Remember that weird 'S' symbol that we all used to draw on our desks in high school? It was an experience shared by a group of people who all grew up in the 90's and early 2000s. We came after Generation X. We came at the tale end of Generation Y. We are Generation S, and if you have memories of growing up at the turn of the 21st century, this podcast is for you. It's a nostalgic look back, not only at popular books, movies, TV shows and the like, but also experiences that we may not have realized were shared by countless others around the world, like the feeling you had before your first school dance, or how your parents let you have cereal for dinner.

This week on Backwards Compatible, we’re cracking open the panels of Comix Zone for the Sega Genesis—a visually striking, brutally difficult beat-’em-up that dropped in July 1995.
Lou and I talk through the game’s unique comic book aesthetic, its place in mid-’90s gaming, and why it still stands out nearly 30 years later. We get into what made it so innovative, what held it back from getting a sequel, and whether it’s due for a modern-day revival.
Plus: we talk broader ideas around reviving dead franchises, adapting comics into games, and how graphics evolution shaped the '90s. If you ever felt like you were literally inside a comic book, this one’s for you.

This week, Lou and I jump off the top rope and into the wonderfully weird world of WrestleMania: The Arcade Game—Midway’s over-the-top, digitized brawler that mashed Mortal Kombat with the WWF’s New Generation Era.
But that’s not all. This episode is a bit of a wrestling grab bag (hey, I’m still getting over a cold, cut me some slack!):
🕹️ We review WrestleMania: The Arcade Game – Is it a legit classic or just a button-mashing curiosity?
🎮 A quick look at WWF In Your House on PS1 – the weird, clearly inferior sequel you probably forgot existed.
🤼 We also get into WrestleMania 41 hype, our thoughts on the New Generation Era of wrestling (hello neon and Lex Express!).
It's chaotic, nostalgic, and full of bad Vince McMahon impressions.

In episode 34 of Backwards Compatible, we kick off 2025 with a slapshot into the world of NHL Hitz 2003! Admittedly, I got my wires crossed at the start and thought we were covering Hitz 2002 instead—leading to a scramble to redo my notes mid-show—but everything came together in the end for an epic discussion.
Lou and I dive into what made NHL Hitz 2003 a standout arcade sports title, from its over-the-top action to its perfect balance of chaos and hockey fundamentals. We also take a broader look at the state of the NHL in the early 2000s, with a generation of legendary players like Brian Leetch and Mark Messier nearing the end of their careers, but still making their presence felt in this game.
The episode wouldn't be complete without revisiting our favorite ongoing debate: arcade sports games vs. simulation games. While Lou appreciates the depth of sims, I remain firmly on Team Arcade, and NHL Hitz 2003 is the perfect example of why. It’s fast, fun, and doesn’t take itself too seriously—exactly how I like my sports games.
So grab your controller, lace up your skates, and join us as we break down one of the most exciting hockey games ever made!

In episode 33 of Backwards Compatible, Lou and I dive deep into Star Wars: Republic Commando for the original Xbox. Released in 2005, this game bridged the gap between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, serving as a perfect tie-in to the Star Wars saga during a time when fans were eagerly anticipating the final chapter of the prequel trilogy. It also came on the heels of the Clone Wars animated series, making it an exciting addition to the Star Wars canon.
We break down what makes Republic Commando a standout title—especially on the original Xbox. Often hailed as a hidden gem (or simply a masterpiece if you’re a Star Wars fan), this game blends tight controls with an immersive atmosphere that feels quintessentially Star Wars. The squad mechanics were ahead of their time, and the witty banter from your clone trooper squadmates added both personality and levity to the intense missions.
From its immersive environments to its perfectly balanced mix of action and strategy, Republic Commando nails what it means to be part of the Star Wars universe. So grab your blaster, prep your squad, and buckle up for a deep dive into one of the best Star Wars games ever made!

In episode 30 of "Backwards Compatible," my good buddy Odian Levy fills in for Lou to discuss a classic from our childhood, "Maximum Carnage" on both the Genesis and SNES. Odian, a dedicated Spider-Man fan (make sure you check out one of our older episodes where he and I discuss the Tobey Maguire Trilogy: https://generations.buzzsprout.com/2024899/episodes/14282630-tobey-maguire-s-spider-man-part1-with-great-power), was eager to dive into the deep cuts of the "Maximum Carnage" storyline, exploring how the game translated the intense narrative and character dynamics of the comics into a thrilling beat 'em up experience.
During our discussion, we highlight a particular aspect that both fascinated and frustrated gamers: the game’s notorious difficulty. "Maximum Carnage" is known for its punishing challenges, and despite numerous attempts, neither Odian nor I have ever managed to beat the game. This difficulty level adds a layer of infamous prestige to our memories and experiences with the game.
We also discuss how both the Genesis and SNES versions provided a nearly identical gameplay experience—a rarity for titles released across these two platforms at the time. This consistency allowed players on both systems to equally enjoy the rich, comic book-inspired graphics and the dynamic, action-packed gameplay.
As we wrap up the episode, Odian shares insights into the game’s adherence to the comic series and takes a playful guess at who the WWF Champion was in September 1994, when "Maximum Carnage" was released. Join us for this special episode as we revisit one of the most challenging and iconic Spider-Man games of the 90s.

In episode 29 of "Backwards Compatible," we’re gearing up for the spooky season with a deep dive into the notorious "Friday the 13th" on NES. This game has often been maligned in the gaming community, a sentiment that was amplified by the Angry Video Game Nerd's scathing review nearly two decades ago. However, I have a personal history with this game—it's one of my favorite NES titles, and I'm excited to share a different perspective on it.
Throughout this episode, Lou and I explore the unique aspects of "Friday the 13th," from its ambitious attempt to translate a horror movie franchise into an 8-bit video game to its notoriously challenging gameplay. We discuss why this game has been both criticized and misunderstood, and I aim to set the record straight on some of its more controversial elements.
As we dissect the game's mechanics and its eerie atmosphere, I’ll share why "Friday the 13th" holds a special place in my gaming collection despite its infamous reputation. And for those brave enough to tackle Camp Crystal Lake themselves, stick around until the end of the episode. I’ll be sharing 13 essential tips on how to beat this game—yes, contrary to popular belief, it is indeed beatable. The game captured the essence of the James Bond films with its intricate missions and stealth gameplay, offering an immersive experience that was revolutionary at the time.

In episode 24 of "Backwards Compatible," Lou and I jump into the vibrant and uproarious world of "The Simpsons Arcade Game." This game not only stands as a cherished classic from the arcade heydays but also ranks as one of the best Simpsons-themed games ever, with only "The Simpsons: Hit & Run" giving it a run for its money. Released in the early '90s, this game hit arcades just as "The Simpsons" TV show was exploding in popularity, becoming a cultural phenomenon that would define comedy and satire for decades.
While "The Simpsons Arcade Game" might be considered basic in terms of beat 'em up mechanics, its execution is anything but. We discuss how its straightforward gameplay, infused with the show's trademark humor and iconic characters, offered fans a uniquely Simpsons-esque experience. In episode 23 of "Backwards Compatible," Lou and I dive into the high-energy, hard-hitting world of "NFL Blitz 2000" on the Sega Dreamcast. This title, developed by Midway—the same studio famous for the bone-crunching action of "Mortal Kombat"—brings a similar intensity to the arcade-style sports gaming arena. It's no wonder the tackles feel like fatalities, and the gameplay is as over-the-top as Johnny Cage uppercutting off his opponent's head.
We explore how "NFL Blitz 2000" epitomizes Sega's knack for delivering exceptional sports games, with its advanced graphics and smooth gameplay that decisively outperformed its counterparts on the PlayStation 1 and Nintendo 64. The Dreamcast's capabilities allowed Midway to fully unleash their creative flair, resulting in a game that was not just about football but about creating an exhilarating spectacle that mirrored the drama and brutality often found in a fighting arena.
Join us as we discuss why "NFL Blitz 2000" remains a standout title and how the Sega Dreamcast became a critical platform for sports titles, thanks to games like this that pushed the envelope in game presentation and mechanics. We'll delve into Midway’s legacy of high-impact gaming that transcends genres, proving that whether it's the digital gridiron or the combat arena, they knew how to keep players on the edge of their seats. We reminisce about those carefree days mixing pool fun with intense kart racing sessions, where friendships were tested on the treacherous turns of DK's Jungle Parkway.

In episode 21 of "Backwards Compatible," Lou and I dive into the brutal world of "Mortal Kombat," focusing on the Sega Genesis version, which many fans consider superior to its counterparts. This game not only sparked controversy with its hyper-violent content but also set a new standard for realism in fighting games with its digitized graphics that captured lifelike movements.
We compare the Sega Genesis version of "Mortal Kombat" with the SNES and arcade versions, noting how the Genesis version retained the infamous blood and fatalities that were significantly toned down on the SNES. This distinction was pivotal, as it influenced the game's reception and legacy, cementing the Genesis version as the definitive home console experience for many gamers seeking the full, unadulterated "Mortal Kombat" experience.
Beyond just reviewing the game, we discuss the broader impact of the "Mortal Kombat" franchise on the fighting game genre. From introducing the ESRB rating system due to its graphic content to pioneering high-fidelity character animation, "Mortal Kombat" has left an indelible mark on the landscape of video games. It challenged developers and the industry at large to push boundaries—both in terms of technology and content regulation.

In episode 20 of "Backwards Compatible," Lou and I take a swing at "Wii Sports," the game that came bundled with the Nintendo Wii and became a cultural phenomenon. Released in November 2006, "Wii Sports" was not just a game but a pivotal moment for Nintendo, potentially even rescuing the company from the brink after the less successful GameCube era. This title introduced motion-controlled gaming to the masses, making video games accessible and appealing to an unprecedented broad audience, from young children to seniors.
We dive into how "Wii Sports" and the Wii console set a new standard for interactive gaming, emphasizing physical movement and family-friendly fun. This approach not only defined the Wii's legacy but also influenced Nintendo’s future direction, focusing on innovation in gameplay over raw hardware power. The Wii's success demonstrated Nintendo's ability to think outside traditional gaming paradigms and reinvigorate its brand in a highly competitive market.
Beyond our discussion of "Wii Sports" itself, we explore the broader impact of the Wii console, discussing how its emphasis on inclusivity and accessibility changed the gaming landscape forever. In episode 19 of "Backwards Compatible," we're finally back on track, and it's a big one! Lou and I delve into the frenetic world of "X-Men vs. Street Fighter," a game that brought together two powerhouse universes in an arcade classic. Released in arcades in September 1996, we argue that this version remains the definitive experience, thanks to its smooth gameplay and innovative tag battle system that set a new standard for fighting games.
We explore how "X-Men vs. Street Fighter" laid the groundwork for future titles, contrasting the high points of the Marvel vs. Capcom series—particularly "MvC 1 and 2"—with the less celebrated entries like "MvC 3" and "MvC Infinite." Our discussion pinpoints what makes some iterations in this crossover saga resonate more with fans than others, emphasizing gameplay mechanics, character rosters, and the overall balance of action.
Additionally, we veer into a spirited sidetrack conversation about the appeal of simulation sports games versus more arcade-like sports games such as "NFL Blitz." This divergence offers a fun exploration of what draws players to different types of gaming experiences within the same genre.
And as a special treat, we also provide our thoughts on the newly released "Deadpool and Wolverine" movie, diving into how these beloved characters are portrayed and how the film fits into the larger Marvel cinematic universe.

In episode 18 of "Backwards Compatible" (I say 19 in the recording, because I was planning on putting this one out next week), scheduling twists continue as we pivot once again from our planned discussion on "X-Men vs. Street Fighter" due to some last-minute conflicts. Instead, an old friend, Wil, joins me to revisit a cornerstone of my gaming history—Tekken 3. Released for the PlayStation 1 and in arcades, Tekken 3 wasn't just another entry in the fighting game genre; it was my first real introduction to the Tekken franchise, and what an introduction it was!
Wil and I dive deep into what made Tekken 3 such a pivotal game. Renowned for its fluid animations, improved graphics, and expanded roster, Tekken 3 brought a new level of depth and strategy to the 3D fighting scene. We discuss our favorite characters, memorable combos, and how the game's dynamic music and detailed backgrounds contributed to its immersive experience. In this week’s episode of "Backwards Compatible," we’ve encountered a bit of an unexpected hiccup. Lou and I were all set to dive into the arcade classic "X-Men vs. Street Fighter," covering its iterations on Arcade, Sega Saturn, and PS1. Unfortunately, we ran into a major technical snag—the audio files from our recording session were corrupted. We didn't have the opportunity to re-record this week, so we've decided to push this discussion to next week’s episode. In episode 16 of "Backwards Compatible," Lou and I tackle "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie - The Game" for the Sega Genesis. This Genesis version stands out as the superior iteration compared to its Game Gear and SNES counterparts, largely because of its enhanced co-op battles, more content directly tied to the movie, and a tighter storyline that aligns closely with the MMPR TV show.
We dive deep into why this Genesis version excels, from its gameplay mechanics to the stellar soundtrack, which is a phenomenal Genesis rendition of the original score by Ron Wassermann—known for his iconic work on the "X-Men" animated series theme. The music perfectly captures the energy and excitement of the Power Rangers universe, adding an extra layer of nostalgia and adrenaline to every battle.
Additionally, we revisit the 1995 "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" movie, discussing the standout characters like Ivan Ooze and expressing our bewilderment over why these characters haven't been more prominently featured in subsequent series and merchandise. We also recommend a few modern beat 'em ups and Power Rangers games that successfully recapture the spirit of classic Power Rangers action for those looking to relive the excitement or introduce it to a new generation.
As always, we round out the episode with a look at pop culture milestones from August 1995, setting the scene for when the Power Rangers were at the height of their popularity. Join Lou and me as we morph back to a time when spandex and giant robots ruled the afternoon TV slots and the Sega Genesis was the console of choice for Power Rangers fans.

In episode 15 of "Backwards Compatible", Lou is back in the studio with me, as we swing into the jungles of "Donkey Kong Country" on the SNES, released in November of 1994. I first encountered this game as a rental at a friend’s house—the same friend whose "Super Mario World" save file I unfortunately erased (sorry, Dane!). Revisiting it now, the game stands out for its exceptional level design, arguably among the best for side-scrolling platformers. Its gameplay mechanics, inspired by Mario’s run button and Sonic’s rhythmic precision, showcase the unique platforming challenges that set "Donkey Kong Country" apart.
Developed by the acclaimed studio Rare and published by Nintendo, "Donkey Kong Country" was one of the first major titles to utilize pre-rendered 3D graphics, created on Silicon Graphics workstations. This innovative approach resulted in some of the most detailed and realistic visuals on the SNES. The game also boasted a memorable soundtrack by David Wise, Eveline Fischer, and Robin Beanland, with tracks like "Aquatic Ambience" and "Gang-Plank Galleon" that are still celebrated today. Despite my burning hatred for the minecart levels, the game’s commercial success and critical acclaim are undeniable. It revitalized the Donkey Kong franchise and established Rare as a powerhouse that would go on to create other hits like "Banjo Kazooie" and "Killer Instinct."
As we explore "Donkey Kong Country's" development, graphical breakthroughs, and gameplay, we also reflect on the pop culture milestones of 1994, setting the scene for when this groundbreaking game first captivated players around the world. Join Lou and me as we delve into the legacy of a game that not only defined an era but also continues to influence the platforming genre across gaming generations.

In episode 14 of "Backwards Compatible: A Generation 'S' Podcast," my good friend Derek Taylor joins me as Lou takes the night off. Together, we delve into the stealthy world of "Metal Gear Solid," released in September 1998. A groundbreaking title on the PlayStation, "Metal Gear Solid" wasn't just a game; it was a cinematic journey, marking my first experience with a two-disc game. I remember my initial approach was all wrong—I tried to beat up all the enemies, only to realize hand-to-hand combat wasn't going to cut it. This challenge was what sparked my love for stealth games.
We discuss the emotional and cinematic impact of the game, reminiscing about the innovative fourth wall breaks, like having to switch controller ports to defeat Psycho Mantis and his eerie ability to "read" your memory card. Set in the desolate backdrop of Alaska, the game's atmosphere was thick with tension, complemented by humorous touches like Snake’s almost pointless cigarette smoking. We also talk about the voice acting, particularly Cam Clarke's memorable performance as Liquid Snake, as well as the different endings, influenced by player choices during Ocelot's torture scene, added depth and replayability, affecting whether Meryl lived or died—and consequently, whether you received infinite ammo or stealth camouflage for your next playthrough.
And as always, we wrap up with a few pop culture facts from September 1998, providing a glimpse into the world when "Metal Gear Solid" stealthily revolutionized the gaming landscape. Join Derek and me as we revisit this iconic game that blends stealth, action, and story in ways that still influence gaming today.

We hit Episode 10! In this episode of "Backwards Compatible: A Generation 'S' Podcast," Lou and I heat up the arcade sports scene with "NBA Jam" and its successor, "NBA Jam - Tournament Edition," primarily focusing on the Sega Genesis versions while touching on differences across other consoles. We dive into the pivotal updates and key differences introduced in the Tournament Edition, such as additional players and enhanced gameplay features, which solidified its status as an arcade legend.
"NBA Jam" broke ground by bridging the gap between casual sports fans who were hardcore gamers and casual gamers who were hardcore sports fans, particularly during an era when NBA popularity was soaring with the Chicago Bulls' dominance. Despite its massive success, the absence of prominent players like Michael Jordan and Shaq due to licensing restrictions remains a notable aspect of its history. In the epic conclusion of our 3-part retrospective on the Sam Raimi Spider-Man saga, Odian Levy and I return for one final web-slinging adventure into "Spider-Man 3." As the closing chapter of a trilogy that captivated a generation, this film brought a tumultuous yet heartfelt ending to the story of Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker.
Under Sam Raimi's visionary direction, "Spider-Man 3" presented a narrative brimming with complexity and controversy. Released over fifteen years ago, it left a distinct impression on both Odian and myself, challenging our expectations of superhero narratives. The film's ambitious attempt to weave multiple storylines and introduce iconic characters like Venom and Sandman has been a topic of much debate among fans and critics alike.
In this episode, we delve into the intricate web of "Spider-Man 3," exploring its narrative choices, character developments, and the emotional weight carried by Peter Parker as he confronts his darkest challenges yet. We analyze the portrayal of heroism and villainy, examining how the movie navigates themes of forgiveness, identity, and the consequences of power and revenge.
As we've done throughout this series, Odian and I share our personal reflections on the film, including how our perceptions have evolved over time. We discuss the broader impact of the trilogy on the superhero genre and its legacy in shaping the cinematic landscape.
So join us as we swing into the heart of "Spider-Man 3" – a film that, despite its polarizing reception, holds a special place in our journey through the world of Spider-Man. It's not just a conclusion to a beloved trilogy, but a testament to the enduring complexity and appeal of one of the most iconic superheroes in cinema.

In the second installment of our 3-part look back at the Sam Raimi Spider-Man saga, I team up once again with Odian Levy, the soon-to-be best-selling author behind "Hummingbird," to dissect what is widely hailed as the pinnacle of superhero cinema: Spider-Man 2. This sequel didn't just raise the stakes; it set a new gold standard for what superhero movies could be, intertwining heart-pounding action with the all-too-human drama of balancing life's competing demands.
Directed by the horror maestro Sam Raimi, Spider-Man 2 burst onto the scene over twenty years ago, leaving an indelible mark on both Odian and myself. Its blend of thrilling action, deep emotional resonance, and groundbreaking visual effects not only redefined the genre but also resonated with us on a personal level, etching vivid memories of our first viewings (and in Odian's case, the numerous repeat viewings in theaters).
This episode dives deep into the rich tapestry of Spider-Man 2, exploring how Peter Parker's juggling act between his duties as a student, photographer, friend, and masked vigilante strikes a chord with anyone who's ever struggled to find balance in their life. We peel back the layers of this cinematic gem, discussing its complex characters, innovative visuals, and the compelling narrative that elevates it from a mere superhero flick to a cinematic tour de force.
As always, we sprinkle in anecdotes of our own experiences with the film and wax nostalgic about our enduring love for everything Spider-Man – from the comics and video games to the beloved 90s animated series.
So kick back, relax, and join us on this journey through Spider-Man 2 – a film that not only epitomizes the thrill and burden of great power and great responsibility but also continues to swing high as a beacon in superhero storytelling.

In part 1 of our 3-part retrospective discussion on the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies, I'm joined by future best-selling author, Odian Levy (author of Hummingbird, which you can check out here), as we dive deep and dissect what many consider to be the true kick-off point to modern superhero movies, and the reason that we have the vast superhero-centric cinematic universes that we do today (for better and for worse, mind you).
Directed by Sam Raimi, who, at the time, was mostly known for his works in the horror genre (including the Evil Dead films), Spider-Man was released in theaters over TWENTY years ago, in the summer of 2002. Yep...it's been that long.
This was a film that, for me, and for Odian, had such an impact on us, with vivid memories of seeing it for the first time (plus Odian reveals just how many times he actually went to see it in theaters).
We also kicked things off by sharing our love of our favorite friendly neighborhood hero, including the comics, the video games, and of course, the wildly successful animated series from the 90s.
There's a lot to cover in this one, and I think we did a pretty good job. So kick back, relax, and enjoy hearing all about what happens when you have great power, and great responsibility.

Happy New Year! We're kicking off 2024 with a discussion on the BEST-SELLING video game console of all time, and it's not even close. A few weeks back, Lou and I had a great conversation all about the original Sony Playstation, and this time around, we're talking about the all-around glow up that was the Playstation 2, along with my buddy Derek.
This was a console that was near and dear to all three of us (and was in fact the first console that I purchased with my own money), so we start off going through some of the first games we owned, and then talk about some of the crazy accessories, including funky controllers, the infamous PS2 Network Adapter to play online and the multi-tap that allowed for up to 8 players at a time.
We then dove into some listener feedback on their favorite PS2 games, and finally wrap things up with a look back at the Top 20 PS2 games of all time, from a sales perspective.
I couldn't think of a better way to kickstart the New Year, so kick back and enjoy!

This week, we interrupt your regularly scheduled broadcast of Generation 'S' for a good ole' fashioned CROSSOVER episode! A few weeks back, I had the privelege of joining Sean and Ty on the Whiskeylodeon podcast, which combines two of my favorite things on this planet: booze and cartoons. You may in fact remember Ty from some previous episodes of this podcast, and so I finally had the chance to return the favor, and talk some old school Nickelodeon.
This time around, we covered one of my favorite episodes of Are You Afraid of the Dark, as well as the pilot episode of a COMPLETELY forgotten gem from the early 2000s, The Journey of Allen Strange.
It's a bit of longer episode, but it's because we had SO MUCH FUN. Hopefully it comes through in our episode, so kick back and enjoy!

In the world of gaming consoles, before hyper-realistic graphics, but after charming 2-D pixel graphics, there existed a charmingly ugly era of gaming in the mid 90s. It was the start of 3-D graphics in video games, with the release of consoles like the Nintendo 64 (which we have discussed here on the podcast in a past episode), and console that is the focal point of today's episode; the Sony Playstation.
Lou and I kick off this week's episode by reflecting on the unique magic that was the Playstation, from it's iconic (and goosebump-inducing) startup sound to the vast amount of games you could try out on those amazing demo discs you got out of gaming magazines (or from your local Pizza Hut, if you were lucky).

It's week 2 of the spooky season, so what better time to discuss one of the greatest Halloween films of all time, Hocus Pocus? Well, that's exactly what Beth and I do in this week's episode of Generation 'S'.
So funnily enough, I didn't know until about 15 minutes before recording that Beth NEVER watched the movie in its entirety as a kid, whereas I watched it without fail every year when it aired on the Disney channel. So, our nostalgia for this film is certainly at different levels, but we had a great time discussing the film, its themes, the vibes, the characters, etc. We do also briefly discuss the second film, and whether or not it holds a (black flame) candle to the original.
We also had a chance to dive a little deeper on some of our own personal Halloween memories, including our best (and worst) costumes from childhood, as well as the greatest (and nastiest) Halloween candy ever produced.

In this episode of Generation 'S', we embark on a delightful journey back to the 90s, a time when movie rental stores like Blockbuster held a special place in our hearts. Join us as we relive the golden era of movie rental culture and explore the rise, fall, and lasting impact of these iconic establishments.
We kick off the show by setting the stage for the 90s – a time before streaming services dominated our screens. The episode dives deep into the birth of Blockbuster, tracing its origins from a single store to a nationwide sensation that defined an era. We also reminisce about other key players in the movie rental scene, such as Hollywood Video and Family Video, highlighting the unique experiences each store offered.
The heart of the episode takes us through the Blockbuster experience itself. We paint a vivid picture of the store's signature blue and yellow design, neon lights, and rows upon rows of VHS tapes that beckoned to be explored. Remember those Friday nights dedicated to finding the perfect movie for the weekend? We take a trip down memory lane to the days when membership cards were prized possessions, and late fees were the dreaded reminders of the passing time.
As the episode unfolds, we explore the digital disruption that eventually led to the decline of these beloved rental stores. The rise of DVDs and the advent of Netflix's groundbreaking DVD-by-mail service marked a turning point in the industry. We delve into how Netflix's innovative approach revolutionized the way we consumed content and discuss the various factors that contributed to Blockbuster's downfall.
However, even as we bid farewell to the era of movie rental stores, their legacy lives on in our collective memory. We reflect on the nostalgia that continues to surround these stores and share stories of collectors who treasure vintage VHS tapes and Blockbuster memorabilia. Drawing parallels between the analog experience of browsing store aisles and the modern convenience of algorithm-driven streaming, we ponder how technology has changed our entertainment consumption habits.
The episode concludes with a heartwarming segment where we read out listener-submitted stories and answer questions about the cultural impact and behind-the-scenes stories of movie rental stores. From fond memories to cherished anecdotes, our listeners offer a firsthand account of the role these stores played in shaping their 90s upbringing.

With Father's Day just around the corner, what better time than now to delve into the beloved world of 90's TV and pay homage to the unforgettable TV dads who stole our hearts or left us cringing with their parenting skills. In this special episode, I'm joined by Ty (from the Whiskeylodeon Podcast) to explore the best (and worst) examples of both live-action and animated dads, reminding you of the moments that made us laugh, cry, and cheer.
In the 90s, our living rooms were transformed into warm and cozy sanctuaries, where iconic dads would grace our screens with their unique personalities and quirks. From the classic family sitcoms like "Full House" and "Home Improvement" to the animated gems like "The Simpsons" and "Hey Arnold!," this decade gave birth to a multitude of paternal figures who shaped our understanding of what it meant to be a dad.
In the first half of the podcast, we'll dive into the best TV dads of the 90s. We'll reminisce about the heartwarming wisdom of Danny Tanner (Bob Saget) in "Full House" and the endearing clumsiness of Tim "The Tool Man" Taylor (Tim Allen) in "Home Improvement." We'll also explore the animated realm, where the lovable Homer Simpson and his iconic catchphrases became synonymous with fatherhood.
But no era is perfect, and the second half of our episode will uncover the cringeworthy moments and questionable parenting decisions made by some TV dads of the 90s. We'll examine the misguided guidance of Al Bundy (Ed O'Neill) in "Married... with Children" and the perplexing choices made by Stu Pickles in "Rugrats." While these dads may not have always been the best role models, they left an indelible mark on the television landscape.
Join us as we dissect the complex characters, hilarious mishaps, and heartfelt moments that made the TV dads of the 90s so unforgettable. We'll discuss the impact they had on popular culture and the enduring lessons we learned from them, both good and bad. Whether you were a fan of the heartwarming sitcoms or the irreverent animated comedies, this podcast episode promises to bring back the nostalgia and leave you reflecting on the legacy of the best (and worst) TV dads of the 90s.
Join us on a journey through the laughter, the tears, and the unforgettable moments that made the TV dads of the 90s legends in their own right.

Join Lou and I in a sort of spiritual sequel to the VERY first episode of the podcast! This time, we are on a journey back to the early 2000s, a time when professional wrestling experienced monumental shifts and witnessed the rise and fall of iconic promotions. In this episode, we delve into the demise of WCW, the end of ECW, the birth of TNA, and the explosion of wrestling video games between 2000 and 2008.
We begin by examining the downfall of World Championship Wrestling (WCW), once a titan in the industry. Mismanagement, creative issues, and financial struggles ultimately led to WCW's demise. We reflect on the final episode of WCW Monday Nitro, which left an indelible mark on wrestling history.
Moving on, we explore the passionate and rebellious spirit of Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) and the factors that contributed to its eventual bankruptcy. ECW's "Guilty as Charged" pay-per-view serves as a poignant farewell to a groundbreaking promotion that forever changed the landscape of professional wrestling.
Amidst the chaos, a new era dawns with the rise of Total Nonstop Action (TNA) Wrestling. We trace TNA's journey from its early days, characterized by a unique format and a roster of talented performers who helped establish the promotion as a credible alternative for wrestling fans.
The episode also takes a deep dive into the world of wrestling video games during this era. We discuss beloved titles like the WWE SmackDown! series, WCW/nWo Revenge, and Fire Pro Wrestling, reminiscing about favorite features and unforgettable moments. These games provided an immersive experience for wrestling enthusiasts and paved the way for advancements in online multiplayer modes, expanded rosters, and improved graphics.
The early 2000s were a pivotal period for professional wrestling, marked by the end of WCW and ECW, the rise of TNA, and the evolution of wrestling video games. The term 'classic' can be applied to so many things; cars, music, movies, TV shows, and of course, video games. And speaking of video games, no other console deserves the title of 'classic' more than the Nintendo Entertainment System, which, by the way, came out almost FORTY years ago (in case you wanted to feel old for a moment).
Nintendo was a HUGE part of my life growing up, and is the reason I still play video games to this day. So, for the entire month of March, in honor of Mario Day ('Mar10' -- get it?), we're going to dive a little deeper on the Nintendo Consoles from our childhood (and yours too, most likely), starting with the Nintendo Entertainment System.

Awhile back, I released a couple of Goosebumps episode with my buddy, Dan Vorbeck. Goosebumps books were such a big part of our lives for a good portion of our childhood, but not just for the stories themselves. Don't get me wrong, R.L. Stine definitely had a knack for creeping out young adults, but what made the books even better was the artwork on the cover. Time and time again, I would flip back to the front of the book to admire it, and then resume whatever chapter I was on. Whether it was the details in the texture of the Haunted Mask, or the sheen on the face of Slappy the Dummy, the artwork of every Goosebumps book was top notch.
So at the end of 2022, when I had the opportunity to interview the illustrator of all of the original Goosebumps books, Tim Jacobus, you KNOW I couldn't resist. We had a great conversation just before the holidays, and I am so excited to finally be able to share that conversation with you, right here, on Generation 'S'.

So let's take it back about 20 years. It's the early 2000s, and high school dances are all the rage. From homecoming to winter formals, these events were the highlight of the school year. Kids would gather in the school gym, either ready to bust out moves they saw on The Wade Robson Project (remember that show?), or just stand in a corner with their friends, judging everybody else.
The DJ was playing songs that were a mix of classic hits from the '80s and '90s, along with the latest pop and hip-hop tracks.
And before we even got to the dance, ladies you might have spent hours getting ready, experimenting with different hairstyles and makeup looks, all of which usually involved body glitter. Fellas, let's be honest, we usually kept it simple, maybe a t-shirt and jeans, unless the occasion called for something a little more polished.
And let's not forget about slow dances, which were a crucial moment for someone to make their move on someone they were totally crushing on. And as the night drew to a close, we'd all head home, exhausted but happy, with memories that would last a lifetime.
So kick back and enjoy as Beth and I reminisce about our experience with school dances in the early 2000s!

In the 90s, and early 2000s, there was a genre of film that took the world by storm. These movies could make you laugh AND make you cry, all in the span of about 90 minutes. They laid the foundation for what every person wanted to strive for in a relationship with their significant others, for better or for worse.
And if you haven't figured it out yet, based on the title of the episode, I'll tell it to you straight. Romantic Comedy movies (aka Rom-Com) that rose to prominence over 30 years ago, and then fizzled out in the late 2000s. But for a period of about 15 years, The Rom Com was King. So this may, or may not, come as a shock to you, but growing up, I was never a big fan of sports, either playing, or watching them. But, it's pretty safe to say that sports have been entwined in our culture and society for over a century at this point, but during the 90s, it was taken to a whole new level. Not only did you have dominant teams in all of the major professional sports, but you also started seeing athletes in commercials, movies and TV shows, PLUS let's not forget about the HUGE uptick in merchandise. You had jackets, action figures, video games, you name it.

As a kid, at the end of a long day, which usually consisted of school, homework, dinner, maybe a bit of video game time, how did you end your day? Did you plop in front of the TV? Probably, right? Well, if you grew up in the 90s, and Nickelodeon was one of the only channels you watched, you may recall a block of programming that came on right around bedtime, and was made up of nothing but old shows. Like, REALLY old shows. Like, the shows that were so old, your parents probably watched them as a kid. Like, SO old, they were mostly in black and white!
Well that, my friends, was what was affectionately known as 'Nick at Nite', and what better way to wrap up an entire month dedicated to that Big Orange Splat than to talk about the shows that were on TV when you were just about to hit the hay. Let's be honest, if you grew up in the 90s and early 2000s, you read the Harry Potter books, or, at the very LEAST, saw a few of the movies. It was unavoidable, EVERYONE was talking about them. So today, we're going to do just that, and talk all about a series of books, films and a highly successful theme park that has played a HUGE part in shaping our generation.

Did you prefer *NSYNC over Backstreet Boys? How about LFO, or O-Town? Or maybe you preferred something with a bit more R&B flavor, like Boyz II Men, or 98°. Any way you shake it, Boy Bands were a HUGE part of not only music, but pop culture as a whole back in the late 90s and early 2000s. So in this episode, my friend Lara and I do a deeper dive into the phenomenon that defined pop music for almost a decade (and still does, if you're a BTS fan).

It's the universal language. Something that transcends generations, and connects us across all borders, both literally and figuratively. And you know what? No matter when you grew up, you probably think that your generation's was the best. And there's nothing wrong with that at all. So today's episode is all about MUSIC. So kick back and give a listen to me and my buddy Ryan wax nostalgia about how music affected us at the most influential times in our lives, the 90s and early 2000s.

So if you ever read Goosebumps books (and if you're reading this, you probably did, let's face it), you may recall that a LOT of the stories had a bit of a twist ending; something not quite right, or maybe a little off about it. Well on this week's Guest List episode, Dan Vorbeck and I go through his CAREFULLY curated list of the Top 10 Goosebumps Story Plot Twists. So, give it a listen, as we continue our journey through what is truly the spooky season.
The spooky season is upon us, so it's time to revisit a book series and franchise that made us all crap our pants as kids, Goosebumps! I've got a brand new guest with me this week (miss you already, Lou!), Dan Vorbeck, who was a HUGE fan of these books growing up (as was I, for that matter). So, kick back, enjoy your drive to work, and remember these literary works of art with us this week. Reader beware, you're in for a scare!
Sure, there were a TON of Power Rangers back in the day, but what about the love for the villains? Well on this week's Guest List Episode, Lou shares his (expertly curated) Top 10 Power Ranger Villains. Enjoy!
Martial Arts. Spandex. Giant Robots. Dinosaurs. These seemingly random words, when combined in the right order, trigger some of the happiest times of your childhood, if you grew up in the 90s and early 2000s. The Power Rangers were (and still are) such an iconic part of pop culture, and going strong for 30 years! This week, Lou and I talk about our experiences growing up with the show, the toys, the games, the movies, you name it.
So kick back, and grab your Power Coin, because it's...
IT'S MORPHIN' TIME!
So if you're a Turtles fan, or a Classic Video Games fan, or in my case, BOTH, then you probably saw that the Cowabunga Collection was released on all major gaming consoles a couple of weeks back. And you know what? It's AWESOME! 13 classic TMNT video games, and this week on the Guest List, Lou is gonna rank the top 10 (with three dishonorable mentions thrown in).
We also do a brief review of the game, so if you're on the fence check out this latest episode!
Hey dudes and dudettes! Today we're talking about one of the most gnarly franchises of all time, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! Before these guys came around, not even in their wildest dreams would kids want to practice ninjutsu in a sewer while double fisting two slices of pepperoni pizza. So sit back, tune out the burdens of the real world, and give a listen, as Dan and Lou dive a little deeper into the impact your favorite shell-backed superstars had on your childhood, if you grew up in the 90s.
Cowabunga!
It's another Generation 'S' Guest List mini-sode, and this week, Lou breaks down his top 10 Real Ghostbusters episodes! Now full disclosure, I hadn't really watched this show before we started talking about it for the podcast, but I have to tell you, this list made me into a believer.
Enjoy!
If there's something strange...yeah, you know the rest. In this episode, we're talking about our favorite Metropolitan Paranormal Investigative Professionals, the Ghostbusters! Remember how after the original movies came out, there was a cartoon, along with some video games, and pretty groovy toys? Yeah, we're gonna talk about all that. So who ya gonna call?
Generation S.
A brand new concept for the Generation S Podcast, we've got Top 10 Lists, ladies and gentlemen! I've decided that between full episodes, which will still come out bi-weekly, we're going to release a bonus episode, called the 'Generation S Guest List'. In these "mini-sodes", my guest from the previous episode will cultivate a Top 10 list directly related to the previous episode topic.
In this debut Guest List episode, Lou is bringing his Top 10 list of childhood video games.
Enjoy! (And don't forget, a full episode will be released next)
If you grew up during the 90s and early 2000s, you probably played video games. Or maybe you didn't, but you probably knew someone that did. We're pretty much the first generation to have video games from a very young age, and I'd be lying if I didn't say how influential they were on so many of our lives, as we've progressed into our 30's.
So kick back, relax, and give a listen as myself and my buddy Lou talk about video games, on Generation 'S'.
The premiere episode of Generation 'S'! This podcast will be a journey through shared experiences of growing up in the 90s and early 2000s. Our journey begins with a topic near and dear to our heart, professional wrestling (more specifically, the boom period that happened in the late 90s in pro-wrestling). WWF or WCW? D-Generation X or the nWo? If you're a fan of pro-wrestling now, and grew up during this time period, chances are it's questions like these that you faced on a daily basis at school, on the playground at recess, or hanging out at a friend's house while you tried to decide between playing WWF Attitude or WCW Revenge on your Nintendo 64.
So kick back, relax, and enjoy our experience with professional wrestling during the peak of the sport.
A brief introduction to sharing our experiences of growing up in the 90's and early 2000's. Welcome...to Generation 'S'.
