. Often times making the change is difficult. It can even be emotionally painful. But it doesn’t mean that you don’t try. You keep working at it step by step, because it matters to you, your family and friends, even to your business and clients. It’s the only way to make things better and improve. We are all here to offer support.
In This Episode:In this episode, Part 2, we shift gears to look specifically at the tips and tactics the Clara and Ilana have to share with us. For example you’ll learn about a three-step process you can try that’ll help you get on the right track. You’ll hear about the importance of understanding one’s wealth structure, retirement situation, and insurance coverage as a means to understanding where you are now and how to get to where you want to go.
I loved the part about having a “money date” with loved ones to discuss finances. And you’ll discover how ancestral background and traumas can impact your beliefs and behaviors around money. As well as how the only way through to financial freedom is by you addressing those underlying issues. All that and so much more as we wrap up this two-part series.

Women-owned businesses are significant contributors to the economy. And the number of businesses founded by women in many countries out-pacing overall new business growth. Despite this women face significant obstacles when it comes to starting businesses. While there are many factors that contribute to this, one aspect has to do our relationship to money.
It’s no surprise that women face obstacles in accessing capital and funding. But if we go deeper than that women often have a tenuous, at best, relationship with money. Growing up many didn’t have good role models to follow, weren’t taught how to manage money and/or weren’t expected to develop that relationship. It also has a lot to do with how worthy a person feels and let’s face it in many cultures and families women are made to feel “less than”.
This has consequences in both life and business, in personal finances and indefinitely when it come to pricing in your business. In my experience pricing comes down to competence and confidence. I’ve seen how people’s mindsets about money impact their pricing behavior. That’s why I’ve brought two Money experts on to the show to have this conversation.
In This Episode:
In this episode (part 1 of 2) I’ve invited Ilana Jankowitz, Money Mindset expert back to the show and Clara Creitz, an expert in Personal Finance for Women, to help me explore the topic of Women and Money. The panel discussion format is something I’ve been wanting to bring to the show for a while. They share about their own journeys and their insights about women and money, including what we do well. As well as some of the things we struggle with and how to start breaking free of them.
If there’s anything I’ve learned in starting my own business it’s that it’s a personal journey more than anything else. Mindset around money for most of us, plays a huge role in our success.

What are you doing when setting prices? You should be asking yourself a series of questions.
Questions are so powerful. In fact you can completely change people’s behavior simply by asking different questions. In this case we are looking at changing your behavior as you go about setting, getting and managing your prices. The previous episode we looked at 12 questions to ask yourself when price setting. Those were some of the more basic questions. If you haven’t listened to that episode yet do so now.
Why are these questions so important? Pricing is strategy and looking at it from different perspectives helps you to determine what is most suitable for your business. Just because two businesses are selling the same thing doesn’t mean they will sell it at the same price. These questions I’m bringing to you in this and the previous episode will help you think through the strategy. Some of these questions are fairly obvious and others you’ll wonder why bother. But they all play a role in your strategy.
Do remember that Pricing in any business will be a different levels of maturity. So right now you may only consider the basics. Later on as you become more mature in your pricing you’ll expand to include more things in you pricing strategy.
In This Episode:
In this episode, we are looking at 12 more questions to ask when setting prices. When I sat down to record that first episode I came up with way more than just 12, hence bringing you part two. And yes, there are even more than the 24 I’ve chosen for these episodes. But you have to start somewhere. This second series of questions goes deeper into the strategy around your business and pricing. Not all questions will apply to all businesses but most of them you will find useful in yours.
I can even suggest as you listen to the two episodes you make a list of which questions you need to include in your thinking as you go about building your pricing strategy and price setting process.

“Price setting is a thought process not a formula.”
One big misunderstanding around price setting is, people believe there’s a mathematical formula to find the right price. This belief or hope holds many people back from doing the work that’s needed to find the best prices – finding a price that’s right for them and their customers.
So if it’s not a formula but a thought process it begs the question, what does that really mean? It means you need a something to help you think through what the best prices could be – that’s where the thought process comes in. In part it’s a series of questions you should ask centered around strategic decisions in your business. The answers to the questions not only determine what you’ll do in your business but what prices are most suitable. This is also why 1 element (like competition or cost) shouldn’t determine your price. It’s just not enough information to give you a realistic view of the “best” prices.
Recently I sat down and made a list of the questions one should be asking when price setting. Once I got going even I realized there are more questions than I first thought. Not all apply to every business, but just because it doesn’t now doesn’t mean it might not later. I am sure about one thing – many of the questions you’ve never thought of.
In This Episode:In this episode I share with you 12 questions you can ask yourself when you start setting prices. These questions are one’s that apply to all business types. This is part 1 of a two part series. Whatever you do remember pricing is a thought process – meaning after you gather the information and ask the questions you still have to make the decision on what price to choose. It often means you’ll adjust things in your business, or go back and check your assumptions along the way as you get new information. The great thing is that now you’re making decisions based on a more solid foundation.

"Love your pricing.
Love your work.
Love your clients.
Love yourself.
Repeat."
The words above Rachel shared with me when we first met. It was so refreshing because very seldom will people put something like love in the same sentence as pricing. I was also fascinated to hear more of what she had to say.
Pricing can feel like a very cold and calculated topic (no pun intended). But it has its softer sides - it's linked to things like self-love, creativity and psychology. And while what you charge should be related to the value your service, software or product delivers, there's no denying that what you choose to charge is often driven by your own relationship with money and how you perceive yourself.
🤔 It's worth taking a moment to consider.

When healers and coaches approach pricing often their goal or intention is not fully aligned yet with running a business. This lack of alignment leads to fear and conflict and ultimately under pricing.
Conflict often shows up as "I can't charge that much." "I should charge as little as possible." "If I price high then some people won't join." While your price needs to be aligned with who you're targeting, it also has to lead to a viable business. People who operate in this space are often missing the courage and confidence to charge a fair price - i.e. a price that's both good for you as a business owner and good for the clients.
This episode's guest, Anisa Zafar, shares that what made a difference for her was knowing, embracing that "money is energy."

There are many that would have us believe that there are standard prices for everything out there. Your little offer should be priced this. Or your group program has to be that. Reality is that the price you charge for what you offer is and should be unique to your business, your customers and the value your offer delivers.
The right prices cannot be the same for everyone (or written in stone) since they depend on many different things. Things which vary from business to business. As my guest in this episode shares with us feeling confident about what investment you ask people to make, comes in large part from you understanding why that price and not the other price. The more you understand the value and the more you know your customers and the market. And of course the more you know the figures in your business - the more confident you'll feel about what you charge.

Happy New Year! I wish you great joy, happiness, good times, and business success in 2023. To help you get started on the right foot for this year I want to share with you some tips - 3 things you can do in January to make sure you're starting in the best way possible.
Like anything else in life or business what we pay attention to is what will carry us through the year to come. If you ignore pricing, it will not be there supporting your business efforts. In fact, for many business it will do the opposite - it will work against them. One thing I always say is "Pricing can hurt or help your business." Let me ask you this on a scale of 1-10 (1 being I have no idea or it's totally hurting my business - 10 being my pricing is rock solid) where would you rank pricing in your business for 2023?
Be honest - you don't have to share your score with anyone if you don't want to.
Not everyone will feel a 10 but if you're 6 or below then there's work to be done for sure. Remember pricing should be viewed on a maturity scale. Meaning that each and every business is on their own journey. Where you are is where you are, only you can decide that it's time to make a change. I can only be here to support you when you're ready.
Listen to the 3 tips I share with you and reflect on what you need most when it comes to pricing right now in your business.

"Should I put my prices on my website?"
Funny as it may sound, this is the second most asked question I get from people. Which is one reason why it's the topic of this episode. I can see how the question plagues people and I don't think it's a topic worth worrying about. What's important is that you understand how to make a strategic decision about what's right for your business.
I recently ran a poll on LinkedIn around this and what happened as a result was fascinating. People we very passionate about their views on the subject - there were 3 "camps". The "yes", the "no" and the "it depends" camp. While there was a clear winner in the poll (see results here) it was interesting that each camp had significant support (i.e. votes). You're responses were very insightful too.
From the "yes" camp we heard:
"I am in team YES... I always want to know before the discovery call if I can afford..."
"If it's way out of my price range, why waste my time (and the seller's) for a discovery call."
"My prices are on my website for private clients, because I need people to book and pay the service before starting..."
The "no" camp said:
"For me this is a no - most of my services are bespoke, so the pricing varies a lot based on each client's needs."
"Advertising your prices on your website gives information to your competitors about your prices - this can be a disadvantage in some situations."
The "it depends" camp shared:
"... it very much depends on what you are selling. We sell business services and is sometimes hard because the complexity of the business and other variables drive the price..."
"It depends whether people buy online or not."
"...for 1:1 tailored courses I would say probably not, but for group courses which have a set price, then sure."
As you can see there are many opinions which is why you need to look at your business specifically.
In This Episode:
In this episode we take a deeper look at some of the things you can be asking yourself to make a decision about whether or not putting prices on your website makes sense or not. A little critical thinking here can go a long way to make this decision easier for you.

Do you know why that's your price? Or why you price is what it is?
Many small businesses have no good reason for why they have the price they have except - that's what other people are charging. In my book that is rarely a reason that will make you feel confident. Nor will it give you the best price you can have.
Knowing why your price is what it is, is what's going to give you the confidence to charge the prices that you need in your business. The best price is one that's both good for the customer and good for you. That represents the value and is suitably profitable for the business. Without those conditions being met, you've got the wrong price.
And that's what this episode's guest is here to share with her.
In This Episode:In this episode I sit down with Bethany Hawkins, CEO & Founder of Crackers in Soup. One of her biggest learnings was that she didn't account for all the costs in her business when she was setting prices. It resulted in her not have a full view of what the businesses needed in profit and in under pricing. She's going to share that and more as we discuss her pricing journey.

One thing I've seen an explosion of recently is membership sites and with that comes the question what do I charge my members. It can feel tricky. Often people use membership sites early on as a tool to create a community who's then later a "captive audience" for upselling - you can then sell them higher value offers.
In the end pricing for membership sites will always come down to who am I targeting, what's the value I'm offering and how am I using this offer - like where does it fit in the customer journey.
Sarah Santacroce started her membership site for just that reason: to create community. This sprung from her Hippie background - she just wanted to be there to serve people. She wasn't really thinking about it from the perspective of a business owner. And that's part of what **led to her under pricing the offer and consequent burn out.
In This Episode:I sit down with Sarah to talk about her journey and understand the do's and don'ts from her experience of setting prices for a membership site. After over a decade of running a successful LinkedIn Consulting business, she was inspired to create a global movement that encourages people to bring more empathy and kindness to business & marketing.**As a ‘Hippie turned Business Coach’, Sarah has written two books, hosts the Humane Marketing podcast and works with heart-centered entrepreneurs to question their assumptions when it comes to marketing & give them permission to market their business their way, the gentle way!
Sarah shares with us her own pricing journey as well as how she approached pricing for her membership site and how it's evolved. If you've thought about having such a site and are curious about one woman's experience, then this episode is definitely for you.

Recognizing when to make changes in your pricing is an important part of managing prices in any business. I've had many people on the show who shared with us that it took them quite a long time to both realize and then accept that they would need to change prices in their business. You may struggle with that as well. And it often has quite a negative impact on business, especially growing a younger business.
This is why it's so important for you to be able to identify and then monitor the main price drivers that affect what you charge.
If you're periodically checking those things and/or when you're monitoring the ups and downs of those price drivers, you'll be able to not just see the signs that you need to make a change. Often you'll see those signs before they become a real issue. You can get ahead of things - awesome! You'll have more time to mitigate circumstances related to those price drivers (like find a new supplier if the current one's price has become too high). Plus you gift yourself more time to decide what to do with your price and how to implement any changes in the most effective way.
In This Episode:
In this solocast episode I share with you 5 signs that'll help you know when to make those important changes to your pricing. Use what you learn to think reflect on the things that are impacting your prices. Make a plan so you can keep a watchful eye on those drivers and how they change. It'll help you be more prepared and ready for what needs to comes next.
Enjoy the episode and of course if you have questions you can always reach out and ask.

It's often the case that when you don't feel confident about what you charge you make judgements or even decisions for your customers. Ones that aren't yours to make. It often shows up in the form of granting unnecessary discounts. For example if you've offered discounts before someone asks for one, before they've objected or before you've understood how they value your offer.
Unnecessary discounting is one way in which businesses sabotage themselves. Don't get me wrong there's a time and place for discounting in some businesses. But more often than not people have offered discounts not because it was a sound business decision. The three main reasons they've done it are fear, it's what they learned from being a consumer or that's what everyone else seems to be doing. None of those are good business reasons. You have to be smarter about your discounting tactics, otherwise it destroys value, it hurts your confidence and it will definitely drain your profits.
In This Episode:
In this episode, I sit down with Rahgna (RJ) Lewis, the CEO of RJ Lewis Digital. Rahgna Lewis is an Army wife and a mother of three. A tinker by nature and a recovering web developer, she created what is now RJ Lewis Digital in 2010 – a boutique agency that specializes in operations strategy and business management. RJ and her team collaborate with small business owners and teams to refine processes, implement procedures, and incorporate the tools they need to get work done — smoothly.
Rahgna shares with us her pricing journey. She reflects on how at the beginning she was offering discounts no one even asked for. What led to her doing that? How did she realize there was an issue? What impact did it have? And how was she able to turn things around? What does she recommend to those of you who find themselves behaving in a similar way? She shares that and so much more.

Let's take a look behind the scenes.
In this special 100th podcast episode I’ve asked colleague and friend Pauliina Rasi to come on the show and interview me. It’s time for me to be the one in the hot seat and to answer your & her questions. It was exciting and a little daunting.
Looking back on my business journey. It’s been just over 5 years since I started the business. At first it had multiple personalities – pricing, communication and mindfulness. Seriously, I tried to do them all. I quickly realized it was confusing for clients and a lot of work for me. Pricing was clearly where I could make the biggest difference, so I rolled it all together. That’s right the mindfulness and communication elements are still there, they are tools that I use to help you improve your business and pricing. While I emphasize the Pricing elements and it’s why most people come to me, they quickly realize I’m helping them with so much more.
Reflecting upon the podcast, I realized I didn’t have a specific goal other than to bring you listeners great content. To help you improve your businesses through a better understanding of Pricing, it’s tactics and strategies and how to use them in your business. It’s been challenging at times for sure, I even thought of stopping once or twice. In the end, I knew it was best to continue. It’s all been part of the journey and it’s led me to where I am today. 100 episodes, 54 guests and thousands of downloads have led me to one conclusion – I’m in for the next 100. Are you?
I’ll continue to strive to bring you the great content you desire and seek. While also bringing in new topics, ideas and guests. I mean it when I say if you have an idea or a suggestion for the show, please share it with me. If there’s someone you’d like to see come on the show – share that too. That’s one way I will continue to build an even better experience for you.
In This Episode:
Pauliina and I discussed my path to becoming The Pricing Lady. I share some of the experiences I’ve had in my business, some things I’ve learned from the show, my favorite episodes (ugh it’s so difficult to choose), as well as some of my ideas for the future.
Thanks for celebrating with me and enjoy the show!

When it finally dawned on me that I'd done nearly 100 episodes, I couldn't really believe it. Have I really come that far and been doing this that long. It almost feels like yesterday that I started. An entrepreneur's journey is by no means an easy one. But when you can stick with it the rewards are many. And I've asked three very special guests to join me to celebrate as we approach the 100th episode.
Amanda Berlin, has been a guest more than once on the show, she was also the first coach I worked with in my business. She always has great insights and an interesting way of expressing things. It's such a pleasure to have her joining me.One of the impressions I had of
Dr. Carrie Graham, after she was a guest on the show was her ability to share so openly for the better of you listeners. Such authenticity can be hard to find, she does it with both grace and power. Something we can all do with more of.
Last but far from least, Simone Köchli. Her passion for sustainability and making an impact is contagious. She's a follower of the show and I remember during one of our conversation she shared how she went through so many episodes to really understand pricing better for her, her co-founders and the business.
In This Episode:They are each amazing in their own right, and lucky me (and you) I've brought them here together so we can learn from their lives and experience. In this episode we celebrate the podcast, the journey of the entrepreneur and so much more. Enjoy the show.

One of the people I had on the show earlier on observed that Coaches are terrible (in general) at valuing what they bring clients and it has a terrible impact on what they do with their pricing. This isn't really their fault.
With good intentions the coaching programs sometimes provide business advice, like what to charge clients. But this isn't their expertise, often the advise is lacking and sometimes even detrimental to the process of building a coaching business that will be there for the long term. I've worked with many coaches over the years and have experienced their struggles. More importantly I've seen the power of what's possible when they understand the value they bring and can confidently charge for it.

In this episode I share with you 5 Pricing Tips for Coaches to Build a Stronger Business. This is based on what I've learned in my business, from those I've interviewed and from working with my clients.

Most of the time the biggest thing standing in your way is you. Often it's subconscious and so your job is to start recognizing when you're in your own way and figure out how to shift things so you can progress. It's also true when it comes to doing pricing in your business. Your mindset, your understanding of pricing and you're ability to work through the blocks that are in your way are tantamount to you getting where you want to go.
That's been true for me, for nearly any business owner and it's true for you too. Not only that as you and your business evolve you will be faced with new opportunities and challenges that require you to....shift again. That's precisely what my guest in this episode shares with us.

One of the biggest mistakes small businesses make is not understanding what it is going to take to achieve the profitability they want to make. And yet it is so important to building a successful business. When you don't understand what it will take to achieve your goals (maybe you don't have goals), how could you possibly be doing the right things
...the answer is...
You can't.
That's what my guest on this episode, Maryia Ramanava, shared with us. It was only after having achieved 100 customers that she realized she was not turning a profit. The shock and horror.

One of the questions I get most often from people is when should I start looking at pricing. Most experts, myself included will tell you as early as possible. Why? Because you need it to understand the profit story of your business. To understand what it will take to be profitable. To explain to investors, partners, banks and others how effective your business model is. You can't do that without having had a real good look at pricing.
But most, way too many businesses leave it to the last minute and then struggle. That's in some ways what happened with my guest in this episode.
In This Episode:
Pauliina Rasi shares with us her pricing journey as she looks back at where she started with pricing. Why she started there. What it meant for her business and how it felt. As well as how her pricing has evolved, what changes she's made and what it's meant to her and her clients.

Many businesses use cost plus pricing to determine their prices but what is the role costs in pricing?
Cost-plus pricing is one of the most widely used methods for setting prices, but it also more often to not leads to over- and underpricing. While understanding costs is important to having a successful Pricing Strategy and understanding your profit story, relying on them too heavily puts your business at risk. It begs the questions what is cost-plus pricing. what are the disadvantages, why do people use it and what should you base your prices on instead.
We look at that and more in this episode.

If you feel or felt this was then you're not alone. Pricing is rarely taught, in fact most people don't even know there are people out there who are experts. Your job, one of them, as a business owner is to demystify pricing so that it's not so difficult for you to do. Learn what you need to know and figure out how to make it simple for your business.
As I discussed with this episode's guest understanding value is the key to opening up that mysterious little box you call pricing.

Avoiding everyone-itis is a better path for most small business owners. Certainly better than being a generalist.
"Who's your target customer?" I asked.
" Well, anyone." They responded with proud smiles.
"Oh no...here we go." I thought to myself.
When it comes to starting or running a business nearly every program, coach or consultant will ask you who are you targeting. There's a really good reason for that (hint: it's not to annoy you). It's because the answers to most of the questions you have around your business, depend on who you're targeting.
Most things can be done in a much more targeted and efficient way when you're clear about who your offer (product, service, software or other) best serves.
Everyone-itis is what I refer to as the disease of creating an offer targeted to towards everyone. Most businesses that suffer from it are at best struggling and sluggish. I've had many guests on the show share how when the made the decision to be more focused it shifted their business in the right direction.
In this Episode I'll share 3 problems that casting too wide a net for your target customer can cause in your business. Enjoy!

Commonly businesses believe they have to set their prices low to entice customers. However more often than not it can be counterproductive to - in fact it might be what's keeping people from buying. They just don't believe they'll get the value, because the price is so darn low. That's what my guest learned and shared with us during this episode.
She was advised to raise her prices and when she did her conversion rate shifted. Maybe the price was better aligned with expectations. Maybe it was that she herself believed more in the price she was asking for. Maybe it was both and more. The fact is things changed for her business for the better.

There are three types of discounts effective, ineffective and unnecessary. Most small business could benefit from being more careful about the discounts they offer and when. In fact, when it comes to "leaking" profits, poor discounting habits are often the biggest drain on your profits. It makes sense to put more rigor and thought behind what you're doing.
Preparing in advance for what you will do and when, and having a clear internal policy for your team (if you have one) will help you eliminate unnecessary discounting. It can also help you improve the effectiveness of the discounts you do offer.
In this episode:
We take a look at 6 questions you should be asking yourself before you decide to grant that discount or even before you decide to lower the price. These questions will help you be more clear about why your offering them and help you be more clear about the business purpose behind the decision.

Over the years I have heard the battle cries from businesses and sales people about how the competition has such low prices.
"It's killing our business. What can we do?" They cry.
Often they feel defeated and like they don't have a chance to be successful because these "cowboy" competitors are in the way, with their very low prices. "Shouldn't we lower our prices too?" They ask.
Not necessarily, in fact more often than not, it isn't the best solution. Just because the competition has a lower price doesn't mean you should too. Nor does it indicate that they have a successful business. Nor does it mean that all is lost for you. In fact, it might just be an opportunity.
To figure out what to do and how to deal with what seems like a rogue competitor you need to understand WHY, they might have such low prices and what it means for you.
My mother always said to me, "Well Janene if your friends are jumping off a bridge it doesn't mean you have to as well." Little did she know I was often leading the charge. But that aside the same thing applies to your business and pricing.

"Sometimes it's just as simple as asking for more."
These are words to live by in life and in pricing for your business. Most young businesses start out underpricing. This happens for a variety of reasons by design, lack of confidence, untested offers, their offers often have lower value. But most come to a point in time where they know they must raise their prices. That's when fear often gets in the way. Reality is if you don't test the waters and ask for more you'll never know what's possible.
My guest in this episode has done it himself and seen it with his clients, sometimes you simply have to test your prices and see what happens. Then test it again.
In This Episode:I sat down with Bob McIntosh, Co-Founder of 3 Degrees Consulting. Bob is a national speaker and entrepreneur having spent over 3,500 hours on stages and helped more than 15,000 people across the US, he’s a #1 Amazon best-selling author and has been personally responsible for helping thousands of entrepreneurs generate millions in profits through digital marketing.

Ease-based pricing. No it's not a technical term but it some that many people do at the start. For example hourly based pricing can feel like the easy thing to do. The question is, is it the right thing to do? If you do it just because it's easy, it's probably not the right thing to be doing. And just think of all those years you've spent getting great at what you do or your product does. The schooling, the hours of learning, experimenting, getting it wrong, getting it right and making it "easy" for others. Doesn't that count for something?
And just because it's easy for you, doesn't mean it's easy for everyone else. If they were to take the same path as you to know what you know or do what you do, then they too would have to invest all that time, energy and resources to get the results. You're offering short cut of sorts...and that has value. If you're pricing based on ease, then you're ignoring the value you deliver.
In this episode...
That's precisely what this episode's guest found herself doing. Dr. Carrie O. Graham, owner of Carrie O. Graham Learning Solutions and Adult Education Expert confesses she defaulted to what was easy. She soon recognized it left her feeling that what she was charging wasn't matching the time and energy she put it in nor did it reflect the value of her offer.

Pricing versus the competition may seem like the best and sometimes easiest thing to do in some businesses. In other businesses, where there's less price transparency, it may feel like you're missing out on a key piece of price setting information because you have no idea what the competition charges.
Of course the competition is an important pricing consideration for many but what does it mean for your business? Can you only know what price to offer when you know the competition?
It begs the question, should I based my prices on the competition?
In this episode, we break this down and talk about when and how to use the competition when it comes to price setting in your business.

Making the shift from job to entrepreneurship can be tricky. Pricing is one area where most people have no idea where to start. They end up making it up as they go along, which leads to mistakes & a lot of wasted energy. Finding the right prices is more difficult than needed and the uncertainty in your prices makes communicating them feel incredibly awkward. Of course, learning the hard way may also lead to some great successes. Probably with more pain than necessary along the way.
What can you do? Listen to others who have gone before you. Learn from their mistakes and successes. Someone like my guest on this weeks' show.
In this episode I sat down with Kristen Westcott, online business strategist and copy writer for coaches. When she started her business she made two simple mistakes. She's also seen, as a coach herself, how others struggle with pricing. We can learn from her experience and better understand what doesn't work and what does.

Aligning the price to the value you deliver makes sense. But too often it's simply not the case.
Selling a high value offer at a low value price is a situation many businesses find themselves in. Often because they don't understand the value of what they're offering. Sometimes that's combined with a lack of confidence in charging the higher price. Either way the result is the same, they're undervaluing their offer.
That's what I spoke about in this episode with Amanda Berlin, she's a visibility and business consultant for entrepreneurs. Helping them grow their business and impact based on tactics used and honed over 12 years in the corporate PR world.
We talked about how the first step is awareness, because only once you know the problem can you start to solve it. Only then are you ready to raise your prices. There are many ways to go about it. This is one of the things that Amanda shares with us in this episode of Live with the Pricing Lady. She realized she was selling a high touch, high ticket offer at a low ticket price. What did she do? You'll have to listen to find out.

It's quite common for people who offer services like coaching or consulting to use hourly based pricing. For most businesses such a pricing model doesn't serve either the client or the business. From the clients they often try to skip important steps that help them achieve their goal. They do so to "save" money but make it hard for to get the results they're seeking. And often you'll find they are less engaged in doing the work. For the business, it means less consistent outcome, more work and when you're more efficient (i.e. add value by bringing customer results in shorter time) you don't get paid for that added value.
If you're using time-based pricing then you're going to want to listen to this episode and hear about Sandy's journey.
In this episode
I sit down and talk with Sandy Kaufmann, Lovecoach. She helps single women identify what stops them from finding love and transform it. She shares with us what she's learned about pricing along the way. Like many she started out with time-based pricing, it seems safe. We talk about why and how she made that shift from time-based pricing to package pricing and what it did for her business.

Have you ever said to yourself "I can't charge that. I feel like an imposter"? Many business owners have felt that way. If you do then you're not alone. It's more common than you think. It's not bad nor are you stuck with that. When it comes to pricing, most people don't understand the economic value of their offer. Nor do they have a clear way to set prices they feel confident about. Without that how could you possibly feel that confidence you seek.
We pile the pressure on ourselves and are sometimes suffocating under the heaps of expectations others toss our way. It's no wonder so many people feel twinges of imposter syndrome. Pricing often brings out a lot of internal conflict around money, success and worthiness. It doesn't do you, your business or customers any good.
We know what it feels like, but the real question everyone is asking is...
"What do I do about it?"
This is why I invited expert guest, Sherine Lovegrove, to join me for an episode. She helps women suffering with Imposter Syndrome (who self-sabotage, procrastinate and sophisticatedly hide) to walk their learn how to walk their path with more confidence, with power and with grace. We had a frank discussion about the relationship between imposter syndrome and pricing. She talks about what it is, how to notice it, and what to do to start shifting.

Price setting is a thought process not a mathematical calculation.
Often when people ask me how they should know what to charge they expect me to give them a mathematical formula to make the calculation. Determining the right price for your offer is different. It's a thought process where you look at different aspects to determine which prices are best. Businesses that treat pricing as a math problem are missing one of the most important rules of pricing:
Pricing is rooted in a deep understanding of the customer and what they value.
When you understand that you realize that a mathematical equation can’t possibly incorporate the a customers perception of value for example or how they feel about the brand. Or for that matter the competitive environment. Which means in order to set the best prices for your business, it's time to think about pricing in a different way. Start thinking about it as a thought process - one where you incorporate the different aspects that drive your pricing.
In this episode of Live with the Pricing Lady, I dispel some of the myths around price setting and share with you the formula I use with clients (hint: it’s a thought process people). The great thing about the thought process is it applies to just about any type of business. Meaning it can work for you too.

I can't charge people because this isn't my real job. I can't charge because I'm new. I can't charge because they can't afford it.
These are just a few of myriad reasons people give for giving things away for free and for setting very low prices. The problem is these excuses are a way to avoid the possibility of someone rejecting your offer. But the questions are, will these excuses get you where you want to be in a reasonable time frame?
The simple answer is, no.
None of these are the decisions of a savvy business owner. One who's making decisions in order to build a profitable business that will be there for the long term for their clients. It's true that a business without money to reinvest back into the business won't be there for long if at all.
That's what I speak about with this week's guest in this episode of Live with the Pricing Lady. She started her business while in a corporate job. And felt very conflicted about charging clients. But even after leaving the corporate world, she still found reasons not to charge. Until one day she saw the light and starting valuing what she did, and charging for it.
Valentina Coco, helps leaders and managers create support systems for people to perform at their best. Helping them to create strong, inclusive teams, that function - driving results and innovation. Growing up in a small town in Sicily, she dealt with bullies and marginalization as a half-Chinese “goody toe-shoes.” Which is in part why now she's dedicated to diversity and inclusion in the corporate world.

Everybody loves a sale. But that doesn't mean it's right for your business. As we head into the seasons where retailers start dropping prices it's tempting to use similar tactics in your small business
BUT is it the right thing to do for your business?
Great question!
As my mother used to say, "Just because everyone else does it doesn't mean you have to."
We're exposed to this tactic all the time as consumers but it's a flawed strategy for most small businesses. In fact, most businesses spend more time, energy and creativity trying to lower their prices then they do putting efforts into maintaining or raising prices. Competing on price alone, is very risky especially for small businesses.
In this episode we'll take a look at three reasons why it might not be right for your business.
Dirty, disgusting discounting habits. They are killing your business and it needs to stop…now. Have you ever granted a discount because:
If so, you’re not alone. These nasty discounting habits seem harmless and many people fall victim to them.. But just because others do it, doesn’t mean you should too. If this is what you’ve been doing and you’re not earning enough it’s no wonder. There is a time and place for discounting in some businesses. Once it becomes a habit or something you lean on when you feel uncomfortable then chances are you’re not granting them for a good business reason. Meaning it’s hurting not helping your business.
It’s time to kick the habit and get smart about IF or WHEN you use them. And if you choose to use them to be smart about what types and how you can use them to truly help your business.
In this episode…
In this solo cast episode of Live with the Pricing Lady we first have to take a look at why you’re doing it and how it’s hurting you and your business. Like anything else your intention here is important. If your intention is good but it’s not serving you then something has to change. Then I’ll share with you 5 Tips to avoid the nasty discounting habits that are killing your profits.

Price and brand are intricately connected. Both topics drive perceptions, willingness to pay and customer behavior. As a business owner you need to understand how your brand influences what people do and what they're willing to pay. As well as how the price impacts your brand. When you under the role they both play and the way in which they influence purchasing behavior you'll better understand your business.

Knowing when and how to raise prices in your business can make a huge difference in your profitability. There are many signs that cue you in it's time and reasons to do so.
Many clients ask me the question "How do I know when to change my prices?" Often they are asking, because they know it's needs to be done but aren't sure why and how. The fear of losing even one customer is so big they can't reconcile it in their minds.
As a result, many small businesses avoid raising prices until it's become such a huge a problem (i.e. they're losing sales or profits) they only other choice is to shut down. Sustainably profitable businesses are proactive when it comes to pricing and making changes. As a result they can often ride out tough times better than the rest.
In this episode of Live with the Pricing Lady look at the 10 signs that tell you it's time to change, or even raise, your prices.

The adversity of your thinking is something you will need to overcome at times. When it comes to your business (and pricing and nearly all things in life) you'll be faced with challenges. Some will exist due to your own thinking.
Change your thinking and change the quality of your mind. Often being able to overcome the adversity of your thinking is what allows you to finally move forward when your stuck or find the courage to do what is needed to get where you want to go.
I remember in one of my earlier jobs a boss came in and said "Janene we're taking XYZ part of your job and handing over to this person." My first reaction was fear. Which was a strange reaction because it was a part of my job I really didn't like. Once I realized that, "click" I felt like the luckiest person in the world. At first I made myself a little crazy. But once my mind shifted so did my attitude.
I walked in and wrapped all the things up related to that so I could hand it over to the new responsible person...then I could focus on what I really enjoyed. I had overcome the adversity of my thinking and that gave me space to focus on the right things.

In this episode of Live with the Pricing Lady, featuring expert guest Kamile Cawley, she shares with us her business and pricing journey. She'll talk about how she's been able to achieve more and how she's been able to overcome adversity of your own thinking.
Kamille is a Network Maven and Connection Strategist helping entrepreneurs elevate their vibe, connect to their message and build a community that allows them to have more momentum and abundance in their life and business. I'm excited to have her on the show and I know you're going to get so much out of this.
Let's take a look at how you can overcome the adversity of your thinking; to go from business failure to success.
Do you know how what you say impacts customer willingness to pay? Clarity of message is key in all things, and pricing is no exception.
A customer's willingness to pay for something can be fickle. That's one reason why an important part of pricing is to consider the message. The message your prices deliver. What message you deliver with your prices and the message your actions around pricing communicate to your customers.
You're communicating a lot! Whether you realize it or not, not only what you say but what you do matters in pricing. And the clarity of those messages is critical to your business success.
In this episode...
That's what we're talking about in this week's episode of Live with the Pricing Lady with my guest expert Kate Gilbert. She helps high-achieving professionals improve their public speaking by finding their authentic voice and building confidence. She's going to be sharing with us her own pricing journey as well as her take on the importance of a clear message.
Let's take at what Kate has to say about how to have a clear message and how it might be impacting what your customers are willing to pay.

Entrepreneurs often say, "I'm not ready to talk about pricing yet." I have more to do first. Even though they've been at their business for months even years.
Unfortunately too many businesses leave PRICING to the last minute and then suffer the consequences. Often their profits suffer.
In this episode of Live with the Pricing Lady I share 3 reasons why it helps you to start with pricing early on. When you understand what it helps you to do or avoid then you'll see why it's important to do it earlier rather than later. Helping you to mitigate even avoid some of the downsides of waiting until the last minute.

When you know thy customer it's easier to know that price. The number one mistake businesses make with their pricing is:
…not taking the time to understand the customer.
This usually comes in two forms, they are trying to target "anyone" or they are moving forward with untested assumptions about customers. This makes it very difficult to find prices that fit customers. Beyond pricing is makes developing the right offers, marketing them and selling them a bigger challenge than necessary. Typically companies end up pricing low because they feel insecure. They are new and feel that to entice customers they have to have a low price.
In this episode...
In this episode solocast episode I will go into more detail on the importance and what it means you need to do. We'll look closer at why businesses do this, what the consequences are when you aren't clear on who you're targeting and the #1 way to avoid making the mistake.
Let's take a closer look at why you need to "know thy customer".

Pricing behavior is fascinating and it is influenced by many things – like geography, culture, upbringing, industry etc.
We can learn so much by simply observing the world around us. Many years ago I was in Egypt at one of the markets and there was a stall with at least a dozen signs that read things like “hassle free pricing” and “hassle 10% extra”. It was also in multiple languages. I still have the photo too.
Now if you’ve been to a market in Egypt you know haggling is part of the process… it’s a natural pricing behavior in many parts of the world. This vendor was making a clear statement about his brand and customer experience people could expect. Also his sense of humor. It affected his pricing behavior and that of potential customers as well.
In this episode…
In this episode of Live with the Pricing Lady, I’ve got special guest Sophia Syed. She’s the founder of Also Sophia Ltd. and Boss It Club. Also Sophia focuses on helping break down barriers. They supply ethnic celebration products for minorities within North America and Europe and have been picked up by Walmart. She’s fascinated by how different people, cultures and geographies relate to pricing…even the process that’s involved. She’ll share her own pricing journey. We’ll discuss what she’s observed, and how that’s played in her pricing behavior and what you should consider in your business.
Let’s take a book at how culture, geography and even your upbringing influences you and your customers’ pricing behavior.

Raise profits (or even maintain)...that's an important part of growing your business.
To do that you've got to understand the things that influence your profits and know how best to leverage them. Your goal isn't to raise profits just because you can. It's to do so in order to continue to be there for your customers. To build your business, shift and evolve and for some of you it's about leaving behind that your legacy.
How many profit levers does a business have?
Do you know what they are?
Are you fully leveraging them?
Most businesses are not fully leveraging pricing. Most often because they're so focused on the other levers. But here's the kicker, price is the most impactful profit lever. Meaning if you want to raise profits, price is often the MOST EFFECTIVE way to do it. Or in the converse it could be the thing that's draining your profits and sabotaging your efforts in other areas.
In this episode I share more about the profit levers and take a look at the things that influence profits and how that relates to what your doing with pricing.

How does purpose and impact affect pricing?
Traditionally we think of value being derived simply from the functions & features of a product or the outcome of a service. But what customers value often goes way beyond that.
What about the influence of a company's purpose or their impact on the world? How does that affect value perception? And how does that affect what you charge? That's what I spoke about in this episode with expert guest Melissa Buch, on Live with the Pricing Lady.
Melissa is the founder of brandbuch: a multi-disciplinary consultancy helping companies and brands find and enhance their purpose as an engine for growth. It's a team of independent people around the world coming together to create purpose-centric strategies, experiences and designs. When it comes to purpose and impact Melissa is amazing and I'm thrilled to be having this discussion with her about how that can influence how people perceive the value your business brings and in turn your pricing. You're going to love this interview.

A Pricing Strategy is the first step to setting your prices. More than that it will help you steer your business in the right direction and ensure that your pricing is setup to support your business objectives. Without one it's like playing the children's game pin the tail on the donkey. You're blindfolded, spinning in circles and in all likelihood headed in the wrong direction.
In this episode of Live with the Pricing Lady I'll share with you the top 5 reasons you need a solid Pricing Strategy and how that can help you in your business.

Pricing your offer is a challenge under "normal" circumstances but what if you offer isn't like the "magic pills" everyone else is offering? It's not that it's not valuable it just doesn't have that "sexiness" that others offer.
Does that make it harder or easier to price your offer?
How does it (or does it) change what you do?
What does that really even mean?
In this episode...
In this episode with Special Guest Jen McFarland about what she means and how it affects pricing your offer. She founded Women Conquer Business to help entrepreneurs and small businesses slay technology overwhelm, streamline processes, and amplify their impact. Transforming their marketing strategy and operations from a huge headache into a business-building asset.
She shared with us her pricing journey. Jen confesses she was charging way too little and learned the hard way about the pitfalls of charging by the hour. Also the struggles she's had pricing her offer. If you're trading time for money or if what you're selling isn't the coolest thing on the block, then you'll want to hear what Jen has to say.

"It took me a long time to realize the value I delivered."
Reality is if you don't value what you deliver your customers, chances are no one else will either.
Too often business owners don't really believe in what they deliver. On the surface they say and do seemingly the right things, but at a deeper level that lack of certainty is silently sabotaging their efforts. In order to price what you offer the right way, not only do you need to know the value you need to believe it as well.
In this episode of Live with the Pricing Lady I sat down with special guest Joy Foster, Founder of TechPixies Ltd. TechPixies helps women upskill with social media in order to return to work, change careers or start a business.
Joy says about her own business journey, "It took me a long time to realize the value I delivered." As you'll hear in the interview her success wasn't overnight and it did take internal work get where she is today.
You're going to love this interview there's so much to learn from.

Years ago one of my bosses came to me and said, "Janene, you've got to help me. The management team is having a heated debate about what's more important value pricing or transactional pricing. As I'm not the expert, I need to know what to tell them. So, which is most important?"
I smiled and said "Neither. Both."
Then I went on to explain to him my theory called the Leaky Bucket of Pricing.
In this episode share that theory with you. Plus we'll take a look at what it means you need to be aware of and do.
