Scripture: John 3:1-17
Baptism is God’s cleansing of our original sin, initiation into Christ’s Holy Church, incorporation into the body of Christ, and empowerment by the Holy Spirit for a lifelong process of discipleship in the community. Through Jesus’ conversation with Nicodemus, we understand what being a part of God’s Kingdom means within our faith.

Our theological task, within our faith, is to learn and grow in our understanding of our most basic Christian affirmation and what that means for us. Hebrews invites us to recognize what within our faith is necessary for growth. In the Methodist tradition, we often view what is called, The Quadrilateral, to help us in our development of faith. We draw from different faith areas to help us grow as we more deeply understand scripture.

The original affirmation of our faith is that of affirming our belief in the Lordship and Resurrection of our Savior Jesus Christ. This affirmation rests at the heart of our faith and informs how we interact with God and one another. Through Paul’s affirmation of what is at the heart of our faith, we create space for the work that flows through us and our expression of faith.

Scripture - John 12:12-19
Is Jesus the king we wanted, or the king we got? In the narrative we have Jesus, riding into Jerusalem to shouts of Hosanna, but as we prepare to journey through this week, we know those shouts will change. Why is the “good news” truly hard to hear? Why do we push back against it when it is in front of us, when we see it in action? Our King is coming. Do Hosannas continue or do we feel betrayed at what we thought was offered?

Scripture - John 3:14-21
John 3:16-17 is 52 words, and we often define those verses as a summary of the Gospel. In the midst of a conversation with Nicodemus, Jesus offers a teaching on who he truly is, and the work of the good news in the world. It is not our job to judge the good news, but to live as though we are being judged by it. How does this good word call us to live?

Check out this sermon as Jesus continues this distinction between the physical and the spiritual. As he walks into the temple, he notices all of the things happening inside of it. Seeing many of these things angers him and he turns the tables. Were the leaders so focused on the physical temple, that they did not think of the ways that God truly moves?

Second Sunday of Advent
Scriptures: Isaiah 40:1-11, Mark 1:1-8
Amidst the chaos of the world, we are called to peace and comfort. When we look around creation we often see the worst of what humanity has to offer. However, we are called through Christ as beacons of peace. Not a peace that gives us the power to lord over others, but a peace that creates space for all persons and recognizes their humanity. A peace, that while named as comfort, comes in uncomfortable ways.

Direction: Jesus triumphantly enters Jerusalem, and in the act we see a manner of submission by Christ. While we know how the story of Jesus entering Jerusalem ends, we also know the reason he did that. Jesus comes to earth to give, and when we come to the table we receive that which Jesus offers over and over again.

BEECH GROVE NOTES
35 The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad; the desert shall rejoice and blossom; like the crocus 2 it shall blossom abundantly and rejoice with joy and shouting. The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, the majesty of Carmel and Sharon. They shall see the glory of the Lord, the majesty of our God. 3 Strengthen the weak hands and make firm the feeble knees. 4 Say to those who are of a fearful heart, “Be strong, do not fear! Here is your God. He will come with vengeance, with terrible recompense. He will come and save you.” 5 Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be opened; 6 then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the speechless sing for joy. For waters shall break forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert; 7 the burning sand shall become a pool and the thirsty ground springs of water; the haunt of jackals shall become a swamp; the grass shall become reeds and rushes. 8 A highway shall be there, and it shall be called the Holy Way; the unclean shall not travel on it, but it shall be for God’s people; no traveler, not even fools, shall go astray. 9 No lion shall be there, nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it; they shall not be found there, but the redeemed shall walk there. 10 And the ransomed of the Lord shall return and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away. — Isaiah 35:1-10
JUSTICE IN THE DESERT
The Desert Blossoms
Super Bloom — “a rare desert botanical phenomenon in which an unusually high proportion of wildflowers whose seeds have lain dormant in desert soil germinate and blossom at roughly the same time. The phenomenon is associated with an unusually wet rainy season.”
How do we wrestle with the nature of joy when it feels far from our conscious?
Today’s prophecy calls us to confront the hope and promise of joy as it is given by God.
Our Christmas Card from Isaiah today reads:
“Justice in the Desert.”
Why chose “justice” and not “joy?”
- The joy that we celebrate as we approach this season of Christmas is the joy of God’s justice for the world.
- Our Judaic roots teach the understanding that the promise of joy is rooted in justice
Diving into Isaiah:
- Prophecies warning Jerusalem about the impending future.
- Isaiah warning of the destruction that is to come.
- Reminders to the people and leaders of Judah that should they continue on this path of forsaking God it will lead them into relationships that will result in their downfall.
- Isaiah knows that there is judgement for the nations, but it is God’s justice for God’s people and God’s creation that will stand firm within the nature of salvation and redemption.
Reminders for the People of Judah:
In the midst of suffering, God’s Spirit reigns down, and brings justice for those who seek the joy of God.
Moving Towards Christmas:
- In Jesus’ birth is a great opportunity to see God’s justice on display.
- The world is redeemed, a promise for the holy city of the Lord to be built, and a place for the people of God to dwell.
The Metaphorical Wilderness of Isaiah 35:
- There is not a literal blind person gaining sight, but it is those who are blind to the injustices of the Kingdom.
- Those who are deaf to the cries of the needy.
- Those who fein lame and those who use their tongue for harm.
- A message that the joy of the world, is meant for those who seek out God’s justice within it.
Joy to the World! The Savior Reigns!!!
We continue to see both the hope and peace, and recognize the call to each as we live out the joy of the world.
THE KINGDOM COMES:
We look towards Judah as an opportunity to know and understand that it does not come in faith of principalities or nationalities, but it comes in faith for God and God’s Kingdom.
What we are left to wrestle with is how are we making justice out of the joy that God offers the world?

BEECH GROVE NOTES
11 A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. 2 The spirit of the Lord shall rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. 3 His delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. He shall not judge by what his eyes see or decide by what his ears hear, 4 but with righteousness, he shall judge for the poor and decide with equity for the oppressed of the earth; he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked. 5 Righteousness shall be the belt around his waist and faithfulness the belt around his loins. 6 The wolf shall live with the lamb; the leopard shall lie down with the kid; the calf and the lion will feed together, and a little child shall lead them. 7 The cow and the bear shall graze; their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. 8 The nursing child shall play over the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put its hand on the adder’s den. 9 They will not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain, for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea. 10 On that day the root of Jesse shall stand as a signal to the peoples; the nations shall inquire of him, and his dwelling shall be glorious. — Isaiah 11:1-10
CHRISTMAS CARDS FROM ISIAH: REIGN OF PEACE
LEAD-In From Last week:
- We lay down our “weapons” then we seek the act that unites us together.
- Last week called us to the hope of peace.
- Laying down our arms and allowing them to be transformed is a sign we are willing to work together…now comes the actual work…
“Peaceable Kingdom Theology”
- Isaiah 11 shows us, not only get a promise of hope, but we get the very image of hope itself.
- “Lion and lamb” imagery present in this passage
Don’t be political…Why?
- Politics is about our life together
- Inherently we should care about that as a church because churches play a large role in community and community building.
‘A Reign of Peace,’
- Isaiah calls for it in this word from the Lord
- He lays out the true goal of what that peace can and should look like…how we are called to coexist together.
DIVING INTO ISAIAH 11:
- There is not an ambiguity of differences, but a coexistence of differences that sees harmony and peace even amongst differences.
- Example from the animals:
- The lamb knows what the wolf is capable of and yet lays down with it anyways, and reciprocally the wolf, knowing what the lamb offers lays down with it none the less.
- An understanding of trust that honors the created living-ness of both creatures in which neither seeks to harm the other.
JEWISH HISTORY:
The Jewish people longed for this leader who could lead them in this prophecy of peace. A leader who could overcome the differences with warring nations and bring about God’s peace.
We interpret Jesus through the lens of Jewish history that gives birth to our own tradition.
In the Gospel of John 15:5 we hear Jesus proclaim, “I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing.”
Jesus is taking this idea of a leader ushering in an era of peace, falls less on the physical actions of God themselves, and more on the actions of the Spirit of God within each of us.
That role of peace making is in our hands.
If Jesus is the root, then we must be willing to come forth in the name of Jesus as peacekeepers.
peace is a 2-way street:
- We must be willing to do the work, and we must be willing to admit error and have compassion and empathy within the process.
- The wolf and the lamb do not just put their differences aside and lay down without the lamb forgiving the wolf for trying to eat them, and without the wolf forgiving the lamb for the skeptical judgement the lamb offers.
- Both must lay aside differences and be willing to see each other as created in the image of the one who created them.
THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: Jesus comes to earth to offer the example by which we live…will we allow his image to be our image of lasting peace in the world?

Scripture 1 After this Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, also called the Sea of Tiberias. 2 A large crowd kept following him because they saw the signs that he was doing for the sick. 3 Jesus went up the mountain and sat down there with his disciples. 4 Now the Passover, the festival of the Jews, was near. 5 When he looked up and saw a large crowd coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread for these people to eat?” 6 He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he was going to do. 7 Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii would not buy enough bread for each of them to get a little.” 8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him, 9 “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish. But what are they among so many people?” 10 Jesus said, “Make the people sit down.” Now there was a great deal of grass in the place, so they sat down, about five thousand in all. 11 Then Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks he distributed them to those who were seated; so also the fish, as much as they wanted. 12 When they were satisfied, he told his disciples, “Gather up the fragments left over, so that nothing may be lost.” 13 So they gathered them up, and from the fragments of the five barley loaves, left by those who had eaten, they filled twelve baskets. 14 When the people saw the sign that he had done, they began to say, “This is indeed the prophet who is to come into the world.” — John 6:1-14 Sermon Notes “A true selfless act always sparks another.” - Klaus, Netflix Movie JESUS AS LORD: John is focused on how Jesus transcends our own understanding, and to present a Lordship figure in opposition to the Roman rule of Caesar as Lord. Jesus sought for the world to know exactly who God is, and the life they offered.
THIS SIGN SHOWS: …less about what Jesus does in this sign than the actions that happen because of who Jesus is. UNPACKING THE PASSAGE: The crowd is gathers because of who Jesus is The sign offers to us an opportunity to see the full nature of the Kingdom that is gather Points to the role Jesus plays in sustaining us for the journey. The nature of this sign draws us towards the sustaining and communal nature that is the Kingdom. Two ideas in this sign that offer a perspective of the Kingdom that Jesus is bringing.
The generosity of the crowd The actions of the crowd itself
Jesus is moved to provide food for all the people gathered. Then this small boy offers his meal, not understanding the work that Jesus can do even when the offering seems small.
Whether through a supernatural multiplication, or the movement of hearts in the community to offer what they have the food is multiplied… We learn what happens when we offer even the little we may have, as well as the nature in which Jesus will feed us, spiritually that is. When Jesus works in a spiritual way in our lives he can turn all that we give him into sustenance for the journey we are on. It comes from our engagement with Christ, and bringing who we are. Then we recognize how what we bring is multiplied by the community that is around us and how Jesus moves through them (that is when we open up what we have to this community and what it can offer to others). The Kingdom of God takes the little we may feel we have and it multiplies it and does so in a way that helps to nourish the entire community. The question is are we willing to allow this work to happen? This sign shows us and points us to the ways in which the multiplication of these small selfless acts in our faith can be what both unite us together as community, and identify in our sustenance of the journey. The Kingdom calls us to come together as community, and for the grace we bring, no matter how small it feels, to be multiplied by the grace of God and the...

In the final week of our Women in the Bible Series we look at the biblical figure of Lydia. Paul and Timothy meet a strong and empowered women and Philippi and lay the foundation for the Philippian Church in the process. Lydia's leadership and willingness to be a part of this community give us all a lesson in our own role as leaders as well as the encouragement of others to lead as well. How is God calling you to lead? How can you be encouraging of all persons to lead?

In the sixth week of our series on women of the Bible, we explore Jesus' interaction with the woman at the well. This Samaritan woman who was so transformed by the witness of Christ did not allow any obstacles to get in the way of sharing her own witness and testimony of what happened and lead others to encounter Christ as well. How are we surrounding ourselves with witnesses that feed our own knowledge and understanding of Christ and thereby encountering Christ ourselves?

In the fourth week of our series on women of the Bible we explore two Hebrew midwives named Shiphrah and Puah. In there role as midwives they are asked to do something unthinkable by the King of Egypt, and their decision teaches us what it means to stand with those who are oppressed. It shows us that we do not sacrifice our nature of morality to be a part of society. Are we willing to be agents of God's love and grace even if it means a shift in the dynamics of power for the world?

This week we continue our series in the first chapter of the Gospel of Mark. Having come back out of the wilderness Jesus begins to preach and teach. He then does the work of gathering around him those who will be some of his closest learners to carry the message of the Kingdom. What do the words "Follow Me" mean to the disciples Jesus is calling and to us today?
Scripture Text: Mark 1:4-13
Week 1 of our "Get Down to Business" Sermon Series as we explore the 1st chapter of the Gospel of Mark. We are going to be unpacking ways in which we are called to action through our faith in Jesus.
We begin this first week by looking at Jesus' baptism and what it means for us to be baptized, but also what our baptism means as we ourselves enter the wilderness.
