My Creative Journey is a Podcast about the journey towards becoming a Full-Time Creative Entrepreneur. My name is Mike and I started this podcast in 2021 to document my journey towards becoming a Full-Time Photographer. I reflect on my successes/failures in Business as they happen in real time and share my honest experiences. Over the past couple of years I have been on a journey of Self Improvement, Creativity & Financial Independence and through this Podcast I hope to share some of my learnings and show you how you too can live a fulfilling life of creativity and most importantly happiness!
I'm back to talk about a big update in my life. I got a new job and I want to go through some of the reasons why. Sometimes in life you have to take one step back before you can take two steps forward.

If you're anything like me you probably have hundreds of creative ideas but you just never know when the right time is to start them or if you should even start them at all. I draw on my experiences launching my new podcast To Be Wed with my fiancé Emily and speak about how we got that up and running from idea to reality in under a month.

This episode we are thinking about where we are putting our energy & attention. Far too often we prioritise low value tasks in our businesses which result in no rewards and cause us to be out of business very quickly. Maybe we are trying to run multiple different side hustles that aren't really on the side of anything because our main business is struggling to stay afloat. I want to address these issues as they have occurred in my business and give you some practical tips on how to move forward in 2022.

Work/Life Balance is always something that I have struggled with as a creative person and I am sure a lot of others struggle with it too. I first started my Photography Business to be flexible and break free of the 9-5 work day but I quickly realised that I was working far more than 8 hours a day and often at the sacrifice of my personal life. In this episode I share some tips on how I have managed to get back a bit of my free time to spend on things that bring me joy and happiness.

Goal setting is always something that comes up at this time of year so I thought I would make a short episode and tackle some of my ideas around the topic. Recently I have been reflecting on my goals for 2021 to determine how many of them I have achieved. In that process I have discovered a trend within all the goals that I had set for myself this year and wonder whether there is a better way to go about the goal setting process. What if we could focus more on the lifestyle we want rather than items on a to-do list. I hope you guys enjoy this episode and it makes you think a little bit about your own goals for 2022.

This episode is my thoughts on how I have been trying to make my personal brand and my photography business stand out amongst all the noise out there today. In this episode I am speaking about something which I don't think gets enough attention and that is the financial struggles of creative people. I want to address the experiences I've had in the past with dealing with 'financial anxiety'. As a photographer or any other freelancer, there are always financial struggles on your business and sometimes these can compound and become all too much. Recently during the pandemic I was faced with the challenge of how to keep my business alive and financially afloat whilst I wasn't allowed to go out and work due to government imposed lockdowns. This was a very tough time for us all but as we start to come out of that I thought I would take this opportunity to speak about my experiences.

This episode I speak about my current equipment list as a Photographer and dive into whether I think better equipment makes you a better artist! Us creative people (especially photographers/videographer) have a fascination with gear/equipment and normally upgrade as soon as new things come out. In this episode I want to share my thoughts about the role equipment plays on your creativity and how to know when is the right time to upgrade.

How do you charge for something that you would happily do for free? This is the question that I am trying to answer in today's episode. Over the past few years I have been very fortunate to be able to do something that I absolutely love (Photography) as a career. One unexpected hurdle in this career has been pricing my work and understanding how to charge for my artistic services. I think every creative person knows this feeling all to well and it is just one luxury that we have as people who love what we do. In this episode I just want to speak openly about my thoughts and normalise the fact that having doubts about your pricing is okay.

This week I speak about how I am packing up my business in Sydney and moving to Port Macquarie. It will be a big change but I am excited about new things to come. Moving away from Sydney brought back a lot of memories of when I first moved to Sydney almost 6 years ago. Back then I never realised how important your environment was on your own success. If I had never moved to Sydney I don't think I ever would have started on this Creative Journey so in this episode I speak about the importance of your Environment and your Community as it has played out in my life. Enjoy :)

A question I was thinking about this the week that really made me stop and ponder. Role models or heroes were such an important part of my childhood and gave me something to aspire to. As an adult however, I have slowly drifted away from the idea of heroes being important. In this episode I want to touch on the benefits of having role models in your adult life and how we can use them and their successes as inspiration in our own creative journey.

Over the past 9 months it has grown into something which I am very proud of and I now speak about more topics than just my own business. In this episode I speak about where this podcast is headed as we look forward to 2022 and how being clear on my niche can help my audience understand what I am all about. I also touch on aspects of my business and use examples of where niches have really helped me in the past. Hope you all can find this helpful.

This week I was lucky enough to be joined by Harry & Tommy from Bandwagon Australia to chat all about how they started their Business. Bandwagon is a sustainable clothing business committed to making streetwear more ethical and environmentally friendly through the use of organic and recycled materials. These boys have gone through it all over the past couple of years since starting their business and we touch on everything in this episode. From their background in fashion to how they market their business, managing Covid shutdowns and dealing with mental health; nothing was off limits and I want to thank the boys for being so honest about their experiences. Defined on Wikipedia as a psychological pattern in which an individual doubts their skills, talents, or accomplishments and has a persistent internalized fear of being exposed as a "fraud". This is something that hits a lot of creative people hard and stops them from producing work and putting themselves out there to the level that they should be. In this episode I speak about how Imposter Syndrome has and continues to impact my life and give you guys some practical tips for moving past it in your own lives.

Not always an interesting topic, but I hope this episode can provide a lot of value for anyone who has their own small business out there or any creatives out there wanting to turn a hobby into a business. I think it is so important to talk about first off, your own personal finances, but then finances in the business and sorting out how you can how you can deal with some of those taxes towards the end of financial year. It's been something that I've been working on a lot recently so I thought that I would bring some of that knowledge into this episode.

As creatives we often feel the burden of creating for the wrong reasons and never give ourselves a chance to experiment and get back to creating the art we love. We get stuck either working for Clients or Instagram and we never step back to consider what it would be like to create the art we love. So today I am going to talk about how you can break that cycle and give you some tips about how to create content moving forward.

This episode of My Creative Journey is the second part of a two-part episode I started in Episode 25. Emily joins me again and we speak about what to do to reduce stress and fatigue in situations where you may not be able to take a break away. One of the things we discuss is what to do if you only have 30 minutes downtime and how to maximise those micro-breaks in your work days and life. So much interesting stuff came out of just this short episode and I really do hope you guys enjoy it.

In this weeks episode of My Creative Journey I speak all about the importance of taking breaks. As you guys may have realised, I have been on a bit of break lately and if were being honest with ourselves it's probably one of the best things that I have done in quite a long time. So today I thought I would discuss both the importance of breaks and the logistics of how you can actually take breaks without stressing yourself out even more. Plus, to up the stakes a little bit I have decided to bring a guest on to this podcast, my lovely fiancé Emily. Emily has been away with me for the past few weeks and I thought she could add some good points in regards to taking breaks from her professional point of view.

This weeks episode of My Creative Journey I give you guys my thoughts on what it means to only be doing the work that you really want to do. In life, far too many of us are unhappy doing work that we don't particularly enjoy. Well why don't we just create a life that only involves things we absolutely love. Isn't that the dream?? Well in this episode I want to talk about how that's easier said than done and that sometimes doing the things you love involves doing a lot of things you don't.
This is going to be a juicy one! Enjoy :)
If you enjoyed today's episode, I would love it so so much if you could share this episode with a friend or family member who you think would enjoy it too. This weeks episode of My Creative Journey is going to be a little bit different because it is my first ever Q & A episode. I reached out on Instagram and asked you guys to send in questions that I will be answering in this podcast. This is in no way an indication that I've run out of things to talk about, no way, I still have plenty of topics that I still want to cover on this podcast. Rather it is just a chance for me to give back to my loyal audience who turn up here every week and give you a little insight into my life and the behind the scenes of this podcast.
I hope you enjoy :)

In this weeks episode of My Creative Journey, I talk about negative comments and dealing with hate online. Since we were kids, all of us have had to learn how to deal with negative comments and grow thick skins towards people who are mean to us. Most people grow out of their negative ways when they become an adult, but anyone who puts any part of their lives online would know that these people don't go away so easily. They simply just put on a mask and hide behind their online profiles. So how do we in today's digital age, deal with criticism and unsubstantiated hate online? In this episode I want to give you my take on this and hopefully open you up to a new way of thinking about it.
I hope you enjoy :)

In this weeks episode of My Creative Journey, I speak about priorities and knowing what comes next along your journey. This podcast is as much a learning tool for me as it is for you guys and prioritising my work has always been something that I have struggled with. In this episode I want to touch on a few things that I am going to start doing moving forward in order to better prioritise my work.
I hope you enjoy :)

In this weeks episode of My Creative Journey, I speak about fears and the un-rational thoughts that we all have when confronting something new or challenging. I come at this topic with a pretty fresh perspective having just started on my new endeavour into Wedding Photography. I know all too well about the fears that can hold us back and the negative thoughts that sometimes cripple us. Today I want to share with you guys 9 steps that have really helped me to control my fears when starting something new.
I hope you enjoy :)

In this weeks episode of My Creative Journey, I speak about Money. A topic that is pretty taboo in today's society however I can definitely see the tide changing. Money is one of those things that makes the world go round although it never seems to be spoken about openly. People who don't have money want it and people who have money never tell anyone how they got it. On this podcast I want to be as open and transparent as I can with you guys about money and hopefully it can start a conversation about your own personal finances.
Hope you guys enjoy it :)

In this weeks episode of My Creative Journey, I have a chat about manifestation and how I faked being a photographer until I made it. All of us have big goals and dreams but only a small few actually take the steps required to reach their dreams. In this episode, I wanted to show you that it's easier than you think, and with a little bit of time and effort you can really achieve anything.
I also speak about running a Half Marathon last weekend and the mental game of endurance sports that we often overlook. Plus I had my first client meeting last week with the lovely couple who's Wedding I will be Photographing this weekend... If you're interested to hear how that meeting went definitely tune in and give this episode a listen.
Hope you enjoy :)

In this weeks episode of My Creative Journey, I speak about three misconceptions that I used to have about telling my own story. I always thought that in business, nobody really cared about who you are just as long as you can get the job done. Now while that's partly true, it's also true that people like to know who you are before they book you to do a job. Especially in an industry like mine, Photography, where it is a very personal experience that I am trying to provide. So by the end of today's episode I hope you understand the importance of authoring your own story in the most personal way possible!
Hope you guys enjoy it :)

In this weeks episode of My Creative Journey, I want to give you 5 reasons why you should start things before you are ready. Most of us tend to overthink big decisions in life and often live in fear of what could happen rather than just starting and seeing where it can take you. I want to draw on my own experiences of being super afraid to start new things and then show you what it's like on the other side when you finally do start. The short answer, you'll never be ready so what are you waiting for!!!
Hope you guys enjoy it :)

In this weeks episode of My Creative Journey, talk about how I am the least creative person I know! Like literally I am not creative at all, or at least not in the sense that we all think about creativity. I hear a lot of people say that you should play to your strengths which I guess means I should be an engineer or a statistician. But in this episode I want to tell you why I think creativity is a learned skill that you don't have to be born gifted at. All you have to do is start trying!
Hope you guys enjoy it :)

In this weeks episode of My Creative Journey, I talk about the things that hold us back and stop us from starting the things we want to do. Like everybody else out there, I have fears and insecurities. I try not to let them hold me back but occasionally they do stand in my way for a while. I want to take this chance today to address one of the biggest barriers of not only my creative journey but arguably my whole life. This is something that I deal with every single day and that makes even the most simple of tasks super challenging!
*Disclaimer: This episode is not for sympathy and it definitely isn't to make anyone feel bad. Since I started this podcast I knew I wanted to speak about this on Episode 10. If I even got that far. This is just my way of inspiring other people and showing you that if I can do it then you can too.
Hope you guys enjoy it :)

In this weeks episode of My Creative Journey, I talk all about the art of the sale. I am by no means an expert salesperson and so I am going to let you in on a few mistakes that I have made throughout my journey. Being an artist is just as much about being creative as it is about being a good business person and boy haven't I learnt that the hard way. But it isn't all bad. There are a few simple yet effective techniques that you can use to help you get past the anxiety of selling yourself and your art.
I really hope you all can take something away from today's episode and that you guys can use some of my techniques for becoming a better salesperson in your own creative journey. If nothing else I hope it shows you the importance of valuing your own creative work.

In this weeks episode of My Creative Journey, I speak all about the pursuit of busyness. The idea going around at the moment that says you always need to be busy. Some may describe it as hustle culture, but today I am going to give my own spin on it and let you guys know about a few experiences I have had with just being too busy.
Working as a freelancer and setting my own daily tasks, it can sometimes be difficult to discern between what tasks are productive and which are just keeping me busy. If you never take a step back to think about what comes next, you can find yourself down a rabbit hole of just working with no clear business goal in mind. I have fallen into this trap of just being busy quite a few time over the years and in this episode I share some tips that have helped me slow down and be more productive at the same time.
I hope you all can take something away from my struggle with being too busy and maybe take some time to slow down and think about how this everyday struggle may be impacting your own life.

G'Day Everyone! In this weeks episode of My Creative Journey, I give you guys 5 practical tips that I have used in my own life to create long lasting habits. I also go a step further and speak about how incorporating habits into your daily routine can help them be successful and make you more productive long term.
One of the things that I find super tough about being a freelance business owner and working for myself is sticking to a schedule and getting things done on time, so putting habits and routines in place is crucial in succeeding with that. By no means am I an expert in this area however there are certain things that have helped me over the years in my many endeavours and so I thought that I would share a few of them with you today!
I really hope you gained something from this episode whether it be one of the techniques that I spoke about or just a new way of thinking about something you are already doing. If you did find one of these tips particularly helpful, send me a message and let me know, I would love to hear from you!

This week on My Creative Journey, I talk about an epiphany that I had a couple of years ago when I discovered that I could actually make a career out of being Creative. Like most people, I grew up believing that Artists were just these mythical creatures that you only see in movies and that no one actually ever did Art as a career. One thing that I hear so often, is people saying that you can't make a living out of being an Artist and this simply just isn't true. In this episode I dive into all the reasons why I believe that being an Artist is actually a more stable and realistic career than most other childhood dreams, it's just about knowing how to get there.
I hope you all enjoy this episode and I wish you all a safe and happy week :)

In this weeks episode of My Creative Journey, I talk about why it's so important to put your work out there into the world. Part of being an artist and creating anything means that you will have critics, but criticism doesn't always have to be a negative thing. A skill we must all learn is to determine whether feedback is constructive, and if it is, how you can learn from it in order to improve.
I speak from experience in this episode as it's the first episode that I actually told anyone about. In the first 4 weeks of making this podcast I had no listeners because I hadn't yet shared the podcast with the world. This was mostly out of fear and I had adopted the principal that you can't fail if no one else knows that you tried. I'm so glad that I finally shared it this week and I hope you guys enjoy listening!
