Say you are looking for a new car and are researching online on car sites.  Suddenly you see a new car insurance ad promising discounts and low prices.  It seems odd, however, as you requested “no cookies” when you went to the auto websites. Instead, you may be a participant in contextual advertising.

With cookie restrictions and privacy guardrails growing, contextual advertising is making a fast and furious return.  It can be an effective way to target media for your potential customers who are opting out of cookies and protecting their privacy.

Through contextual advertising planning, marketers rely less on a customer’s data or personal information and instead leverage themes of content to deliver appropriate ads for the consumer. It is believed that a customer who searches and investigates a particular piece of content would also be in the market for relevant products associated with that content.

In this podcast, Luci Rainey and guest Ben Gaddis, former CEO of T-3 Advertising and Partner at Superstep Capital, discuss winning strategies to leverage contextual advertising to drive new customers or increase brand consideration. As a long-time CEO in the advertising agency space, Ben knows firsthand how to leverage creative strategies for clients to drive business growth and guided clients such as All-State, UPS, 7-Eleven, and Staples.  Ben is a frequent writer, speaker, and moderator and has been featured in Forbes, Wired, TechCrunch, The Wall Street Journal, NPR, and Bloomberg TV, among others.

The auto aftermarket is proving itself adaptable as of late consistently outperforming forecasts in the face of automotive industry trouble. Smarter and budget-conscious consumers are keeping their cars longer, especially in face of higher interest rates and a looming recession. The pandemic also led more consumers into do-it-yourself mode which resulted in an increase in online shopping for aftermarket parts and accessories. Maintaining a strong online identity is now a necessity, and the acceleration of digital channels means brands must keep up or get left in the dust.

In this discussion, hosted by Luci Rainey, former SVP of Marketing at Comcast and PODS, we will hear from John Williamson, Chief Digital and Technology Officer at TBC Corporation, one of North America’s largest marketers of automotive replacement tires with recognizable brands such as NTB, Tire Kingdom, Big O Tires and Midas. With over 25 years of experience in leading strategies for brands including Citibank, JP Morgan, Verizon, and Comcast, John will discuss how he is driving an innovative digital transformation at TBC to meet the needs of today’s digital-first consumers.

The State of Mover Marketing | V12 Leadership Insights with Anders Ekman
*The following content has been adapted from V12’s Movers and Shakers Podcast.

Anders Ekman: What’s the state of move or marketing today?

The best way to think about mover marketing as a discipline is that it’s in transition.

There are a lot of marketers, particularly at the local level, who still take advantage of mover marketing the way it has been—and that’s terrific. There is no doubt that if that’s working, marketers should continue to do that.

However, brands are experiencing different levels of success based on how aggressively they lean into mover marketing.

Brands that are taking advantage of the advancements in mover marketing are showing better results. For example, our research shows that mover marketing users are more than twice as likely to report best-in-class success from their marketing strategies. Additionally, 41% of organizations with a mover marketing strategy in place report significantly greater increases in both customer acquisition and retention.

I’ll refer to a case study we have with a large national retailer. This retailer is an aggressive mover marketer. They embrace the omnichannel approach and all the data and insights that are out there. By doing so, they’ve experienced gigantic increases in engagement and sales from pre-movers. They’ve seen a 14% sales conversion from using the pre-mover audience. This is just one example of a mover audience that really didn’t exist until V12 and Porch developed MoverTech.

As mover marketing’s evolution goes, there are some marketers that are perfectly content to experience mover marketing the way it’s been. But the majority falls somewhere in the middle, comprised of those that are seeking a better way to market to movers but might not know what that entails or how to get started.

And then, there are marketers who are implementing aggressive mover marketing programs with all the new capabilities that are out there—particularly those that are being delivered to the market by V12 and Porch—and are obtaining the impressive increases that we’ve come across in our market research.

So, if you’re one of those brands in the middle, this is where the opportunity is for you. You may have tried marketing to movers already but lack the insights and resources to leverage your mover marketing program to its full potential. You may hope that there’s a better way out there, and this is where we can help you get the most out of this opportunity.

What Does Mover Marketing Matter? | V12 Leadership Insights with Anders Ekman
*The following content has been adapted from V12’s Movers and Shakers Podcast.

Anders Ekman: Why does mover marketing matter? I think this is a question that’s on the minds of a lot of brands—probably because they regard mover marketing in the same old way—single channel, older data, less insight into the consumer and what they’re interested in. But today, the definition of mover marketing is radically different than a lot of marketers think it is. So, why does it matter?

The move represents a valuable opportunity to engage with a dynamic, in-market audience. At V12 and Porch, we’ve done a lot of research into both what consumers are interested in and when they buy, and how much they spend. So, how do marketers leverage mover marketing? And what impact does this have on their customer acquisition and retention efforts?

The move is the biggest “permission to spend” life event in marketing.

On average, consumers spend more than $11,000 on various items and services during the move. Additionally, this spending activity takes place within a very, very short period. The other thing that is fascinating about movers which presents a huge opportunity for brands, is, that 90% of movers tell us that they are willing to switch brands when they move.

So, what do you have? You’ve got an enormous amount of spending power.

You also have a lot of grand mobility, the ultimate jump ball, if you will, for marketers. The other thing that we’ve done at V12 and Porch, is a lot of precision research on mover buying interests and timing with The Harris Poll. We encourage you to download our Annual Mover Trends Report or talk to us about the insights that we have around timing and spending behavior.

What we’ve found, sorted, and netted out is that there is a lot of spending that gets concentrated in the pre-move. About half of the spending that takes place with movers happens before the move versus what the conventional wisdom has been, which is after the move.

So, back to the new definition of mover marketing, and why it matters. Well, it matters because there’s a lot of money at play. A lot of brand switching that goes on, and increasingly, now, there is a lot of insight into what consumers will buy and when and how. And so, that’s kind of number one from just a consumer opportunity standpoint. There is an enormous amount of opportunity well beyond what brands have thought to be the case.

What is Mover Marketing? | V12 Leadership Insights with Anders Ekman
*The following content has been adapted from V12’s Movers and Shakers Podcast.

Anders Ekman: Mover Marketing is a discipline and a category in the marketing realm that’s been going on for the last 20 or 25 years. Surely, any of you who have moved, remember the direct mail pieces showing up at your doorstep with coupons for local merchants and service providers. The goal of these direct mail campaigns is to help you get familiar with businesses in your new neighborhood and find the right brand connections.

Mover marketing has sort of been in the same place for the last couple of decades. The data sources have been the same, primarily focused on people who have already moved rather than people who are moving. The channels and routes to market have also typically been the same, with most brands spending their efforts solely on spent on direct mail programs.

However, it’s important to understand that today mover marketing offers so much more. Within V12 and Porch, we describe mover marketing as the art, science, and process of connecting brands with moving consumers throughout the entire move journey. This involves identifying these consumers and understanding where they are in the moving process. This level of insight enables brands to strategically place the right offer, on the right channel, at the right time.

Anders Ekman serves as President of V12, A Porch Company, and works with leading brands to realize the economic and customer experience potential of modern mover marketing. Anders led the transformation of the company into an omnichannel marketing and data powerhouse and played a pivotal role in Porch Group, Inc.’s acquisition of V12 in 2021.

*The following content has been adapted from V12's Movers and Shakers Podcast.

Anders Ekman: How Can Brands Take Advantage of Mover Marketing?

There are a variety of ways, but I will give you some indicators as to how we think of it at V12 and Porch.

The first way to leverage mover marketing is through a process that we call MoverMatch. MoverMatch is a process that we've created to flag our clients’ CRM databases with movers. MoverMatch identifies which of your current customers is in the moving process. Being able to know when your customers are moving presents an enormous amount of untapped opportunity is and critical from a retention standpoint.

A lot of marketers think about mover marketing as acquisition only. That is not true. The CRM or existing customer discipline around mover marketing presents maybe a larger dollars and cents opportunity than the acquisition kind of discipline does. Think about how expensive it is to acquire a customer. Think about all the spending that goes on during a move or could go on from your existing customer base that you’ve spent a lot of money securing. There are a lot of opportunities on the customer retention front.
