Hello Hive Fam!

I'm back with another Fintech Flash, where I go over the biggest news happening in Fintech and blockchain over the last week.

Here's what was covered in Episode 22:

Chainlink joins the all time high club. As Bitcoin has been trading sideways the last days, other, smaller coins are on their own wild ride to the top. Coins such as AAVE and (XTZ) increased by almost 20%. Other notable gains were made by Uniswap’s UNI and Cardano’s ADA, which both jumped approximately 10% overnight. The star of the last few days has Chainlink.. The price of the coin, which powers Chainlink’s decentralized oracle network, hit an all-time high over $22.

Polkadot overtakes XRP to become the fourth largest cryptocurrency. .According to figures from leading analytics portal Coingecko, DOT has flipped Ripple’s XRP in terms of market capitalization following a massive gain. The big price move has pushed its market cap to $13.7 billion dollars. The platform is fully interoperable, allowing other blockchains to connect to the network as a sidechain.

The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) has extended the comment period for its controversial rule that would force crypto exchanges to record and report certain transactions. Submitted last month, the proposals would require exchanges to store name and address information for customers transferring over $3,000 per day to private crypto wallets. As of January 8, more than 65,000 comments were submitted with the vast majority of them opposing the proposed regulation.

In the last few months, reports show that major institutional investors have been scooping up Bitcoin in droves. Several major firms have collectively purchased hundreds of millions of dollars worth of Bitcoin, and these publicly-traded firms have adopted Bitcoin as a reserve asset. MicroStrategy, a prominent business analytics platform, has adopted Bitcoin as its primary reserve asset and recently purchased another 590 million dollars worth of bitcoin..

Cryptocurrency exchange eToro has warned customers that trading limits may be put in place due to a surging demand for cryptocurrencies. Katie Evans, the global PR and communications manager at eToro, told Decrypt that, “If the demand for crypto continues we might once again see liquidity issues in crypto markets.”

Ethereum Co-founder Wants to Help Jack Dorsey Decentralize Twitter. Dorsey is an outspoken Bitcoin fan, and his belief in the promise of decentralized technology is a big reason why Twitter is preparing for a potential future move away from centralized service. The tweet thread prompted Charles Hoskinson, the founder of Cardano and co-founder of Ethereum, to encourage Dorsey to open up development on Blue Sky to the community.

Hope you enjoyed it and i'll be back next week for another Fintech ⚡️Flash!

Hello Hive Fam!

I'm back with another Fintech Flash, where I go over the biggest news happening in Fintech and blockchain over the last week.

Here's what was covered in Episode 21:

After Bitcoin hit $42,000 and global market cap soared past the $1 trillion mark, this last weekend put a damper on things. Total market cap is now hovering around $850 billion, losing over 20% in a 24 hour period. Trader and analyst Alex Kruger told CoinDesk that, “Hefty spot selling against an over-levered market caused the price drop,”. Data provided by South Korea-based analytics firm CryptoQuant suggests miner selling did contribute to the price drop as well.

The OCC greenlights national banks to run nodes and stablecoin networks. Monday evening, the Treasury's Office of the Comptroller of the Currency told national banks that they are allowed to run independent nodes for distributed ledger networks. Brian Brooks, who formerly led Coinbase's legal team, has been the Acting Comptroller since May. During his tenure, the office has put out a host of guidance authorizing banks to be more active in crypto and, more recently, barring them from cutting off services to legal industries.

The UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) issued a consumer warning about the risks of investing in cryptocurrency. In its warning, the FCA listed five main risks and concerns associated with “high-return investments based on cryptoassets,” including consumer protection, price volatility, product complexity, charges and fees, and marketing materials. Firstly, the FCA reminded the general public that some digital assets— including the ones promising high returns—may not be regulated..

Novogratz predicts young people will buy Bitcoin with their stimulus checks. A further round of stimulus checks at $2,000 each, recently approved by the House of Representatives, could, from Novogratz's perspective, be further good news for the markets. With the Senate now flipped after the runoff election in Georgia, he noted that: "A lot of stimulus checks will find it's way into the markets. Certainly, when it comes into young people's hands.”

Dan Larimer announced his resignation from his position as Chief Technology Officer on the crypto project Block.one. His tenure with Block.one began in April 2017, the same year it hit world headlines when it raised $4 billion in an Initial Coin Offering to build EOS, a rival blockchain to Ethereum. On his next steps Larimer says that he will continue on his mission to create free market, voluntary solutions for securing life, liberty, property, and justice for all.

Kim Dotcom, political activist and founder of the now-defunct file hosting service MegaUpload, has “officially” joined the Bitcoin Cash (BCH) community, as per a tweet on monday morning. The German-Finnish entrepreneur gained fame in the early 2000s after becoming a dotcom millionaire.

Always so many bloopers and outtakes when filming these things.🙈 Especially when cats are involved! I had a lot of fun filming at my sister's house this week - because we got a whole bunch of new backgrounds and of course... adorable kitties.

I recently started sharing some blooper reels on Twitter... so I figured i'd share it here as well. I figure we could all use a few more laughs in our world... so why not.

Enjoy this week's blooper reel!

Hello Hive Fam!

I'm back with another Fintech Flash, where I go over the biggest news happening in Fintech and blockchain over the last week. I got a little out of the habit of loading them to 3speak during the holidays - but I'm back and excited to start sharing them here again!

Here's what was covered in Episode 20:

Bitcoin has surged to a record high amid rising interest from investors and claims that the volatile cryptocurrency is on the way to receiving mainstream adoption. Having quadrupled in value during 2020, bitcoin began 2021 strongly by breaking through the $30,000 mark for the first time, less than three weeks after first trading above $20k. On Sunday, it hit a new high of more than $34,800, on the 12th anniversary of the bitcoin network being created.

Retail investors are largely uninvolved as Bitcoin price chases $40K. In 2017, Bitcoin’s bull run was largely believed to have been fuelled by retail investors who were placing speculative bets on the BTC market and other smaller-cap cryptocurrencies from the ICO craze. Fast forward to 2020, and the investor landscape has changed dramatically. Institutional investors, who largely remained on the side-lines in the first bull run, have been the face of the rally this time around.

Ethereum has broken a critical price point against Bitcoin, signalling that altcoins may be about to see a surge. Data from Cointelegraph Markets, Coin360 and TradingView showed the ETH/BTC pair pass the essential 0.026 level in just one daily candle on Jan. 3. After staying weak throughout December, Ether has rebounded in the first few days of 2021.

Is XRP the third largest financial collapse of all time? XRP’s market capitalization was roughly $140 billion in January 2018 and has recently slipped under $10 billion,an estimated loss of $130 billion in under three years. This effectively makes the “collapse” of XRP third behind only the $327 billion bankruptcy of Washington Mutual and the failure of investment giant Lehman Brothers — a financial meltdown valued at $691 billion — in 2008.

DeFi Quietly Breaks Records as Investors Lock Up $15 Billion. The biggest projects in the space right now are three lending protocols: Maker, Aave and Compound. This time last year, the amount of money locked in to the DeFi industry stood at $689 million, which is an increase of 2,077%. At one point, a billion dollars a week was being added to the total value locked into the industry last year.

Around 89% of the max Bitcoin supply have already been minted. However, the actual amount of BTC available to use or trade is much lower than the circulating supply suggests. One of the main ways Bitcoin is removed from circulation is by simply being lost. Since Bitcoin owners need access to their private keys or recovery phrase to transfer their Bitcoin, anybody that loses access to these will also lose the ability to spend their funds. It is estimated that approximately 3.7 million Bitcoin are probably gone forever.

Hope you enjoyed it and i'll be back next week for another Fintech ⚡️Flash!

Hello Hive Fam!

What are the current trends within the Mining Pool industry? I sat down with Jesse Phillips, the Business Development Manager for Binance Pool to learn more.

We go over how a mining pool I structured, why it can offer more profitability to miners and how what binance pool is building is different than other solutions on the market.

It was really interesting to learn more about how pairing an exchange and mining pool together can help lower fees and increase profitability to miners because it is taking out the “middle man” essentially between newly mined bitcoins and liquidity on exchanges.

It was a great conversation and I actually learned a lot about this segment of the mining industry. I hope you enjoy our chat together and as always, I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comment section below!

Hello Hive Fam!

The cryptoverse is buzzing over the OCC news because they basically just told US banks that they can treat permissionless, open-source blockchains like Bitcoin and Ethereum the same way they treat SWIFT, ACH, and FedWire.

So this obviously sounds super bullish, but let’s break down exactly what that means and why this is actually a big deal.

So right now when you want to transfer anything from your bank… it typically takes about 3 days. Which isn’t great. In the announcement - the OCC actually said they are looking at this because customers are demanding - faster speeds, efficiency, and lower costs.

Let’s say that I tell my bank that I want to make a transfer to you and I bank with Chase and you are with Wells Fargo. Chase would use a backend ledger system called swift to put in a request with wells Fargo to see if we can do the transaction. Once it’s been validated and confirmed on both sides - the transaction can be settled.

Right now… this old, slow system is basically their only option - but with the OCC giving them permission to explore options with different cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin, ethereum, EOS, USTD etc… those transactions could go from taking 3 days… to being basically instantaneous. Or at least a lot faster than 3 days.

So these are just my initial thoughts on all of this as it comes out - but i’m sure we’ll get a lot more information on what kind of impact this will have as the story continues to unfold.

Hello Hive Fam!

I sat down with Mathias Goldman of Constellation Network to discuss how they are using blockchain technology to implement secure and auditable solutions for complex data sets.

We also chat about the difference between what big data sets need in terms of data management vs. individual retail consumers.

It was a really fun conversation and I’m honestly just starting to wrap my head around everything they are building. I hope you guys enjoy this high-level overview of Constellation Network!

Hello Hive Fam!

I sat down with Joel Edgerton - the COO of Bitflyer to chat about trends in both retail and institutional buying of Bitcoin. They are one of the only exchanges that actually has a license to operate in all three major crypto regions - Asia, Europe and the States.

I really enjoyed getting to learn more about how they approach listing coins and handling customer funds. They actually keep all customer funds in cold storage instead of hot wallets to help protect their customers in the case of some kind of attack - which I thought was really cool.

We also chat on a more macro level about the impact of institutional buying on the price of bitcoin, what we might see in this coming bull run, and the impact of fiat monetary policy on the crypto market.

I really enjoyed our chat together and I hope you do too!

Hello Hive Fam!

What is tax-loss harvesting and how does it work?

Figuring out cryptocurrency taxes can not only be confusing but also kind of overwhelming. Now a lot of us probably aren’t thinking about taxes too much in December, but there may actually be things you can do before year-end to help reduce your tax obligations or even increase your 2020 tax refund… and that’s called tax-loss harvesting.

I’m no tax expert, but I was curious to learn about this and so I’ve teamed up with my friends at TaxBit and worked with their tax attorneys and CPA’s to get a little more information on how this all works and how to better optimize your taxes.

Tax-loss harvesting is essentially the process of strategically selling assets that are currently in loss positions to lower your overall capital gains. It is beneficial to realize losses towards the end of the year in order to receive the tax benefits on your next tax filing. As a reminder, you only trigger taxable events when you sell, trade, or spend your crypto. But, even if you’ve just been buying and hodling - you actually may still have some tax-loss harvesting opportunities. You may be able to leverage losses to increase your tax refund or even offset gains you have from other investments like stocks.

So lets’ walk through a scenario of how tax-loss harvesting works. Let’s say you currently have 1,000 dollars in realized capital gains for the year… but you also currently hold let’s say, a particular crypto with $2,000 of unrealized losses. If you just hang onto that crypto and don’t make any changes - you’ll be on the hook for the full 1,000 dollars in capital gains. However, if you sell the crypto and realize the loss - you will have net capital losses of 1,000 dollars. Rather than owing money to the IRS, by realizing the loss, you will be entitled to an increased tax refund by being eligible for the capital loss deduction.

So where and how do you get started with figuring this all out. Many of us probably use several different exchanges and wallets and so pulling all this data together can be overwhelming. Trying to figure this all out on your own can be very, very difficult, and so a tax software like Taxbit just makes it super simple by automating the process to make sure everything is being calculated, reported, and filed correctly. Their tax optimizer will show you the optimal amount of cryptocurrency to sell in order to maximize your losses, which in turn can increase your tax refund.

I”m excited to keep work with Taxbit’s CPA’s and tax attorneys to make more educational content about crypto and taxes throughout this next tax season, but I wanted to start with this video because I know tax loss harvesting is something a lot of us have questions on and is something that’s kind of time-sensitive to look into between now and the end of the year. If you have any questions at all, leave them below and maybe I’ll be able to address them in a future video. Thanks, guys and stay tuned for more educational crypto tax content coming soon.
