A small little podcast where your hosts, Kara and Ed, look at historical and not so historical cases where we don't celebrate humanity's success but its most fantastic failures. There are always lessons to be learned in failure and humanity has run amuck with fool proof plans that immediately go sideways and fall apart shortly after executing those plans. Join us as we scour the "human-verse" in search for the most poignant, and often hilarious, failures and try to pull out what can be learned from these failures.

In this episode, Kara expands on Prohibition and how it started to affect society and all the different ways people tried to skirt around the 18th Amendment. She dives into how the Federal government tried to crack down on the sale and consumption of alcohol to how people would figure out loopholes and straight up brazen methods of procuring, producing, and transferring alcohol into America.
What was supposed to be movement that entailed women's rights and voting to making a society of men who could be trusted and be reliable, instead the whole amendment backfired horrifically and Kara's only two episodes in! She's got two more in the works involving Prohibition.

In this episode, Kara dives into the beginnings of one of the greatest dumpster fires in American history. What started off as a noble movement to make men better men and to eliminate a societal toxin, turned into a decade of insanity, crime, and abject poverty for many.
We all know about Prohibition from the textbooks, but did you know that the movement started since before the Civil War? Did you know that the movement started because women didn't think men were bad, but alcohol turned them into something else in most cases?
Kara takes us down the origins of what would become one of the most famous constitutional amendments in modern history. Alcohol is one of the most influential contributors to the development of this nation, but simultaneously, a major detractor.

After a bit of a break, Kara and Ed are back on the mic with a real "banger" of an episode so to speak. Our hosts are trying something different where they both put in their own contributions to the idea of how things go bad even after death.
Kara's going to start of with King William the Conqueror's rise to fame and subsequent death and the issues that can arise when you don't bury a portly man in a quick enough time. Let's just say it involves a burning village in the middle of a dispute of who owns the land the King is being buried, and how to squeeze a fat dude in a small coffin... it doesn't end the way you think!
Ed's contribution takes us to Florence, Oregon in 1970, where a 40 foot 8,000 dead whale washes ashore for about a week and no one knows how to remove it. So they use 200 lbs of dynamite to blow the thing into the ocean. Once again... it doesn't end the way you would think.
So take a listen and embrace the fact that you're currently doing better than William the Conqueror and a dead whale on a beach (or any of bystanders who watched what happened)
For some other episodes that you might find interesting that kind of tie into this one check these out.

In this episode, Ed is going back to his childhood from the 90's to talk about one of his favorite movies: Kevin Reynolds' and Kevin Costner's epic fill Waterworld.
Waterworld came out in 1995 and was touted as the most expensive movie ever made in human history. With an eye watering price tag of $175 million, the many creators of the movie as well as the executives who fronted the bill tried to make a cookie cutter no-fail format that can only result in huge success. Can you see where this train of thought can lead? Sounds a lot like "there is no way that this plan can fail!"
Well, here we are. A movie written by a Harvard graduate, directed by one of the most popular directors of the day, Kevin Reynolds who directed Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, starred Kevin Costner as the lead and Dennis Hopper as the villain. The movie was filmed in the middle of the ocean with nothing but practical special effects and very little CGI. When it was all said and done the budget and filming times ballooned, but there was no way it could fail right? For the 90s this movie was going to be a huge hit.
And then it released and absolutely BOMBED and it bombed hard!
Take a listen and Ed will go over the cautionary tale yet again, that just because you think you have a fool proof plan, doesn't mean it's going to work out. Just because you follow a "formula of success" doesn't mean you'll have success. Throwing money at something doesn't guarantee that nature will obey your wishes.
For more details and notes about the episode, check out the website. You'll find the back catalog of over 50 episodes.
You might also want to check out Episode 46 - The Byford Dolphin Incident for when you get to the part about one of the stuntmen who nearly died from the bends in one scene. You'll thank Ed later for it.

Ed and Kara are back this week with a beast of an episode for you. It's been a long time coming, but Ed has finally dug into one of the worst air disasters of the 20th century, the Hindenburg fire!
The Hindenburg was the largest dirigible? Blimp? Zeppelin? floaty thingy the world had ever seen. This thing was designed from the ground up to be comfortable, fast, and most importantly SAFE. Even though the thing was filled with highly flammable hydrogen gas, the Germans really did think of everything and we don't mean that in a sarcastic way... they really did think of everything.
So how in the world did the Hindenburg burn to the ground in less than 40 seconds?
The answer is in the episode! So take a listen and discover how one of the greatest technological marvels of the modern era came crashing down in the most dramatic way possible.
This episode has a ton of pictures and diagrams and what not, so be sure to check out The Day's Dumpster Fire website for all the details. You'll also get to see the back catalog of nearly 60 historical dumpster fires as well as a collection of Kara's insanely good artwork.
Be sure to send Kara and Ed an email at thedaysdumpsterfire@gmail.com for show ideas and even corrections. We here at the Day's Dumpster Fire love all feedback as it makes the whole team better so that you can get the best content possible.

In 1904, the city of St. Louis won the bid to house one of the new Olympic games. In this episode, Kara is diving into the wild and whacky events that took place in these games including women racing to win a pound of tea and marathon runners being denied water and only give alcohol and one dude even being poisoned with strychnine.
The 1904 Olympics was one for the history books before you know it, everything will fly off the rails. So sit back and relax with a sports drink of your choice... like brandy and enjoy the chicanery.

Have you ever tried taking a shortcut or was given the directions involving a shortcut, only to find out that it tripled the amount of time it would have taken if you just stuck to the normal path? Human beings LOVE shortcuts, but most of the time a shortcut is a recipe for disaster. However, the worst shortcuts result in humans having to eat other humans to stay alive due to all the delays that "shortcut" provided.
In this episode, Kara introduces the first part of a two part series about the Donner Party incident in the winter months of 1846 and 1847. In this first part, Kara is going to set the stage for who was involved in the Donner Party and why they were traveling to California and just exactly was this sketchy shortcut? We're going to learn about the major players, the decision makers, the shakers and stirrers of the party, and most importantly, learn about a massive double decker ox-pulled wagon and how it would get stuck in a McDonalds drive-thru today.
If you're not familiar with the Donner Party incident and you have a strong stomach towards... errrr... ummmm... uhhhh... exotic foods, check out The Day's Dumpster Fire website. There you'll find more details of what happened in this particular event as well as a back catalog of over 50 episodes of humans doing what they do best: messing stuff up so they can learn so they can mess more stuff up! Furthermore, you can check out Kara's artwork as she typically "draws" her inspiration for images from various episodes.
If you know of dumpster fires in history that you want to learn more about, send us an email at thedaysdumpsterfire@gmail.com. Check us out on Instagram for more little tidbits of dumpster fires.
So sit back, take a listen, and remind yourself to always second guess someone's suggestion of taking a shortcut... unless you're into to potentially needing to eat people... then in that case DON'T DO IT!

Have you ever been lucky enough (or unlucky enough) to take on a project from a coworker or fellow student who single handedly ran the entire thing into the ground? Did this person do such a terrible job that it cost them their job? Moreover, when you started to clean up the project from this person you quickly asked yourself, "what in the actual @#^! happened here?”
If this has ever happened to you, then you would have a pretty good understanding of what the American engineers experienced when they took over the Panama Canal project from France in 1904 after they had run the whole operation asunder.
Admittedly, the French really did give it their best effort, but they were not prepared for the difficult working conditions in Panama in the 1890s and they were lacking much of the technology that America had at its disposal in 15 years.
In this episode of The Day's Dumpster Fire, Ed and Kara take a stab at the Panama Canal and the 400 hundred year relationship Europe had with the region which was rocky to say the least. The concept was simple: the isthmus of Panama is only 50 miles wide. On the east side is the Atlantic Ocean, on the west side is the Pacific Ocean. If we can get goods and eventually ships through this little swath of land, then we can save THOUSANDS of miles and avoid sailing around South America.
However, this little strip of land proved to be vexing and it all came to a head when France vowed to complete the project, especially after completing the Suez Canal just prior, and after 22,000 lives and millions of dollars lost to... well who knows, France eventually had to throw in the towel and let America try and finish it off.
Take a listen and relish the fact that you never had to finish a project of this magnitude from a coworker! More importantly, learn from the mistakes the French made and learn how good old fashioned American ingenuity stepped up and completed one of the greatest engineering feats in human history.
For more details, check out The Day's Dumpster Fire website as well as take a look at Kara's stellar artwork. You'll also get to see the full catalog of over 50 dumpster fires this little podcast has investigated over the years.
If life has you down, or you've just recently really botched up something you planned to be 100% fool proof, then take a listen and relish in the fact that you're the subject matter of one of these episodes. And if you ARE a good candidate to be the subject matter of this podcast then shoot us an email at thedaysdumpsterfire@gmail.com Kara and Ed would love to hear from you.

Today is the day that you get to hear the thrilling end to one of the craziest and depressing moments in American history up to the 1850: The tragedy of the Donner Party. Check out Episode 52 and Episode 54 for the background that feeds into this conclusion. Be sure to give those a listen on thedaysdumpsterfire.com to get caught up.
Where Kara left off, the Donner party had already been trying to survive in the wild during a winter and as food ran out, desperation forced the living to consider the dead a viable source of food. And in this episode we discover that just because they were eventually "rescued" they weren't out of the woods yet... LITERALLY. In what turns into a situation of hope and survival, we get to see that even though everyone was suffering the decent, kind, and crazy strong among our species will rise to the top to help others.
Kara mentions that there is a fair amount of hidden coins and other pieces of jewelry hidden in the Sierras from the Donner Party and if you want to read up on it and perhaps try and find it on your own, you can find some of the details here.
Lastly, be sure to keep checking thedaysdumpsterfire.com for updates and to see the latest of artwork that Kara uploads (rumor has it that the artwork for this episode may or may not include a blinged out double decker Conestoga wagon.
So sit back, relax, and think hard about the next time you want to take a shortcut in life, after all, look what happened to the Donner Party.

Check it out! Kara, Deja, and Ed got the second part of Donner, Party of 90! published for the world to listen to. In this episode, Kara continues the discussion into the famous (and very... taboo) Donner Party where 90 men, women, and children ventured out west in 1846 to make a new life in California. However, after being informed about a supposed "short cut" the party got stuck in winter weather west of what we know to be Reno, Nevada. With no hope of discovery let alone rescue, the Donner party hunkers down to ride out the winter and hopefully there will be enough people alive to actually rescue when the snow melts.
In this episode, Kara tells the story of the Party of Forlorn Hope, which consisted of 15 men, women, and children that attempted to crawl their way out from the Donner party to try and get help. However, this group got stuck in what was suppose to be a two week adventure ballooned into 33 days! Instead of finding someone to help them, it seemed as though they only found death, and he took a huge toll on the party. As a result, the Party of Forlorn Hope had to make impossible decision and commit unfathomable act to survive when people were dying around them!
If you haven't listened to Part 1 yet, check it out here: Donner, Party of 90! Fire -Episode 52.
If you want to see previous episodes that Kara, Deja, and Ed have done over the years, check it out here. You can also see Kara's artwork that is inspired by the podcast topics at www.thedaysdumpsterfire.com

Nobody thought it possible that Ed could edit 50 episode of The Day's Dumpster Fire... especially Ed. But here it is in all it's glory. More importantly Deja is back so Kara needs to mediate and work overtime in keeping them in check because they tend to let things fly off the rails.
In this episode the crew looks back on 50 episodes of a show they had no idea would actually work. Kara, Deja, and Ed reflect on the episodes that had the greatest impact on them as well as those episodes that legitimately changed their lives even in the smallest degree.
The Day's Dumpster Fire isn't your typical show that explores our species' greatest achievements, but more importantly, the special connection that humanity has with failure and what it teaches us.
This episodes marks a hallmark in the world of humanity messing things up beyond all recognition. Where it's intentional like Episode 25 where the composer seemingly tried to create the worst possible music on par with Geneva Convention War Crimes. Or a gigantic flood of molasses that in Episode 14 that somehow killed a lot of people... in the middle of winter! The crew dives into Salman Rushdie's work as a writer and how it cost him an eye in Episodes 28 and 29
Ed had his daughter on to show the toxicity of the perception of "weight gain" and how it is a detriment to young women everywhere in Episode 34. As well a conversation with a survivor of one of the worst atrocities in human history in Episode 49.
In episodes 30, 28, and 29 as well as Episode 27 where the number of face palms exceeds a normal legal limit in the sheer insanity of humans trying to solve a problem by injecting more problems.
In Episode 40 a dude by the name of Marv tried to take out his frustrations on his town with a gigantic bulldozer.
Lastly in Episodes 35 and 36, Kara sheds light on King Louis the 16th and how to lose your head.

Hey there!
We got a very different episode for you. We'd even prefer not to call it an episode, but rather an interview with a remarkable woman: Charlotte Adelman.
In conjunction with the Arizona Jewish Historical Society, link to their website can be found here, Kara and Ed were able to take their students to the society's building which tells the stories of those who experienced the worst human atrocity in human history... and we pray that the world never sees one of these again, the Nazi devised plan to eradicate entire races of human beings.
Kara and Ed were able to schedule an in person interview with Charlotte in front of their class as well as let their students ask Charlotte questions of their own. An opportunity not too many more youth will have a chance to experience.
Charlotte was born into a bless life surrounded by friends and family, and a mother who could lay claim or at least be a runner up for Mother of the Century. However, all of that was taken away when at the young age of 10 she had to go into hiding as her entire social circle was split up and ultimately lost to the hands corrupted by hate and ideology devoid of ethics. To this day Charlotte does not know what happened to her Mother and friends, but she knows where they were headed too.
Through the kind actions as well as a degree of bravery found only in a few, Charlotte was brought into a home where she had to hide for the duration of the war, cared for by a family who was working to keep themselves alive.
This episode is not like the others on this podcast. It is one thing to read an account of what happened all those years ago, but it's another thing entirely to be able to talk to someone brave enough to relive the tragedy day in and day out in hopes something like the holocaust can never, ever, happen again.
For more details as well as pictures from Charlotte's presentation, head over to thedaysdumpsterfire.com
This episode will never be monetized for The Day's Dumpster Fire podcast and if any money is generated it will go the The Arizona Jewish Historical Society. To donate yourself please click here to contribute to the work they do on a daily basis.

Boy oh boy does Kara have an episode for you. In one of the biggest dumpster fires in American history, Kara dives into the first half of the Vietnam War. Yes! technically it's a "police action" but let's face it... it's an actual war when we look at how many people were involved and how many died on both sides.
In this part 1 episode Kara takes some of us down memory lane and the rest of us down a vivid history lesson into the factors that resulted in America sending literal teenagers to the jungles of Vietnam in the mid 1960s. Hopefully by the end of this episode you'll be able to go to your history teacher (assuming they're still alive or not locked up in a retirement community) and tell them how was it that America got involved in Vietnam and probably even be able to teach them a lesson or two in the process.
Be sure to check out our website: thedaysdumpsterfire.com for more details and some background on other episodes that Kara and Ed have produced 40 times over. That's right... Kara has put up enough of Ed to produce 40 episodes!!!

In today's episode, Kara is going to ask you if you have ever had "buyer's remorse" and if you have ever had a business venture fail due to factors outside your control.
Most of us have either experienced one or the other and many of us have experienced both. In the "American Dust Bowl Fire," Kara is taking you back to a time in American history where a handshake was more binding than any contract and many Americans lived in a vastly different country. After the stock market crash of 1929, many Americans had to reinvent themselves in a time that became known as the Great Depression. It could be argued that even though the Great Depression took a toll on millions of American families, this time period shaped a generation that would change the world.
Among those families whose lives were disrupted the most were those living in the mid west and those living in Panhandle took it even harder when one of the worst droughts in American history coincided with the worst economic downturn the nation had ever experienced up to this point.
To add salt to the wound, this drought that ruined thousands of cash crops in what would be known as "no man's land" was for the most part preventable! It is this realization that Kara takes us back to the 1800s where a fledgling ambitious nation offered whatever it could to prospective families to move out west at all costs. In doing so, these families tilled the ground and destroyed the delicate ecosystem that made the ground suitable for all live stock. These actions from the 1800s came to a head in the early 1930s which resulted in a dumpster fire of unequaled scope.

Hey all,
It's a bit late, but Ed and Kara out Episode 47 out on thedaysdumpsterfire.com which involves the crazy stuff that goes on in the waters around the North Pole like lots and lots of tricky to deal with polar bears. In mid to late 1500s Dutch navigator and respected cartographer Willem Barentsz looked at how explorers were trying to get to India by sailing around Africa or sailing west only to hit the Americas, but Barentsz looked to the north of Europe and figured he could close the gap by simply sailing through the North Pole waters.
While on a paper map it looks like a great idea, but in a very real spherical world that doesn't work out so well. Nothing behaves as it should. Ice has a mind of it's own, polar bears are shockingly hard to deal with, the cold makes everything made of metal super weak, and it's not uncommon for your ship to get stuck for months on end.
So come join Ed and Kara as they discuss the early days of human exploration of the oceans where Murphy's Law says, "Hold my beer and watch this..." as Barentsz and crew set out to redefine maritime navigation.

In this episode, Ed takes you into the world of saturation diving where you'll learn how the human body can adapt to absorb extreme conditions only found at the bottom of the ocean.
When we go swimming at the pool, we take it for granted that the depths that some members of society live and breathe in especially when it comes to a lovely concoction called Heliox.
When you spend weeks under water your body absorbs inert gases like nitrogen and even helium, but when you come to the surface, that gas has to go somewhere. In most cases it's out through your lungs but if you come up too fast, those gases escape through any means possible like through boiling blood and even explosion.
This is called explosive decompression.
In this episode, Ed will explore what explosive decompression looks like and what can happen if you're standing too close to the hatch when when you're environment changes from 10 atmospheres of pressure down to one in a fraction of a second.

Welcome back to The Day's Dumpster Fire where we don't celebrate humanity's successes but its most fantastic failures.
On today's episode, Kara explores one of America's earliest mysteries dating back to the olden days when America was nothing more than just a couple of colonies. The British colony of Roanoke was designed to be an initial starting point for what was hoped to be the foundation of Britain's next great business venture.
While most of us know that Roanoke was established in 1587 and somehow disappeared by 1590 with hardly a trace, Kara expands the mystery by looping in the British and European happenings and conflicts which may have contributed to the disappearance. She also looks at the status of the Native Americans who, for the most part, surrounded the colony on all sides.
She finishes with a brief discussion as to some of the theories of how the colony could have disappeared, but ultimately, the mystery of Roanoke reflects more of what was happening on the Atlantic seaboard and England's ever growing involvement in world affairs and perhaps sticking her nose where it doesn't need to be stuck.

Have you or someone you love every had the misfortune of being pregnant and having to deal with morning sickness? Some women are lucky and they never get it. Some women get it mildly in their first trimesters. Other women are unlucky to have a severe case of it in their first trimester. And some women are cursed with morning sickness through their entire pregnancy.
In the 1950s and going into the 1960s, men returning home from the front lines of World War II were "making up for lost time away from the women of their lives and were proceeding to make lots of babies. These babies would later become known as the "Baby Boomers." As a result of this massive generation addition to the world's population, millions of women were getting pregnant and many were suffering from intense debilitating morning sickness.
With so few doctors left in Europe after the war, something had to be done to get these women some sort of relief for their morning sickness. That relief came in the form of a special medication that essentially eliminated morning sickness in all of Europe.
Thalidomide was touted as being so safe that it was sold over the counter and even the workers at the factory that made the stuff were given free bottles to take up.
This went fine until more and more babies were being born with terrible birth defects. It seemed like one after another, baby after baby was born with disfigured arms and legs or born without them in general. Mortality rates skyrocketed throughout Europe and many were left wondering what what causing all these birth defects. When the science community got together, they quickly drew a line to the common factor among all these birth defects... Thalidomide.
However, the manufacturer of this medication chose to hide the evidence and deny the connection. They opted to ignore the problem and even gaslight thousands and thousands of desperate mothers looking for answers to their problems.
It doesn't help that the men who created this drug were former Nazi scientist who were in trouble for crimes against humanity during the height of the holocaust!
Join Ed and Kara as they explore difficult terrain that is the Thalidomide Generation and how a failure to test one thing thoroughly upended the lives of over 100,000.
For more details and images tied to Thalidomide be sure to check out The Day's Dumpster Fire website. Be sure to send Kara and Ed an email at thedaysdumpsterfire@gmail.com and let them know of new ideas you might have or to simply let them know how they're doing.

In this episode, Ed and Kara have a "pallet cleanser." Instead of massive wars with hundreds of thousands of people dying, in this episode no one dies (thankfully) but some buildings, both personal and city owned, don't get off so easily. Marvin Heemeyer was a relatively unassuming middle aged guy in Granby, Colorado who owned a reputable muffler shop. Overall Marvin was well liked and a talented welder who ran a snowmobile club. However, things changed when a dispute broke out about some auctioned property that Marvin won. Some high ranking members of the community may or may not have tried to stonewall Marvin's ambitions. There was also an issue as to where Marvin was going to store his poop...
Ultimately the entire escapade culminated in Marvin spending 18 months applying armor plating on a massive bulldozer bigger than a WWII German Tiger tank and Marvin sealing himself in it and proceeded to plough down as much of Granby, CO as possible! In a wacky 2.5 hour ordeal that involved nearly every member of law enforcement north of Denver, Marvin took his frustrations out on one building after another with his fortified bulldozer.
For more details be sure to check out our website, www.thedaysdumpsterfire.com. There you'll find pictures of that fateful day and the bulldozer itself in what is quite possible one of the biggest and strangest dumpster fires in Colorado history.

In this episode, Kara and Ed did something they normally don't do and that is to record an episode of the show live in their classroom. They also brought on students to talk about one of the largest oceanic disasters of all time, the sinking of the Titanic April 14, 1912.
Perhaps one of the greatest dumpster fires of all time, the White Star Line's latest passenger ship that espoused luxury and lavishness, the Titanic was touted as a ship that was unsinkable. Even the second and third classes would have a better stay on the Titanic than any other ship out there. Until that fateful night a wayward iceberg said, "Hold my beer and watch this!"
Kara and Ed start off with an overview of what the actual Titanic was like complete with the living conditions and engineering specifications that combined to make the Titanic a marvel of human engineering. Afterwards Kara's and Ed's students will present various theories both conspiratorial and somewhat believable. Followed by Kara's analysis of the aftermath of the incident.

In this episode, Kara follows up on her exploration into the dumpster fire that is the Vietnam War. She left off in the Vietnam War Part I right at the height of 1969. So if you haven't checked out that episode, it is strongly recommended that you do so now. However, if you feel confident in your knowledge of Vietnam, then you can proceed.
Kara moves on from what started the Vietnam War in American history to why the issue created so much conflict in an already conflicted America. There are race riots, gay rights activists, anti-space travel issues, along with a multitude of other internal issues in America that when combined made things so much worse for the boys fighting in the war itself. Not to mention, if you ever had aspirations of being the President of the United States, the question must be asked: why in God's green earth would anyone want this job?

In this episode, Ed opens the book on one of history's most iconic military leaders, Napoleon Bonaparte. Napoleon is most famous for his wars that were so uniquely titled that they became known as the "Napoleonic Wars." For most of his reign, it was wondered if Napoleon could ever be defeated!
And was he gloriously defeated!
In part 1 of a 2 part series, Ed looks at the rise of Napoleon from his early years struggling to climb the ranks in French schools as a kid who was Italian to his massive victory against the British at Toulon. We get to see what separated Napoleon from the generations of ineffective leaders who did nothing more than eat fancy foods and sink France into crippling debt. Eventually, Napoleon would crown himself the emperor of France, and quickly took over most of eastern Europe including Austria, Prussia, Italy, and last but not least, Russia
In part 1 Napoleon quickly established himself as a person who can get stuff done, but more effectively as a military visionary who seemed undefeatable in battle. Then in part 2 his beef with Britain involved his beef with Russia and Napoleon raised the largest army in Europe's history and vowed to put Russia in its place once and for all in what would become one of the greatest dumpster fires in history.

Hey everyone!
After a brief pause in the month of July, Ed finally figured out how to use the fancy new mixer. Many episodes were recorded in July, but Ed messed them all up... who would have thought something intended to improve life and make it easier record and edit, is way more difficult than originally thought?
In today's episode, both Kara and Deja have family obligations to attend to, however, that doesn't mean there isn't going to be a good show. Ed has brought in a special guest, his oldest daughter Elara.
At the old age of 15, Elara sheds light on the growing issue of social media and fad diets and how they are affecting teenagers today and especially girls. While social media and fad diets were designed to revolutionize social understanding and overall health, when implemented, they work together to create a world of self-image issues, body dysmorphia, and litany of eating disorders.
Eating disorders is one of the leading cause of deaths among teenagers and it seems that there is no solution in sight as to how the problem can be fixed.
Elara will take you into the mind of a teenager facing these problems and tells her story of recovery, which started when she was in the second grade!!!
More importantly, Elara explains how eating disorders can affect families and friends on top of being detrimental to one's own health.
While the problem of teenage eating disorders continues to grow, Elara explains how to climb out of this mental prison and that everyone can achieve recovery. Lastly, happiness is not what you see in the mirror, but who you surround yourself with and how you can improve yourself by improving others.
This episode is a little emotional, but worth a listen; especially if you're a teenager or the parent of teenager struggling with the difficulties of being a teenager in this day and age.

Finally, the trio are back together again in the bedroom turned into a janky recording studio. With some of the issues of trying to figure out how a mixer works behind Ed, the group can focus on more ambitious projects... like a multipart exploration in one of the wildest dumpster fires in human history, the French Revolution.
In this first part, we're introduced to King Louis XVI who history has not painted the guy in a good light. Not completely ignorant or pompous, Louis was still outside of the world of the peasant and struggled to pull France out of decades of war induced crippling debt. Every time Louis tried to implement something to help his country, it seemed to backfire. In other words, perfect fodder for a podcast about dumpster fires.
One could argue that Louis was ill equipped to take on the tall order of fixing all of France, it is important to note that our boy Louis was in fact a boy. At the age of 15, Louis had the weight of national debt, irate middle class, little support from the upper class, and a 1st estate that didn't take him seriously. All of this would combine to condemn Louis and his wife Marie Antoinette to a visit to the guillotine. Regardless of their fates, they at least looked good in the process!

Hey everyone! The gang is back this week to conclude the story of one of the most useless monarchs in French history, King Louis XVI. Everyone knows that Louis lost his mind in the end (actually he lost his head and by extension his mind went with it), but there were a lot of events that led up to his date with the guillotine.
In this episode, Kara is going to explain the foundations of the French Revolution and how the public ultimately expressed their frustrations via the "Reign of Terror." You're going to learn about a guy is going to get his hand cut off, another beaten and stabbed to death in the streets, and worse yet, King Louis was too worried about waking up his wife in the middle of the night because there was a hoard of angry French peasantry outside his palace with literal pitchforks and torches.
Lastly, a lot of myths are going to be dispelled like how Louis went to his execution with stoicism even though history portrayed him as a screaming cowered, much like Ed would have been if he were in Louis shoes.
So sit back, relax, order some escargot and listen in because if you have a unit exam on how the French Revolution started and the fate of King Louis XVI, then you're in for a great study session!

Hey there! Today's episode is going to check all the boxes that go into classifying something as a legit historical dumpster fire. Is there a huge problem? Check. Is there a plan to solve that problem? Check. Does humanity plan out the solution with great detail and expense? Check and Check. When executing that plan, does everything fall apart shortly after? Check. And for a bonus: does everything fall apart over and over and over? Check and Check and Check!
Today, Ed is diving into the Transatlantic Telegraph Cable this is one of the largest and most ambitious engineering feats of the 1800's. Enamored with the massive success of Samuel Morse's telegraph machine and his subsequent Morse Code, both America and England desperately wanted to have a telegraph line that would span the "pond" and connect the two countries. After all, the world already had over 30,000 miles of telegraph wire spread out over Europe and America. These wires were above the ground, under the ground, and even under the water. So how hard can it be to lay down one measly little wire across the Atlantic Ocean?
Well it turns out it's very hard, and when you combine the elements of nature, with the hubris of humanity, you're asking for things to go wrong over and over again!
So sit back and take a listen, because today's episode will make you appreciate your cellphone all that much more. For more details on this topic and the entire library, check out the website: www.thedaysdumpsterfire.com

If you're seeing this episode in your pod catcher and you haven't listened to Episode 38. Napoleon Bonaparte's Greatest Blunder Fire Part 1, be sure to do that before listening to this. While this episode is where we get to fully embrace the legendary poo show that was Napoleon's invasion of Russia in 1812, part 1 looked at his meteoric rise from a minor officer in the French Revolution, to becoming the Emperor of France and many other lands including Austria, Prussia, Warsaw, Russia, and Italy. Listening to that episode will make you appreciate this episode that much more.
In this episode we dive into the surprisingly well thought out invasion of Russia. Many falsely assume that Napoleon threw a temper tantrum at finding out that Russia was secretly trading with Britain (Napoleon wanted all of Europe to really stick it to Britain and not trade with them with his "Continental System," but Russia was in dire straights and they figured... who cares). Many think Napoleon was petulant and tyrannical, but in reality he was fairly methodical and calculated. However, it will be tough to maintain those opinions after listening to this episode.
After spending two years planning, recruiting, organizing, and negotiating, Napoleon set out with on of the largest armies in all of human history called the Grande Armee, with a staggering 650,000 men involving France, Austria, Prussia and a few other small countries. However, after six months, only about 100,000 made it back with only 20,000 of that were able to fight. This is considered one of the worst military campaigns in history, the likes of which would not be seen until World War I and World War II. Take a listen and see just what in the world caused such a brilliant military mind of the 19th century look like a military academy drop out in what would become Napoleon's Greatest Blunder.

The time has come to share the rest of the events that befell Robert Falcon Scott and his crew between January and March of 1912. If you have not listened to Episode 31. Terra Nova Fire, you might want to go back and take a listen to that episode before listening to this one.
In the first part, Ed sets the stage for the worldwide craze of being the first one to set foot on the southern geographic south pole. The men who explored Antarctica were next level, and humanity hasn't quite seen this type of breed of man in quite some time. Yes these explorers all knew each other, and they were all competing against each other, but they carried a ton of respect for each other.
In this second part, Ed breaks down the details surrounding the fateful day (s) where not only did Scott lose all his remaining men on his team to the elements, Scott himself succumbed to Antarctica's other worldly temperatures.
But Scott's expedition wasn't a failure even though he died, the fact his crew of scientists were able to extract so much information that the results would change the world, is a feat like none other.
Go ahead and wrap up in 5 different blankets, make a cup of noodles, turn on the heat in your house, and sit back and listen to a story that will make you glad you never became an explorer.

Somehow Ed and Deja were able to meet in person and record together in the same room while Kara lives on the opposite end of the Phoenix metropolitan area. However, it took them over an hour and half to figure out how to set up a microphone.
Thankfully Kara came prepared with an actual episode while Ed's computer kept resetting and glitching out.
In today's episode, Kara looks into one of the most critical assassinations in the 20th century: Archduke of Austria, Franz Ferdinand. We typically agree that the Great War that followed the assassination was a dumpster fire, the events leading up to the even is it's own special of crazy including the actual attempt itself, which barely succeeded!

After a brief hiatus due to Ed always struggling with editing software and a few temper tantrums, the gang is back with an episode like no other.
In this episode, Ed dives into the Terra Nova ship / expedition in the 1910s, where three men simultaneously work together and as well as compete to be the first to get the south pole. Part 1 is going to set the stage for what will result in 4 men dying in what is perhaps one of the most complicated and ambitious expeditions up to this time in human history. This is all because Antarctica is the most inhospitable places on Earth with temps dipping to -100 to -150 Fahrenheit and winds ranging up to hurricane class speeds.
So if you want to get to the south pole, grab a warm blanket and take a listen!

In this episode, Kara comes out swinging with one of the strangest dudes in all of human history... Roman Emperor Caligula.
In four short years, Caligula reshaped the glam life of the ultra-wealthy and put together a rather strange "court" if that is even a thing today or back then.
Caligula started off with all the potential one could ask of an emperor but quickly went tits up. While the jury is still out on this guy's rationalism for his actions; he undoubtedly accomplished great things, while also destroying himself.
Kara does a great job in this episode proving the point that the number one cause of death of being a Roman emperor... is BEING A ROMAN EMPEROR!!!

Hey Everyone!
Kara and Ed decided that they need to spice things up a bit and bring on a guest. So they found a lady by the name of Deja to liven things up. As it turns out, Deja has a bit of a pop culture / music background (as well as a really nice microphone to talk into) and she knows a thing or two about how NOT to make music.
In this episode, you'll be introduced to a song that literally NOBODY wants to listen to that is now a cult classic as well as a performer who not only soils herself on stage but can carry a single tune through the entire national anthem, and lastly a 1980s ultra hair rocker who destroys a congressional hearing with minimal blush and eyeshadow along with epic hair and a crap ton of eloquence. [Yes we know this is a run-on sentence / paragraph but who can afford a punctuation subscription these days]
If you've ever doubted yourself in terms of musical probity, then take a listen. You'll quickly discover that you're not as bad as you previously thought.

It turns out that Ed doesn't know how to hit the "upload" button on Sunday when everything is supposed to be published. So it's a day late but not a dollar short.
Deja is back and she's got a banger episode that will be a two parter! In this episode, Deja is going to dive into the writings of Salmon Rushdie who is one of the most controversial writers of the post modern age.
Rushdie is an Indian born / British educated writer who is most known for his book, The Satanic Verses. In this book, Rushdie approached reality with magical realism and quickly lit a fire in a contentious period of world history known as the late 1980's / 1990's where lots of people of all religious, ethnic, and economic backgrounds got super upset over a single book.
Ultimately, Rushdie was stabbed in the back and lost an eye over this book!!!
So join in on what could be the most divisive episode of The Day's Dumpster Fire could ever hope to produce. This episode will try and shed light on both sides of Rushdie's work in terms of his writing style and subject matter.

Hey there!
Guess whose back? Deja's back, Deja's back, Deja's back.... But in this episode no one is talking about a monster... but maybe Salman Rushdie...
Salmon Rushdie wrote a book that landed himself on the wrong side of a huge sect of Islam... and it was exclusively accidental. Rushdie wanted to write a book that took a rather fevered dream / humorous approach to the Old Testament figures that may or may not have been influenced by intervening forces beyond our control.
Long story short, Rushdie decided to write a book, in the middle of a certain time, surrounded by a group of followers, that ultimately attacked someone who went too far in their world.
Join the intrepid trio of nerdiness as they explore the world of intense religious beliefs and a book intended to be a humorous satire.

Hey everyone!
In this episode, Ed makes everyone feel better about themselves by talking about the first ever massive oil tanker crash / spill in history. Yes that is correct in that we're talking about the Torrey Canyon oil tanker tanker that was supposed to be the pinnacle of technology for the day. This ship was also expanded to twice its size only to run aground off the Southwest coast of Great Britain in the early 1960's.
So join us in this epic retelling of one of the most awkward moments in human history where one nation had to call another nation and say, "Hey, um, we got a slight issue that might, if not most likely will affect your coastlines..."

Hey everyone!
Due to Ed's inability to actually figure anything out. This episode is coming to you a bit later than normal.
In this episode, Kara is regaling everyone with stories revolving around people in history who ever tried to "elevate" their lives with gun powder that China invention in year... ... ... something or something.
Anyways, humanity (at least the bros out there) have tried to utilize explosives to achieve new heights and other interesting things at the expense of blowing themselves up in the process.
So listen in because we also Deja back and we don't think she's going away anytime soon. Deja has a knack of dissolving Kara and Ed's nerdiness to make it palatable to 99% of the world's audience. This really applies to Ed's droning on and on and on about "sciencey" things.
Deja is also working on an epic episode involving Salmon Rushdie, so stay tuned to that masterpiece.
Lastly, make sure you tell your friends about this little show and if necessary, physically take their phones and find the episode for them. Trust us, you'll be doing them a favor and you'll be introducing your friend to the wide world of podcasting!

In this episode, Ed addresses that question you might have about why gas pumps say "unleaded gasoline only." Well, it turns out some people in the 1920s thought that adding lead to gasoline helps your car run smoother and overall better. Even though most people since ancient Romans understood that lead isn't good for the body. In the 1920's all that valid concern went right out the window and accumulated all that lead in the brains of millions (if not BILLIONS) of people.
Follow along where Ed and Kara address a dumpster fire so blatantly obvious both on paper and in execution, that we have to wonder why putting lead in gasoline was even considered a good idea.
Lastly! Don't forget to hound your friends and family about The Day's Dumpster Fire. We all have that acquaintance who loves audiobooks, but lacks the technological skills to find The Day's Dumpster Fire, then physically walk them through how to find it on any pod catcher app you use.

Hey everyone!
It took a hot minute and a ton of feedback, but Kara and Ed got the long anticipated second part of, "Leaded Gasoline" episode.
In this episode, Ed dives into the absolutely insane story of how one man named, Claire, was able to bring down the crazy stupid leaded gasoline empire.
Be sure to absolutely alienate everyone you know and get them to subscribe to the this podcast. Kara and Ed are working on a donation plate to pass around where they can make about 1 to 1.5 dozens of dollars per episode LOL.

Hey Everyone!
Kara and Ed are back behind the microphones (albeit Ed's pop filter technique still isn't working... you'll hear it when you hear it; meanwhile Kara's $30 budget special is going strong... ) with a new episode revolving around Henry VIII and his puss filled leaky thigh. Kara dives into why being married to Henry VIII is a really bad idea. In fact, Kara brings up just how dangerous it can be to know the wives of Henry VIII.
To be in Henry's circle, you have to to sign a waiver that states that you're quite content with the notion that your head and your body are ok being in two different locations in London at the same time. And this is all due to the King's whim.
What could possibly go wrong?
Furthermore, what happens when you fixate on controlling biology to the point where if you have a daughter, then heads must roll. And yet if you have a boy, he's too sickly to rule...
It seems like to be the kind of king Henry VIII was, you need to live forever and be in control of thousands of cloning vats. May god have mercy on your soul if you defy the necessity of chromosomal destiny and you wind up with any gender!

They finally made it! The original episode 20 was a recording nightmare and instead of Ed throwing his laptop out the window, our resident nerds re-recorded a new one. This time the right boxes were checked so it actually recorded.
But yes! Episode 20 in all its glory is out in the wild. In this episode, Kara and Ed break down the famous Salem Witch Trials of 1692. While the rest of the world was winding down from all their witch hunt chicanery, the American colonies were just getting warmed up. However, America being America took their own spin on things and our hosts look at everything from the belief structures of the Puritans, how women and children were valued in Puritanical society as well as politics, and land grabbing and legalized incestuous robbery. There is a lot of stuff that went on behind the scenes beyond a handful of girls claimed they saw and experienced.
After 19 women and men were innocently executed for bogus reasons, it's safe to say that NOTHING like this witch hunt could ever happen again. America always learns its lessons and thankfully crazy witch hunts have never happened again... [insert eye roll emoji here]

Happy New Years Eve from everyone at The Day's Dumpster Fire!
In this episode, that has absolutely nothing to do with New Years Eve, Ed finally remembers that he needed to finish off his part 2 of his Hubble Needs Glasses episode from weeks ago. That is exactly what this episode is about. He explores how a tiny defect barely visible to the human eye can cause a 2.4 meter to be perfectly ground imperfectly... whatever that means.
Furthermore, he sheds some light on what the seven astronauts who went up in Hubble's Service Mission-1 had to go through to fit a very customer pair of glasses into it's eye-hole so that people on Earth can once and for all see just how magnificent this telescope is.
So this episode isn't so much a dumpster fire in the traditional sense, but what Kara and Ed have deemed a "dumpster garden" where out of a complete mess of a situation, a win can come about.

We've all seen the movie 300 which means we're all experts on the battle of Thermopylae... Thermopolis... Thermopylae... or however it's spelled. We all know how 300 Spartans, with amazing muscles and abs, were able to fend off the thousands of men at the hands of the evil God-King Xerxes... Xerxes... Zercksies... or however it's spelled. It is a story that has resonated through history as the epitome of the "underdog" theme.
In this episode, Kara takes a different perspective of the Battle of Thermopylae. Instead of focusing on the Spartans, she looks at the battle from the Persian perspective, which if you know the show, is a perfect Dumpster Fire. What was suppose to be a quick battle to knock out Greek support for unifying Greece against the Persians, quickly ballooned into a fiasco where it seems as though nothing could break the Spartan line. Kara also sheds a bit of light on the history of Persia and for the most part debunks, disproves, and even calls out blatant inaccuracies all at the expense of Hollywood story telling.
If you want a good map that kind of sheds some light on how the Greco-Persian War take place, check it out here.

Heyo!
Kara and Ed are back and they are trying a slightly different format... they both will have a segment instead of one person hogging the entire episode. In this episode Kara dives into the craziness of the expedition to find King Tutt's tomb in the 1920s and 1930. The moral of the story: DON'T SHAVE YOUR FACE AFTER IT HAS BEEN BITTEN BY A MOSQUITO! Meanwhile Ed will look at a city whose sole purpose was to protect the Valley of the Kings from tomb robbers and house craftsmen to construct tombs for future pharaohs. However, five minutes after the city got to work, the people protecting and and constructing these elaborate tombs started to rob the crap out of them.
Lastly you'll get a glimpse at Kara and Ed's elaborate topic choosing protocols that they use to figure out what episode you're going to hear next.

Fat Batman and Asthmatic Robin are out of a life inducing exile after a long bout of Murphy's Law saying, "Hold my beer, and watch this!" Being an adult is hard and "adulting" takes up a lot of time. Now our intrepid hosts are back and Ed is once again nerding out on sciencey things. All the while Kara sits patiently while Ed tries and fails to bring out his inner Neil deGrasse Tyson.
In this episode, the famous Hubble Space Telescope's origin story is under the magnifying lens so to speak. We all love the pictures this instrument has been pumping out for decades, but few remember or know that the process to get this thing built took decades and was fraught with one trashcan fire after another. Everything from funding issues, to mirror grinding issues, to even exploding space shuttles. The fact that it is doing so well now is a testament to humanity's inability to control Murphy's Law... but it's cute when it does try.

In what was supposed to be a bonus episode for the hit release of Christopher Nolan's movie, Oppenheimer, Ed and Kara took a deep dive into J. Robert Oppenheimer's life and the various events that brought him up to the infamous Manhattan Project. In this episode, everyone gets to look into what made Oppenheimer such a genius as well as a good leader, but more importantly, we get to learn how to make a seemingly innocuous research paper entitled in such a way that it seems absolutely fascinating.
Ultimately, you will get some visibility into how the atomic bomb worked; why there was so much desire to unlock the power of the atom; and why it's a bad idea to have a brother, sister in law, a girlfriend, and a land lady all be card carrying communists at the same time...
Join our intrepid nerds in what they had originally intended to be a bonus episode to be be released on the same day as the movie as they fail to even get that part right. What was intended to be a bonus episode in between normal bi-weekly episodes, has turned out to be just a normal episode.

Hey there!
Have you ever wondered what was the meaning of life? Why ducks float and yet small rocks don't and other mysteries??? Well neither did your hosts. In Part 1 of Custer's Last stand Ed and Kara look at who George Armstrong Custer was and how he rose through the ranks to ultimately get absolutely wrecked in the the plains of Southern Montana. In this episode Ed looks at some of of the complexities of the Native American tribes including one assuming / very "Slow" Lakota man who rose to great heights and ultimately had a vision that would change the history of America's expansion out west shortly after the American Civil War. To understand just how Custer fell so fast, it is necessary to understand the people who brought him down in just a couple of hours in what would be one of the greatest Dumpster Fires of the Federal Army's history.

Hey Everyone!
In today's episode Kara is going to paint a picture of King Tutankhamen. This guy was named Pharaoh when he was only 12 years old and was immediately charged with the responsibility of fixing his entire country's religious SNAFU's left over from his dad. He also had to rebuild economies, temples, boats, and the military... A pretty tall order to ask any pre-teen.
What's worse, he had to do all of that while his inbred genetic make up made him susceptible to every kind of malady, syndrome, and dysfunction known to man. Literally his family tree looked like the Olympic five hoop logo...
So join Kara and Ed as they dive into the kiddy pool sized genetic wreck that was King Tutankhamen and see just why this guy is so famous.

Happy Fathers' Day everyone!
In this special episode of The Day's Dumpster Fire, Ed and Kara don't mention a single thing about Fathers' Day and instead dive right into the absolutely insane incident known at at the 1919 Boston Molasses Flood.
Ever heard of the the phrase, "Slower than molasses on a January morning" or something of the sort? Well.... it just so happened that 21 Bostonians were killed and another 150 people injured as well as a horse got smothered in a 2.3 million gallon sticky tsunami of molasses in just a few seconds.
This topic, just like so many other topics, starts off with an assumption that the events that took place are comical and "sooooo 1919's" but when Ed and Kara dive in to the sweet, sweet, details; things are not as easily understood. This dumpster fire literally embraces the adage that to "assume" makes and "ass out of you and molasses."

Hey everyone!
Have you ever seen that famous black and white film footage of that giant hydrogen-filled blimp on fire with the guy in the back ground screaming, "Oh the humanity!" and thought to yourself, how did this happen to the famous Hindenburg blimp?
Well today's episode won't even come close to answering any of that... That will be another episode so don't worry. In this episode Kara dives into one of the most seminal figures in German history:
Paul Ludwig Hans Anton von Beneckendorff und von Hindenburg (thank you Wikipedia).
If you want the easier way to pronounce his name try this:
paʊl ˈluːtvɪç hans ˈantoːn fɔn ˈbɛnəkn̩dɔʁf ʔʊnt fɔn ˈhɪndn̩bʊʁk (I hate you Wikipedia).
Either way, this guy was a decorated war hero and shared a lot of similarities with George Washington. They both wanted to retire and yet they kept getting called back time and time again to serve their nations. The major difference is that where Washington succeeded, Hindenburg accidentally laid the foundation for Adolf Hitler's psychotic machinations.
So join Kara and Ed in the exploration into the world of German political intrigue and old men with epic mustaches as they butcher their way through one German name after another and construct the dumpster that will eventually be lit known as the Third Reich.

The time has come! Much like the famous sinking of the Titanic, we finally get to find out the fate of Custer's battalion in the grassy fields in Wyoming in 1876. Spoiler alert... like the Titanic, the boat sinks and in the case of Custer's men all die too. Join Ed and Kara as they dive into the nitty gritty details of this epic battle in the Plaines Wars that culminated in what would later be known as Custer's Last Stand.
It is highly recommended that you listen to parts 1 and 2 prior to listening to this final episode. There was so much that happened prior to this conflict in 1876 that it's important to look at the brief biographies of Custer and Sitting Bull and how their life choices brought them to the Greasy Grass.
By the end of this episode, you'll walk away with a sudden contentment about your life and how things might seem pretty dire right now in your life... at least you're not surrounded, cut off, out numbered, malnourished, and under-led by a bunch of generals and colonels who literally had no idea what, when, and where to attack let alone knowledge of their positions and their fellow units.

We all know the name, we all heard the stories and the legends, the beauty, and the greatness of Cleopatra. Only problem is that history has confused this leader and failed her biography time and time again. In this episode, Kara looks into the life of Cleopatra and the misconceptions surrounding key moments in her life. Your friendly neighborhood emu loving history nut, Kara, teleports us back to Mrs. O'Leary's cow that supposedly knocked over a gas lamp and caused one of the worst BBQ disasters in American history. In 1871 Chicago was like any other booming American city, replete with enough combustible materials and a grossly deficient fire brigade, that one has to wonder how Chicago made it this far without burning down prior. Kara will explore why Mrs. O'Leary was blamed for the disaster; what happened prior to that fateful day; how the city actually burned; how the rich faired better than the poor (just like any other disaster); and how the city rebuilt itself from the ashes. Yet no one thought to rename the city Phoenix...
Warning: a lot of super creepy 1870's children's dolls were destroyed in the fire and to be honest I'm ok with that

In our very first multi part episode, Kara dives into the world of every one favorite childhood game, "The Oregon Trail." So many people in the 1830s through the 1870s thought that it would be a good idea to pack up what they could and march out west in hopes of find, gold, land, and even furs... However what they found was impassible terrains, dysentery, starvation, and death. Join us as we explore what sparked this migration out west and why it's a good idea to just stay put....

Kara has finished part deux of the Oregon Trail Fire. In this episode we look at all the ways fate, nature, and even internet memes sickened and killed a lot of folks who were just trying to get out west. Join us as we dive into the world of dysentery, cholera, snake bites, and even being overrun by angry buffalo (who inspired the Emus in Australia) as means to get yourself sick or killed while on the road. We even include acts of god like like lightning strikes and being run over by a wagon. Hey everyone! After a brief hiatus, Ed and Kara are back with a new episode for the benefit of your ear meat...
In this episode we go back to the 80's computer technology, radiation therapy machines, and Demigorgons were all the rage. While Hawkins Indiana was being destroyed by an interdimensional being with serious "daddy issues," The Atomic Energy Canada Limited released the all knew and highly sophisticated radiation therapy machine called Therac 25 to treat cancer. This machine was the first of its kind where it was now operated by a computer because humanity developed a fear of turning nobs and stuff. Marketed at the safest radiation machine ever, it came as a shocker when people were suddenly being zapped with 15,000 to 20,000 rads of radiation... which seems a tad overkill to be honest.
Also for the first time Ed and Kara has a guest onboard. A legit radiation dosimetrist, which is a fancy name for someone who shoots people with radiation to reduce or kill cancer. In this episode Cameron Beatty will help everyone understand what happened with this machine, why it was malfunctioning, and why 15,000 to 20,000 rads of radiation is too high (most treatments involves 7 to 10 rads, you can't even cook a cup of instant noodles with that), and how this sort of issue doesn't happen today.

Hey everyone!
Got a question for you: Have you ever had to compete against someone who you felt was inferior in every aspect only to find out that your opponent not only is smarter, faster, and more capably than you in every aspect of the competition? At what point do you realize that you're in over your head, and at what point have you realized that this competition is not going to end well?
If you've ever found yourself in this predicament, then you can relate to George Armstrong Custer. Custer was the Union's golden child of the Civil War and his charisma and zeal often "won the day" in intense battles; many of which Custer charged head first in front of his men and proved his valor time and time again.
And yet with Custer's leadership background, superior technology, and advanced training... he lost quickly to a force that was inferior to the technology... but was WAAAAY more advanced in leadership and tactics of the Lakota.
In this first of three parts of the fabled story of Custer's Last Stand, Ed and Kara take a look at Custer himself and try to understand him as a human being. Yes he was delusional at times; yes he was a bit "too over zealous" in battle, but he was also a confident man who DEEPLY loved his wife, and a man who just wanted to get the job done.

Ed and Kara are back this week with a beast of an episode for you. It’s been a long time coming, but Ed has finally dug into one of the worst air disasters of the 20th century, the Hindenburg fire!
The Hindenburg was the largest dirigible? Blimp? Zeppelin? floaty thingy the world had ever seen. This thing was designed from the ground up to be comfortable, fast, and most importantly SAFE. Even though the thing was filled with highly flammable hydrogen gas, the Germans really did think of everything and we don’t mean that in a sarcastic way… they really did think of everything.
So how in the world did the Hindenburg burn to the ground in less than 40 seconds?
The answer is in the episode! So take a listen and discover how one of the greatest technological marvels of the modern era came crashing down in the most dramatic way possible.
This episode has a ton of pictures and diagrams and what not, so be sure to check out The Day’s Dumpster Fire website for all the details. You’ll also get to see the back catalog of nearly 60 historical dumpster fires as well as a collection of Kara’s insanely good artwork.
Be sure to send Kara and Ed an email at thedaysdumpsterfire@gmail.com for show ideas and even corrections. We here at the Day’s Dumpster Fire love all feedback as it makes the whole team better so that you can get the best content possible.
In this episode, Kara and Ed talked about the following episodes that you may find interesting. All of which can be found on The Day’s Dumpster Fire website!

In 1904, the city of St. Louis won the bid to house one of the new Olympic games. In this episode, Kara is diving into the wild and whacky events that took place in these games— including women racing to win a pound of tea, marathon runners being denied water and only given alcohol, and one dude even being poisoned with strychnine.
The 1904 Olympics was one for the history books—before you know it, everything will fly off the rails. So sit back and relax with a sports drink of your choice… like brandy—and enjoy the chicanery.

In this second episode, Ed explores one of the most disastrous military campaigns in modern history. A young Winston Churchill and First Lord of the Navy, comes up with a brilliant, unflappable plan to use the mighty British Navy in the early days of WW I to take over the Dardanelles Strait and knock out the Turkish army in one fowl swoop. This plan of attack was ambitious and perfectly thought out, until 10 minutes after the battle starts, Churchill ends up sinking a majority of his ships and stranding tens of thousands of men in a desolate wasteland for months... ultimately costing Churchill his government career.

Finally the trio are back together again in the bedroom turned into a janky recording studio.

The time as come to share the rest of the events that befell Robert Falcon Scott and his crew between January and March of 1912. If you have not listened to Episode 31. Terra Nova Fire, you might want to go back take a listen to that episode before listening to this one.
In the first part, Ed sets the stage for the world wide craze of being the first one to set foot on the southern geographic south pole. The men who explored Antarctica were next level, and humanity hasn't quite seen this type of breed of man in quite some time. Yes these explorers all knew each other and they were all competing against each other, but they carried a ton of respect for each other.

In this episode, Kara comes out swinging with one of the most strangest dudes in all of human history... Roman Emperor Caligula.
In four short years, Caligula reshaped the glam-life of the ultra wealthy and put together a rather strange "court" if that is even a thing today or back then.
Caligula started off with all the potential one could ask of an emperor, but quickly went tits up. While the jury is still out on this guy's rationalism for his actions; he undoubtedly accomplished great things, while also destroying himself.
Kara does a great job in this episode proving the point that the number one cause of death of being a Roman emperor... is BEING A ROMAN EMPEROR!!!

Contemporary mindset, mixed religious and political theory, with a splash of orthodoxic Old Testament interpretation... What could possibly go wrong?
Note! We here at the Day's Dumpster Fire are strictly cautionary story tellers. No one on the team bears any ill will or disrespect to any race, creed, nationality, or gender. We're just a big bunch of nerds that are trying to tell stories of human history where we could have done things differently to prevent... well... dumpster fires***

It took a hot minute and a ton of feedback, but Kara and Ed got the long anticipated second part of, "I Love The Smell of Lead" episode.

Be sure to absolutely alienate everyone you know and get them to subscribe to the this podcast. Kara and Ed are working on a donation plate to pass around where they can make about 1 to 1.5 dozens of dollars per episode LOL.

In this episode, Ed address that question you might have about why gas pumps say "unleaded gasoline only." Well it turns out some people in the 1920s thought that adding lead to gasoline helps your car run smoother and overall better. Even though most people since the ancient Romans understood that lead isn't good for the body.

We've all seen the movie 300 which means we're all experts on the battle of Thermopolaye... Thermopolis... Thermopolae... or however it's spelled. We all know how 300 Spartans, with amazing muscles and abs, were able to fend off the thousands of men at the hands of the evil God-King Zerxes... Xerzees...

Guess who's back!
Sit back, relax, plug your earholes with some electrified magnets and relish the return of the top 150,000th podcast in Kalispell, Montana.

In what was suppose to be a bonus episode for the hit release of Christopher Nolan's movie, Oppenheimer, Ed and Kara took a deep dive into J.

Lastly we want to do a huge shout out to our top listener in the UK! We don't know who you are, but everyone on The Day's Dumpster Fire team appreciates you from across the pond, or the drink, or... whatever it's called. We in the Colonies think you're awesome!
Kara and Ed are always interested in "Trashcan Fires" stories of how the listeners have tried to plan out something their lives down to the last detail and shortly after you execute the plan, EVERY thing flies off the rails.

ˈpaʊl ˈluːtvɪç hans ˈantoːn fɔn ˈbɛnəkn̩dɔʁf ʔʊnt fɔn ˈhɪndn̩bʊʁk (I hate you Wikipedia).
Join us as we look into the first part of George Armstrong Custer and what led up to his down fall in some place called "Greasy Grass"...
Hey all!
If you're looking to get sick, injured, maimed, bifurcated, and overall miserable, then this is your one stop shop to remind you just how well you have it.
Hey All!
In this episode your hosts Ed and Kara look at how something so simple or mundane as BREAD can potentially kill you some day. Granted TODAY'S bread shouldn't cause much harm but that wasn't the case for Victorian Era England! While coal powered the factories the BREAD powered the workers and it's interesting to see how much the bread of the day was altering the productivity of tomorrow.
Warning: a lot of super creepy 1870's children's dolls were destroyed in the fire and to be honest I'm ok with that
In this episode Ed and Kara dive into the electrifying world of nuclear powerplants. Love'em or hate'em, nuclear powerplants are a fact of life and they generate reliable electricity for decades... until something goes wrong. This episode will look at how these masterpieces of human engineering can literally blow up and what happens to the environment and the people living nearby when thousands of pounds of radio active fallout blankets everything. Dumpster fires don't get much more dramatic than nuclear powerplants failing.
What self respecting podcast about nuclear powerplants would be complete if we don't cover Chernobyl, but we'll also look at Three Mile Island and Fukushima.
Caution: your hosts are not responsible if you feel like you have radiation poisoning after listening to this episode. False symptoms could include:
We all know the name, we all heard the stories and the legends, the beauty, and the greatness of Cleopatra. Only problem is that history has confused this leader and failed her biography time and time again. In this episode, Kara looks into the life of Cleopatra and the misconceptions surrounding key moments in her life. Ultimately, Cleopatra's life has been told and retold by generations of scholars who tend to see things with all the educational acumen of the "Y" chromosome.
The story of Cleopatra has been a dumpster fire for centuries and hopefully Kara can help extinguish this inferno once and for all.
Note: no one carrying a "Y" chromosome was injured during the making of this episode.
Hey all!
Exciting times await Kara and Ed as they finally introduce the pilot episode for The Day's Dumpster Fire, where we don't celebrate humanity's successes, but it's most fantastic failures.
In this episode the hosts share what this spoopy little podcast is about, who the hosts really are during the daytime and fanatical failures at night as well as other housekeeping things like contact information and the first foray into social media.
In this episode, our very own Emu expert, Kara, takes us back in time to the Australian wilderness where farms and homesteads were being overrun and destroyed by insurgent Emus who were really just looking for a bite to eat. Buckle up as Kara tells the harrowing tale of the Australian government declaring war on thousands of Emus and heroic acts of a few soldiers with machine guns in the early 1930s.
Let's just say, Emus have a lot of grit and gave these soldiers a run for their money!
