Tonight we’re talking about compromise and I’ll teach you a specific strategy. Get your spouse on TikTok right now, the person you love the most, whoever that is… join me together every Sunday to talk about getting through hard stuff and fostering a healthier relationship.
You’re listening to episode 77 with a live TikTok audience.
Tonight’s episode is made possible by Mona, our third official sponsor who honors her late father Mohammed Sanjakdar. She hopes you will join her in supporting this show as a way to honor those who helped you learn about love.

I want to take a moment to celebrate. I started this show almost a year ago and after tonight, I will have shared all of the core relationship skills I think you need. You can watch and listen to 76+ episodes on YouTube and wherever you get your podcasts.
Shout out to our moderators for fostering a supportive environment. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments and I’ll get to them later.
Let’s dive into how to love more fiercely. Let’s start with when we need compromise the most: during gridlocked perpetual issues.
What is that?
Example: gridlock around their dinner-time routine: one person wants to sit down at the table each night to share a meal while the other person prefers to eat on the go, especially if they’re getting home late, which is a common occurrence.
We need to feel safe in order for a compromise to work, for this dialogue and process to be maximally effective.
RIFF:
To remember:
Compromise never feels perfect.
Everyone gains something and everyone loses something in a compromise.
The important this is feeling understood, respected, and honored in your dream.

Let’s talk about the skills necessary to navigate narcissism.
In all things on this show, we talk about first attending to ourselves. So I’ll ask you, if you’re listening to this right now and have been told by one or more people, that you’re egocentric, self-absorbed, defensive, and maybe even contemptuous, I’ve got an amazing skill that will help you reach your fullest potential.
It’s called accepting influence and adoring your partner like yourself, loving them as you would want to be loved. This might sound scary, but especially if you’re a heterosexual man, your well-being and relationship satisfaction will actually increase when you are more accepting of your partner’s influence.
This may seem impossible if you or someone out there has a more rigid version of this in terms of a personality disorder.
1 in 200 people, 75% of men can display narcissistic traits/relational patterns that ride to the level of a disorder, meaning it’s negatively impacting several spheres of their life including social relationships.
That’s. .5% of the population. Instead, I want to talk about two topics: self-esteem and emotional connection.
So what about the other 99.5% of people in relationships who aren’t narcissists but lack the skills to truly emotionally connect, to truly adore our partner, to be open to their feedback, to their needs and desires, and see these desires as valid as our own.
Incorporating a simple ritual of emotional connection where everyone gets heard and validated routinely, is a great way to practice seeking understanding and validating. The SRC is one example of this.
More on the episode: answering live questions from the show!
Welcome back to A Better Love, I'm your host, Dr. Greg, today we're diving into step-parent relationships across families with children and just the beginning of the conversation about integrating family systems and doing the best you can.
If you're new to the podcast, I'm Dr. Greg, a board-certified couple and family psychologist, and the full-time content creator @abetterloveproject. Today's episode is sponsored by one of our founding sponsors, Molly. Thank you to Molly for your generosity and for this episode.
Let’s first name the players on stage, the possibilities are endless but may begin with two biological parents and one or two step-parents oh, we're in the words of one of our other donors mentioned, a bonus mom or dad. I appreciate that sentiment. And then the child or children across these 2-4 adults.
From the vantage point of biological parents introducing new people into the family system, I’d suggest being deliberate, supportive, and nurturing healthy relationships across the system. That can begin with when you first introduce a new woman or man to your kids, deciding for yourself, the pace that happens, the meaning you build around this new emotional connection for your kids, and their involvement with normal daily activities that are involved in parenting for serious relationships.
From the perspective of communication between biological parents and a new step-mom or step-dad, aspirationally we’d love for there to be great communication and support there, particularly if your children are younger. The new person can be seen as a force multiplier, another member of the greater team supporting your kid’s growth.
And from the vantage point of a child, it’s important to see all the adults playing nicely with one another in the sandbox. Where else do our children learn what is possible in adult relationships, if not by watching us live our life? Their developing minds crave consistency, emotional support, a sense of safety, and belongingness, all these things can be nurtured in a new version of the family system with step-parents.
I understand that it’s difficult to make this a reality in our lives. Many families struggle with disagreements around parenting, antagonism between the three primary players, and negative impacts on children’s mental health abound. Let’s talk about three specific tips you can try to start off on the right foot as new adults are joining the family system:
If you’re a step-parent who is experiencing ongoing conflict-related to family system adjustment challenges, consider reaching out to a local family therapist or psychologist who can help the entire system do a better job.
We’ll continue to talk about parenting and family systems as we develop our web series later this year. If you have specific relationship science you’d like to help share with the world, I hope you’ll consider joining our current 26 donors as a sponsor of the show.

Transcript:
…today we’re talking about non-monogamy and since it’s the first time we’re talking about it here, I’ll start with a broader framework that I consider when thinking about couples I’ve worked with who were non-monogamous. I’ve got a book recommendation at the end of the episode as well, so let’s dive into it.
I want to start by clarifying my cultural views and biases on this topic as a way to acknowledge that each of us has our own values and belief systems. When you work with a couples therapist, it’s totally relevant to ask about their work with open relationships and polyamorous couples to date and their overall view of healthy relationships as it relates to these forms of love.
I was raised in a somewhat socially conservative family which has obviously evolved over time on a range of subjects. However, there really wasn’t an option except for monogamy in my home as much as I’m sure for many of you, monogamy remains the dominant strain of romantic relationships in the world. Non-monogamous relationships account for only about 1-4% of romantic relationships.
My views of non-monogamy have evolved with my training and clinical experience, though admittedly my work with non-monogamous couples is slim. There are probably lots of reasons for that including barriers to care that involve stigma and overall a lack of funding for research of non-monogamous couples to build out our foundation of knowledge and training in the field.
So here are three points I want to be clear about:
There are, in fact, many healthy non-monogamous relationships in the world.
I believe it's productive to view our relationships as social constructions, agreements between two or more people that are chosen freely and without coercion.
I believe that core healthy relationship skills are equally necessary for all versions of romance, love, partnership, friendship, etc.
I’d say for most of us who were raised to view monogamy as the only choice, that monogamy will likely be the easiest choice to make and, relationship skills being equal, would lead to fewer friction points, adjustment difficulties, and the like. The bottom line here is: you can suck at relationships regardless of whether you’re monogamous or not, you can be a disaster doing the most traditional thing ever, the rules might be different but living the rules with trust, commitment, persistent attention, emotional connection, good conflict management, they’re all equally powerful in determining the health of your love.

-- TranscriptFor our listeners who didn’t have childhoods like this but are bored in their relationships, I’d recommend you take the pulse of how stimulating your love is. We’ll do another episode on this later.
For now, let’s talk about loves with folks who may have symptoms of complex post-traumatic stress. The prevalence rate for complex PTSD is .5 to .7%. If you’re listening and you experienced a very chaotic childhood like this listener, your relationship with adrenaline is going to be important to understand. The worst thing, is if this was happening for you, and you ignored it.
As I mentioned on a recent episode about anxious attachment, we adapt for survival and then these adaptations can persist into adulthood. They don’t work well now.
Hearing you’re feeling bored in day-to-day life isn’t a surprise to me. I'm a combat veteran and have worked with many people who have experienced combat, sexual violence, and unimaginably horrific childhoods. Our response to trauma will be different based on the unique context of a trauma and how long it latest or reoccurred. Earlier trauma is often the hardest because you may have lived in a chaotic, toxic home your whole childhood.
My first suggestion is to you be curious about it and I think you’re in this space now. This will help you move beyond attending to just the boredom and asking yourself, what it is you want or need in that moment? What I mean by this is that your emotional life is likely a bit more complex than just this one dimension. Work to understand the full picture of your physiological and emotional experience.

Transcript:
For those of you who are listening and have ever been in a long-distance relationship you know for yourself the limitations and perhaps some of the benefits.
The benefit of physical distance is that you'll learn a lot about what a romantic relationship means to you. What are the most important parts? One study I looked at suggested 60% or more of respondents who have been in a long-term relationship report that the lack of physical intimacy is the biggest challenge, with 31% saying they were missing sex the most. It's definitely not surprising that physical intimacy was the biggest challenge, and I'm also not surprised that sex and sexual intimacy was as low as it is because any relationship that lasts pass in 3 or 4 months long distance is likely between two people With greater willingness to sacrifice this essential part of a fierce love.
Set for my listener who's struggling with this long-distance situation, I would have the following recommendations:
For those of you who are considering a long-distance relationship here are a few things that I wanted to share. First, for you high school sweethearts who experiment with a long-distance relationship oh, it's very common for college students to have a long-distance relationship oh, and it's also common for those to end at some point during the College Years.
For those of you who met online and wonder how many of those relationships persist into marriage, it seems that about 10% of marriages in the US started as long-distance relationships.
And for those of us who may have been dating during the pandemic and still now, it's more and more likely that you initiate romantic relationships in digital ways, connecting on dating apps, dating websites, etc.
It’s possible to have a fierce love that either begins online or with distance and has a period of physical separation. They include a very strong friendship building a deep understanding of one another, admiration fondness, effective conflict management and communication skills, lots of these things can be communicated effectively through video and voice and all the other ways that we...
Join Dr. Greg for today's audience-inspired episode about body image, feeling attractive, and how we can avoid critical and contemptuous conversations with our long-term partners.

Transcript: First, I want to acknowledge that there is a lot of suffering in our world today related to body image. It is disproportionately impacting women and young girls. However, young boys and men are not immune to having body image issues.
My professional views on how to navigate these issues in a healthy way are directly informed by the fact that I was trained as a psychologist by the military. I spent 4 years on active duty in the Marine Corps and another 3 years in the Navy.
The Marine Corps and navy as well as the other branches of the military have very specific height and weight requirements that will mean something very different to each and every service member. Yet, the overall mission of the military demands a level of physical fitness including strength, endurance, good nutrition, etc.
The bottom line is when I'm talking about anything related to one's body in couples therapy. I'm talking about it in the context of Health, Wellness, and my clients' values.
Yet, recent reporting on the impact of social platforms on particularly young girls and women, calls each of us to consider our own relationship to our body and its impact on our overall health. Why?
Let's start with the message we communicate in our own home around food, nutrition, eating, body weight, and all the other things related to body image.
And I want to focus on right now, even though I know for many of my listeners it's the case that they themselves heard critical messages around either their bodies or other people's bodies. If that is the case, are you currently talking about and thinking about these things differently? In a way worthy to be passed on to your kids or those who look up to you?
If we think poorly of ourselves when we look at ourselves, how could we not be shaped by that? I’ve worked with many who restrict themselves, who binge, who sometimes are only drinking water. It’s so important that we understand the mind x body connection here and get medically evaluated and commit to individual therapy to address these issues.
In our relationships, we need to understand our partner's experiences. If her husband or wife struggled with being picked on in high school or middle school for their weight, for instance, we’ll more easily understand the importance of our words, how we touch, how we love. Sadly, that’s often not the case.
With some of our listeners on Tik-Tok and definitely with folks that I've worked within the past, partners can be cruel. They can be insensitive. They can be unthinking. The worst: making their love conditional, predicated on the partner going to the gym or losing weight or whatever.
In my view, it may be in foreign 4 that a partner who is feeling less attracted to their wife or husband gets some emotional validation around that experience from maybe a close friend or an individual therapist. Yet, when it comes to the relationship, it's critically important that conversation around this be contextualized within the couple’s values about living a long, healthy life centered around a lifestyle they both value. If that includes cooking healthy meals together, going on Long hikes throughout the week or running together, going to the gym together, then cool. But if that's not you, it's okay too. These things will likely lead to many psychological and physical benefits, including balanced nutrition, better sleep, better sex, etc.
...
Welcome back to A Better Love, I'm your host, Dr. Greg, today we're talking about anxious attachment styles and post-traumatic stress symptoms. If you have experienced trauma in your life you're going to want to listen to today's episode.
First, let's answer the question: have I experienced trauma? if you grew up in a house where there was physical or psychological abuse If you experience sexual abuse or sexual assault if you've experienced War or intimate partner violence oh, it may be the case that you'll experience post-traumatic stress symptoms. briefly, these symptoms fall into several clusters including intrusions, avoidance, persistent alterations in cognition and mood, or hyperarousal.
If you had any of these kinds of experiences in childhood, oh, there's a high likelihood that your attachment style was shaped in a way that may lead to more anxiety or avoidance in your interpersonal attachments. it may be the case that you had this type of attachment with your primary caregiver. and lastly, it may be the case that your primary caregiver induced the trauma in the first place.
Let's pause for a moment so you can answer this question: have you experienced psychological trauma in your life?
Now let's consider whether you describe your attachment style as anxious. Do you experience persistent fear of interpersonal rejection or abandonment? Do you have excessive concerns about and desire for proximity to close others? Do you experience significant distress when relationship partners aren't immediately available or unresponsive?
If any of these things describe your experience in your current relationship or maybe past relationships, what you can develop is the awareness of where your attention and focus is going before, during, and after conflict with your partner.
Is your mind scouring your partner's words for indications of threat? in this case the threat of losing the person? This will definitely have an impact on your experience of the relationship. It will discuss in a moment my general recommendation is it going to be for folks who tend to have a more anxious attachment style.
Perhaps you have less of an anxious attachment style and more of an avoidant attachment. Do you experience discomfort with close interpersonal relationships? Are you excessively self-reliant? When you feel things intensely do you move away from the emotion so as to deactivate it in a way as a way of regulating it? folks with an avoidant attachment 10 to have challenges acknowledging negative emotional states in themselves, they tend not to seek social support end of the attachment styles this group of people is likely to experience proportionately higher rates of depression.
The connection between these two attachment Styles and post-traumatic stress is the following: first, those who have these styles tend to report more post-traumatic stress symptoms than folks with secure attachment styles. The general take-home here is that strong emotional connection to family and friends after trauma serves as a protective factor in later experiencing PTSD symptoms, in other words being diagnosed with PTSD in the first place.
For listeners who may have experienced trauma in their childhoods, post-traumatic stress often becomes much more complex and is stickier to work through. and this gets me to my general recommendation here which is not going to surprise any of my listeners.
There's a significant benefit to those who have experienced physical emotional or sexual abuse neglect, and from intimate partner violence to combat. It's important to integrate processes and make meaning of these experiences. and in relationships oh, it will be important for our partners to understand these difficult parts of our story. I've worked with many combat veterans to be able to share meaningfully with their loved ones and build context

Couples who have rituals of touching base about their day and life outside of the relationship are able to strengthen their emotional connection. This is especially important for military families and veterans who are often adjusting to new duty locations, deployment or training mobilizations, etc.
This month we're focused on the resilience of veterans and their families, exploring topics particularly important to them. After many years in the military and many working closely with veterans of all kinds, I'm diving into how we can strengthen our relationships in all sorts of ways. We're answering one of our TikTok viewer's questions on today's podcast: what to do about attentional issues getting in the way of remembering and understanding.
Let's start with this, our TikTok videos are 9-seconds on average. Yet, to get 9-seconds of our attention these days is a challenge. What does that mean for our long-term relationships?
There are tons of changes that we can make in our life that will nourish healthier attention. In this episode, we dive into one strategy we can use when in conversation with our partner. Tomorrow we'll talk more about the Stress-Reducing Conversation within Gottman's conceptualization.
Tip: Consult with a psychiatric nurse practitioner, physician, or psychiatrist about addressing chronic, long-standing inattention and/or hyperactivity. You can always start a conversation about this with your primary care doctor.
There is consensus in the field that a stimulant like Adderall or Ritalin can be an effective tool in addressing attentional issues that begin in childhood. In adulthood and in long-term relationships, options continue to exist and all are encouraged to consult with local mental health professionals about those options.

Join Dr. Greg, a board-certified couples psychologist, to discuss how to love less conditionally in our romantic relationships and with our kids.
We want to distinguish between self-worth and the availability of our love and affection. Kids who have parents who are emotionally validating regardless of their progress toward goals (i.e. academic, extracurricular) fare easier in romantic relationships.
Marriage, for instance, has us showing up as ourselves every day with a partner for decades at a time. We want to feel loved as we are, regardless of transient moods or any given day in a 10+ year relationship.
The same goes for kids, who soak up critical or contemptuous messages that hurt their self-esteem, efficacy, and sense of self-worth. When talking to their kids, it’s helpful for parents to stay focused on their life-affirming values and less on what a child may not be doing particularly well at that moment.
When a child develops strong self-worth through positive reinforcement versus criticism, they can thrive. And when they start their own relationships, they’ll do so with greater self-esteem and relational skills.

Are you scrolling through TikTok in your bed right before bedtime? Here’s a great place to start a new bedtime ritual for the whole family: phones away an hour before we go to sleep!
Listen for all three ways to make positive changes this week.

Join Dr. Greg, a board-certified couples psychologist, to discuss commitment and how trust develops in the early parts of a long-term relationship.
Trust and commitment are essential ingredients to a long-term relationship. Yet, a common issue I hear about is a mismatch of commitment. What commitment looks like will differ across the span of your relationship, but a common theme is consistency.
If your partner is consistently communicating their desire for commitment through their words and actions, trust and commitment will rather naturally deepen.
Depending on attachment styles and individual histories, this process will unfold uniquely for all of us.
If you’ve been dating for over a year, it’s likely you’ve had conversations about commitment (i.e. long-term plans and dreams). It’s also likely, particularly if you’ve lived with someone, that you’ll have learned a lot about them and how consistent they are with things you value. Let that guide your discernment if things don’t appear to be “on track” for you.
It’s super helpful to take part in traditions that allow discernment and deeper exploration of what long-term commitments mean to each partner. Created sharing meaning about anything, marriage included, will be critical to staying emotionally connected to each other and the dream.
This commentary presumes a general desire for long-term, monogamous relationships. Not all people have that desire and some certainly experience relationships and love outside of marriage. The important thing is that you live aligned with your values and the kind of love life you want to create. Let mutual respect and admiration be your guide.

Join Dr. Greg, a board-certified couples psychologist, Monday mornings for a short but deep dive into the skills necessary to love more fiercely. It will help you set relationship goals for your week.
This week, we’re talking about romance mostly in the context of long-term relationships. If you’re single and dating, don't go anywhere. It’s important to be attuned to how your desires for romance, passion, and sex are being met from the beginning.
There’s a lot that needs tweaking in the dominant narrative of human sexuality and long-term relationships. It’s not something that evolution teaches us how to do well naturally in longer-term relationships (especially in today's changing relationship landscape). Yet, it’s possible to pair raw desire and good science to deepen your passion for the long run.
As our appetite, desires, and comforts shift over time, we’ll want more of some things and less of others. It’s important to keep your partner updated.
Make romance a daily thing by staying emotionally connected and flirty through touch, words, and a million other ways that will be unique to your love.

We do a deep dive on the first four sessions of couples therapy in this model as well as some things to look for in starting therapy, in general.
Definitely save this one and share it with anyone who’s ever been curious about the beginning of couples' work. While there are several evidence-based models out there, this is the one primarily.
Bottom line: make sure your provider does a solid assessment and you have a sense, “they get it” after their assessment. It’s essential that each client begins to feel understanding and emotional validation from their therapist from the start, so they can do the hard work that lies ahead.

Have you ever thought, “how can you say that?” It often comes up in conflict when we can’t understand our partner’s perspective. Chances are, they aren’t understanding yours either.
A healthy presumption to make in a loving relationship is that you’re both invested in understanding each other, especially in conflict.
The Gottman’s Aftermath of a Regrettable Incident or Fight is a map toward that goal.
My recommendation this week, have those conversations in the context of a weekly “just you” time where you get to share gratitude and talk about loving each other well. This is a great ritual of emotional connection, a State of the Union convo.
Honest, gentle conversations about anything are cool. I’d recommend reserving SOTUs for relationships that are more developed, where you’ve found yourself organically talking about “us” already.

This week's podcast dives into your relational schemas, part of your "rulebook" for relationships.
If you're dating, knowing what healthy looks like is super important. These internal guidelines set the tone at the start of a relationship with healthy boundaries and clearly articulated desires.
If you've been together for 1+ years, here's something to consider together. Think of two couples, the one the two of you consider the healthiest and one you think is the unhealthiest. Understanding each other's roadmaps is important now and if you're interested in ever having children.
If you have kids, you could be conductors of a beautiful symphony for them, letting them witness kindness when in conflict, emotional validation, affection, etc. These early experiences for kids nourish their emotional health, foster a sense of safety and predictability, and hopefulness about their own capacity to love well.
Happy Labor Day Weekend everyone!

In this week's 8-minute summertime podcast, I talk about:
To be in a long-term relationship is to choose a partner with strengths and relative weaknesses. We all have areas that we're growing in (naming emotions, listening for understanding, settling after getting flooded, etc.).
Shout out to Carl Rogers, positive regard, validation, and authenticity.
