I'm interested in a pair of cataraft flip lines. I have a 14ft wave destroyer and there is 90 inches between the internal front and back D-rings. I do not see 90 inches on your size chart. Any chance you will have something that will work on your River Hardware website?

Just listened to your latest podcast on river shoes. Take a look at the Korkers Devil's Canyon (Portland, OR). They are flexible and have a BOA lacing system. Best part, they have interchangeable soles depending on your substrate.
Wading boots have used felt soles for decades; they are All about surface area. Felt soles with metal studs, and you're an all-star on slick rocks (terrible for boats, though). If you need to hike to put it in, use the Vibram rubber lug soles, then switch to felt soles. They make some ugly shoes and sandals too.

I have (had) a dream to do a low water Illinois River trip in my Packraft. [My friends] ran the river in the ‘70s in inner tubes. Yup. I guided on the Illinois for a couple seasons late ’70’s-early ’80’s but have not been back. Whaddah ya think about my idea? I don’t want an epic (those days are mostly behind me) but would LOVE to get back. Any thoughts on water level, whether this is a crazy idea, or any other thoughts are very much appreciated.

Hey Zach! I’ve heard you talk about having good river shoes on many episodes. I’ve worn keens for years on day trips and short overnighter’s. However, the amount of sand I got in them on the lower salmon this year over a 6 day trip caused a lot of uncomfortable rub spots. Plus, if I need to get out mid river, or walk to a scout, I need some better stability. What are your recommendations for brands? Are they typically brands you need to wear socks with? Thanks!

Hey Zach, hope you had a great summer season. In perhaps a reflection of how my year has been going , following up on a chat we had back in March at the Class IV School. Would love to get your thoughts/recommendations on a 2-person cataraft for Chrys and I that would be:
- Big enough for two seats (Chrys' back doesn't do well with coolers/dry boxes)
- Small enough to be movable by two people, even if one tube at a time (prefer < 80 lb per tube)
- Take down frame
- Can be rigged for either day trips (most often) with two seats, or for 4-5 day lightweight overnights
Any thoughts on a good fit, and who is doing good packages these days?

I'm always looking for more efficient ways to do things. Right now, I roll my cam straps like this and throw them in a mesh bag. This certainly beats the squirrel's nest of unwrapped straps in a bag, but do you know of a better way?

I just got a 24 year old Wing 14" raft that was sitting in a loft for a long time it was rolled up for years with vary few river days on it . It was built in 1997 and the serial # is not in the archives at wing inflatables . The Boat looks good but I am worried about if the fabric was compromised with age and whether I should be concerned . The material feels like urethane fabric stiff and holds air well overnight. Should I be concerned running class 3-4 mostly Rogue and easy rivers? How are your older Wing boats holding up?

Hey man, I was watching your last episode and heard you say you were struggling to find material for the cat flip line that would stay tight to the boat and yet stretch so you can stand up further when reflipping the boat. What if instead of finding different material you just tied a 2' long line or strap to the middle of the stretchy flip line making a T shape. This can be a pretty short strap or piece of rope that while yes it is dangling below the boat it is only 2' or so and isn't any more dangerous than the bungie line. This would allow you to keep the bungie tight and extend the reach when you are reflipping.

I recently R2ed down Gore Canyon on the Colorado for the first time. I went because the water level was perfect, the group was trustworthy, and I personally think I am experienced enough for class V. I have 2 years commercial guiding experience and 6 years of private boating, mostly in class IV. My R2 partner and I hit all our lines perfectly and it was an incredible day.
That being said, I was still surprised at the difficulty and danger level of the river. To me, rafting class V consistently seems like you are rolling the dice on getting hurt or killed. Some class V rapids come down to a wave surging at the right time or the wrong time. Unlike class I-IV, it looks like the difference between swimming and not swimming is not purely skill, but also some randomness. If you hit a class V rapid often enough, you may find yourself in a sieve simply because you got unlucky.
Do you agree? Or do you think that with enough training, experience, fitness, and skill, people can raft class V with total control over their situation. I would like to think that this is true, because damn did I love Gore Canyon...

Hello!I'm a big fan of Gear Garage! I saw the video on foot cups which was great and I had a few more questions about foot cups. I manage a university student led outdoor recreation program. We have a 12' raft that has two thwarts. The center compartment is an awkward span for one paddler to use the thwarts to lock themselves in. We were thinking about putting a set of foot cups in the center compartment to help with the span issue, as well maybe fit two people on each side for that center compartment rather than jsut two. I would love any thoughts you all have on footcup placement, installation tricks, etc. that you might have for this situation.

Hey! I love your youtube channel. I just bought a 2022 Aire Tributary 16ft from my late neighbor. I was wondering if you had any videos or pointers on cleaning, polishing, or general upkeep outside of just keeping it out of the sun. I want to make this boat last a long time, so I want to be sure I'm taking care of it.
Topic: HIKO GUARDIAN 3.D PFD Review?
I know that many of us are still looking for a high buoyancy PFD that is more friendly to rafting and I came across the HIKO GUARDIAN 3.D PFD. This is a European company, and does not have US Coast Guard recognition, but I think that the ISO certification may satisfy rangers? Also, any chance you can get them to send one over for you to review? It appears to have some nice features, and, as you have mentioned before in previous reviews it actually DOES increase the amount of buoyancy as the size increases: 19.1 lb for lg/xl, and 20.23 lb for the 2XL.
One specific thing that I'd like to see tested is that the shoulder straps are "stretchy" which seems great for comfort, but potentially not great if someone is trying to pull you out of the water.

Hi - I'm hoping you can help me choose a life jacket. I do mostly class III-IV rivers, and occasionally a IV+ or V rapid. Because I'm not a great swimmer and because I have Parkinson's, I'd like a life jacket better than what guides typically provide. Should I buy a Type 1, Type 5, or something else?

What are your thoughts on putting a sealed floor pocket in the boat? More maneuverable but more likely to flip? Will the sealed floor be an advantage in low water on the Middle Fork?

Hi Zach,We both know how hard Wing thwart movement is. I found a nice, somewhat elegant solution. Can you comment on my fix, explained below?I appreciate your suggestion to girth hitch the stock straps. A great tip, but still takes lots of time to add or move/remove a thwart. The stock straps are super stiff and difficult to manage.I bought these smaller cam straps (8 per thwart) on Amazon; Ayaport Lashing StrapsVery easy to move thwart now.I girth hitched them. The cam buckle placement has to be as shownIf the buckle is too close to the D ring, they can come loose by getting compressed between boat and thwart. And the flush part of the buckle should face the thwart, not the boat.It works great so far. Thoughts?

Hey there, saw Tate's live report of you lining a Sotar Rogue, with a single line at Husum yesterday. Planning a trip that will involve lining gear boats past a class 5 rapid (no waterfall involved). Any suggestions on technique, ropes, and line attachment locations to get some success. Remember some time ago you and Aaron discussing lining a bit. Also, never seen anyone lining boats in the Grand Canyon, I suppose it would be terribly uncool, especially to post on Youtube, but some of the rapids look like they might be able to be lined as a safe alternative at some flows. Any thoughts or suggestions greatly appreciated, thanks so much.

I seem to recall from Gear Garage vids late last year or early this one that you mentioned Watershed Drybags is coming out with a new-and-improved line of drybags with improved/burlier fabric. Any updates on this?
I have a Chatooga duffel that I use and really like but also have a Grand Canyon private trip this fall (late October launch from Lee's Ferry) - thinking that a Colorado or Mississippi duffel with enhanced fabric could be just the ticket for my primary dry duffel for that trip and beyond.

I love your knowledgeable videos.Wondering if you care to share your thoughts on a couple boats I am looking at. I’ve owned a drift boat for two decades and buying my first raft to access more difficult water for Spey fishing away from the crowds. I’m looking at an aire 130R and an aire super duper puma. I most often fish the upper sandy, upper Clackamas, and lower deschutes. Spey fishing is done while wading so not looking for all that fishing crap on my boat. Just a simple NRS big horn frame with an anchor drop. I’ll do overnighters on the deschutes but only a couple of nights. I’ve usually got one or two other people with me, but we take lightweight backpacking gear.
I have one more question for you guys that I’d love to hear you explore… comparison of an Aire Tributary 14 vs. Aire 143d. The wireframes on these boats seem similar to me, but I’m a novice. I'm going to buy a raft rather than rent one for a MFS trip in early July. I'm torn between the Hyside Mini Max or the Max 12. We are very experienced kayakers and will be packing light, and there will be oar rigs to carry some bigger group stuff if needed. Are the oar rigs going to leave us in the dust? Any thoughts on the MiniMax vs the Max 12? After the one trip down the MFS, the boat will be spending the rest of its life on NC/WV rivers. Thanks

I have been paddle guiding, rowing, and kayaking for over 20 years. Most of my rafting experience is class 3 and 4.I have a 1998 Hyside raft. The floor is intact and does not leak but the i-beams have all blown out. I have been continuing to use it on class 3 water since the i-beams failed. Obviously it does not track as well as it used to, but it still seems fine overall.Do you think I should be concerned about anything? Do you think that this floor situation will cause the raft to perform significantly worse in class 4 water?Given the age of the raft, I don't plan to spend $1,000 for a new floor. The yellow rub strake is starting to peel off and I expect that over the next few years, other parts of the raft will slowly begin to degrade.

Montana is removing the pit toilets on one of its Permitted Rivers this year. I've watched your videos on the Selway Fab Riverbank Groover. I bought one, there are a couple of things I don't like about it. But I'll leave it at that.
I plan to use the 780 microbiologic chemical. Do you find that strong enough throughout a MF trip? Or do you add something extra everyday?My trip will be 15people 5days. Almost everyone will be first time Groover users, so smell is going to be an issue for them. Hoping to get buy with 1 vault. If not 5gal bucket and gamma will be the backup vault.
Also with the pit toilets some of ladies would discard their "products" right into the pit toilets. I want to eliminate any chances of that happening in my groover. What's your system for Feminine hygiene at the groover in bear country?

I recently bought a Hyside Mini Max and it’s been a wild ride. I’ve flipped it a few times, been tossed out, surfed and generally humbled on runs that were pretty smooth in bigger boats.
I have a been running R2 and also have a frame, I find rowing it to be super fun.
I like a challenge and am ok getting a beat down on occasion but starting to wonder if a cat boat makes more sense for the harder stuff I want to be rowing like Wind, Hood, Illy etc. I don’t have much experience with cats and want to stay sharp in a raft for trips like Grand Canyon, MFS etc.
What are your thoughts on these little boats as someone who enjoys rowing challenging water?

I saw some semi dry suits on craigslist and they seemed ok, but then someone said they are "unsafe". I assume neoprene neck and wrist are more permeable than rubber but is this "unsafe" for rafting? I am buying for my wife and teenage daughter for class II and III, so not planning on swimming and planning to recover swimmers fast in that water... I can't afford 2 new suits to be used 2-3 times a year...

Recently I was cruising FB marketplace and saw an NRS thigh brace for sale. This is definitely not something I was looking for.
Just wanted to get your thoughts on this thing. Appears to me to be more of a hazard or potential death trap than a necessity. Any IRF implications? It's probably not in your wheelhouse but how does NRS get away with selling something like this? It seems like more of a problem and lurking liability than their letter opener/river knife.

Zac, I have a bone to pick with you. For the record, I have submitted my question twice through the appropriate channels and there has been radio silence. I’m watching as I type, the YouTube episode titled, “Sawyer Paddles & Oars Q&A: Featuring Zac Kauffman. You are not making any sense. On one hand you say your oar length formula is the Bible and on the other hand you answer a question if 11’ oars would be good for a Hyside 16’ boat with a response like you’re shooting from the hip. That is essentially the same question I tried to ask when I began the journey to purchase my dream boat in July 2022. I decided on a Hyside 16 Pro XT as my main multi-day rig. I went through River Boat Works in Salida, CO for my frame. Next on the list was ordering the oars and blades. I scoured the internet trying to find guidance on oar length, which led me to your videos and the oar length formula. I didn’t have my boat yet and I had to estimate using Clint’s knowledge from River Boat Works and a post from mountainbuzz.com. At the time, I used 87” as the distance between oarlocks. Using your oar length formula I calculated 11.8’. Of note the actual distance between oarlocks on my boat is 89”, which calculates to be 12’. Did you know they don’t make the MX-G oar longer than 11’ at Sawyer. Ultimately, I went with 11’ oars because I couldn’t get anything bigger in the 1.75” diameter MX-G line. I’ve used the oars on one multi-day trip and they seem okay. However, I’m hearing you say that 10.5’ will be a better fit for a Hyside 16’ boat not knowing if its the XT version or not. Furthermore, you are not making any sense. I appreciate what you do for the rafting community and I enjoy your content. Thanks for reading.

Topic: Tricky boat repair location
Hey guys, love the show and all you do, It’s such a great resource! I have a tricky Hypalon boat repair question. I have a small hole about the size of a pinky fingernail. Right beside some seam tape with only about a 1/16” of material before the edge of the tape. It’s an older boat so I don’t really want to lift the tape to put the patch under. Should I put a patch over the whole thing, seam edge and hole and hope for the best? Or should I put a larger patch over the hole with the patch edge bumping against the seamtape edge and then put a smaller patch over the seam where the new patch and seam edge meet. Hope that’s not too confusing, I’ll try to attach a picture so you can see what I’m working with. Appreciate any guidance or suggestions you could provide. Thank you so very much!

Just looking for a quick opinion on rafts, I;ve watched quite a few of your videos. I'm currently running a 14 RMR but I'm wanting to upgrade my boat. What would your thoughts be if I could pick any boat? I'm considering Wing, Sotar, or Maravia, mostly. My wife and I mostly. Running class 2-4 primarily. We run a lot of multi-day trips here in Montana. (Fishing, camping, etc.) also like to pull out the frame and run it as a paddle boat on the Lochsa. I like Sotar and Marivia, but i'm really thinking of a Wing but I have absolutelty no opinion on one because I don't know anyone up here that has any. I like my RMR but it rides really low and when it's loaded and it's HEAVY! I want somehting tough and low maintenance and will look sharp! I know you push a 16 footer. 16' is pretty big for us since it's primarily it's just the 2 of us (and we have to launch it in some crappy sports by ourselves sometimes) I would appreciate your opinion. Hi guys, I'm a recent subscriber and am enjoying your videos. I'm doing a private trip down the Middle Fork starting Oct. 6. I have two questions. I understand we can expect rain and maybe even snow on the trip. What footwear do you recommend? I know I'll be pushing off rocks and warmth is an issue so I'm thinking about the NRS Storm Boot or Workboot. Thoughts?
Second, in terms of clothes, I have an old splash suit. I also have a pair of Simms fly fishing pant waders (pants only as opposed to chest waders) that I thought I could pair with a high quality Arcteryx raincoat with hood. I would wear layers underneath as needed. Thoughts on this? I looked at your website and I don't believe you sell apparel. Finally, I look forward to taking a trip with you in the near future. Hey Zach, Just wanted to say a big thank you to you and the Gear Garage channel! You inspired confidence and passion to make my first trip down the Middle Fork, and we dealt with the portages in the upper section too! We decided to launch from Boundary with a 16' round boat and 3 duckies lightly loaded, no cooler or dry box. We made it through and ran into your crew at Indian and chatted with Brodie briefly as he wanted to hear about our adventure.
We played leap frog with your trip the rest of the way down and I have some photos of them at camp I'd love to share. I learned a lot on the trip and had a blast despite the difficult conditions and rain in the early days. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and experience, it is much appreciated. I felt like I knew the rapids after watching so many videos but the MFS is a fun challenge!

Did your group rig lines under their boats on the Grand to help someone climb on if there was a flip? Would you run cam straps bow to stern, rig loops of webbing through the lacing in the floor, or rig a line side to side? Also, someone suggested adding a tag line as well since the Grand is so wide and the current so strong. Would you add a tag line to a raft (I’ve only seen them on cats)?
