Dr Laura Mach is a general dentist, a practice owner and a life coach for dentists. Through her coaching she helps women who own dental practices to get out of stress and overwhelm. She also speaks to dental groups about better leadership and communication.
Dr Laura's entry into dentistry was quite non-traditional. After being a dental assistant and a stay at home mom of two small children, Laura decided to take the plunge and prepare for application into dental school. She graduated as a 32 year old mother of three. She has now owned her practice for 15 years and has been a life coach for four. These combined skills along with her history of overcoming the challenges placed on women and her cultural upbringing flavor her engaging way of speaking and teaching other women in dentistry.

Born and raised in Mumbai, India near her grandfather’s dental practice, family is incredibly important to Dr. Dassani and influenced how she lives her life - she learned early on that when you say “no” to one thing, you get to say “yes” to something else. Things she finds worth saying “yes” are time with her children, educating dentists on airway health, and carving time for things that bring joy to her life and the lives of others around her.
Dr. Meghna Dassani is passionate about promoting healthy sleep through dental practices. She has helped many children and adults improve their sleep, their breathing, and their lives through her sleep apnea work and in educating dentists all over the country to do the same. Her books and seminars help parents and practitioners understand the essential roles of the tongue, palate, and jaw in promoting healthy sleep. I’m so excited we got to dive into all things health, dentistry, and priorities.

Welcome to the 11th episode of The Story Project podcast, I am your host Joanna Scott and I am so excited to finally introduce my friends from the Mint Door to you, Dr. Karen Tindall and Dr. Laura Schwindt. Dr. Karen Tindall and Laura Schwindt are passionate about helping women dentists live a life of total wellbeing in all the roles they play. One thing I love about the conversation of total wellbeing is that it’s applicable to all women, regardless of age or the season of life they’re in. There are so many healthy practices that I wish I knew would be important to my overall wellness in my twenties, that I only made a priority in my forties.

Welcome to the tenth episode of The Story Project podcast, I am your host Joanna Scott and I am so excited to finally have my dear friend Dr. Summer Kassmel as my guest! Thank you for making time for this conversation, Summer!
Dr. Kassmel shared a story about her dentist growing up, Dr. Hook, who in so many ways was one of the people who inspired her to jump into dentistry. As a child Summer was always curious and asking questions of her dentist, who might have been annoyed at points, but told him she wanted to be a dentist! His response is something she’ll always remember.
“You don’t want to be a dentist Summer, you should just marry one”.
Summer continued by sharing that she also had a teacher tell her she didn’t have what it takes to practice dentistry. The combination of both of these men and their lack of encouragement boosted her determination to go to dental school and she’s never looked back since.

Dr. Paul Goodman is a family guy with his beautiful wife Mary and two adorable daughters, the founder and creator of the Dental Nachos community all while being a practicing dentist. Dr. Ashley Dubois is a proud native of the “Emerald Coast”, located in Fort Walton Beach, FL. The Path from Associate to Startup Doc with Dr. Holly Baller and the “Baller” Instincts it Takes to Get There
I’m thrilled to introduce my next guest, Dr. Holly Baller. A little more about Holly…Born in New York, Dr. Holly Baller moved to Aurora, Colorado during high school and has resided in the community ever since. While obtaining her undergraduate degree, she worked in a private orthodontic practice, which began her passion for dentistry and orthodontics. After Dr. Baller received her Doctorate of Dental Surgery, she joined the orthodontic practice, where she had worked while attending school. She helped forge the path for orthodontics as a paradigm shift was happening related to myofunction, airway and orthodontics, and whole-body wellness. Several of her cases were published in the book, The NEO Way.
Dr. Baller is fastidious about pursuing the most state-of-the-art advancements in dentistry and technology. With her in-depth knowledge in these areas, she is widely sought-after as a consultant by dentists and orthodontists throughout the country.

The Myth of the Superwoman. How to Avoid the Pitfalls of Thinking You Have to Do Everything..."Perfectly"
I’m so excited to introduce you to my guest Dr. Ashley Joves! Dr. Ashley is one of my favorite docs and has become a dear friend over the past few years. Ashley is a wife to her college sweetheart, mama to three beautiful boys, and foodie dentist at Smile + Co. In 2017, she announced during a Facebook Live video that she was finally opening her own startup practice in Folsom, CA. Filled with fear (and tears!) Ashley’s video was shared and viewed thousands of times. Her vulnerability resonated with doctors from around the world who know all too well the anxiety and self-doubt that come when pursuing your dreams. She’s been interviewed on several podcasts regarding her startup story, and in April 2017, she was approached by Michael Arias, “The Dental Marketer,” about documenting her startup in real-time. “The Making of Smile + Co.” podcast series was born, where Ashley detailed the highs and lows of her startup experience on a weekly basis. From demolition to grand opening, first hire to first fire - you’ll hear it all.

Dr. Cua of Perch Dentistry and I jumped on a Zoom call to discuss her story, journey into dentistry and the highs and lows she’s experienced being a female entrepreneur and practice owner.
We covered all-the-things chatting about Dr. Cua’s favorite hobby, her journey from biology into dentistry, how Dr. Shivam Patel (her husband and business partner) first met, the Enneagram, how to work with your spouse, International Women’s Month, Lucy Hobbs Project, gender biases she’s experienced and how she handles those situations. One of my biggest takeaways was a quote from Dr. Cua who said,
“The question I ask myself is, what will serve me more in this situation?”
While sharing her approach to responding to mistreatment, she shared, “Before something comes out of my mouth. I also ask myself the question, what’s more important? Is it better for me to use my energy fighting back for what he did or is it better for me to respond professionally and save my energy for someone who respects me? I am very careful where I use my energy”.
Dr. Cua, I cannot thank you enough for taking this time to share your story and heart with us on The Story Project. If you’d like to stay in touch with Dr. Cua follow her at: @perch_dentistry @dcua

Dr. Erin Issac, a board-certified pediatric dentist and native of Monroeville, PA, is excited to bring a fun, fresh dental experience to the children of Pittsburgh in her practice Winning Smiles Pediatric. Besides making kids smile, Dr. Erin enjoys spending time with her family and friends, watching and playing sports (GO STEELERS!), cooking and trying out new restaurants around the city, photography--all of the office photos found in the gallery were shot by Dr. Erin herself, fashion modeling, empowering young girls to be whatever the want to be and traveling the globe. If you’ve ever wanted to know anything about Disney World, just ask her…she’s been nearly 30 times!
“Who were you before the world told you who you should be?”I invited Dr. Erin Issac to be the very first guest of The Story Project because of her perspective and insights as a startup pediatric dentist and woman in dentistry. We discussed the stereotypes, social norms and standards that are placed on women inside and outside of dentistry and how to lean into your authentic self. Having a background in fashion modeling, college athletics and graduating from an Ivy League University made for an incredible dialogue around the truth that young girls should be taught that they can have both brains and beauty. We wrapped up discussing habits that lead to a healthy mindset and how taking care of our mental and physical health is equally important.
Dr. Issac has one of the most curated Instagram feeds full of authentic wisdom too. You can follow at @dr_erin on Instagram
