Join composer Richard Niles as he sits down with the extraordinary artists behind the creation of his groundbreaking album, "Adventures for Cello and Piano." In this podcast, discover the compelling WHY behind its creation, and the behind-the-scenes stories of HOW this innovative album came to life.
Richard Niles takes classical sophistication to new heights by blending it with contemporary audacity in his latest compositions – daring duets for cello and piano that defy traditional categorization. Is it Classical? Is it JAZZ? Dive deep into the creative process as Niles interviews the masterful virtuosos who brought his vision to our ears.
In these exclusive interviews, you'll hear from renowned cellist Dennis Karmazyn, esteemed English pianist Clive Dunstall, and the exceptional rhythm section duo of fretless bassist Mark Egan (Pat Metheny) and British drum phenomenon Ian Palmer. Learn how they came together to push the boundaries of "classical" Jazz with their artistry and innovation.
Grammy-winning composer Michael Gibbs describes Richard Niles' new project as "a delightful surprise – inquisitively engaging, intriguing, and masterfully played!" Jazzschool director Rob Ewing says, “The new album from composer Richard Niles demonstrates his compelling, playful rhythmic sense, combined with virtuosic yet tuneful melodies. Each performance in this rewarding set of pieces for cello and piano is rich with emotional expression, evoking a sense of exploration, wonder, and possibility. My 2002 BBC Radio 2 documentary series, “The Arrangers”, featured this documentary and my exclusive interview with Composer/Arranger PETE RUGOLO. He studied with Darius Milhaud, and had a long association with the STAN KENTON orchestra, becoming one of the most influential composers in modern jazz. He went on to produce and arrange for stars such as June Christy, The Four Freshmen and Nat King Cole, and write brilliant scores for film and TV including The Fugitive, The Untouchables, and Richard Diamond. As A&R for Capitol, he signed and produced the Miles Davis project known as “The Birth of the Cool”, enabling music that created the “cool school” of jazz. Here is his fascinating story, in his own words, assisted by contributions from Gene Lees, Stephanie Stein Crease, and Bud Shank.

I am SO happy to be bringing you this interview with RUPERT HOLMES Composer for Films & TV, singer/songwriter of many albums including the hits HIM and ESCAPE, the Piña Colada Song, Producer and Composer for Barbara Streisand, The Strawbs, John Miles, award winning author of books, plays and musicals. The interview was done for a BBC Radio 2 series called MANHATTAN, The most Musical Island on Earth in 2003.
When his first album Widescreen came out in 1974, I was going to the Berklee College of Music and I loved it so much I wrote him a fan letter , saying I’d love to meet him – He answered in a very witty typed and signed letter which I still have and treasure. It said that I should go to a small café in Paris on the Rue Saint-Sulpice where it is said that if you sit there long enough, everyone in the world will pass by – and that when I see him, I should say hello.
So, if you want to spend the next 45 minutes in the company of a very clever man and hear the story of his amazing career, hear him chat about Paul Simon, Barry Manilow, Melissa Manchester, studio work, Barbara Streisand, Broadway, and a very big Piña Colada!

Gary Burton, the multiple-Grammy-winning jazz vibraphonist has been an influential force on the vibraphone — the Burton grip, the technique he invented to play pianistically with 4-mallets, bears his name. He is also an important figure in jazz education, through a 33-year affiliation with the Berklee College of Music in Boston.
As a bandleader he made what is arguably the first jazz fusion album, in the 1960s, and has since mentored many artists including the guitarists Pat Metheny and Julian Lage. He also mentored composers such as Michael Gibbs, Steve Swallow, and Carla Bley, recording their music on his many successful albums. His long collaborative history with the pianist Chick Corea resulted in 6 Grammys and are regarded as one of the highest examples of the jazz duet.
In 2016 Gary Burton was recognized as a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master, the highest honor reserved for a jazz musician.
But for me, I will always be grateful to have had him as a teacher when I was a student at the Berklee College of Music from 1971 to 1975. As you are about to hear, Gary explains things extremely clearly, so that information that is new and sophisticated seems logical and inevitable. He was also very encouraging to me as a composer, and we spent many happy sessions looking at my tunes and discussing the possibilities.
In 2004 I wrote and hosted a radio series for the BBC, “Inside Improvisation”. Enjoy my interview with the great, Gary Burton.

Trumpet ace Wayne Jackson is an icon of American Soul. From Stax to Atlantic to Hi Records, with his friend Andrew Love, Charlie Chalmers and Bowlegs Miller, the Memphis Horns played on over 300 hits for Wilson Pickett’, Sam & Dave, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, Al Green, Elvis Presley, Neil Diamond, James Taylor, Steve Winwood, U2, Peter Gabriel, Rod Stewart, the Doobie Brothers, Stephen Stills. B.B. King, Mark Knopfler, Buddy Guy and Alicia Keys.
In 2003 I interviewed Wayne over the telephone for my BBC Radio 2 series “Richard Niles’ History of Pop Arranging”. One of the greatest pleasures of my many years as an interviewer is the rapport that develops over a 30-minute interview. You will certainly see that here as Wayne and I share some jokes and stories. He was so much more than an icon – he was the kind of guy you could enjoy sitting next to in the studio for a lifetime. – Richard Niles

In 2003 I interviewed Dave Weckl, a drummer whose unique talent and fire had won him induction into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 2000. His performances with Paul Simon, George Benson, Michel Camilo, Robert Plant, Dave Grusin, Mike Stern and Anthony Jackson brought him public acclaim. But with his dynamic contribution to the Chick Corea Elektric Band and the Akoustic Band (1985 to 1991) Weckl became a jazz icon.
In this interview, Weckl discusses his development, the influence of Steve Gadd, playing in complex meters, his sonic concepts, the use of computers, and his work with Chick Corea. Dave Brubeck, designated a “Living Legend” by the Library of Congress, was one of the most active and popular musicians in both the jazz and classical worlds.
With a career that spanned over six decades, his experiments in odd time signatures, improvised counterpoint, polyrhythm and polytonality remain hallmarks of innovation.
When I heard Brubeck would be in London for a series of concerts, I immediately booked an interview for the BBC as part of my series, “The New Jazz Standards”.
He talks about his early, experimental Octet, studies with Darius Milhaud, his musical influences, how “cool” jazz isn’t cool at all, and how his admirers included Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Duke Ellington and Stan Kenton.
He also tells some very amusing stories about his dear friend and brilliant musical partner, Paul Desmond. This was so much fun, and I’m so happy to bring you this rare interview with a very nice musical giant who always did everything in his own sweet way -Dave Brubeck

From the ARCHIVE, Richard Niles’ documentary on Progressive Jazz bandleader STAN KENTON. Not only is there a rare interview with Kenton himself but Niles interviews his daughter, acclaimed author LESLIE KENTON who discusses her father’s concepts. Kenton was a committed innovator who, for forty years, pushed jazz forward in harmony, composition, orchestration, and featured the work of gifted arrangers such as Pete Rugolo, Johnny Richards, musicians Stan Getz, Art Pepper, Conti Candoli, and singers Anita O’Day and June Christy.

Jimmy Rushing was best known as the bluesy vocalist of Count Basie's Orchestra from 1935 to 1948. In fact, as you will hear, Basie originally started it as Rushing’s backing group. Their swingin’ friendship resulted in the longest partnership of a singer with a big band! I made this documentary in 2002 for BBC Radio 2. The story is told by “Mr. Five By Five”, Rushing himself in a rare interview - along with British jazz legend Humphrey Lyttleton, jazz pianist Dave Frishberg, and authors Gene Lees, Will Friedwald, Chris Albertson and Stephanie Stein Crease.

I wrote and hosted a series called “Upfront” for BBC Radio 2 in 2002. At the end of the 1940s, the musical world was changing. Bebop was growing and the big bands only had a few years to live. But the rich baritone of Billy Eckstine met the divine alto of Sarah Vaughan and stars were born! Here is the story of how Vaughan got her start at 19 from Eckstine, told by Sarah Vaughan herself, critic Stephanie Stein Crease, writer Will Friedwald and Vaughn’s biographer Leslie Gourse.

In 2002, I wrote and hosted a series of documentaries called “Upfront” – about singers who made their names upfront with the big-bands. Here, I present the hippest of all singers Mel Tormé making his name with the most intellectual of bandleaders, Artie Shaw. Uber-talented Tormé was an actor, author, pianist, guitarist, arranger, songwriter (“The Christmas Song”), and drummer! He was singing with his vocal group, The Mel-Tones, when Shaw, the most successful bandleader in America wanted to expand his sound. This is the story of what can happen when two supreme talents collaborate - both a meeting of minds and a butting of heads! The music was as sublime as their infamous arguments!
The show features interviews with, Mel Tormé himself, Ginny Mancini (of the Mel-Tones), and writer Will Friedwald.

In 2001 I wrote and presented two series of “The Arrangers” for BBC Radio 2, examining the creators of iconic sounds in jazz & pop.
The fascinating story of HERB ALPERT & the Tijuana Brass is told in interviews with Alpert and his musicians, John Pisano, Bob Edmondson, and Pat Senatore. The music is sometimes dismissed, but the band had fifteen #1 albums, many hit singles and became the 4th biggest selling act of their time – a time that included The BEATLES!

PIR (Philadelphia International Records) took over from Motown as the preeminent black music label of the Seventies.
I interviewed producer, songwriter, guitarist, and arranger BOBBY ELI for the BBC and for my book, “The Invisible Artist” in 2008. Bobby was a member of Mother Father Sister Brother playing guitar on many of the most successful PIR hits of the 1970s, working with their biggest artists and most significant arrangers.
As a founder member of the PIR team, Bobby was able to give us an articulate and detailed understanding of the genesis and history of the Philadelphia Sound - Producers and Arrangers THOM BELL, GAMBLE & HUFF, BOBBY MARTIN, MFSB, TSOP, The O’JAYS, The DELPHONICS, LTD, and more!
Here, for the first time, is our complete interview.

BOB MALONE is the kind of party your neighbors come upstairs to tell to turn down, and then enjoy the music so much they stay all night dancing, getting high and plooking your Auntie!
Malone, armed only with a pillaged and deflowered piano, has thrown that party for Ringo Starr, John Fogerty, Bruce Springsteen, and Bob Seger. The singer/songwriter brings that same bacchanalian revelry to all of his solo albums.
Here, egged on by Richard Niles, Malone demolishes his piano, shreds his songs, propositions his wife (Karen Nash, who needed little encouragement) and created Looziana licentiousness. We suggest you watch this video barefoot with a bottle of almond oil and a friend who can cut a rug!

Legendary bass player JERRY JEMMOTT played on many hits by Aretha Franklin (“Think”), Nina Simone (“Ain’t Got No”), B.B. King (“The Thrill Is Gone”), Laura Nyro, Greg Allman, and King Curtis. He helped define the sound of the electric bass in the New York studios and in Muscle Shoals, Memphis. In this interview with composer/arranger Richard Niles, he demonstrates the concepts that made Jaco Pastorius say, “I’m just an imitator, Man. I’m doing a very bad imitation of Jerry Jemmott.”

The second part of my interview with Pete Waterman, a man who likes trains and has made more hits than ANY producer.
He loves music so much, he broke down and cried in this interview. .Beginning as a DJ in the 1950s and 60s, Waterman had close connections with Motown in the 60s and Philadelphia International in the ‘70s.
He produced his first record while on holiday in Jamaica and became a Radio One DJ. As A&R for Magnet Records he signed disco act Silver Connection and Chris Rea.
He set up his own label, management, promotions and consultancy company working with John Travolta, The Specials, Matchbox, Soft Cell and Elton John.
As consultant for MCA he produced hits for Alvin Stardust, Tracy Ullman and the Belle Stars, and signed Musical Youth and Nick Kershaw. He set up PWL with writer/producers Mike Stock and Matt Aitkin.
Their first hit was You Spin Me Round for Dead or Alive and went on to be named Songwriter of the Year 3 years in a row. In 1988 SAW had an unprecedented six singles in the Top 30.

Pete Waterman produced and co-wrote over 200 hit singles in the 1980s. While most critics dismissed the music as worthless, the public, who bought many million records, and Pete Waterman’s bank manager, knew the exact worth of it. Was the music formulaic? Yes, but that could be said for much of pop. Was it tuneful and danceable? Absolutely. Did it accurately reflect the ‘dress up & dance’, ‘showing out’, ‘loadsamoney’ spirit of the 80s? Oh yes, indeed!
Britain’s production team Stock, Aitken & Waterman (SAW) used the new technology of the 1980s to make a string of contagious hits for many pop artists including Kylie Minogue (I Should Be So Lucky, Better The Devil You Know), Jason Donovan, Mel & Kim (Showing Out, Respectable) Bananarama (Love In The First Degree, I’m Your Venus) and Rick Astley. Astley’s warm baritone voice gave SAW rare transatlantic successes with two #1s in America including Never Gonna Give You Up).
Here is the first part of my interview with the man who said he had “Woolworths EARS”, Pete Waterman.

In 2008, I interviewed Jeremy Lubbock for two BBC documentaries, “Richard Niles’ History of Pop Arranging” and “What is Melody?”. Jeremy was in fine form and discussed the current state of music, the music business and record companies. He also talked about his masterpiece recording “Awakening” conducted by his brother John and produced by George Martin. I am very happy to let music lovers hear the thoughts of one of this brilliant musical creator.
My book “The Invisible Artist” has an extended analysis of Lubbock’s work with musical transcription and analysis. Other featured artists are Jimmie Haskell, Arif Mardin, Brian Wilson, Thom Bell, Barry Manilow and Michael Gibbs.

Janita (Jenny) Haan has been called “the most powerful voice in rock history” from her work with British ‘prog-rock band, Babe Ruth. With a career spanning an incredible 50 years, the band led by composer/arranger/guitarist Alan Shacklock had many hits, their single “The Mexican” being a hit twice when it was taken up by remixer Jellybean Benitez and the hip-hop community in the 80s.
Jenny talks about how she developed her powerful vocal sound, dance moves and trademark costumes. Most impressive is her charm, her positive attitude and open mind. In a world filled with inflated egos, this is a rare example of a band that succeeded because of mutual respect allowing them to work together to achieve success.

In 2008 I wrote and hosted a 7-part series for BBC Radio 2, “Richard Niles’ History of Pop Arranging”. This eventually led to my PhD from Brunel University and my book, “The Invisible Artist”. The book, with interviews and 222 musical transcriptions of some of the greatest records in popular music, is available here:
Anyone who speaks to Jeremy Lubbock becomes aware very quickly that they are in the presence of a man who thinks very deeply—not only about music. His instincts are based on this intense thought process. Lubbock’s writing transcends craft to produce art of the highest order because of his mastery of his own distinctive musical language.
Lubbock, who passed away in January 2021, was an Englishman in both Los Angeles and New York. A highly respected and in-demand arranger since the 1970’s, he was also an acclaimed composer, songwriter and producer. Transcending the arbitrary divisions of this work into decades, his experience makes his comments on the state of the industry today particularly valuable.
His impressive career began with ear-training from his father, a respected classical musician. At the age of sixteen he turned his attention to jazz and pop and was soon working as a pianist and singer in London and Paris while studying architecture. In 1953 he recorded a version of the Perry Como hit Catch a Falling Star produced by George Martin. This led to club dates during the 1960’s.
By the 1970’s his arranging abilities landed him jobs with the BBC and ITV. His ‘big break’ came when composer Don Specht invited him to come to Los Angeles in 1977. He introduced Lubbock to producer Henry Lewey and in 1979 this led to Lubbock arranging Joni Mitchell’s acclaimed album Mingus.

Congratulations to TFF for making a great new record in 2021. But this exciting hit (#5 UK, #2 USA) was my first meeting with Tears For Fears. Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith had already had hits like “Shout” and “Everybody Wants To Rule The World”. But this was something different! Daisy Chute chats with me about how we sowed many seeds of love in the studio and why it’s impossible to park if you have a gig at the London Oriental Mandarin Hotel! Let’s drop some acid and listen to how we made this record with a little help from Guy Barker and Kate St. John. As Curt said, “We wanted to do something more colourful, something that sounded big and warm. You cannot get that from machines. You only get that with real musicians and real players."

Guitarist, songwriter, arranger and producer Alan Shacklock had massive hits with his Art/Prog Rock band BABE RUTH in the 1970s, with singer Jennie Haan. He went on to produce Dexy’s Midnight Runners, Meat Loaf, Mike Oldfield, Bonnie Tyler, Jeff Beck and Roger Daltrey. He produced soundtracks for the films Quicksilver, Doc Hollywood, Buddy’s Song and music for the FIFA World Cup. His song “The Mexican” (1972) became a massive hit in the 90s in the B-Boy & hip hop market. He’s a founder of British Record Producer’s Guild and was honored as EMI Songwriter of the Year for his #1 True Believers by Christian artist Phil Keagy.
He is currently Lecturer of Audio Engineering/Production at Nashville’s Belmont University.
In this interview with Richard Niles, Alan tells the first part of his incredible story, growing up in Hatfield, being part of the London music scene of the 1960s, success with BABE RUTH and his move into production.

For her work helping artists and composers at the Liverpool Institute of the Performing Arts, Paul McCartney said, “Rowena Morgan is my hero!”
The vivacious Welsh dynamo’s incredible career has included work in advertising, technology, sponsorship, radio, journalism, brand ambassador, artist liaison, social media management, event management, songwriting, publishing, music supervision, and business management at the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (now The IVORS).
She has become an icon of the British music industry as “The Musical Geisha” with her Ultimate Music/Media Industry Networking Nights, bringing together new artists, composers, publishers, label executives to exchange ideas, collaborate and create new projects.
Radio Richard is grateful to have Rowena on the show discussing – the current state of the music business, it’s challenges and ways to fix it – how an artist in 2021 can best achieve the career their talent deserves. Her information and sage advice can help YOU. So LISTEN to her fascinating conversation with composer Richard Niles, because, as she says, “It’s like medicine – it won’t do you any good in the bottle!”

PAUL McCARTNEY, RAY DAVIES and BARRY GIBB love her. Why should you love her too? Because she was in the Platinum, Brit Award nominated group ALL ANGELS.
She plays LOTS of instruments and sings better than an angel.
She has worked on soundtracks for film (YESTERDAY Danny Boyle & Richard Curtis ) and TV (David Attenborough's A Perfect Planet) She worked with Radiohead. She has written a new musical “Coven”. Her new EP is “Songs of Solace”. She is Café Nero ARTIST of the MONTH.
She not only talks about all this and more, but she sings 2 of her songs LIVE and you’ll see a clip of her singing “Tip For A Toreador” from Richard Niles’ BANDZILLA album “Bandzilla Rises!!!”

In 2002 I made a series of documentary programs for BBC Radio 2 about the singers who made their names with the big bandleaders. Frank Sinatra got his start with trumpeter Harry James’ band but when he saw the chance to join the much more successful Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, he went after it. In Dorsey he found his biggest musical influence and most powerful foe. This show tells the story of the powerful relationship of these two great artists.

Pat Metheny plays LIVE in Richard Niles Exclusive Interview PART 3
In this 3rd and final part of my BBC Radio 2 series “Pat Metheny - Bright Size Life” recorded in 2007, Pat not only explains his concepts, he also demonstrates them on the guitar. This is a unique opportunity to hear how he expresses the infinite optimism, fearless exploration and sensitive humanity of his music.
Features comments from GARY BURTON, LYLE MAYS, JACK DeJOHNETTE, JAY AZZOLINA.
I continued to ask philosophically provocative questions that elicited such fascinating answers. As I wrote in my book, The Pat Metheny Interviews, “we are indeed fortunate to have lived at a time when artists such as Metheny were allowed to develop, be appreciated and supported by both the artistic and economic environment of the 2nd half of the 20th century. Our lives have been enriched by them.”
Also included are musical transcriptions of Pat’s playing from the book. Enjoy!

Pat Metheny gets up close and personal with Richard Niles - Video PART 2 A RADIO RICHARD SPECIAL PRESENTATION In this 2nd part of my BBC Radio 2 series “Pat Metheny - Bright Size Life” recorded in 2007, Pat explains his concepts, philosophies and practices. This is invaluable to students, teachers and music lovers, and will enrich the soul of anyone who cares about art and creativity. Having known Pat since 1974, I posed some deliberately provocative questions, designed to get to the heart of his artistry. As I wrote in my book, “The Pat Metheny Interviews”, “I asked questions beyond music because I know that underneath all that charisma, theoretical knowledge and dynamic talent there is the intense philosophical mindset that created it. Pat Metheny is more than just a bunch of cool notes that are fun to listen to. There is a nexus in his brain Where Clifford Brown meets Nietzsche and they discuss nuclear physics while playing the changes to ‘Stella By Starlight’”

A RADIO RICHARD SPECIAL PRESENTATION “The only listener I know anything about is myself. I have absolutely no sense of how anybody else perceives anything. I just try to play for the listener inside me.” Pat Metheny
Pat Metheny is one of the most significant musicians of the last 50 years. In 2007, he invited me into his NYC home studio for my BBC Radio 2 series “Pat Metheny - Bright Size Life”. Over the next 3 days we talked about the myriad aspect of a career of unprecedented achievement, revolutionizing both the guitar and jazz itself - from Metheny’s first realization of his affinity for music to his wisdom accrued from years of dedicated musicianship - at practice, in the studio and on the road. Also interviewed are Metheny’s close collaborators including Gary Burton, Lyle Mays, Jack De Johnette, John Patitucci, his brother Mike Metheny and the late Michael Brecker. My friend Jack Gwizdala accompanied me for these interviews and played bass with Pat on some of the musical examples.
“The Pat Metheny Interviews” published by Hal Leonard in 2009, including musical transcriptions of Metheny’s musical performances illustrating his creative concepts. “Limpid, lucid, fluid, flowing, open, optimistic: you could apply these words to both Pat Metheny’s music and this book, a series of interviews by Dr Richard Niles, a gently humorous man whose strong work ethic has been rewarded with worldwide success in more than one genre. Niles’s banter gets the best out of his old friend. If you’re interested in music and ideas for a better future this book will help. If you’re already converted to Pat Metheny then it’s essential.” JAZZ JOURNAL
“the book goes beyond the usual biographical and guitar specific material that is normally found in a Metheny interview. It is a chance for musicians and non-musicians alike to learn more about the artistic process that fuels this legendary guitarist, composer and bandleader.” GUITAR CHRONICLE
“Niles has known Metheny since the mid-1970s, and he knows what questions to ask. The responses he gets are smart, funny and revealing. He has done pretty much everything right. People will still be learning from Metheny’s music for many more decades. And they can learn a lot about why it matters from this book. “ CALIFORNIA CHRONICLE
“Like eavesdropping on a conversation between two long-time friends and musicians, The Pat Metheny Interviews, is an insightfully revealing dialogue between American jazz guitarist and composer, Pat Metheny, and Richard Niles, a renowned composer, producer and songwriter.” MY 3 BOOKS

ASMAC MASTERCLASS PART 2
JOHN ALTMAN & RICHARD NILES
Different Approaches Explained
Moderator: Sylvester Rivers
Composer/Arrangers John Altman (James Bond, Rod Stewart, Monty Python) and Richard Niles (Paul McCartney, Ray Charles, Pat Metheny) demonstrate their different approaches and arranging techniques. For this special ASMAC event, they have both arranged short versions of a simple nursery rhyme, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. This is a unique opportunity to compare and contrast the working methods of two acclaimed artists with 100 years combined experience.
Moderator and legendary arranger Sylvester Rivers asks all the right questions. How did they conceive, plan and execute the arrangement? How did they choose instrumentation, meter, groove, harmonic landscape? Why did they make those choices?
Don’t miss this opportunity to share some musical knowledge, and some laughs, with three arrangers who have helped create the sounds of our time.
BONUS: This PART 2 of this 2 hour presentation includes Altman’s CHASE SCENE from his score to the James Bond film, GOLDENEYE. PLUS, two live performances of Richard Niles’ BANDZILLA, at the 2002 Falkirk Festival, featuring singer PAT KANE and multi award winning jazz guitarist JIM MULLEN playing Niles’ arrangements of “Luck Be a Lady” (Guys & Dolls) and “Free Man In Paris” (Joni Mitchell).

NEAL HEFTI was one of the most original and influential composers and arrangers of the 20th Century. Beginning as arranger for Woody Herman he went on to composing and arranging for Count Basie and Frank Sinatra. He wrote for film (The Odd Couple, Barefoot In The Park, Harlow, Sex & The Single Girl) and for TV (the phenomenal success of his “Batman” theme).
I wrote and hosted this show for my BBC Radio 2 series “The Arrangers” in 2001 (produced by Elizabeth Clark) and am happy to make this available for a new audience.

SHEL TALMY is one of the most innovative and influential record producers in popular music. It could be said, with a great deal of justification, that he created the SOUND of the 1960s. I’m talking about the power, the glory, the in-your-face gut punching power of rock. One thing you notice about Shel immediately is that you’re talking to a very clever man with a brain the size of Jupiter that got him on the Quiz Kids TV show. He worked for 3 years in television, and then worked as an engineer at Conway Recorders in LA where he was able to learn how things worked - and then improved on it. Urged to go to London by an English colleague, Talmy entered and then dominated the Swinging’ scene like Julius Caesar conquering Gaul. History was made and remade again with hits by The Kinks and The Who, Manfred Mann, Pentangle, Lee Hazlewood and many more. So sit back and enjoy a chance to meet the creative force that is Shel Talmy.

Is radio important? Tony Currie thinks so. This golden voiced Scottish radio legend started broadcasting in 1972 at KPFK in Los Angeles started Radio Clyde, Scotland's first independent local radio station, became an announcer on Scottish Television, became Controller of Programmes for the Cable Authority, and the ITC, Director for BBC Scotland's television channels BBC ONE Scotland and BBC TWO Scotland, chairing both the Royal Television Society Scotland and the Radio Academy in Scotland. He has written for countless newspapers and magazines and has many published books. He created Radio Six International which syndicates its programming to 56 radio stations around the world.
We became friends when I was a BBC broadcaster in the 1990s and in this interview we waffle on about the history of radio, what broadcasting is and why it is important.

Bassist/composer/author Mo Foster has credits any other musician would find tiring! Jeff Beck, Phil Collins, Brian May, Ringo Starr, Gil Evans, Van Morrison, Cliff Richard… I could go on but then I’d be too shagged out to continue this intro. Mo’s book British Rock Guitar is so much more than the unimaginative title suggests. Filled with fascinating facts and hysterical stories, this is the book to have when you’re on the loo after eating a particularly challenging curry.
The best recommendation I can give you for this interview is that I prepared for it by wearing rubber undergarments - and I suggest you do the same.

Richard Niles is re-releasing WHATEVER HAPPENED TO HOLLYWOOD? by his stepfather, screenwriter Jesse Lasky Jr. He has written an informative Foreword and added almost 400 rare photographs. The book tells the story of growing up in the dusty streets of Hollywood when his father produced the first feature film, and started a company that became Paramount. A compelling personal memoir written by a masterful writer, Lasky describes his life as a Hollywood screenwriter for Cecil B. De Mille, Harry Cohn, Nick Ray, Sam Fuller and Alfred Hitchcock, working with Gary Cooper, Anthony Quinn and Yul Brynner, and dating Jean Harlow.

Thanks to all my Radio Richard listeners and today I have a special treat for you, my 2010 interview with Gary Sinise. star of stage and screen, well-loved for his many film roles such as Apollo 13, Forest Gump, and of course as the rugged Detective Mac Taylor in CSI: New York!!!”
It’s easy to put people in convenient little boxes, but some people have more than one talent. Not only is Gary Sinise a superb actor and an actual movie star, he’s a rockin’, funky-butt bass player!! For this interview , I drove out to 29 Palms Marine Base in the middle of the Mojave desert. he not only talks about his acting but also shows why music is so important to him. After 9/11 he felt compelled to do something to help the soldiers risking their lives all over the globe. He formed The Lieutenant DAN BAND, a big 16-piece showband that travels all over the world bringing entertainment and a taste of home to American soldiers. On the very windy airfield in the dry but nevertheless picturesque area beloved by lizards and cacti, I asked Gary how he got his start in music.
The Lt. Dan Band is of course named after the wounded soldier Gary plays in the movie Forest Gump. The band features some great musicians including acclaimed drummer Danny Gottlieb who’s played not only with Pat Metheny Group, but with John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock and The Blues Brothers Band! I asked my old buddy Danny Gottlieb about working with Gary on this project.

Actor, singer and record producer Steve Rowland has had an incredible career by any standards. As a teenager he qualified for the Olympics as a diver. When an accident ended that, he burst into 1950s as an actor and singer with a family full of Hollywood royalty. His father was Roy Rowland, a successful director and his mother Ruth a respected writer. Her uncle was feared mogul Louis B. Mayer. Steve’s uncle was director/producer Jack Cummings. He also became a gossip columnist for a number of Hollywood fan mags because of the friends he hung out with – Robert Wagner, Natalie Wood, Debbie Reynolds, Sal Mineo, Dorothy Provine, Tuesday Weld, Bob Mitchum and his son Jim, Ed ‘Kookie’ Burns and Jimmy Dean. Steve’s band played to packed houses and he started getting parts in the new TV industry, (The Rifleman, Wanted Dead or Alive) while doing films like “Crime in the Streets” and “The Thin Red Line” . Getting a part in “Battle of the Bulge” with Henry Fonda took Steve to Spain where he stayed to form a successful band, Los Flaps. From there, he moved to London to become a record producer of many hits for Dave Dee Dozy Mick and Titch, The Herd, P.J. Proby, The Pretty Things, Jerry Lee Lewis, Rodriguez and his own group The Family Dogg. Later as a producer for Hansa/Ariola I was his arranger for the hit “I Lost My Heart To A Starship Trooper” (where I discovered Sara Brightman).
This interview is a rare look into life in Hollywood in the 40s and 50s and Part II will cover London in the Swingin’ Sixties. Have fun with Steve – I did!

Legendary Arranger/Producer H.B.Barnum has been successful in every decade since the 1950s. Although working for the FBI (!), he became a singer in doo-wop groups the Dootones and the Robins, also working as an A&R man. The multi-instrumentalist decided to concentrate on music when he had a hit with “Pink Shoelaces” (Dodie Stevens). He arranged for Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and Dean Martin, Motown – The Supremes, Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, Smoky Robinson “Shop Around”. He arranged both Lou Rawls’ and Gladys Knight’s versions of “Help Me Make It Through The Night” – and Ann Margaret, Barry White, P Diddy and Phil Collins. He also arranged for Count Basie, Stan Kenton and Duke Ellington. He was Musical Director for Aretha Franklin for 40 years.
All this from a man who told me he “never wanted to be a musician”.

Award winning guitar virtuoso Al Di Meola visited my home studio for an interview that will be a special treat to guitarists and music lovers. He spoke about how he developed his music, his explorations in sound and his love of Latin music. He also played two beautiful pieces from his (then) new album Flesh on Flesh (2002) live on acoustic guitar. [There is also an amusing moment when we talk of the amazing new development – SATTELITE RADIO!]

Michael Gibbs is one of the most innovative composers in jazz working with Gary Burton, Joni Mitchell, Pat Metheny, John McLaughlin, Whitney Houston, George Martin, Elton John, Sting, Peter Gabriel and John Scofield. He was my composition teacher at the Berklee College of Music (1974-5) and I played in his band (which I named) The Only Chrome Waterfall Orchestra. He is interviewed and his music analyzed in my book “The Invisible Artist”. I cannot say that his work is influential because his style so unique it is virtually impossible to copy. He is a wonderfully charming fellow, so enjoy our conversation at my studio in London (2010). The studio was in the garden, so the birds you hear were real, not samples.

I’ve never met anyone who I instantly liked as much as Jimmie Haskell. You can tell from the way we’re joking around in this 2002 interview that there was an instant rapport. In my book, “The Invisible Artist” I refer to his “gentle, understated sense of humor”. I ‘got’ him and he liked that I ‘got’ him. And respected him.
Haskell was successful as an arranger and producer from the late 1950’s starting out with Ricky Nelson to working with artists such as Sheryl Crow. His impressive credits include work with Steely Dan, Barbra Streisand, Blondie, Elvis Presley, Tina Turner, Simon & Garfunkel (a Grammy for “Bridge Over Troubled Water”), The Bee Gees, Chicago (another Grammy for “If You Leave Me Now”), Bobbie Gentry (yet another Grammy for “Ballad of Billie Jo”), Bobby Darin, Crosby Stills & Nash, The Doobie Brothers, Jose Feliciano, Laura Nyro, Gladys Knight, Barry Manilow and Michael Jackson. The stats: Grammy Awards (3), Emmy Awards (1 and 4 nominations), composer for 31 feature films, 32 TV movies and 445 TV episodes. Arranger and/or producer for more than 132 gold and platinum hits.
This 2nd Part continues talking about Bobbie Gentry and moves on to stories about Barry Manilow and Burt Bacharach. Haskell explains how his professional attitude and deep musicality enabled him to work on virtually any kind of music. As Arif Mardin told me, “If you’re looking for craft, you have to look to Jimmie Haskell.”

“What’s Going On?” I’ll tell you: A rare and historically significant interview with legendary Motown arranger DAVID VAN DePITTE recorded for my BBC Radio 2 documentary series in 2002. Best known for his work on one of the most critically acclaimed albums of all time, Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On?”, Van DePitte’s contribution is significant. I am not aware of any other pop arrangement that uses a non-stop counter melody in this way, giving the song a feeling of sophistication, depth and gravitas it would otherwise have lacked. He also worked on many records for Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, the Four Tops, Funkadelic and Gladys Knight. Our interview allows us a rare view from the ‘shop floor’ of Motown’s production line, working with Gay, Berry Gordy, producers such as Frank Wilson and musicians such as his friend James Jamerson. No one with soul will want to miss this!

The FABULOUS 50s, and the birth of Rock and Roll as a commercial force was directed by the arrangers, using a fusion of swing, jazz, blues and Latin styles. Dave Bartholomew in New Orleans, Jesse Stone in New York City and Maxwell Davis in Los Angeles created a new sound that shocked a public used to the cocktail pop of Mitch Miller, Doris Day and Tony Bennett. And the technological development of the electric guitar and bass allowed rock to shake, rattle and roll into new radio stations starved for music. All in the 2nd episode of my acclaimed series. Manilow Magic! I interviewed pop superstar Barry Manilow in London (2003) for my BBC Series “Richard Niles’ History of Pop Arranging” (available here on Radio Richard) and for my acclaimed book “The Invisible Artist” (available from Amazon). Thoughtful and articulate, Barry reveals the musical concepts that have shaped his career from writing jingles to arranging and producing for Bette Midler, Dionne Warwick and Nancy Wilson to the creation of his own massive hits like “Mandy”, “Could It Be Magic” and “Weekend in New England”. He discusses the Broadway and rock influences that give his music “MUSCLE” and “EDGE”. Manilow talks about his use of technology on his then new album “2:00 AM Paradise Café”. He describes his unique dynamic “lay out” of a song taking it from a gentle voice and piano to a screaming hurricane of poptastic power. This is a rare and historically significant look into the process of one of the most successful popular artists of all time. Don’t miss anything!
Original video filmed by Aylin Marquez Niles.

Jazz Improv Magazine called Jay Azzolina “one of the finest and most talented guitarists on the planet”, and I would be the last to argue with them. As my fellow student at The Berklee College of Music back in the 1970s, Jay knocked everyone out (including our teacher Pat Metheny) every time he picked up the guitar.
He earned a Grammy nomination for his work with Spyro Gyra in the 1980s and went on to work with Michael Brecker, John Patitucci, Herbie Mann and Chuck Mangione. He said of playing with Brecker and Patitucci, “The reason these guys are so amazing is because while playing they are constantly dealing you their music and at the same time receiving your music back and instantaneously making it theirs again. To me this is real group improvisation that is possible only with exceptional, giving players.”
He has also worked with singers Michael Franks, Donna Summer, Rickie Lee Jones, Manhattan Transfer and Carly Simon. His CDs as a leader include Never Too Late 1989, Past Tense 2000, Live At One Station Plaza 2002, The Rolling Stones Project 2005 and Local Dialect 2007. (More info at http://www.jayazzolina.net/)
I interviewed Jay at his home for my “What Is Melody?” series, and I had him demonstrate his ideas accompanied by bassist Janek Gwizdala. I also have Jay demonstrate his ability to not hurt me when I forced him to play different emotions and styles.
SPECIAL BONUS: I booked Jay LIVE at Pizza Express Jazz Club in London with my friends Gary Husband (drums/piano) and Laurence Cottle (bass) from June 4, 2011. This is killer stuff and you only get this with RadioRichard. SUBSCRIBE to our YouTube channel! Donate to our PATREON! Pretty Please!
ALL MUSIC LICENCES AND COPYRIGHTS CLEARED BY BBC RADIO 2 IN 2003. I wrote and hosted this 7-part documentary series for BBC R2 in 2003. In Episode 1, I explain what an arranger is and interview arrangers Harold Battiste, Barry Manilow, Nick Ingman, Pee Wee Ellis, John Altman, Bobby Martin, H. B. Barnum, Jimmie Haskell and Jeremy Lubbock. If you don’t know them, you’ll know the records they arranged for Aretha, James Brown, Monty Python, Simon and Garfunkel, Dr. John and Michael Jackson. The series served as the basis for my book The Invisible Artist. For music lovers and students, this series is the mother lode. A lot more incredible content in the next 6 episodes. Don’t miss them! Steve began as half of remix team Brothers In Rhythm, with tracks for Michael Jackson, Sting and McCartney. He went on to become an acclaimed producer and songwriter for many artists including Westlife, Steps, Leona Lewis and Britney Spears . We worked together on many projects including Take That, Clive Griffin and Kylie Minogue. He became Kylie’s Musical Director for her spectacular tours in 1998 and this has continued in the theatre with Rent and the Hurly Burly Show. I asked Steve to explain his work as Musical Director. How does he help make a gigantic show even more effectively humongous? There is also some invaluable advice for artists who want to give their small gigs dramatic bang without the bucks! http://steveandersonproductions.com/

Guitar players, you’re in for a special treat!
I first met Grammy Winning guitarist, arranger & composer LAURENCE JUBER in 1975. He was a top London studio even then and we did sessions, jingles and TV shows together over the years. Over the years he’s published many guitar books, played in James Bond movies and rocked around the world as a member of Paul McCartney’s Wings. He can play literally anything on his instrument - classical lute to country blues to groovy jazz. But here, I ask Laurence to show how he developed his unique, award-winning concept of the acoustic guitar, playing in different tunings and creating brilliant new sounds and arrangements. How did he come up with the idea and how exactly does he do it? A masterclass from a true master. Watch! Listen! Take notes! And you may watch the video version HERE
GREG PHILLINGANES is a singer, songwriter and studio ace keyboard player known for his work with Stevie Wonder, Eric Clapton, Michael Jackson and Toto. I interviewed him for my “What Is Melody?” BBC radio series and he demonstrates his work with Herbie Hancock. As a bonus, you can hear “Jump Back”, an unreleased track I wrote with British singer Clive Griffin. The London session was as brilliant as you’d expect with Steve Ferrone on drums, Nathan East on Bass, Jess Bailey on Clavinet and Greg going absolutely bonkers on the piano. It was sounding so great, I threw off my professional producer’s hat and let the session turn into a big time jam. Enjoy!!!

I interviewed the great composer & pianist Bob James in my London studio in 2003 for my BBC series “The New Jazz Standards” Here is the 2003 interview with two live tracks I produced in my studio. While Bob was in the studio, he said, “Hey Richard, I just got an idea for a head for a new tune. Would you mind giving me a minute while I write it out so I can try it out with the guys?” I said, “Not only will I give you a minute, I’ll give you all coffee – and cookies!” I was happy as a puppy when Bob named the tune “NILES A HEAD” and later released it on his Urban Flamingo CD. Billy Kilson (drums), James Genus (bass).
Because Radio Richard is the gift that keeps on giving, I include yet another track I recorded in my studio when Bob showed up with the late guitar master Chuck Loeb in 2000. For anyone who thinks Bob’s just a “smooth jazz” artist, well, they haven’t heard much of Bob James and they certainly haven’t heard this track.

I interviewed the great composer & pianist Bob James in my London studio in 2003 for my BBC series “The New Jazz Standards” and again in 2007 for my series “What Is Melody”. Here is the 2007 interview with a live track I produced in my studio from the first session with Bob’s wonderful band: Billy Kilson (drums), James Genus (bass) and Dave McMurray on tenor sax playing his tune “My Brother & Me”. Between 1998 and 2003 I wrote and hosted a series on BBC Radio 2, New Jazz Standards. I played contemporary releases, but I also interviewed artists and recorded them playing live in my little studio in Chiswick, London. This show featured acclaimed group the YELLOWJACKETS. Originally broadcast in 2003, I interviewed Bob Mintzer who had just joined the group. A wonderful chance to hear that band on two life performances with Russel Ferrante, Jimmy Haslip and Marcus Baylor. [All music royalties already paid by the BBC at time of broadcast.]

How about listening to WAYNE SHORTER talking about composition? You can have that rare opportunity right here in my 2003 interview for my series “The New Jazz Standards”. This is an excerpt from the show where Wayne also talks to me about Miles Davis and working with Herbie Hancock on their duo record “One On One”, so I suggest you click PLAY, and SUBSCRIBE – in that order!

Guitarists and jazzbos will love this masterclass in improvisation from award-winning guitarist and composer MIKE STERN. Recorded in 2007 at his NY apartment, the floors covered in music, he talks working with Miles Davis and Michael Brecker, and demonstrates his concepts on his Telecaster, aided by the superb Janek Gwizdala on bass. I went to the Berklee College of Music with Mike 1971-1975 and he played in my Guitar Quartet commissioned by Pat with guitarists Mitch Coodley and Jay Azzolina. So this is a relaxed ‘hang’ that will be a valuable resource for students and fun for all.
I recorded this for my two BBC Radio 2 series “What is Melody?” and “Inside Improvisation.

He may not be a household name, but Charles Calello has arranged hits for The Four Seasons, Frankie Valli, Laura Nyro, Shirley Ellis, Streisand, Springsteen, Engelbert Humperdink, Gloria Estefan, Barry Manilow, Dr. Buzzard, Kid Creole, Kenny Rogers, Glen Campbell and Frank Sinatra. In fact this interview contains what I think is the BEST SINATRA STORY of all time! A rare insider’s view of the history of popular music! Recorded originally for my BBC radio series “Manhattan – the most musical island on Earth” in 2003.

I interviewed award winning bass virtuoso & composer John Patitucci in 2007 for my BBC radio series “What Is Melody” in his basement studio in his home, after having a fabulous cup of espresso! I was assisted by my friend, bassist and pianist Janek Gwizdala. This is a masterclass from a true master of both upright and electric bass as John demonstrates his approach to melody on his two instruments. [Theme sung by Daisy Chute. I first worked with British jazz saxophonist CHRIS HUNTER when he was a London studio ace at 18. He then became one of the only British jazz musicians to conquer the New York jazz and studio scene when he was asked to join Gil Evans. In this interview, he demonstrates how he achieved his mastery on the horn and the concepts that have made him one of the most brilliant artists in music. At the end of the interview, I have included “Black ‘n’ Shiny”, a track from my album “Santa Rita” where he does to the alto sax what the Vikings did to the Anglo Saxons. Mark Egan, Bass, Steve Hamilton (keys), Danny Gottlieb, (drums), and Richard Niles (guitar).
In 2004 I did a series for BBC Radio 2 “Inside Improvisation”. Eliane Elias is an award-winning Brazilian pianist, composer and singer with many Grammy nominated albums. Her husband Marc Johnson was the bassist for Bill Evans’ last trio and has many albums as a leader. I asked Elias and Johnson to demonstrate the differences between mainstream jazz and Brazilian rhythms and their remarkable musical communication is a joy for your ears to behold. Apologies for the bad sound but we recorded this in a traffic noisy New York apartment.
I interviewed Lyle in Los Angeles for my BBC Radio 2 series “WHAT IS MELODY?” in 2007. He talks about his first meeting with Pat Metheny and discusses the composition of their then recent CD, “The Way Up”.
I first met Lyle when he joined the Pat Metheny Group and had the pleasure of working with him on the American Garage album in 1979. I remember being in the studio recording a tune called “The Search” and I suggested that the guitar melody, played on a 12-string might sound great in 3-part harmony. Pat and I discussed it for a couple of minutes and by the time Pat said, “OK, let’s try it”, Lyle had written the arrangement on a pad of paper. Whenever there was a problem in the studio, he would immediately go out to the dining area where he had a travel chess set.
Lyle had both a breathtaking musical talent and a wry sense of humor (as you’ll hear at the end of this interview!) I feel very fortunate to have known him.

I interviewed Nile Rodgers in his tasteful apartment in New York City for my 2003 BBC Radio series, “Manhattan – The most musical island on Earth”. CHIC was the galloping guitar of Nile Rodgers and the bubbling bass of Bernard Edwards. Their hits, including Dance Dance Dance, Everybody Dance, Le Freak, The Greatest Dancer,I Want Your Love and Good Times created a sophisticated, classy funk elevated by Rodgers’ inventive arrangements. Nile talks about his life, his influences and his productions of artists such as Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Sister Sledge, Carly Simon and Diana Ross. An invaluable look into the mind of a uniquely influential musician. #nilerodgers #interview
“I believe in the future”, says David Chesky, an internationally renowned composer/pianist respected in the Jazz and Classical worlds. He has written orchestral works, operas, ballets, chamber works many combining sophisticated compositional techniques with the urban sounds of New York City. He also runs Chesky Records producing audiophile recordings in classical, jazz and World music. This is one of the most fascinating interviews for my radio series “Inside Improvisation” in 2005, and David demonstrates his concepts at the piano. My theme song is performed by New York jazz chanteuse Katherine Gang.
The Carpenters are one of the best-selling music artists of all time with three number-one singles, five number-two singles, 15 number-one hits (Adult Contemporary) and 12 top-10 singles. They have sold more than 90 million records worldwide. Karen Carpenter is justly considered the greatest pop vocalists to grace a microphone, and perhaps less known as a superb drummer. In 2003, I interviewed producer/arranger/singer Richard Carpenter for my BBC Radio 2 series “Pop Arrangers” which later became my book “The Invisible Artist” (with a chapter on Carpenter). Here he discusses the arranging and production techniques used in the making of such hits as Close To You, Ticket To Ride, Calling Occupants, We’ve only Just Begun, and many more. Where else can you hear Richard Carpenter demonstrating his ideas at the piano? A unique look at one of the true masters of pop.
This short interview is a masterclass in drum technique and improvisation from a unique drummer. In 1998 I wrote and hosted a music series INSIDE IMPROVISATION for BBC Radio 2. I interviewed Grammy winning drummer Danny Gottlieb (the original Pat Metheny Group, Gary Burton, Mahavishnu/John McLaughlin, Blues Brothers, Randy Brecker, Stan Getz, Eliane Elias, Gary Sinese). This short interview is followed by a track from my 1988 album, Santa Rita. “The Seduction of Art” ©1998 Niles Smiles Music (BMI) features Danny on drums with the great Mark Egan on Bass, (Danny’s partner in their group Elements), Chris Hunter (alto sax), Steve Hamilton (keys) and Richard Niles (guitar).
In 2005, I wrote and hosted a series for BBC Radio 2, “Inside Improvisation”. The purpose was to explain the many facets of improvisation. I interviewed one of my biggest musical heroes, multi Grammy winning composer and trumpet virtuoso, Randy Brecker. This is one of the best possible demonstrations of how a jazz musician develops their skills, a unique masterclass by a masterful artist. In 2016, Brecker sang and played on “You Can’t Get There from Here” from my Bandzilla Rises!!! album (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lDYluRQNoY )
Trevor Horn is arguably the greatest record producer in the history of pop. I interviewed him when I was teaching at the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford in 2009. This is an invaluable masterclass in record production, artist development and creativity. Trevor talks about making many of his hit records such as Video Killed The Radio Star, Slave to the Rhythm, Seal, The Pet Shop Boys, Frankie Goes To Hollywood/Relax, Faith Hill and many more.
In May of 2003 I was asked to become Musical Director, Conductor, Arranger & Guitarist for Michael’s concert, broadcast by Radio 2 June 16, 2003. I was writing some songs with Hamish at the time and asked if he would like to come along. I will post more of the concert later.
This was probably my favorite interview, only because I was sitting on a piano stool next to Michael while he was singing in my ear, possibly the most beautiful sound on earth.
