From The Pit
FromThePit is an annual curated exhibition of images of New Zealand musicians playing live in New Zealand. More than anything it is a celebration of the craft and art of live music photography.
This podcast will celebrate our talented photographers that have had their images featured in the exhibitions. A deep dive into their lives as a music photographer, the stories gathered over the years and breaking down their processes.
It's 2023 and we're sitting down with the one and only Mark Derricutt, a photography enthusiast and tech connoisseur. He's been on a journey from Film to Digital, Nikon, and Sony and finally landing on Fuji. But Mark's not one to settle, oh no. He's currently eyeing up the next gear to add to his collection.But it's not just about the gear for Mark, He's not afraid to dive deep into the editing process, from custom fusion clips to nailing the perfect lighting and sound for his interviews and reviews.But with great power comes great responsibility, as they say. Legendary music photographer Chris Cuffaro sat down with us at FromThePit this week about his Greatest Hits exhibition which kicks off February 8th in Auckland. Chris Cuffaro is a renowned music photographer who has captured some of the most iconic moments in rock and roll history.
With over five decades of experience, Chris has worked with a who's who of musicians, including Nirvana, Soundgarden, Gwen Steffani, George Michael, and many more. His work has been featured in magazines, albums, and exhibitions all over the world, earning him a reputation as one of the most talented photographers in the industry.
His upcoming exhibition, "Greatest Hits," is a celebration of his career and a chance for fans to see some of his most memorable images.

Five years ago, Chris transitioned out of his Sales career and into full-time photography. Initially working as a school photographer he's currently working as Head of Photography at The Attention Seeker. Chris is also an established and in-demand music photographer, running his own business Morgan Creative.

This week Chontalle and Chris interview co-host Dave Simpson.
Dave is currently a freelance photographer and a contributing photographer with Getty Images. As the founder of FromThePit, he's a seasoned NZ music photography veteran with a lot of perspective and stories about the industry.
Dave tells us about his memories of King's Arms, his journey from street photography to music, the differences in editorial style for Getty and Under The Radar and the importance of preparation when shooting concerts.

All the way back in 2018, Dave Simpson and Reuben Raj found themselves frustrated that all the work done by New Zealand photographers was not being celebrated.
So they put their heads together and in 2019 came together and founded FromThePit, an annual curated exhibition of images of New Zealand music photography.
