This is hard. Doing things differently is hard.
In this episode, I talk about the excitement of the "aha" moments of insight and clarity. In a recent talk I gave to nutrition students, a brave student shared how hearing the talk was bringing up a lot for her and that she may be ready to get support for her own relationship with food.
There was beauty and pain in that moment - beauty in her vulnerability in sharing and also pain, in how hard it is sometimes for us to realize we need support and then to go through to steps to find it. That moment also solidified the importance of continuing to have this conversation, give these talks, and keep planting these seeds in the dietetics community.
I also talk about how insight is not always enough. Education and "knowing" can start the process, but it is showing up, day after day, for ourselves where the change and growth can happen. Healing also often happens in connection; connection with support people perhaps, but also in connection with our loved ones, our community, and most importantly in connection with ourselves.

On this week’s episode as part of my summer short series, I explore the concept of success.
Often we use metrics as a way to define success, but what are other important ways to redefine success? How does that change how we feel about our progress? Who gets to define our success? In putting ourselves out there, could success be us being courageous enough to just show up? Maybe success is the process of moving into more alignment in our lives when we feel dissonance. Maybe success means being able to meet my family’s needs, my financial needs, and still have room for my hobbies and friends?
I also touch on the idea of feeling like an imposter and how it could be linked to being a beginner but also could be linked to not being qualified. My last musing is on the power of role modeling. As usual, I speak from my current experiences and feelings and hope you can resonate and find value in what I share. If we are alive, we’re on the right track.

Two dietitians, two podcasters - Michelle Yates, RD and I discuss some of the many nuances around intuitive eating and practicing nutrition from a weight-inclusive perspective.
We discuss the work that we do with clients and that our goal is to put ourselves out of business. Who is intuitive eating for? Not for? Is it ever helpful to "diet"?
We both believe in weight-inclusive care AND we dive into some of what we're seeing in the weight-inclusive space online. Sometimes that space can not feel very inclusive when it's landing in the same rigid system as diet-culture or if people are interacting from a place of anger and their own pain and hurt. The in-fighting in the weight-inclusive community can be a big turn-off for people in exploring new ways of thinking and practicing dietetics.
We believe that being able to ask questions and be welcomed in with respect is really important for the weight-inclusive movement if we want to welcome and invite more people in. We believe having grace for people who are curious and learning about weight-inclusive care is very important.
If you love my personal and professional updates, please stay-tuned till the end.

Special Guest: Jesse Saffold, LCSW! My partner in life has agreed to come on the podcast! We discuss therapy and nutrition therapy and how they intersect and overlap around the idea of self-acceptance and unconditional positive regard as foundational to allowing us to make behavior changes in our lives that will benefit our physical and mental health. It is really hard (perhaps impossible) to make lasting changes in our lives when we are coming from a place of self-judgment, shame, guilt, and have a fierce inner-critic. Radical acceptance can help us move forward when we are feeling stuck in unhealthy patterns or habits that aren't serving us any longer. We discuss some practical habits and exercises that can create moments of pause and self-reflection in our busy lives. I end this episode with a brief life and work update. Changes are under-foot this spring!

Celebrate episode 10 with me! Here, I reveal Pillar 3 of the Nutrition Insight Project.
I’ve organized and presented the big ideas behind the Nutrition Insight project into 3 main Pillars. Nothing magical about there being 3 - it's just a convenient way to talk about this process of nutrition change and evolution.
To recap, the first pillar is one of the central tenants that I address with my toolkit and mentorship - developing Nutrition Insight 😊 Developing self-awareness, clarity, intuition, and deep knowing. Being able to tune into our experience - if something is not aligned with our nutrition - eating, body image, exercise habits, health habits, etc., are we ready to make changes? Coming at the process with gentle curiosity and openness, and being awake and honest with ourselves throughout.
Pillar Two is - DOING the thing, working on making the changes to support your physical and mental health. With the foundation of self-compassion, getting back into alignment the best we can. Do I need more structure or less structure with my eating and movement? Can I work on taking care of my body and treating it with unconditional respect? Am I willing to unpack the potential barriers or self-defeating stories that threaten to derail me or pull me back into destructive habits? If I’m overwhelmed, confused, or feel stuck, can we reach out to support people we trust to find the type of support we need?
Pillar three is recognizing and being open to our nutritional needs (and really health needs in general) evolving over time. Not getting too rigid or tied to any one framework, and being open to changing our minds and our habits over time, should that be required to regain our health and equilibrium.
The goal is to be emotionally durable and to have developed robust coping skills such that when changes and challenges come up (which they will), we can keep perspective and course correct, all while keeping in mind the foundation of self-compassion.
I end this episode with a life and work update :) more exciting things are brewing around here.

In this episode, I discuss how to cultivate both self-acceptance and the power of change. I've gathered some of the big themes and main ideas that have helped me and my clients move through hard times and embody the qualities of the people we wish to become. I recap Pillar One of the Nutrition Insight Project, which is around self-awareness and recognizing if we need to (and are ready to) make a change in our nutrition habits. Pillar Two is: DOING IT, making the changes, and living into the person you want to become. This is not a "one-size fits all" approach and there is no "perfect" way to eat. It is about bringing self-acceptance and gentle curiosity to ourselves AND making a commitment to ourselves and keeping that commitment the best we can.
Support people (such as dietitians) can be helpful in the early phases of change to cut through the self-defeating and critical thoughts we may have, provide accountability, and share tools that you can try out along the way. Change can feel really hard in the beginning. Journaling can be a useful tool to build in a pause, self-reflection, and notice patterns. When we fall off track, review our priorities, and move forward in a way that feels in alignment. The goal is to keep showing up with self-compassion. The topic of behavior change is a big one and there is no way I could cover it all in one podcast episode. I hope you will find value in this information and leave feeling empowered. Of course, take what feels helpful and leave what you don't.
I end this episode with a life and work update :) some exciting things are brewing around here.

In this episode, I dig into the Content of the Nutrition Insight Project. Do you have disordered eating? It is not my role (especially from a podcast format) to tell you if you do or do not, however, I share some things to think about. I start this episode with an update on a fraught business meeting, my coping (or struggling to cope) with disappointments, and re-focusing on the goals of the Nutrition Insight Project. I get a little into the scientific literature around nutrition students and dietitians with disordered eating. Acquiring knowledge, building self-awareness, and developing insight is only ONE part of the change process (Pillar One). Each of us needs to decide if and when we might be ready to change. If you feel nutrition change is required to support your physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual health - please know that you are worthy and deserving of support (if you can access it). I end with some good news about the Nutrition Insight Project as we move into springtime in the Pacific Northwest. In today's conversation with Anny Ha, my dietitian colleague and friend, we go pretty deep. She discussed how personal experiences led her to the field of nutrition. We discuss working together at an eating disorder treatment center and how fundamental it was for us to eat with our clients. Eating with clients brings nutrition from abstract ideologies to the table! Eating with clients is an intimate and often intense experience that can really deepen the therapeutic relationship. It has strengthened and informed the nutrition work we do with clients to this day. As Anny had to relocate and find new positions, her circumstances pushed to into taking jobs that seemed totally different from the eating disorder work she had been used to. We talk about how Anny was able to integrate eating disorder work into her work with people who have diabetes. Ellyn Satter has deeply influenced Anny and she discusses how she incorporates Ellyn Satter's eating competence model and hierarchy of feeding into the work she does with her clients.
Anny is a creative, change-maker in the field of dietetics! Here is a link to the article she published with her colleagues on her innovative Eating and Thriving with Diabetes Program (https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/2633559X20925455?journalCode=aipb)
We talk about her experience working side-by-side with weight-centric providers in a prestigious weight loss clinic. She was able to build connections rather than division by sharing her perspective, expertise, and insight with the providers who thought differently from her. Her influence through real human connection has sent of ripple of change through that clinic. Lastly, Anny shares how her personal nutrition insight work continues to deepen and grow even more now that she is a parent.

The tables have turned. In this episode, dietitian supervisor Jess Serdikoff interviews ME for her podcast Empowering Dietitians!
We discuss who I am and why I created the Nutrition Insight Project. What did I have to "unlearn" from my education? I discuss shame around eating disorders, and the additional shame nutrition students/dietitians may experience if they are struggling with disordered thoughts or body image themselves. We discuss signs you may need support as well as some of the barriers that might keep nutrition professionals from reaching out for support. We discuss self-disclosure and being a human and a dietitian. I speak about my dreams for the Nutrition Insight Project for nutrition students, dietitians, and the larger nutrition community and field.

First, I share my feelings of imposter syndrome in launching the podcast. Then, I take a deep dive into examining how to exist within the current social media landscape, which uses a business model that exploits our attention and can cause serious harm for humans.
