In pursuit of an alleged fare jumper, the cops wound up shooting the suspect, two random people, and one of their own. The city of New York spent $150 million in extra overtime last year in order to apprehend $104,000 worth of fare jumpers. The answer is clear: defund and abolish the NYPD. Also: fare strike!

In these moments, Greenfield identifies modes of solidarity and participatory democracy that might become the building blocks of a new society. In this first episode of interviewing socialist politicians, Jorge interviews Stephanie Gallardo, a Democratic Socialist running for U.S. Congress in Washington's 9th Congressional District. Stephanie is a Seattle native who is a teacher, union leader, and a DSA endorsed candidate for office. Stephanie's campaign is distinct from many running for office because she is running on an explicitly anti-imperialist platform. For her, being an anti-imperialist is personal for the U.S. intervention in Chile led to her family needing to escape the Pinochet regime. In this EXCITING and HOTLY DEBATED passage, Lenin lays out his plan for transitioning from capitalism to communism via a transitional phase of "lower stage communism." In this phase, you still have to go to work and earn money but now your boss is the state, albeit a state whose foundational goal is its own death-by-withering. Only once the economic basis for that withering is achieved can we ascend to "higher-stage communism" a.k.a. FULL COMMUNISM, a stateless, classless society that runs "from each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs." Is this a good plan? What are the pros and cons? Jamie and Aaron go over Marx's 1875 essay "Critique of the Gotha Program," in which he gives some spicy takes on the platform proposed by the Social Democratic Workers' Party of Germany (SDAP) and the General German Workers' Association (ADAV) as they prepared to unite into one party at a conference held in the city of Gotha.
