Shontice Marie is a singer-songwriter from Bakersfield, CA. Her name and voice may sound familiar to Kern County/Central Valley music fans during her stint as lead vocalist of popular Cali reggae roots band, Hayesfield, who made a name for themselves during the mid aughts, performing and releasing original music. During this time, I also met and established a friendship with the group, featuring them on a 2006 episode of the Bakotunes podcast (which you will hear during this episode, live from Vinny's Bar!), inclusion on the Bakotopia Music Compilation Vol. I (local music comp.), and booking them on shows with my band Mento Buru. In the years to follow, the band parted ways taking members into very different, and in some cases, chaotic life paths. Now, Shontice is back with a new positive outlook on life that includes motherhood, a busy career, and BACK to new music onstage and in the studio. An inspiring country-fied roots, musical second act you are sure to enjoy. Songs included in this episode: "Baja California" - Hayesfield, live Real Talk in-studio performances of "Sunshine" and "Lipstick Outlaw", plus a special bonus: "Backdoor" by Hayesfield.

BIO:
George "The Giant" has been performing professionally since 1991. To date, he has been seen in amusement parks such as Universal Studios and Knott's Berry Farm, publications ranging from "The Globe" and "The National Enquirer" to "Esquire Magazine," and television shows including "Touched By An Angel," local news programs, and even national talk shows. The Giant has toured the U.S. and Canada performing at colleges, night clubs, street fairs, and Renaissance festivals.
At the age of twelve George saw his first sword swallower and fire eater doing things he was told the human body could not do. He was not happy with this explanation. He knew what he saw. So with research and a burning desire to learn, he taught himself how to perform these feats of daring. George is now one of the few sword swallowers in the world. It has been said that George "The Giant" is one of the most complete side show performers around today... and the tallest! - imdb.com

DAVID BLAK (Plascencia) was born in La Colonia Independencia, Tijuana, Mexico. He was raised by a single mother and singer of boleros. At the age of seven, he moved to California to live with his father who was an Aerospace Engineer. Severely grieving the loss of moving from his home country, the warmth of a kind mother and adjusting to American culture, Plascencia found solace in writing and producing hip-hop music. After leaving music behind, he turned his attention to acting and filmmaking. Since 2012, Plascencia has worked on over 40 TV commercials and films including "McFarland USA", "Being Black Enough" and John Legend's music video "Surefire."
In reaction to the lack of Latino diversity in the industry, Plascencia collaborated with Mary-Lyn Chambers debuting "Tijuana," a short film saluting his great-grandparents where he performed the role of his great grandfather. The film screened at Slamdance, Bentonville, Hollyshorts and the Rome International Film Festival. It was nominated for the Imagen Award and won 'Best TV Pilot' at the CFF Chelsey Awards. Sandy Woo-Cater is a subject matter expert on human trafficking issues and has nearly two decades of engagement in the counter-trafficking field. As system project lead for CommonSpirit Health’s Human Trafficking Response Program, she focuses on the intersections of human trafficking and health equity. Sandy creates and supports national strategizes to respond to all forms of trafficking through the lens of cultural humility. In 2022, she published her peer-reviewed article, Unearthing Historical Trauma to Advance Health Equity for Survivors of Human Trafficking.
Sandy’s leadership in anti-trafficking initiatives is informed by a unique hybrid of professional experiences. Her skillset has been shaped by her time in academia as well as her crisis intervention work which directly served trafficked populations fleeing violence. While teaching undergraduate courses and pursuing her doctoral studies in Sociology, with a research focus on the trafficking of Chinese women in 19th Century California, Sandy decided to take a hiatus from academia to build Kern County’s first official human trafficking crisis response program with funding from CalOES. In partnership with the Central Valley Freedom Coalition, this program filled an urgent gap and provided safety and resources for those experiencing labor trafficking and/or sex trafficking throughout the Central Valley. Through this endeavor, Sandy gained first-hand experience out in the field supporting individuals and families fleeing active trafficking situations, partnered in local and federal law enforcement operations, and collaborated in other community initiatives to address trafficking. Additionally, Sandy volunteered to serve as co-director for the Kern Coalition Against Human Trafficking for six years to establish regional and state-wide partnerships to create expansive supportive networks for victims and survivors.
Originally from San Francisco’s Chinatown, Sandy was first in her family to obtain a formal education and have full access to literacy. She is proudly the daughter of immigrants and has committed her life’s work to advocating for vulnerable communities. Originally aired on 3/17/23.
