Tulasi plant is venerated by Hindus while the meaning of the name Tulasi being the incomparable one. It is said that the house of every Hindu must have a Tulasi plant. This plant needs a little sunlight and water to survive. It has many types such as Rama Tulasi, Krishna Tulasi, and Vishnu Tulasi.

It is believed in the Hindu culture that Lord Vishnu gets pleased if worshipped by Tulasi or a garland made out of Tulasi leaves. Keeping this plant at home can invite good luck and prosperity. The story goes that it all started with a quarrel between Lord Shiva and Indra, the god of the heavens. In order to annihilate Indra, Lord Shiva’s anger manifested as a ball of fire. Indra, realizing his folly, fell at Lord Shiva’s feet in abject surrender. And Shiva, as was his wont, forgave him, directing the ball of fire into the ocean. Therein it transformed itself into a child, stronger and more potent than any known creature on earth. Christened as Jalandhara, he grew to be a mighty youth. Jalandhar penanced and got a boon that he will live till eternity until he loses his Krishna kavach (his armor) and his wife loses her chastity. But arrogance soon got the better of him and he decided he would challenge the gods themselves.

In the meantime, he decided he would do well to enhance his status through marriage. And his eyes fell on the family of the great demon, Ravana, whose cousin, Kalanemi had a beautiful daughter, Vrinda. Like many families of demons who often had devout offsprings, Vrinda too was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. She sincerely believed that Vishnu had sent Jalandhara to her doorstep and immediately acquiesced to his proposal. The marriage was duly solemnized.

Vrinda loved her husband and constantly prayed for his welfare. It is believed that prayers become one’s protection and Vrinda’s prayer certainly became Jalandhara’s armour. With a vengeance he went against the gods, challenging and defeating them now. Until, he finally reached Lord Shiva. Not realizing that Shiva was, in reality, his father, not caring for the consequences of his action, Jalandhara attacked the almighty Mahadeva. And such was the power of Vrinda’s prayers, that even Shiva found it utterly impossible to destroy Jalandhara.

It was then that Lord Vishnu disguised himself as Jalandhara and appeared before Vrinda. Vrinda greeted the illusory Jalandhara who breached her chastity.

It was all the time Shiva needed. This broke the boon he was given and Jalandhara got killed. Shiva’s trident pierced Jalandhara and he lay dead before him.

But the story did not end there. Vrinda realized that she had been tricked. In legitimate fury, she turned on Lord Vishnu, “For this deception, I curse you,” she cried, “You will now be a black God, and be turned to stone. You will also take human birth and know the pangs of separation.” That’s why, legend has it that Lord Vishnu is the dark God, worshipped as the Shaligrama stone and suffered the loss of his wife as Rama avatar.

But Lord Vishnu would have the last word. He pointed out, “Vrinda, that you were loyal to your husband is most praise worthy. But did you pause to find out the nature of his activities? To support evil – is that not evil too? And that is why I say, since you had lost your discrimination, you will be reborn as the Tulsi, but a mere plant, nonetheless. But because you have been a firm and faithful devotee, I will grant you the status of my wife.” And so Vrinda died, to be reborn as Tulsi.

Lord Vishnu got turned into Saligrama and the curse of being away from wife got into reality during Ramavatar. Vishnu in the form of Saligrama got married to Tulasi on Prabodhini Ekadasi which is commemorated as the day of Tulasi Vivah. Later, Tulasi attained a divine status and was blessed to be the dearest of Lord Vishnu. Hence Lord Vishnu is always worshipped with Tulasi leaves.

.Once there was virtuous sage by the name Shilada, who did not have any children of his own. He decided to worship Lord Shiva to get a special child blessed by him. He prayed intensely and immersed himself in austerity for thousands of years. Pleased by his dedication, Lord Shiva finally appeared before Shilada. He said "Wake up dear Shilada and tell me what boon do you seek?" "My dear Lord, I have only one aspiration. I wish to have a child", replied Shilada. Shiva smiled and said "You shall have it soon", before vanishing from the place. Shilada returned home as a happy man, knowing that the Lord would bless him with a very good child. The next day he went to the farm to begin his ploughing, when he found a beautiful baby in the field before his plough. The baby was bright as sun. Shilada stared at the baby transfixed, when he heard a voice from the heaven, "SHILADA, TAKE THE CHILD. BRING HIM UP WELL!" Shilada was overjoyed as he took the boy home. He named the boy Nandi. Right from his childhood, Nandi was devoted to Lord Shiva. Shilada brought up the child with love and care. . He taught his son the Vedas, the arts of the medicine, fighting, dancing, singing and several other sacred texts. Nandi was a brillant boy and learnt everything very fast. Shitada felt very proud of the child. ‘Some years later, two sages , Mitra and Varuna came to Shilada’s home. "Welcome great sages!" Shilada gave the rishis some refreshments, "Please sit and make yourself comfortable, Shilada offered them his home for rest. "Nandi" Shilada called his son. Nandi came from inside the house. "Nandi please make sure these sages are well looked after.’Nandi smiled and nodded his head saying, "Yes father!" Nandi looked after the two sages well and after staying there for couple of days, the sages said its time to leave as they have to continue their journey. Before they leave, Shilada and Nandi both sought their blessings. Mitra and Varuna first blessed Shilada, "Have a long and happy life, Shilada. You have made us very happy!" When Nandi fell at their feet, the two sages looked slightly sad. Slowly they said, "Be well son! Be good to your parents and teachers!" And they walked off However Shitada noticed the change in the expression of the sages. He ran outside the house, "Great Rishis! he said breathlessly. He turned around and made sure that Nandi was inside the house and could not hear him, and asked the sages, "You looked sad while blessing my son!" "Is something wrong?"Mitra looked at Shilada with pity, "I cannot wish your son a long life..." Shilada was crestfallen. He asked "What is going to happen to my son?" "Your son, does not..." Varuna cleared his throat, "...does not have long to live, Shilada. | am sorry to bring this news to you, but that his fate." He said lamely, looking at the horrified expression on Shilada, face. Shilada stood there transfixed for a long time. After a long time, he slowly walked back home with stooping shoulders and a broken heart Nandi immediately guessed something was wrong, "What is it Father? What happened?" Nandi asked, vigorously shaking his father. ‘Slowly and painfully, Shilada narrated his conversation with the two sages. He expected Nandi to be scared or even that Nandi would even start crying. However Shilada was surprised when he saw Nandi is laughing. "You were scared of what the sages said!” Shilada wondered what could be so funny and looked at his son without any expression, "Father, you have told me that you have seen Lord Shiva..." Nandi said with great devotion in his eyes. "Anybody who has seen Lord Shiva cannot be afraid of what the sages just said.” "Father,if it is my fate to die, then Lord Shiva, can reverse my fate! He is the most powerful God and can do anything. Do you think he would let anything happen to us, when we worship him?" Nandi looked at his father. "I don't think so father.” Nandi said softly............

As per Hindu scripture, there are two words in Ekadashi Eka which means (1) and Dasha (10). Transforming actions of ten senses and mind from worldly objects to God is the true Ekadashi.

Ekadashi means we should control our 10 senses & 1 mind. One must not let vicious thoughts regarding lust, anger avarice, etc. enter in mind. Ekadashi is a penance that should be done only to realize & please God. Let me share a small story based on Padama Puranam, a Hindu Scripture about the History of Ekadashi.

In Satyuga, there lived a demon called Murdanav. He terrorized all good people and devotees on the earth as well as he scared all the Devaas also. So Devaas left heaven and took refuge to Lord Vishnu. They prayed lord Vishnu to protect them. God’s mercy towards his devotees is limitless. So he took off immediately on His fastest vehicle “Garuda”. He fought continuously for 1000 years with Murdanav of unbelievable strength and still he was fighting with full energy and power. So Lord Vishnu decided to change his strategy.

Lord Vishnu acted as if He was exhausted by the battle and hid in a cave in Himalayas. He decided to take a nap in this huge cave. Lord Vishnu along with all his ten senses and the mind inside, was taking a rest.

Murdanav reached to the cave by chasing lord Vishnu. He saw him sleeping inside the cave and followed Him. He took his sword to kill lord Vishnu. As he was about to swing the sword, suddenly an extremely beautiful & luminous lady playing with a sword emerged from lord Vishnu’s body.

Murdanav lured to her beauty & asked her to marry him. She said, “I would marry who can defeat me in battle” Murdanav agreed to her proposal. He started fighting with that divine lady. Eventually during the fight that divine lady defeated & slayed Murdanav.

Hearing the noise of fight, lord Vishnu woke up and saw that lady who killed Murdanav. Lord Vishnu called that lady, who emerged from Himself, by the name Ekadashi. That was the eleventh day of the waxing moon. Lord Vishnu pleased by her deed & said to ask a boon. The Ekadashi asked to Lord Vishnu that ‘as I evolved from your Ekadash Indriyas (eleven senses of the body) I shall be known as Ekadashi. I am filled with penance so I desire that people should observe Ekadashi Vrat and control their Ekadash Indriyas (Senses) on this day. On the day of my Vrat, no one should consume grains such as rice, wheat, beans etc.

Lord Vishnu agreed and ever since all Hindus perform Ekadashi Vrat by fasting or eating Falahari foods on the 11th day of bright half of the moon & dark half of the moon. Also Lord Vishnu said that devotees who observe the Ekadashi day with fasting and prayers would have his choicest blessings!
