I am from the island of Hawaiʻi. Raised on family ʻāina that was given to my great great grandfather through a Royal Patent Land Grant in 1850. I am the 5th generation to be raised on family land with all of our kupuna, including my parents, buried on the property. My father was a manaleo, native Hawaiian speaker and chose not to teach me ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi as he reflected on his time of being punished in school for speaking Hawaiian. Growing up, I intently watched and learned from my parents. My mother, a nurse, loved working with adults with mental illness who needed someone in their lives to see them through their issues - she used the art of inclusion to build their purpose in life. My fatherʻs knew how to deal in a western space at the same time being true to his ancestral knowledge and protective of all things Hawaiian - kind yet a force to reckon with.
These features led me to do what I am doing today in a heavily cultivated western non-Hawaiian space.
I have a kuleana that requires me to mālama with aloha with an end goal of pono.
Iʻve been a musician in Waikīkī for 3 decades, recorded several recordings, garnered several awards for music and a couple for community engagement. I worked at a non-profit organization for near;y 20 years serving adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Iʻve been at the Hyatt Regency for 7 years as their Director of Hawaiian Culture and Community Relations. Along with some friends we created a small community organization called The Hawaiian Music Perpetuation Society - preserve, promote, perpetuate Mele Hawaiʻi.

Consuelo Gouveia was born and raised on the island of Lāna'i. This is the start of her 20th year as a teacher and her 14th year at HKM. She started my career in the DOE and was wanting something different. HKM holds a special place for her as she spent majority of her career here. The teachings and pedagogy of this school was the means and ways of how she learned growing up on the tiny island of Lāna'i. She started at HKM as Program Director and moved back to the classroom to teach grade 6 and then helped open up the elementary division of the school to include grades 4 and 5. From 4th through 6th grade, students learn about the ahupuaʻa system of land management and how changes in that system over time have impacted the people and culture of Hawaiʻi. She currently teaches grades 4 and 5 Papa Kīhāpai.

Twinkle Borge is the leader of Pu‘uhonua O Wai‘anae, a village of 250 people living unhoused on State land adjacent to the Waianae Boat Harbor. She has organized her village into a powerful asset for the wider community that offers safety, healing, and purpose to people who've lost their housing. POW residents serve Waianae in a variety of ways, including conducting regular cleanups all across the Waianae Coast, feeding and clothing residents of other houseless encampments, and distributing back to school supplies each year to both houseless and housed families in need. In 2018, Twinkle and others led an effort to defend the village from the threat of State eviction, then spent the next year and a half raising funds to purchase land that the village could relocate to. In 2020, Twinkle and the village completed the purchase of 20 acres in Waianae Valley for their permanent home, and are now working on construction. She is also a member of the Steering Committee of Hui Aloha.
James Koshiba - In 2015, frustrated by the explosion of homelessness in Hawaii, and dwindling compassion for those on the street, James pitched a tent in a large urban encampment and forged relationships with people experiencing homelessness. He later became a supporter and student of Pu‘uhonua O Wai‘anae, a self-organized village of more than 250 people living unhoused at the Waianae Boat Harbor. Through these relationships, he began to understand homelessness as a problem of severed connections with place and community. He co-founded Hui Aloha, to demonstrate how re-building community with those who are marginalized is key to solving some of our most persistent social problems, including homelessness. Today, Hui Aloha partners with people on the street to launch service projects in their communities, reconnecting them with housed neighbors, and help both housed and unhoused people find healing and purpose together. HA is now working to build affordable homes for those who cannot afford housing in Hawaii, which has the largest gap between housing costs and wages of any state in the nation. Prior to Hui Aloha, James co-founded and was Executive Director of Kanu Hawaii, which worked to build movement for sustainability. He was born and raised on Oahu, Hawaii and spent several years on the continent earning degrees from Brown University and the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.
