This listener-favorite episode is back because it answers the grooming questions every Doodle parent has but doesn’t always know how to ask. I’m joined by grooming industry expert River Lee, and together we shine a gentle light on what’s really happening behind the grooming table — the challenges, the pressure, the heart, and the deep desire groomers have to do right by your dog.
This conversation is all about teamwork, understanding, and helping your Doodle feel safe, confident, and cared for.
💡 You’ll learn:
• Why grooming costs are rising and why salons are booked solid
• What’s behind the nationwide grooming shortage
• How often your Doodle actually needs a full groom
• Why groomers sometimes must shave a severely matted coat
• How to prepare your Doodle for calmer, easier grooming days
• The well-meaning habits that unintentionally make grooming harder
• The simple at-home routines that help your groomer say “yes!” instead of “I had to shave”
If you’ve ever left the groomer confused, frustrated, or unsure what happened… this episode will bring clarity, compassion, and real solutions.

I missed you last week — but for the best reason! I was busy loving on more than 150 Doodle parents inside my Doodle Parent Challenge: Motivation Edition.
We spent the week talking about how to break the “Trust Fund Puppy” cycle and what really motivates our Doodles to listen. And wow… the breakthroughs were incredible!
In today’s episode, I’m taking you behind the scenes of my signature program, Zoomies to Zen™ — the only Doodle-specific training course designed to transform chaos into calm without fear, frustration, or force.
You’ll hear exactly what we do inside the six-week experience — from teaching Doodles to stop jumping and calm down on cue, to building focus, impulse control, and connection that lasts a lifetime.
I’m also sharing real success stories from Doodle parents like Rebecca, Nancy, and Anna who turned their wild, overstimulated doodles into calm, confident companions.
If you’ve ever thought, “I’ve tried everything and nothing works for my Doodle,” this episode is for you.

Do you secretly live with a “Trust Fund Puppy”—a super-social, super-smart Doodle who gets VIP access to people, places, and perks without offering even a tiny “please” first? In this episode, I explain what a Trust Fund Puppy is, why Doodles drift there, the real costs of letting it ride, and 10 red flags so you can spot the pattern fast. No fixes here—the how happens together inside the Doodle Parent Challenge — Motivation Edition (complimentary, starts Mon, Sept 30; birthday-week $500+ in prizes).

Optional: Take the 2-minute Trust Fund Puppy Quiz and bring your result to Day 1.
WHAT IS A “TRUST FUND PUPPY”? A friendly, much-loved dog who’s learned that access just… happens—doors open, guests pet, toys fly, walks proceed, couches include—without first offering a tiny bit of “please.” Benefits on tap; responsibilities, not so much. Zero-blame lens: your Doodle isn’t misbehaving—they’re following the pattern we accidentally taught.
THE 10 RED FLAGS (SELF-CHECK)
KEEP IN MIND • Feeling called out by #1 or #8 = good data, not shame
• Friendly can still be unsafe (door dashing, automatic greetings)
• You didn’t fail—you reinforced enthusiasm without guardrails
WHY DOODLES DRIFT HERE Bright + bouncy + people-loving = lightning-fast “access happens” learning; we reward charisma because it’s adorable; adolescence hardens patterns.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
There’s one simple, kind lever that flips “does what he wants” into “checks in first.” We’ll put it in your hand—and practice it—inside the Challenge.

In this episode of the Doodle Pro Podcast, I had the pleasure of speaking with Tonya Lim, the Doggy Doula™ at Family Pupz. Tonya specializes in helping families prepare their dogs for the arrival of a new baby. Here are some of the highlights from our conversation:
During the first trimester of pregnancy, Tonya suggests starting to think about what changes may need to be made to your dog's routine and behavior in order to prepare them for the new addition to the family. This could include introducing new commands or behaviors, such as teaching your dog to stay off of furniture or creating a designated space for them in the home.
In the second trimester, Tonya recommends focusing on helping your dog adjust to new equipment or changes in the home, such as baby gates or swings. It's important to anticipate potential behaviors that may be triggered by these changes, such as a dog becoming fixated on a moving swing, and work on training them to engage in alternate behaviors instead.
As the due date approaches, Tonya emphasizes the importance of creating a plan for the dog's care during labor and delivery, as well as for the first few weeks after the baby arrives. This could include having a friend or family member available to care for the dog, or arranging for them to stay at a boarding facility.
When it comes to introducing the dog to the new baby, Tonya suggests starting slowly and keeping the baby elevated and away from the dog's reach. It's important to closely monitor the dog's behavior and provide positive reinforcement for good behavior.
Throughout the entire process, Tonya emphasizes the importance of prioritizing the dog's emotional well-being and being aware of any signs of stress or anxiety. By planning ahead and taking steps to prepare your dog for the new addition to the family, you can help ensure a smooth transition for everyone involved.
If you're expecting a baby and need help preparing your dog, Tonya offers virtual doggy doula services through Family Pupz. Listeners of the Doodle Pro Podcast can receive a discount on consultations with the promo code THEDOODLEPRO.

Did you know that dog bites are amongst the most common form of injuries among children in the United States? As a dog trainer, I've seen firsthand how this can happen even in households with loving and well-behaved pets and children. That's why it's important for parents to be aware of the risks and take steps to keep their children safe.
During this episode, I was joined by Tanya Lim, a Doggy Doula at Family Pupz who specializes in working with expecting families and new parents to help prepare their dogs for the arrival of a new baby. Together, we discussed the importance of recognizing dog body language and understanding the potential risks associated with young children and dogs interacting.
One of the key takeaways from our discussion was that many dog bites actually occur in the home, and often involve a family pet that is familiar to the child. This can happen when children engage in behaviors that make the dog uncomfortable or when the dog is feeling stressed or overwhelmed. As parents, it's our responsibility to teach our children how to interact with dogs in a safe and respectful way.
Tanya and I also discussed the myth that certain breeds are more likely to bite than others. The truth is, any dog can bite under the right circumstances. That's why it's important to focus on individual dogs and their behavior, rather than making assumptions based on breed.
To help prevent dog bites, Tanya shared some of her tips for preparing dogs for the arrival of a new baby. This includes introducing the dog to baby-related sounds and smells, creating a safe space for the dog to retreat to, and setting boundaries for how the dog and child should interact. By taking these steps early on, parents can help ensure a smooth transition for everyone in the household.
Overall, this was an important conversation that I hope will help raise awareness about the risks of dog bites and the steps parents can take to keep their children safe. If you'd like to hear more from Tanya about her step-by-step plan for preparing dogs for a new baby, be sure to tune in to our next episode. And as always, don't forget to rate and review the show on your favorite podcast platform!

I recently had the fantastic opportunity to chat with the delightful Dr. Zazie Todd, an expert in dog psychology, canine behavior, and positive reinforcement dog training. Her enthusiasm for strengthening the bond between pets and their humans is genuinely infectious! She shares her wisdom on pet-friendly training methods, dog behavior science, and animal welfare in an engaging, supportive, and non-judgmental manner, truly believing that providing quality information can help people improve their relationships with their dogs and lead to happier lives for all.
Our conversation focused on the importance of acknowledging that dogs and other animals have emotions and are sentient beings. Dr. Todd's insightful book, "Wag: The Science of Making Your Dog Happy," offers practical advice for enhancing your dog's well-being and deepening your bond with them through evidence-based dog training techniques. We chatted about the significance of offering positive experiences for dogs and understanding the science behind their behavior.
We touched on the value of positive reinforcement in dog training, highlighting how it is essential to avoid aversive techniques. Our discussion also covered the development of the five domains model of animal welfare and the heartwarming connection between humans and their canine companions.
Dr. Todd emphasized the importance of using reward-based methods, like treat training, when working with dogs, noting that aversive techniques can have negative effects on a dog's welfare and the relationship between the dog and their guardian.
Throughout our conversation, we covered various topics, including understanding your dog's preferences for treats, addressing dogs with sensitive stomachs, and sharing tips for training outdoors. We also emphasized the significance of consistent practice in helping dogs become fluent in a behavior and the vital role that early socialization plays in a puppy's life.
Dr. Todd underscored the importance of socializing puppies during their sensitive period, even with vaccination concerns in mind. She mentioned that the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior recommends good puppy classes for puppies aged seven to eight weeks. These classes should provide positive experiences with a variety of people, animals, objects, and surfaces, helping puppies grow into friendly, happy, and confident adult dogs while preventing potential behavior issues.
In conclusion, my enlightening conversation with Dr. Zazie Todd shed light on the importance of understanding dog psychology, canine behavior, and adopting positive reinforcement dog training techniques to strengthen the bond between pets and their guardians. By providing positive experiences for dogs, acknowledging their emotions, and using reward-based training methods, we can contribute to their overall well-being and happiness. Let's embrace Dr. Todd's valuable insights and work together to create a happier, brighter future for our beloved furry companions, fostering a deeper connection and lifelong bond with our canine friends.

Learn more about the origin of anti-doodle bias and hate, the trends, and where I see Doodle mixes heading.
Understand what it's like for Doodle Parents who encounter this bias and learn what some of the issues groomers, breed purists, and trainers have with Doodles.
This episode is just one step closer to Bridging the Doodle Divide™.
Correction, 1/31/23, In this episode I used the colloquial meaning of hypoallergenic most perspective Doodle Parents use of being allergen-free. With that understanding, it's inaccurate to represent Doodles as being allergen-free. This is a common misunderstanding of poodles and poodle mixes. If using the scientific definition of hypoallergenic, meaning less likely to cause allergies, poodles and some doodle mixes do fit that definition. That is not what the general public usually understands that to mean, but it is the true definition.

In this part two of Corinne's conversation with Denver Paw School's owner and training manager, they to discuss why your doodle still continues to need training, even as an adolescent and an adult. Training and learning don't stop once they've finished one puppy socialization class.
That would be like your pulling your kid out after kindergarten and saying, "You've got your letters. You learned enough.""With my now teenager, if I stopped addressing his learning needs at kindergarten, and even if I just kept reinforcing that kindergarten level, he'd be great at knowing his letters.
But by raising the level of enrichment and stimulation and growth and connection by working on that training together, my dog and I are still growing and solidifying our connection together." - Corinne Gearhart
They discuss why that's so important and what's going on when you have an adolescent doodle that knew how to sit or go into a down stay or not pull on the leash... And suddenly it seems like they forgot it all.
What is going on? They're here to share with you and let you know. If you want to know how to find a great facility, great training program, or a solid trainer, listen to part one of this interview, Episode 13. There, Denver Paw School shares with people all over the world the red flags to look for, when to run, and what to feel great about when you find a facility or a training program
On this part 2 of our interview, the adolescent doodle questions will be addressed include:
- What is a dog's teenage phase?
- Is it normal for an adolescent dog to have increased reactivity, barking, jumping, biting, poor impulse control, or to stop listening?
- If they are more reactive or harder to control, should we stop socialization or going to public places?
- How do I find adolescent dog training classes near me?
- Why is my teenage dog driving me crazy and won't listen?
Sometimes there are doodles that struggle with overstimulation, like just absolutely over-aroused. Continuing on with socialization might be counterintuitive. But actually, if it's regimented and controlled in a way, I think that it can start to address some of those over-arousal situations." *- Kathy Thorpe
"And I think that's probably one of the biggest things with teenagers is that some days they're like... super responsive and responding to every cue and look like a model citizen and they look like an adult dog. And then yes, the next day it's like, where did that dog go? And it's all the rewiring, the brain is under construction." - Colleen Tekamp*Chapters:-3:47 Working with adolescent doodles

This episode is great for doodle puppy parents and parents of adult and teenage doodles alike. The advice on selecting a quality, science-based program or trainer is helpful to all doodle parents at every stage!
Have you heard you should join a puppy class or that they need socialization, but don't know what that means, when you should start, or how to tell if it's a good one? This interview with top training facility Denver Paw School's Kathy Thorpe and Colleen Tekamp helps you learn what happens in puppy class, is puppy training class necessary, how long it takes, and the best time to start puppy socialization.
"You have to balance the safety of your puppy with the development of their personality and their ability to take on what they will be exposed to throughout their entire life."
- Kathy Thorpe, Owner of Denver Paw School
Questions answered include:
- What is puppy kindergarten?
- What do good puppy classes cover?
- When should puppy training start?
- Where to get puppy training classes?
- Where to train puppies?
- How to approach puppy training at 8 weeks old?
- The best age to start puppy kindergarten?
- Is puppy training worth it?
- Is starting training at 4 or 6 months too late?
"We absolutely do not follow the same old school child rearing because we've grown so much as a culture. And the same holds true for dog training."
- Kathy Thorpe, Owner of Denver Paw School
Don't take your chances with any trainer or facility in the neighborhood and risk damage that might take years or a lifetime to undo. Feel confident about your choice and your commitment to your puppy's development.
"Even 20, 30 years ago, they were really just in the backyard or, in the neighborhood or maybe got to ride in the car to take the kids to school. But now your dog is almost a fixture everywhere you're going and traveling... So we have to add that extra time to really give them a solid foundation of being calm and okay and happy in that variety and that socialization window is just your, best opportunity to do it."
- Colleen Tekamp, Training Manager for Denver Paw School
