Andy Fritz started modifying Russian military rebreathers back in 1997 initially for personal use, but soon enough divers would travel to Thailand to get their rebreathers modernized and themselves trained to use them. Other popular rebreathers had their share of modification as well. The common theme was mechanical O2 addition through needle valves and after around seven hundred hours of virtually, problem free diving, the decision to manufacture a rebreather from scratch was made. Mainly because it was difficult to improve the trim and buoyancy characteristics of the many rebreathers modified. One other reason was that exploring a particularly remote site in 90 meters of water called for a closed-circuit rebreather that could be expanded with a large capacity scrubber. The definitive version Pelagian DCCCR prototype was extensively test dived for four months before production started.

When saving the world is not enough.
This part is focus on the intriguing side of being able to write a series, on evolution, on aliens, deep waters, low oxygen environments, life and more…
Series
Middle Waters
“A techno science fiction thriller that is grounded in what we know of our physical world yet explores our dreamtime fears about the nature of the alien unknowable. It’s part of a tradition that spans Jules Verne to James Cameron. It’s the story of a brilliant man, a scientist named Jason Parker, who confronts something that not only challenges his core beliefs but threatens to destroy them.”
Triangle
Superpowers race to recover alien technology. Russians retrieve a UFO in Lake Baikal, and the U.S. Navy orders saturation divers to risk everything to salvage a spacecraft that may not exist. Jason Parker must ensure the divers’ safe return; the balance of world power depends on mission success, a blind remote viewer, and a Troll named Truman.
Atmosphere
Atmosphere is author John Clarke at his best – writing authoritatively about science in a compelling narrative that weaves what we know with that which we are on the verge of knowing. In this, the final installment of the Jason Parker trilogy, Clarke gives us the third act of an end-of-the-world saga in which the question is not just survival, but transcendence; at stake is the next step forward in human evolution.
The characters feel like old friends, especially Jason and his elusive love interest Laura Smith, and the imagined interplanetary and geopolitical background of the novel seems oddly familiar. Clarke builds on a story arc first established by Middle Waters that shatters our everyday view of the reality to reveal the surprising and sometimes terrifying truth that lurks beneath. What began as an adventure about frog-like aliens hiding in the deep oceans now becomes a desperate attempt to save humanity with the help of extraterrestrial technology.
In Atmosphere, Clarke has tackled one of the biggest challenges facing a writer of science fiction – what is there new and surprising to say about the end of the world? – and succeeds brilliantly. —– Max McCoy, award-winning author, and journalist. and writer of four licensed Indiana Jones adventures for Bantam.

A Conversation with Charlie Roberson
FATHOM Dive Systems is a design and manufacturing company that focuses on life-support equipment for underwater exploration. FATHOM is the brainchild of Charlie Roberson, a cave diver and active explorer, who initially set out to make equipment for his own exploration. This is our story.
Several years ago, as our dives became increasingly deeper and longer duration, my fellow Karst Underwater Research (KUR) divers and I recognized the need for a new closed-circuit rebreather (CCR) with excellent work-of-breathing and long scrubber duration that would stand up to the rigors of cave exploration. While there were a number of capable CCRs on the market, all had one or more features that either eliminated it from consideration or would require costly modifications to fit our purposes. The last thing we wanted was to spend thousands of dollars on new units only to strip them down and spend thousands more retrofitting them with different parts.
Unable to find an existing unit that met our requirements, I started to design what would eventually become the Fathom CCR. There are no easy decisions when it comes to rebreather design and every choice, every dimension, every o-ring, was debated endlessly with fellow KUR divers. Ultimately, the final decisions were mine and my background as a machinist in the US Navy and Hogarthian/DIR cave diver guided me towards simplicity and functionality.
Several years and dozens of units later, our goal remains the same, to design and produce the most innovative, functional, and reliable equipment for underwater exploration.

About Bill
I’m a former U.S. Navy photographer and photo-journalist. I live in the U.S. territory of Guam, in the Western Pacific Ocean. I love to travel and have visited 29 countries (so far). I was certified as a PADI Open Water Diver in 1982. Today, I’m a PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer and teach part-time while I’m attending college. I’m currently a full-time student at the University of Guam where I’m taking classes towards a BS in Biology.
I moved to Guam for the ease of access to much of the worlds great diving. Not only is Micronesia at our doorstep, it’s only a short flight to the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia. The diving in Guam is pretty good too 🙂.
