WHAT IS “WOKENESS”—AND HOW DOES IT COMPARE WITH A BIBLICAL WORLDVIEW?
In this episode of the Bible and Theology Matters podcast, Dr. Paul D. Weaver interviews Dr. Neil Shenvi, author of Postwoke: A Biblical Vision of Race, Gender, and Sexuality, for an in-depth discussion about woke ideology, critical theory, intersectionality, cultural Marxism, and the challenge these ideas present to the Christian worldview. Dr. Neil Shenvi shares his remarkable journey from skepticism to faith in Jesus Christ and explains how the very tools he learned in a class designed to challenge Christianity ultimately helped him see the historical evidence for the resurrection of Jesus. He also discusses the intellectual and personal barriers he had to overcome before taking Christianity seriously. The conversation then turns to the ideas behind contemporary “wokeness.” What does the term “woke” actually mean? Where did it come from? How is it connected to critical theory and neo-Marxism? Dr. Shenvi explains the core concepts of critical theory, including the social binary of oppressors and oppressed, hegemonic power, lived experience, and social justice. The discussion also examines intersectionality and how identity categories such as race, gender, class, sexuality, and physical ability are viewed within contemporary critical theory. Dr. Shenvi explains how these ideas influence culture, education, churches, and the way people understand truth and authority. Dr. Weaver and Dr. Shenvi also discuss the importance of understanding these ideas carefully rather than simply reacting to them. They explore why Christians should examine primary sources, recognize where certain theories may contain elements of truth, and then evaluate those ideas through the lens of Scripture. Finally, Dr. Shenvi explains why he wrote Postwoke as a more accessible follow-up to his earlier work, Critical Dilemma, and how Christians can respond to cultural confusion with truth, wisdom, humility, and grace.

Is there archaeological evidence that the Israelites (Hebrews) really lived in Egypt? Many skeptics claim the Exodus never happened and that the biblical account is merely legend. But what does the archaeological evidence actually reveal? * Why the authority and sufficiency of Scripture must come first
* The dangers of political and cultural definitions of evangelicalism
* How celebrity pastors and conference culture can distort the faith
* The difference between theological, cultural, and political evangelicals
* The five fundamentals of authentic evangelical identity
📖 The Five Fundamentals Discussed:
1. The supremacy and authority of Scripture
2. The centrality of Jesus Christ and the gospel
3. Personal evangelism and missions
4. Participation in theological education
5. Consistent involvement in the local church

Was the Apostle Paul a Slave? | Dr. Mark Fairchild on Paul’s Early Life as Saul the Zealot
Was Paul once a slave? If so, how did his early life shape his theology, mission, and message? In this compelling episode of the Bible and Theology Matters podcast, Dr. Paul Weaver sits down with Dr. Mark Fairchild to discuss his groundbreaking book, Paul's Enslavement: The Early Life of Saul the Zealot. Together, they explore the provocative thesis that the Apostle Paul may have been a former slave—and how that possibility sheds powerful new light on his language of slavery, freedom, adoption, redemption, and identity in Christ.
Dr. Fairchild draws from the Book of Acts, Paul’s letters (especially Galatians), early church tradition from Jerome, and the historical writings of Josephus to examine:
-Paul’s Roman citizenship and how slaves could receive citizenship through
-manumission -The “Synagogue of the Freedmen” in Acts 6
-The meaning of stigmata in Galatians 6:17
-Honor, shame, and status in the first-century Mediterranean world
-How slavery differed from modern conceptions of 16th–19th century chattel slavery
-Why does Paul use slavery and adoption language more than any other New Testament writer
-How Saul’s zealotry transformed after his encounter with Christ on the Damascus Road
This conversation also explores Paul’s rabbinic training under Gamaliel, his intense persecution of the early church, and how his radical conversion reshaped his understanding of identity, freedom, and gospel ministry.
If you want deeper insight into:
-The historical Paul: First-century slavery in the Roman world
-The background of Galatians: Paul’s theology of freedom and redemption
-How archaeology and ancient sources illuminate Scripture
…you won’t want to miss this episode. Dr. Fairchild also discusses his extensive research in Turkey (ancient Asia Minor) and his work on Paul’s “unknown years” in Cilicia.

📖 Is the New Testament Trustworthy? | Reliability, Archaeology & the Resurrection (Part 2)
Is the New Testament historically reliable? Can we trust the Gospels as accurate records of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection? In this powerful episode of the Bible and Theology Matters Podcast, Dr. Paul Weaver continues his in-depth conversation with Dr. Benjamin Shaw, author of Trustworthy: 13 Arguments for the Reliability of the New Testament. In Part 2 of this two-part series, we explore some of the strongest historical, archaeological, and transformational evidence supporting the truth of the New Testament—including hostile sources, archaeological discoveries, and the famous Minimal Facts Argument for the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.
🔍 In This Episode, You’ll Learn:
✅ Why embarrassing details in the Gospels actually support their authenticity
✅ How hostile sources like Tacitus confirm key events of Jesus’ life
✅ What archaeology reveals about Caiaphas, crucifixion, and the early church
✅ Why early Christian transformation matters for historical reliability
✅ What the Minimal Facts Argument is—and why it’s so powerful
✅ How scholars across belief systems agree on core resurrection facts

Is Homosexuality Normal? In this episode of Bible and Theology Matters, host Paul Weaver sits down with Dr. Rosaria Butterfield to discuss the first lie addressed in her book Five Lies of Our Anti-Christian Age: “Homosexuality is Normal.” Drawing from her background as a former tenured professor of English and Women’s Studies, a scholar of critical theory and queer theory, and a former LGBTQ activist, Dr. Butterfield explains why the concept of homosexual orientation as an immutable identity is a modern invention, not a timeless reality. She traces its roots to 19th-century thought, engaging figures such as Freud, Marx, Darwin, and Michel Foucault, and contrasts these ideas with a biblical anthropology grounded in Scripture. Dr. Butterfield shares her powerful testimony of conversion to Christ, explains how the shift from behavior to identity has reshaped cultural and ecclesiastical thinking, and warns Christians against adopting the moral language and ideological categories of the secular left—including terms like sexual orientation, cisgender, pronouns, and sexual minority—which ultimately undermine the gospel.
This conversation also addresses:
• Why homosexuality as an ontological category contradict biblical teaching
• How language functions as ideology, not neutrality
• The dangers of parachurch compromise and theological drift
• Why repentance—not rebranding—is essential for faithfulness
• How the church can love prodigals without surrendering biblical truth
• Why real hope requires change through Christ, not affirmation without transformation
This episode is a must-watch for Christians seeking clarity, courage, and compassion in a confused cultural moment.

Is the Christmas story based on blind faith—or solid historical evidence? In this special Christmas episode of Bible and Theology Matters, Paul Weaver explores how biblical archaeology directly affirms the historicity of the Christmas story. From ancient Babylonian ration tablets to the massive stone architecture of Herod the Great, archaeology confirms the people, places, and political realities described in the Gospels.
🔍 In this episode, you’ll discover:
-How the Jehoiachin Ration Tablet proves the survival of the Davidic line
-Why the Christmas story begins in Babylon—not Bethlehem
-Archaeological evidence for Herod the Great, his paranoia, brutality, and building projects
-How sites like the Herodium, Caesarea Maritima, and the Jerusalem Temple confirm the Gospel timeline
-Why the Massacre of the Innocents (Matthew 2) fits perfectly with what we know of Herod from Josephus
-How archaeology strengthens confidence in the historical reliability of Scripture
Far from undermining faith, archaeology reveals that the Christmas story is rooted in real history, real kings, real places, and real events—exactly as the Bible records.
📖 “When the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son…” (Galatians 4:4)

Should believers speak in tongues today? Is the Book of Acts prescriptive for Christians—or simply descriptive of what happened in the first century? And how do modern Charismatic and Pentecostal practices compare to the biblical gift of tongues? In this in-depth episode of the Bible and Theology Matters Podcast, Dr. Paul Weaver (Associate Professor of Bible Exposition at Dallas Theological Seminary and Professor of Bible & Theology for the National Theological College and Graduate School) carefully examines what Scripture actually teaches about speaking in tongues. Drawing from Acts 2 and 1 Corinthians 12–14, Dr. Weaver explains:
✅ The true biblical meaning of “tongues” (glōssai)
✅ The difference between Acts 2 tongues and Corinthian tongues
✅ 12 biblical principles Paul gives for the use of tongues
✅ Why tongues were a sign for unbelievers
✅ The biblical case that tongues have ceased
✅ Why a “private prayer language” is not found in Scripture.
You’ll also hear Dr. Weaver’s personal story of growing up in charismatic churches and how a careful study of God’s Word changed his understanding of this controversial topic.
