In this enlightening episode, we dive into the critical importance of developing self-reflection skills in the field of psychology. Our discussion is structured around several key themes that are essential for both current and prospective psychology students, as well as practicing psychologists. We explore how psychologists can apply their knowledge and skills in a manner that is reflexive, culturally appropriate, and sensitive to the diversity of individuals. This involves a deep understanding of cultural contexts and the ability to adapt practices to meet the unique needs of diverse populations.

The episode highlights the significance of strong interpersonal skills and effective teamwork in the practice of psychology. We discuss strategies for improving these skills and the impact they have on client outcomes and professional collaborations. We provide an in-depth look at Gibbs' Reflective Cycle, developed by Graham Gibbs in 1988. This framework offers a structured approach to learning from experiences through six stages: Description, Feelings, Evaluation, Analysis, Conclusion, and Action Plan. We discuss how this cycle can be used to enhance self-reflection and continuous improvement in professional practice

Our conversation covers the inherent requirements necessary for successfully completing a psychology program. These requirements span eight domains: ethical behaviour, behavioural stability, legal compliance, communication, cognition, relational skills, reflective skills, and sustainable performance. We emphasise the importance of these skills, values, and behaviours in ensuring the safety and wellbeing of both the practitioner and their clients.

Tune in to this episode for a comprehensive discussion on the need to develop a skill of self-reflection and its vital role in the practice of psychology. Whether you're a student, a practicing psychologist, or simply interested in the field, this episode offers valuable insights and practical advice on enhancing your reflective practice.

The podcast will now feature a series of mindfulness meditations. The second is attributed to "letting go of thoughts and emotions" and "bring awareness back into the present". The combination of these to activities, when practiced frequently, will allow you to develop a capability of 'letting go'.  The meditation was created by me.

I hope you enjoy, letting go mindfully.

In this special guest episode I speak with Chisholm Institute's Dean of Higher Education Ben Allitt. Ben is a higher education professional looking to provide the best educational opportunities to students in the South East of Melbourne and beyond. Interested in pathways from vocational education to degrees and offering education to students who are passionate about their careers and communities. Ben shares his experience of his psychology journey outlining that it is not always a straight-line from inception of education to registration as a practitioner. Chisholm Institute is the first to have an Australian Psychology Accreditation Council accredited Bachelor of Psychology degree accepting people directly into 2nd year with a Diploma degree. Indeed, it can be any Diploma degree.

Chisholm’s Psychology programs combine the work-ready elements of diplomas with the research, statistical and theoretical understanding of psychology. Chisholm Psychology conforms to the Pathway Degree model developed within the Higher Education College. In this manner, it delivers steps two and three of a three phased program with phase one consisting of a diploma. Each of the degree phases are associated with both specific Course Learning Outcomes and broader Chisholm Graduate Attributes.

Wondering what to do about registration as a psychologist now that the 4+2 pathway has been retired/cancelled?  Let Dr Paul provide you the insights into the reason why the pathway was retired and what your options are now.  You will need to choose an alternative pathway to general registration such as the 5+1 internship pathway or the higher degree pathway. These pathways take the same time to complete as the 4+2 internship - they all take six years from the beginning to the end of training. An online search is available for all approved programs of study.
