Over the course of four decades holistic psychotherapist, author, and poet Dr. Ed Tick has dedicated his life to healing the invisible wounds of war. His work transcends borders and conflicts, bringing hope and healing to veterans, trauma survivors, and, most recently, soldiers on both sides of the Ukrainian-Russian war.

Through spiritual practices, deep soul work, and ancient traditions, Ed addresses trauma in ways that modern approaches often fail to do.

“Trauma is cumulative and transgenerational. Our ancestors’ wounds live inside us, and if we don’t stop and heal, the pain only grows. Healing isn’t just for the present—it’s for the past and future, too.” — Dr. Ed Tick

Topics in this Episode:

  • Ed’s innovative approach to preventing and treating PTSD during war, and the challenges he faces working with both Russian and Ukrainian soldiers.
  • The soul-wounding effects of war and the importance of addressing trauma from a spiritual, holistic perspective.
  • How poetry plays a crucial role in healing and reconciliation, particularly through Ed’s book Coming Home in Vietnam.
  • The profound personal connection Ed has with the Russian and Ukrainian conflict, rooted in his family’s history.
  • How Ed’s work with ancient spiritual and healing traditions informs modern approaches to treating PTSD.

In 2024, Dr. Caleigh Campbell opened Refine Physical Therapy, a private practice devoted entirely to helping women, men, and non-binary individuals with pelvic related issues. Refine Physical Therapy is located in Denver, Colorado, and provides specialized Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy.

With a strong foundation in orthopedics as well as Pelvic floor issues, Dr. Campbell offers a full spectrum of treatment to support the whole body.

"It's a very intimate subject, and most people don't talk about it at all. And if they do, they might be saying to someone else: “I've had that for years, that's just, you know, part of being a woman. And it's really not.” --Dr Caleigh Campbell

Meeting women where they are is important to Dr. Campbell. There may be trauma involved, or shame, embarrassment, or a simple lack of knowledge. She reaches out to her patients using compassion, inquiry, and respect.

Many women are relieved to learn they may not need surgery that had been recommended, or can try other options first. Surgery is often an option for things like incontinence, but physical therapy can often be as or more helpful.

As Dr. Caleigh sees it, “You can always do surgery as a last resort, but if physical therapy can take care of it, why not start there?

In this episode, we discuss:

👉🏼 The benefits of physical therapy for the pelvic floor.

👉🏼 The lack of awareness of the specialty among patients and often physicians as well.

👉🏼 The wide array of women who can benefit from PT.

👉🏼 The lack of PT doctors treating pelvic floor issues

.👉🏼 The promise of treatment for incontinence, pregnancy and postpartum, painful intercourse, and more.

👉🏼 The freedom to visit a doctor of physical therapy without a referral (check with your insurer first.)

👉🏼 How shame, embarrassment, pride and and a lack of knowledge prevents women from getting help

👉🏼 How pelvic floor surgery can help women avoid surgery

In this episode, we're joined by the remarkable Dr. Steve Babson, a man who has spent his life studying and teaching the intricacies of labor movements and political dynamics. His latest book, Populism: When America's Farmers Turned Left to Save Democracy, takes us back to the late 1800s, a time when America's farmers rallied against corporate giants to defend democracy. The parallels with today’s political landscape are numerous.

Steve’s career has been anything but ordinary. His life as a professor and labor activist ranged from college classrooms to union halls and factories, to the most unconventional spots, like bowling alleys. His dedication to labor education, showcased through his work at Wayne State University's Labor Studies Center, speaks volumes about his commitment to workers' rights, both within and outside unions. This hands-on experience gives Steve a unique lens through which he views the parallels between past and present political movements.

"Populism is a term applied to a whole range of politicians who, in my estimate, have very little in common." - Steve Babson

In our conversation, Steve and I dive deep into the roots of populism, exploring how it has morphed over time and what it means today. We tackle pressing issues like climate change and the current political climate, all while drawing lessons from the populist farmers of the 1890s who dared to challenge the status quo.

As we inch closer to the 2024 election, understanding the past becomes crucial. Steve's insights not only offer a fascinating look at historical populist movements but also shed light on our contemporary struggles. This episode is a must-listen for anyone keen on grasping the broader implications of populism and its relevance to today's political and environmental debates.

Amidst the 2020 pandemic lockdown, an isolated college student stumbled upon a shocking paradox while watching the news - farmers wasting surplus food, leading to an environmental crisis, while food banks struggled to meet demand. This disturbing dichotomy struck a chord with Aidan Reily, a Brown University junior, and his best friend, James Kanoff, a Stanford junior. Driven to bridge this gap, they rallied their friends, brothers Ben Collierand Will Collier from Connecticut, and successfully marshalled an army of 500 student volunteers. Together, they launched The Farmlink Project.

As of March 2024, this student-powered non-profit has remarkably shifted 165 million pounds of excess farm produce to needy food banks, providing 137,500,000 meals, while simultaneously sparing the environment from 238,145 tons of carbon emissions. An inspiring testament to how proactive minds can turn adversity into a powerful tool for change.

Joining us for How We Change the World Podcast to represent The Farmlink Project is the dynamic Julia DeSantis. A recent graduate, Julia's academic credentials combined with her fervor for environmental preservation have propelled her to the role of Head of Sustainability and Development. Julia’s eloquence and expertise bring Farmlink's mission and efforts to life.

In this episode, we discuss:

• The birth of The Farmlink Project, sparked by the Covid pandemic and the determination of four college students.

• The paradox of food insecurity in the US, set against the backdrop of colossal food waste.

• The disparity in food insecurity across various demographics.

• Farmlink's mission to enable consistent and dignified access to food for all Americans.

• The organization's commitment to the global objective of halving food waste by 2030.

• The intricate interdependence of our food systems and the planet's health.

• The substantial role of food waste reduction in curbing climate change.

• Farmlink's nurturing of future leaders through its network of 600 student volunteers.

• The Farmlink Project's forward plan to instigate systemic change through a nationwide, collaborative hunger-fighting network.

"In this enlightening episode, Dr. Janet Rumfelt, Board Chair of the African Network for Animal Welfare USA (ANAW USA) and professor of Environmental Studies at Regis University, shares her profound insights into the symbiotic relationship between humans, animals, and our shared environment. Dr. Rumfelt discusses ANAW’S mission in Kenya and other African nations, emphasizing the role of education and sustainable livelihood initiatives in protecting endangered species and combating illegal poaching. She shares her journey in animal welfare and environmental conservation, highlighting the value of curiosity and a beginner's mind.

The episode delves into how ethics, religion, and philosophy can enhance activism, drawing on teachings from figures like Pope Francis, Buddhist leader Thich Nhat Hanh, and indigenous leaders. It explores environmental ethics through various lenses, including biocentrism, eco-centrism, and anthropocentrism, and underscores the importance of interconnection and interdependence.

Author Steve Babson, with a lifetime career in labor education coupled with his PhD in history, Steve holds an expert understanding of the intricate dynamics of social and political movements. In his latest book, "Forgotten Populists: When America's Farmers Turned Left to Save Democracy," Babson delves into the late 1800s, a crucial period in American history that first saw the emergence of the populist movement.

In this episode, Babson discusses the historical context of populism, its transformation over time, and its current interpretations. As he puts it:"Populism is a term applied to a whole range of politicians who, in my estimate, have very little in common." Our conversation touches upon a range of issues including climate change and political discourse, especially relevant topics to explore as the 2024 election approaches.

Babson's insights offer a deeper understanding of how historical populist movements, particularly those led by America's farmers in the 1890’s, shaped our modern political and social climate. His discussion is timely and pertinent, underscoring the importance of historical context in understanding contemporary political and environmental challenges. In this episode:• The factors that gave birth to America’s populism in the 1890’s.• How the emergence of The People's Party helped women win the right to vote.• The changing meaning of populism throughout history.• Babson’s views on public resources such as railroads, and why he thinks they should be run for public benefit as opposed private wealth increases.• How ruthless industrialists of America's gilded age known as Robber Barons are alive and well in today’s world.• America's gaping wealth divide and the dangers it carries for democracy.• The critical importance of public investment in transportation and climate change.• The disconnect between profit and concern for the earth and humankind.• The ongoing lure of a third political party in the United States.✨LEARN MORE "Forgotten Populists: When America's Farmers Turned Left to Save Democracy"

Author of the new book, What We Sow: On the Personal, Ecological, and Cultural Significance of Seeds, Jennifer Jewell reveals the power of seeds in our world "for food, for medicine, for utility, for the vast interconnected web we include in the concept of biodiversity and planetary health, for beauty, and for culture.”

In her role as host of the award-winning NPR radio show and podcast, Cultivating Place, Jennifer strives to help listeners not only learn how to garden better, but to help them know the bigger truth of its impact on a quantum level. Though often considered a consumer-oriented hobby, Jennifer believes gardening goes far beyond this meager expectation: it connects us spiritually, gives us agency over our lives, and serves as a vote for our planet.

In this episode, we discuss:

• How our “impulse to garden” reclaims our relationship with the ancient activity of growing plants.

• Why gardening is a spiritual endeavor, an activist undertaking, and a method of gaining agency over our lives.

• How reducing gardening to a hobby status diminishes the actual truth and respect for the life-sustaining value it holds.

• Correlations between global crises and the human instinct to garden.

• Why we must care about the health, protection and availability of seeds.

• The high value of native plants in providing habitats, improving water quality and air quality, supporting bird migration, pollinators and more.

• Why the health of our planet is reliant on our preserving the remaining wild spaces.

Lisa Fingleton is an artist, filmmaker, writer and grower of organic fruits and vegetables. From her home on a nineteen-acre organic farm and native woodland on the west coast of Ireland, Lisa is a prime example of one who thinks globally and acts locally.

Through her art projects, films and books, Lisa cultivates seamless connections between art, food and farming in a project called The Barna Way. The Barna Way is a mindset, an approach to life that involves “listening to the land and creating an inclusive and welcoming space for all.”

Recognizing the urgency around food insecurity, the climate crisis, biodiversity loss and forced migration, Lisa uses art to help people engage on a creative basis rather than on a fearful footing. She encourages all of us to use artful expression as way of imagining environmental solutions, as well as to express our ecological grief known as solastalgia.

In this episode, we discuss:

• Lisa’s unique ways of combining art, film, food and writing to bring community together to deal with a changing world.

• How Ireland’s government and the Irish Museum of Modern Art support combining art and science to grapple with climate change.

• Lisa’s film “Voice from the Fields” helps the non-farming world understand challenges local food growers face.

• Why shopping at a farmer’s market is a radical act of supporting the planet and protecting food sovereignty.

• How Ireland’s indigenous farmers are deeply knowledgeable about the land, and passionate about protecting the future.

How Lisa’s hyper-local work in Western Ireland sends a message international in scope.

While practitioners of the field are still few, demand is growing rapidly as more and more women understand the benefits that span a lifetime.

"It's a very intimate subject, and most people don't talk about it at all. And if they do, they might be saying to someone else: “I've had that for years, that's just, you know, part of being a woman. And it's really not.”

You can find Dr. Campbell at Select Physical Therapy in Golden Colorado .

In this episode, we discuss:

• The benefits of pelvic floor physical therapy for young athletes, pregnant and post-partum women, mid-life and elderly women.

When a church mission led Mercy Tucker and her husband to take their four year-old and 18 month-old children to live in a barrio in the Dominican Republic, some very real truths emerged. The greatest of these was observing the utter lack of resources available to young, single, poor mothers who lacked even the most basic housing. Yet somehow these young women used any scraps or resources to construct the most basic shelters to put a roof over their children’s heads. When a severe tropical storm pounded the island for twelve straight days, those shelters collapsed and washed away, leaving the mothers and children homeless and suffering. Mercy Tucker and a fellow mission volunteer couldn’t bear to witness the tragedy that no one else seemed to recognize or be concerned about. It seemed to Mercy that the women were invisible––no one cared because no one even noticed them. So Mercy and her mission buddy joined forces and formed the non-profit Proyecto Te Veo to provide the struggling young women with vocational training. Through skill building, the women learn to create and build incomes that allow them to raise their children with dignity.

As a novice therapist in who had yet to earn his doctorate, Ed Tick was at a loss of how to treat the wounded Viet Nam vets coming to get help with their war trauma. The year was 1976. PTSD—Post Traumatic Stress Disorder—would not be identified as a behavioral disorder for another four years. But Ed already knew from hearing their stories that no matter how the presenting issue would be diagnosed, the men were suffering from soul wounds. “Stress disorder indicates what now psychology and psychiatry call the broken brain and that the PTSD is all in our brain functioning and our damaged central nervous system. That's part of it, but that's not the whole thing. It really is everything, the body, the mind, the heart.”—Ed Tick.Since that shaky beginning, Ed Tick has become a world-wide expert on holistically, and successfully, treating warriors for moral injury. Today he works with Ukrainian and Russian soldiers to try to prevent PTSD from taking root. He's trained thousands of US military chaplains on how to counsel their troops. Medicine can help symptoms, but true healing takes much more—and Ed Tick has spent a lifetime uncovering and discovering solutions. His latest book, “Soul Medicine: Healing through Dream Incubation, Visions, Oracles, and Pilgrimage,” gives clues to his robust offering of healing modalities that includes traditional talk therapy, medication, and psychoanalysis.

In this episode, we discuss:• Ed's protest of the Viet Nam war at age fifteen and his work treating Viet Nam vets.• How Viet Nam veterans, sexual & assault victims and Holocaust survivors led to recognition of PTSD syndrome.• Greek wisdom: How 2400 years ago, Hippocrates said, “All illnesses begin in the soul and end in the body.”• Ed's belife that instead of a unified effort where science and spirit guide us together, we've lost spirituality.• How 25,000 years ago shamanism was available for everybody: women as well as men; slaves as well as nobles.• Ed’s 23 healing pilgrimages to Greece and 19 to Viet Nam.• The notable lack of PTSD among the Vietnamese.• The critical role of society and community in the healing of veterans and warriors. • How soul healing enlargers souls to be bigger than the wound.• How to use one’s own spiritual tradition to begin healing.Learn More and Follow Ed Tick:

In this episode, we explore the current, ongoing struggle to preserve democracy in Israel. SEE FULL SHOW NOTES & PHOTOS ON OUR WEBSITE

Dr. Raed Mualem and Dr. Shaul Gabbay, both citizens of Israel, are my guests today. They discuss the very real danger of a precipitous fall into authoritarianism in their country. Along with millions of other Israelis, they are strongly rejecting this shocking development. Both professors are highly educated and well-informed of the situation, and offer their explanations of how Israel found itself in this precarious situation where democracy is hanging by a thread.

“It's only really two entities: the government controlling the Knesset (the Parliament), and on the other hand, the Supreme Court. So if in any way the government also controls and limits the court, then you really don't have any separation at all. And then it becomes a situation where the government, particularly the Prime Minister, controls the country.” —Shaul Gabbay

Since January of 2023, Dr. Mualem, who is a Palestinian citizen of Israel, and Dr. Gabbay, who is a Jewish citizen of Israel and the US, have joined hundreds of thousands of Israelis taking to the streets to protest the change every single Saturday in an effort to stave off the government far-right coalition’s shocking move to solidify power by stripping the Supreme Court — Israel’s only check on power—of its ability to restrain government actions. Reservists are refusing to defend the country, and hundreds of billions of dollars in investments have already left the country as the outside world holds its breath waiting for the outcome—an outcome that could shift the geo-political balance in the Middle East and the world.

“Now this unique constitutional structure exposed Israel to a danger of democratic erosion, much more than any [other] democratic state. This is the weakness. This is our weakness.” —Raed Mualem

In this episode, we discuss:

• How the lack of a constitution in Israel contributes to a weak democratic structure.

• The reasons why Israel has rejected creating a constitution

• How a lack of checks and balances threatens Israel’s democracy

• How Israelis are showing their opposition to the power grab in powerful and influential ways

• The reason military reservists including top pilots gave for refusing to serve when called up if democracy fails

• High-tech companies, medical professionals, intellectuals and every day people plan to emigrate

• The untapped power of the Palestinian Arab populations in Israel to change election outcomes.

• The disparity in equality across various demographics.

• United States influence on the outcome of the crisis.

In this episode, I had the privilege of engaging in an enlightening conversation with the award-winning environmental reporter and author, Kristina Marusic. Our discussion delved deep into the heart of her groundbreaking book, "A New War on Cancer: Unlikely Heroes Revolutionizing Prevention".

See Full Show Notes at How We Change the World Website

In this episode we discuss:

• The critical role of environmental journalists and writers to translate scientific findings into jargon lay people can use.

• The reason why it’s easier to raise funds for cancer treatment as opposed to prevention.

• How her sister’s thyroid cancer diagnosis spurred her curiosity to investigate environmental causes of cancer.

• Kristina's discovery that cancer-causing chemicals are so ubiquitous that we can't shop our way out of this problem by choosing organic or avoiding certain ingredients.

• How everyday items from non-stick pans to scotch-guard to pizza pie paper liners contain “forever chemical” that can harm our health.

• Powerful steps each of us can take to advocate for safer products, food, air, and water.

• How and why the United States is behind many countries when it comes to regulating these chemicals.

“Though the course of my reporting, I learned that while it’s not yet possible to determine the exact causes of one person’s cancer, scientists have identified eight “cancer hallmarks”—or specific changes to cells—that need to happened for cancer to develop. Each of these hallmarks happens through complex interactions between genetic and external factors, including exposure to carcinogenic chemicals." - Kristina Marusic

Mike and Robin Gordon founded Shining Light International to empower women, educate children, and bring hope to the destitute, isolated populations of Northern Pakistan. SEE FULL SHOW NOTES AND PHOTOS ON OUR WEBSITE

Twenty-two years since its inception, Shining Light's influence is gauged not solely by the thousands of lives it has elevated through tangible enhancements such as heightened literacy rates and household incomes. It is also evaluated by the intangible advantages of elevated dignity, self-esteem, communal bonds, and joy that these opportunities have predominantly bestowed upon women and children.

Fifteen years ago Thomas Keown was working as a journalist in NYC when, on vacation, he stumbled upon children suffering from injustice, poverty and indignity in the slums of Kenya. Appalled by the magnitude of suffering, he founded Many Hopesto create systemic change, and fifteen years later he is expanding his efforts globally.

Believing that children who have survived abusive lives of slavery, trafficking, or destitution can become powerful agents of change, Thomas and his team designed Many Hopes to create lasting change and solve deeply entrenched problems around the world.

“Many Hopes exists in the world for one reason and one reason only: “To rescue children from situations of injustice and equip them to become the adults who can do that for other people if they choose to.”Thomas Keown

In this episode, Thomas explains how Many Hopes works with carefully chosen local individuals in six countries (so far) who have experienced hardship themselves and are passionate about creating a better world for children. Using a 6-stage child development framework that rescues, nurtures, educates, inspires, empowers, and supports children in crisis, they have already seen many successes that prove their plan is working.

Many Hopes Website: https://manyhopes.org

Fully aware that charity hasn’t solved the problems of child suffering worldwide, Thomas and team set out to change the paradigm. After all, if more than a trillion dollars in charity hasn’t produced a significant impact, and 258 million children worldwide still can’t access a decent education, continuing to throw more money to corrupt officials or poorly run programs is not the answer.

This is a story of facing reality, acknowledging that lasting change will take forty to fifty years, and having the courage and boldness to commit to the process. And the heart to make it so.

Meet ethical entrepreneur Leanne Mai-ly Hilgart, founder of Humans We Love, a company specializing in high-couture, ethically created wedding gowns, dresses, jewelry and more.

Drawing on her own artistic talent, her career as a high-fashion model in Hong Kong, her MBA and her lifelong activism protecting animals, Leanne first took the plunge in 2011 to fill a need she saw no one else filling––ethically made high-fashion outerwear warm enough for Chicago winters, using zero animal products, and “no-waste” material sourcing.

“I knew I could combine my love for creating, animal rights, my training in business, and in fashion marketing from modeling - into a way to speak up for animals and create a better option than wearing them” — Leanne Mai-ly Hilgart

In this episode, we discuss:

• Leanne’s wake-up call that inspired her to fill an ethical gap in the fashion industry.

• The value of not knowing the rules of how to start a fashion business.

• The importance of seeing the world as holistic and interconnected, whereas when you help one area of the world you help everything else.

• Leanne’s early activism and her lifelong efforts to protect animals.

• How Leanne wove the threads of her life experiences as an artist, model, and animal rights activist to create businesses designed to help make the world better.

• How to deal with imposter syndrome when starting a new business.

• Challenges to running an ethical business that honors the environment, people, animals, and all life.

In today's episode, we present a real-life adaptation of the proverb, "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade." Amid the 2020 pandemic lockdown, an isolated college student stumbled upon a shocking paradox while watching the news - farmers wasting surplus food, leading to an environmental crisis, while food banks struggled to meet demand. This disturbing dichotomy struck a chord with Aidan Reily, a Brown University junior, and his best friend, James Kanoff, a Stanford junior. Driven to bridge this gap, they rallied their friends, Ben and Will Collier from Connecticut, and successfully marshalled an army of 500 student volunteers. Together, they launched The Farmlink Project.

By June 2023, this student-run non-profit has remarkably shifted 118 million pounds of excess farm produce to needy food banks, simultaneously sparing the environment from over 173,000 tons of carbon emissions.

Today's episode is all about how to save the bees! Did you know bees are responsible for pollinating 80 percent of all flowering plants including most fruits, nuts, and vegetables grown in the United States? The founder of Finding Nectar Nursery, Brad is bringing a comprehensive plan to life by providing a pure source of pollinator-friendly flowering plants to the Rocky Mountain Front Range. Beyond that, his main goal is educating the world about the urgency of sustaining bees and other pollinators around the world, and teaching us beautiful, fun ways to do it!

RIM stands for Regenerating Images in Memory, a technique that Dr. Deb developed to help people access and release emotional pain that's stored in their bodies. In Episode #12 of How We Change the World podcast, I talk with Zainab Salbi, the celebrated humanitarian, author, and journalist Oprah Winfrey identified as one of 25 women changing the world and Foreign Policy Magazine called one of “100 Top Global Thinkers.”

Zainab is an Iraqi American woman who grew up in Baghdad in an atmosphere of peace and prosperity until the age of eleven, when two simultaneous events changed her life forever. First, the Iraq-Iran war exploded around her family, and Saddam Hussein directed Zainab’s father to oversee Iraqi civil aviation and serve as Saddam’s personal pilot, thrusting her unwilling family into the dictator’s inner circle. She writes about these harrowing eight years in her riveting memoir, "Between Two Worlds: Escape from Tyranny:Growing up in the Shadow of Saddam Hussein."

The trauma inflicted by these conditions inspired Zainab to spend her life helping women survivors of conflict through Women for Women International, a non-profit organization she founded at the age of twenty-three. Women for Women has reached nearly half a million women and raised 146 million dollars in aid and micro-loans to help families rebuild their lives.

In early 2022, alongside Jody Allen, Zainab co-founded Daughters for Earth, a new fund and campaign that aims to inspire all women to engage in climate change action by mobilizing $100 million for on the ground, women-led efforts to protect and restore the Earth. (See more below)

Teresa and her volunteers have visited five continents and over thirty countries since starting Mobile Medics International in 2017. When catastrophe strikes, they pack their gear and fly to search for "the need" not being met by other aid groups, wherever they are.

Human suffering has no borders. People are people, mothers are mothers, fathers are fathers, and love is love.” -- Teresa Gray

MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST, TERESA GRAY: After thirty years working as a paramedic in a variety of settings including on SWAT teams, in medical helicopters, and in fixed-wing emergency aircraft that land in remote villages across Alaska, Teresa finally decided to semi-retire to spend more time at home with her two youngest children. That plan changed in 2015 when Teresa saws news coverage of Syrian refugees suffering and dying as they tried to cross a narrow part of the Mediterranean to reach Greece. She knew she could help.

She quickly volunteered her medical expertise to an Irish NGO providing aid to refugees in Greece. After later helping in Haiti and the Philippines, Teresa formed Mobile Medics International to better reach hard-to-reach spots where larger NGOs didn’t venture. Now, Teresa and a handful of volunteers arrive with a mobile ambulance in their backpacks, dropping into far flung parts of the world where no expects help to show up.

In this episode of How We Change the World, pioneering environmentalist Eric Lombardi discusses the importance of using Social Enterprise to usher in a Zero Waste world. As the Executive Director of Eco-Cycle (www.EcoCycle.org) from 1989 to 2014, Eric transformed the fledgling, Boulder, Colorado non-profit into the world’s largest Zero Waste Social Enterprise. Along the way, he discovered that while recycling is an absolute necessity to protect the planet, it was only the first step in our long journey to reuse, recycle, remake, and compost literally everything we use on the planet, or “darn near.”

In his 24 years directing an organization focused on creating a social good, Eric discovered that pure capitalism has become a hindrance to achieving our goals of reversing global warming and regenerating the planet. After leaving Ecocycle, he chose to focus his energy on growing the global Social Enterprise Movement. Social enterprises are public or private businesses that address social and environmental issues, yet still have access to investor capital. While still finding lukewarm acceptance in the US, the Social Enterprise Movement is growing quickly around the world, helping foster green economies. Now, as President of Buy Social USA (https://www.buysocialusa.org), Eric encourages government to “increase opportunities for US social enterprises, fair trade organizations, impact networks, and other initiatives that prioritize people and planet over profit maximization."

MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST, ERIC LOMBARDI In addition to protecting the environment, Eric also has passion for mentoring youth. He encourages young people to choose public office or business as powerful careers to create positive social and environmental change. Eric quotes environmental leader Paul Hawken, who wrote in his book, The Ecology of Commerce: "It isn't the earth that needs saving, it is business, because business is killing the earth." Eric believes local governments around the world are frozen in place, unable to make the changes necessary to create Zero Waste/Zero Carbon Communities. Thus, he advocates for double bottom-line business hybrids to partner with government and become the implementers of change.

Episode #8 features two guests, both impacted by the same mass shooting.

Colorado State Senator Tom Sullivan began working to end gun violence in 2012 after his son, Alex, was murdered along with eleven others in a mass shooting in a movie theatre in Aurora, Colorado. Tom and his family’s lives were torn apart, forever altered by the loss of such a beloved and vibrant young man. Fraught with grief and consumed by a desire to make change, Tom retired from a nearly 30-year career with the postal service to run for office in the Colorado House of Representatives. His driving mission was to work for tighter gun safety restrictions so others would not have to endure the excruciating loss he and his family live with every day. After serving two terms in the Colorado House of Representatives, Tom was elected to the State Senate in 2022. In this new role, he continues the tradition he began in the House: every Friday—the day of the week Alex was killed—Tom stands on the floor of the Colorado Senate and announces exactly how long it has been since he lost his only son to gun violence:

“Today is the 552nd Friday since my son Alex was murdered in theatre massacre on July 20, 2012… I want to remind you that many in our communities are repeatedly faced with acts of violence…I would ask you to do what you can and be the change.”

Jordan Witt was watching the same midnight movie in the same Aurora movie theater when Tom's son and eleven other victims were murdered. She had graduated from high school just two months earlier, and was eagerly anticipating her freshmen year of college. Jordan describes the incident from which she escaped physically unharmed (her friend beside her was shot in the leg) as one that especially traumatized her family who knew how close they came to losing her.

A month after the shooting Jordan began her freshman year at the University of Denver, where she joined the ROTC. Her journey to healing was uneven. Eager to attend college, she often felt alone with her trauma, not wanting to bring up the event with new friends. She did not seek counseling, gaining solace by relying on her family and friends, including survivors of the 1999 Columbine High School shooting. She says she thinks the time may be coming when she will seek counseling, albeit now eleven years later.

In her sophomore year, Jordan transferred to the University of Colorado in Boulder on an ROTC scholarship, majoring in Asian Studies with a focus on the Middle East. In 2016, she graduated from CU and was commissioned as an officer in the Navy. She moved to Pensacola for flight school and met her now-husband, Arthur, who is also a Naval Officer.

Jordan is now a Navy Lieutenant and serves her country as an instructor pilot flying the P-8A.

MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST, NORA KRAMER __________________________________________________________

A committed activist for over twenty years, Nora has worked on several causes including racism and gender equality, climate change, poverty, animal rights, gun violence and more. In her twenties Nora realized no effective training existed to help young people who wanted to make change. Believing “if someone is old to enough to realize there's a problem, they are also wise enough to be part of the solution,” she also knew it can be difficult to know where to begin or how to deal with the many questions and challenges that come up along the way. Nora devoted the following eight years to gaining the education and experience, then launched YEA summer camp for youth ages 12-17 in 2009. YEA camp has also taught aspiring adult activists and provides on-line training sessions. YEA has now trained close to 2000 individuals how to effectively create powerful change in the world.

In this episode of "How We Change the World", Palestinian leader Zoughbi Zoughbi talks about his decades of work teaching conflict transformation to other Palestinians and practicing what he terms “un-armed resistance” against the Israeli occupation. Zoughbi is the founder the of Wi’am: The Palestinian Conflict Transformation Center, located in the city of Bethlehem, Palestine.

In this conversation, Zoughbi speaks to the difficulty of living under occupation his entire life, and the hardship it creates for his community and his own family. He addresses the impact such a violent and restricted life has on the hearts and minds of Palestinians in the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem. Under these circumstances, he explains, “PTSD does not exist, because there is no post-trauma, only on-going trauma.” His center works to solve internal conflict in the Palestinian community, with a special emphasis on youth and empowering women and ending domestic violence. They also engage in international diplomacy, working to end conflict not only between Israelis and Palestinians, but in areas of conflict around the world.

“We are not only looking for Palestine to be free of the occupation, we want to work for justice everywhere. As Martin Luther King said, ‘Any injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.’"

With a master’s degree in Conflict Resolution from Notre Dame University, and thirty years leading Wi’am, Zoughbi was recently elected President of the highly regarded international IFOR: International Fellowship of Reconciliation, representing forty countries and every continent.

When Curt Bowen moved to Guatemala from his native Idaho after graduating college, he planned to stay a month to build a house for a family in need. Thirteen years later he is still working hard in Guatemala and has no plans to leave. In some ways, he’s just hitting his stride.

Curt Bowen is the founder of Semilla Nueva, or New Seed, located in the Central American country of Guatemala. Their mission is straight forward: to reduce poverty by reducing the malnutrition that impacts half the country’s children. Malnutrition is not only the leading cause of childhood death, but it also stunts growth and brain development, which in turn keeps the entire country stuck in poverty. Malnutrition is the main reason Guatemala is the fourth poorest country in the world.

The past thirteen years have presented one challenge after another for Curt, which only served to strengthen his resolve. In that time his organization has grown to thirty employees, and he’s nurtured and grown valuable local and global partnerships.

Through rigorous monitoring and evaluation, it’s become clear their work with corn farmers has resulted in greater prosperity for farmers, better nutrition for the population, and solid hope for ongoing improvement in Guatemalan’s overall quality of life and hope for a better future.

DO YOU WANT TO HELP SEMILLA NUEVA HELP GUATEMALANS?

  • Volunteers: Currently they need those with knowledge of crop genetics and graphic artists.
  • Contacts who can help? Foundations, podcasters, or journalists?

Animal Rescue Corps protects dogs, cats, and other domesticated animals across North America and beyond through large-scale Emergency Animal Rescue & Disaster Response, Shelter Relief, and Education & Training.

People love their pets. Whether it’s a dog, cat, rabbit, hamster, bird, rat, or any other domesticated companion, our pets become beloved members of our family. Steadfast companions. Protectors. Entertainers. A glance through Instagram or TikTok provides ample evidence of our collective love for our animal friends.

There is another side to this happy picture, though. Sometimes life becomes tragic for domesticated animals. Whether it’s a situation of animal hoarding, puppy mills, dogfighting, natural disasters, cruelty, or basic neglect, the number of companion animals living in deplorable and deadly situations is staggering. Too many communities have few or no resources to help. Suffering can continue for generations.

Enter Animal Rescue Corps, an army of angels who arrive in massive numbers: veterinarians, handler, scribes, photographers, and other helpers who quite literally save the day for these suffering animals. This team of volunteers, sometimes numbering in the hundreds, document conditions, retrieve every single animal, clean them and treat them medically,, rehabilitate them, and find them loving homes. They are unsung heroes.

Through humor, storytelling, and thoughtful reflection, Tim and Michael take listeners through the entire process of rescuing animals, starting with the phone call they receive from law enforcement regarding an appalling animal welfare situation, all the way through appearing in court to present the evidence they meticulously collect

Prior to founding ARC both enjoyed successful careers in technology in the San Francisco Bay area. In this inaugural podcast of How We Change the World, my guest Lynne Twist offers insights and possibility for repairing our world.

“Every breakdown has the seeds of a breakthrough bigger than the breakdown, I believe, and this breakdown is really feedback from the mother. Global warming and the climate crisis are massive, massive feedback to a species that’s lost its way—ours."

A recognized global visionary, Lynne Twist is a force of nature who for over four decades has committed her life to a mission of ending hunger, protecting the rain forest, and empowering female leadership. From working with Mother Teresa in Calcutta to the refugee camps in Ethiopia and the threatened rainforests of the Amazon, Lynne’s on-the-ground work has brought her a deep understanding of the social tapestry of the world and the historical landscape of the times we are living in.

In this podcast Lynne discusses powerful lessons from her new book, "Living a Committed Life: Finding Freedom and Commitment in a Purpose Larger than Yourself." Her lived experience brings a powerful energy to her words. After raising hundreds of millions of dollars for the Hunger Project, she co-founded the Pachamama Alliance — a nonprofit organization whose mission is to empower indigenous people of the Amazon rainforest to preserve their lands and culture. In addition, Lynne serves on several nonprofit boards including the Fetzer Institute, The Institute of Noetic Sciences, Bioneers, Conscious Capitalism and Women’s Earth Alliance.

For anyone seeking inspiration, direction for their own life, or who enjoys listening to a powerful, insightful leader, this podcast is for you.
