The Nigerian dream has morphed from simply wanting a decent middle-class life to seeking economic refuge in distant foreign lands. Every day millions of Nigerians and Africans are leaving their homeland for Europe and North America. This exodus is costing Africa some of its best hands and human capital which is slowly destroying the African economy. In today's post, I will discuss the issue of brain drain in Sub-Saharan Africa using Nigeria as a case study. Also, I will highlight the cause of the brain drain in Africa and its impact on the African economy.
WHAT US BRAIN DRAIN?Brain drain is said to be the movement or Emigration of skilled individuals or talent from one region or country to another. This move is said to be economical as this individual seeks better working conditions, higher wages and a better standard of living.
CAUSES OF BRAIN DRAIN IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICAECONOMIC REASONSLow Standard. The living conditions in most sub-Saharan African countries are poor. The majority of people in this region do not have access to basic amenities like clean water, constant electricity, good roads and medical care. Even for mid-class living this is an issue, hence the need to migrate to places where they have access to these amenities.
Poverty. The poverty rate in sub-Saharan Africa is said to be at 86.5% with a decline of 4.3% as of 2018. These people want to seek economic refuge in first-world countries through illegal means making it difficult for the receiving countries to plan accurately for this uncountable population trooping into their countries.
High cost of living. The average inflation rate in Sub-Saharan Africa rose 14.5% in 2022. The increase in inflation coupled with the rising poverty rate has made it difficult for most Africans to afford basic commodities. Families are leaving to seek greener pastures elsewhere.
Unemployment. The unemployment rate in sub-Saharan Africa is capped at 6.7% in 2021. However, this does not reflect the reality in some of the major economies in Africa. For instance, Nigeria and South Africa, which are the major economies in Africa, have a youth unemployment rate of over 30% many of which are skilled (and non-skilled). The rest are either unemployed or underemployed, so they look towards developed nations for better opportunities.
POLITICAL REASONS.One of the leading causes of emigration in sub-Saharan Africa is political instability. Most countries in sub-Saharan Africa have poor political institutions which leads to poor economic management that impacts the lives of its citizens. There is neither the political will nor desire to better the lives of African people by its political elites who see power as a right and not as a means to serve.
So emigration or the brain drain in Africa can also be said to be a vote of no confidence in the African leadership. MOST Africans are leaving their country because they did not believe in the capacity of their government which also show no interest in leading.
The African governments are not a representation of their people. There is no alignment between the political elites and the masses. This has gone on for ages and most Africans are taking destiny into their hands by seeking a better life abroad
There are also cases of neo-colonialism whereby first-world countries meddle with the affairs of African countries, destabilising these countries in order to exploit their natural and human resources. mostly in cahoots with the African government.
INSECURITYThe political instability in Africa has led to civil conflict among major regions and countries. This has made the region unsafe for its citizens who are fleeing to other regions.
The rise in poverty has also increased the crime rate, making it unsafe for citizens and foreign investors to do business.
IMPACT OF BRAIN DRAIN IN SUBSARAHAN AFRICAOne of the major drawbacks of brain drain in Sub-Saharan Africa is that the best hands who are capable of fixing the problems of this region are leaving.
There is also the economic impact of having your most skilled individuals leave your country. For instance, it is said that 9 countries in Africa lost over 2 billion dollars since 2010 due to the massive emigration of doctors trained in Africa into North America and Europe. This has led to a massive deficit in the health sector in most African countries where primary Healthcare is already a luxury.
Another issue with the massive immigration in Sub-Saharan Africa is that puts pressure on the Economic and Social infrastructures of these first-world countries that receive them. So the emigration problem is a challenge to the receiving and departing countries. It has also led to strict immigration rules which has opened the channel for illegal immigration. Millions of Africans die in the Sahara desert in their bid to fly into Europe to Italy. Many have also been forced into modern-day slavery during the process of their transition
POSSIBLE SOLUTIONSThe massive immigration in Sub-Saharan Africa is a global crisis and should be tackled as such. There should be a genuine desire by the international community, the African people and its leaders to solve the socio-economic issues plaguing the region which has led to the displacement of millions of Africans.
To engender the trust of the African people there needs to be reform of its political system. One of the key ways to gain political stability is to bring transparency to the electoral process. This can be achieved with the use of blockchain technology to carry out elections. Citizens need to elect leaders that reflect their hopes and dreams for their country. This will bring about the stability needed to build and grow the African economy. Political stability brings about economic prosperity which in turn engenders the confidence of its people, giving them a reason to remain and build with its government.
Also, there should be a review of the involvement of superpowers like America, Britain and China in African politics. Partnerships between African countries and all the first-world countries need to be beneficial and or parasitic. There should be a genuine desire to help the African continent develop and become autonomous requiring little or no aid from their first-world counterparts.

LIVING ON-CHAIN
To many across the globe, blockchain technology and cryptocurrency are novelties, even though these industries have existed for decades. Those in the industry have tagged crypto to the future payment system which will dismantle the current financial system, making it obsolete. Although I find this narrative quite interesting, I want to share a different perspective on the matter that gives a more present outlook on cryptocurrency and the use of blockchain technology.
My view on blockchain technology is quite different from many people in this industry mainly because of how I got into this space. My first interaction with blockchain technology was via the web3 platform, Hive. This was long before the word ‘web3’ was ever a thing, and I had firsthand experience using this technology, which has shaped how I view this industry.
I would like to emphasize the ‘usage’ of blockchain technology because it is at the core of everything crypto, however, many people do not understand or even use this technology directly. Most people interact with blockchains via proxies like centralized exchanges, hence their futuristic views on blockchain technology. To them, this space is more speculative than practical.
Blockchain technology as used in the crypto space has various use cases other than being a store of value or means of exchange. In its basic form blockchain technology is a data-capturing system, and how this data is being used is changing. Now there are fungible and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) which are fundamentally the same thing (data captured by the blockchain) but used differently. In essence, value is being captured differently through art, interaction, work, etc, and transferred across the globe seamlessly. This isn’t happening in the future but now.
In addition, blockchain technology and cryptocurrency aren't here to dismantle the current financial system. This is a debatable narrative that has many boomers in the government confused and afraid, hence their anti-crypto policies. New technologies are indeed disruptive and blockchain technology and cryptocurrency threaten the current establishment, however, I believe both can co-exist offering the masses alternatives.
Cryptocurrency is not to be feared, and neither is its impact reserved for the future. There are numerous ways in which this technology and industry are changing the world currently, namely:
FACILITATES CROSS-BORDER TRANSACTIONS
One of the major problems cryptocurrency and blockchain technology solves is cross-border payments. This might not be an issue in most Western countries but it is just a fundamental issue in most third-world countries like Nigeria, Ghana, and Venezuela. These countries are now plugged into the global economy thanks to (cryptocurrency and blockchain technology) which has not only led to financial inclusion but also facilitated significant economic growth through technological advancement.
Also, cryptocurrency has reduced the cost of cross-border payment by removing the middlemen i.e. banks. Now individuals and institutions can engage in peer-to-peer transactions that are fast, secure, and in some cases feeless.
CREATING JOB OPPORTUNITIESCryptocurrency and blockchain technology is creating job opportunities for millions of people across the world. In 2022, there was a 395% growth in crypto job openings, and the crypto industry accounts for 0.13% of the entire job market, this might seem insignificant but also consider that this is an industry with a market cap less that of Apple Inc.
It is also important to state that these jobs cut across industries and are not restricted to FinTech. There are accountants, creators, and lawyers who are specialized in crypto-related activities. So it is safe to say that this industry is multi-dimensional and impacts the growth of other industries as well.
CREATING INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITYThe crypto industry provides investment opportunities through various avenues such as decentralized finance (DeFi), stablecoins, and non-fungible tokens (NFTs). These financial instruments foster the growth of the crypto space and also enable individuals who were previously excluded from traditional venture capital spaces to participate in wealth generation by reducing barriers like capital requirements and access to information.
Furthermore, the industry is revolutionizing fundraising methods through Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs) and Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs). This has made funding more cost-effective and accessible to smaller projects and communities. By providing funding to innovative ideas, the crypto industry has helped accelerate technological development within and outside the crypto space.
DEPOLITICIZING THE ECONOMYCryptocurrency also depoliticalizes the global economy. Now depending on your political inclination, this might be a good or bad thing. If you are pro-establishment you want the government to regulate our fiscal policies. However, if you are like me and you have little trust in your government and its establishments, you want more control over your finances. Transparency is key in the future of finance and many traditional financial institutions cannot offer it to the masses.
Those who trust the system and choose to play within its perimeter can carry on. However, those who do not trust the system have the alternative through cryptocurrency and do not have to risk financial exclusive. This is the beauty of the world we live in today.
Now many believe that crypto would dismantle the current financial system. If that is ever the case then I believe it was not worth saving in the first place. A system that cannot protect itself isn't worth having in the first place because it's porous and susceptible to malicious attacks and manipulation by bad actors. What we should strive for is a system that is self-regulated and transparent, and this is what cryptocurrency offers.
CONCLUSIONThe crypto industry has moved past the scope of speculation. It has become the backbone of technological advancement across the globe and its impact is been felt by the millions of people actively participating in the development of this industry. It is also revolutionizing how we perceive, store and transfer value.
So we all must begin to see this industry for what it truly is–an important part of our present global economy. It cannot be wished or regulated away. Many people like myself have come to embrace cryptocurrency as a way of life and living on-chain

Are you about to start your finance journey from scratch without any clear-cut plan towards attaining your financial goal? Well, do not worry, I am on a similar journey myself, and in this post, I will be sharing with you my journey, highlighting my mistakes, wins and lessons learnt on my road to financial freedom.
You might ask, "How does one start their financial journey with nothing?" I did ask myself the same question when I started, and I fell victim to a couple of get-rich-quick scams that promised the same. So when anyone tells me I could make money without investing money I am usually dismissive, which takes me to my first point–perception.
You might have come across the book, Rich Dad Poor Dad Book by Robert Kiyosaki and Sharon Lechter
. If you are like me, you hated the book. Yes, I did, especially the part that talks about poverty and wealth being transferable by association. The author explains that if one is born poor they are most likely going to remain poor by virtue of the people in their life and the mindset they perpetuate and there is little they can do about it. I hated the idea of being condemned by reason of my birth or association and that made me miss the message, which is we all need to change not just the people we associate with but also how we view the world to attract abundance.
THE POOR MINDSETI am sceptical about almost everything which makes me resistant to change. Once upon a time, I did not believe it was possible to make decent money as a content creator because I did not know anyone who was making much in a sphere until a friend of mine got a job with a foreign firm that paid seven figures, and it wasn't your regular 9-5 job. He worked at his convenience and he was making more than most people I knew who had professional tags to their name. This opened my mind to the possibility of earning beyond my financial threshold, and that gave me the drive to want more for myself.
Certain mindsets are limiting and it is impossible to break them when your reality echoes and reinforces such a mindset, hence the need to change not just your mindset but things around you so you do not self-sabotage.
INVEST IN YOURSELFThis might sound cliche but it is the most important path to a life of abundance. So far I have said nothing about making money because most people believe that money is the answer but it is merely the product of the effort you put into yourself and the world.
The beautiful thing about investing in yourself is that it costs little to nothing. There is an unimaginable amount of information on the internet you can benefit from (like this one). You can learn new skills and other people's experiences to better position yourself for better opportunities.
INVEST IN RELATIONSHIPSThis is a recurring theme in most of my blogs and vlogs and I cannot emphasize this enough. Relationships are as important as your knowledge or skill. Having the right relationships grants you access to the right place and people. It makes the journey to the top a lot easier.
The easiest way to build strong relationships is by joining communities (online or offline). Ensure you are part of something that gives your life meaning and purpose. This is the essence of being part of a community.
TELL YOUR STORYStorytelling is one of the best-performing form of content in the world and you should capitalise on this as well. Yes, creating content should be part of your financial plan as it exposes you to more people and opportunities. Most of the top entrepreneurs are using social media to promote their products and services and grow their brands.
By telling your story you give people more insight into your journey and this opens up the door to new opportunities. Now there are web3 blockchains like Hive that buy creators for creating content. This is a viable means to create wealth for yourself by simply telling your stories and networking with people across the globe via microblogging platforms like Leofinance . It has never been this easy to create wealth
CREATE A FINANCIAL PLANFor the most part of this post, I have discussed the social and psychological aspects of becoming empowered financially. Now we have to deal with the money part where most people struggle and understandable because this is the part where you get to fix your financial myths.
Having a financial plan is imperative to your success. You need to have something you are working towards, irrespective of the size of the plan. This doesn't mean there is no room for flexibility. You can always adjust your plan but having one gives you the structure you need to make the required change. I discuss this more in the video above.
Also be realistic with your expectations. Take gradual steps to the top. You don't become capable overnight. Taking on huge tasks would only expose your weakness and that can inhibit you from moving forward. You have to revisit your plans occasionally to see what's working and what's not. Work with your plan, not for or against it.
RINSE AND REPEATFinancial Planning is not a one-time thing. It requires constancy and commitment. If you want to become financially free then you must commit to the process of learning and growing, never letting setbacks hold you down.
CONCLUSIONYou might not have all the answers or a clear vision of where you want to be financially, however, following these tips can set you on the right path. By reviewing your money myth you change your attitude towards money in a matter that favours you. With a better mindset you can connect with the right people that can teach and open you to new opportunities. Then comes the need for structure and planning, so you get to choose their right opportunities, and getting in this pattern clearly sets you up for success and improve your finance.

HOSTING MY FIRST HIVE MEET-UP
Today I hosted 13 hivians in Ibadan at the Agodi Gardens. This comes after months of planning. I was supposed to host one in Lagos about a year ago but it didn't happen--this one almost never did.
After months of planning we were able to meet up today and I must say this is one of the best achievements of the year. At first I was nervous. Most of the people who signed up were newbies and I did not have prior communication with them. However, it turned out great since we all had one thing in common--hive.
We spent the next 4hours sharing our hive stories and motivating each other. We took a digital community into the physical realm and it was amazing.
I am hoping to host more of these meetups in the coming months. I want to say a big thank you to @hivenaija for the funds to host this meetup and everyone who showed up, namely:

Before I go into today’s update I want to update the community on some of the changes in regards to the hive-naija meetup. Initially, we were supposed to have 3 meetups in 3 different locations in Nigeria simultaneously, but after much deliberation, we have decided to have two, in Port Harcourt and Ibadan.
The Lagos meetup has been cancelled due to the low turnout (which is surprising). Most of the registered participants are either in school or not in town. We will work towards something else for Lagos before the end of the first quarter of the year.
Currently, we have 14 registered participants for the Ibadan meetup, namely:

So far, Ibadan meetup has the highest number of participants (thankful). Ibadan and Lagos’s budget for the meetup (from the hive-naija account) will be combined. So we are looking at $55 for Ibadan and $45 for Port Harcourt. @young-boss-karin will be responsible for the disbursement of funds as she is in control of the account.
The hive-meetup is scheduled for 12:00 pm at the Agodi Gardens (Please you have to be registered to attend). We have a list of fun activities lined up: chess, scrabble, cards, paintballing (that will cost about 2,500 per person–if you are interested). There is also a plan to create a short video ad for hive/hivenaija.
We are also calling out to other members to support the meetup in whatever capacity.
Twitter Space. So on Wednesday, I will be hosting my first Twitter space session tagged: WHAT IS HIVE? The goal is to have as many hivians (most from Nigeria) tell their success stories on hive. The following accounts have shown interest and will most likely speak on that day:

Yesterday I was thinking about how I could help people transition from a toxic and underpaying job to pursue their dreams or a new career path. Leaving a job isn't an easy task and many people never make that change, even when they do not find fulfillment in what they do and at the hefty cost of losing themselves. It is even harder for those with responsibilities. So in this video, I will work you through some simple steps to take if you want to make a career change or pursue your dreams. I can be content with less?
Less than my dreams and expectation of life?
This is one of the questions I ask myself every day, and to me, the answer is 'yes'
Yes, I should be able to settle for less (than I have now). I certainly should not be miserable because I am not all I thought I could be? To be frank there is no possible way to do all the things I can imagine.
I can attempt all my goals--there is certainly no harm in trying. However, I have a realistic expectation of myself and maybe I am wrong. Maybe I can be or do better than I think but that isn't the goal.
What is the goal?
Living a life I am proud of and in all honesty, I am proud of myself--super proud. I have achieved things people (even myself) could not fathom. When I examine my life I see growth.
My happiness has nothing to do with what I have but who I am, because in all honesty, at no point in my life (or yours) will I stop wanting things.

Started my driving classes two days ago. It's been good so far. Got to move a vehicle for an hour straight without stopping (for the first time). Now I feel I can drive on the highway.
Okay, that would be me overstepping. I can barely go 20km/hour. Hopefully, by the end of my driving class (which is in 7 days), I should be able to move around comfortably.
About the driving lessons, I don't think I am getting my money's worth. The first day was quite insightful, I got to do a lot of driving. Yesterday I spent barely 30mins behind the wheel. I wasn't satisfied. There is no way I am spending 20,000 naira just to drive around for 30 minutes.
After today's listen I will make up my mind on whether I want to continue or not. Fortunately (and unfortunately) we live in a lawless country, so getting a learner's permit isn't necessary. However, I want to make sure I am not endangering anyone by being on the road.
So, if I am to discontinue (continue), I will always have an expert with me in the car anytime I am driving for the next 2-3months; find a safe space to practise in my neighbourhood.
Most people say driving isn't difficult, nevertheless, I don't want to be one of those silly drivers on the road that endanger other motorists. So I will learn all I can, on and offline.
Car issue No one told me owning a vehicle will be this difficult. I am already stressed out by the plethora of things I need to do/fix.
First, I needed to change the radiator from a single cell to a double cell so it can better manage the car's temperature. Afterwards, I had to do some bodywork.
Yesterday, we discovered that one of the legs of the car has issues, mainly because the road here is horrible with many potholes. So I will have to fix that.
I can't wait for all my documents to be ready so I can leave here. Since I came to Lagos I have been stressed by one thing or another. I don't like it here at all.
I miss my very predictable and supposedly boring life. Am I becoming rigid? They say things like this come with age. I am still young (I suppose) but these days I resist change.
Speaking of change. A lot is happening here on hive lately and I can't pay attention to most of it because I am occupied with offline activities. That's another source of headache for me.
Just one more week and it will be over. I can't wait.
