Dr. Peter Legeza presented on Digital Variance Angiography (DVA) which significantly reduces the radiation dose during lower extremity diagnostic angiographies without affecting the image quality during the 44th CX Symposium. If you have missed this live session it is a great opportunity to catch up!
In the field of Angiography, practitioners/physicians can make use of Iodinated Contrast Material (ICM) in their procedures, and there are many good reasons to do this, with clear imaging being just one of them.
However, at Kinepict, we are pioneers and advocates for the use of CO2 in place of ICM.
In Below The Knee (BTK) procedures, the network of blood vessels is very clustered and close together, meaning that during the procedure, a temporary strain can be placed on the kidneys. This is not so much of an issue with fully fit patients, but could be potentially fatal for patients from high-risk or vulnerable groups. CO2 reduces this strain in comparison to ICM.
Additionally, Angiography patients are far less likely to suffer from an allergic reaction to CO2 than they are from ICM, making the treatments much safer and much less complicated.
The only issue with the use of CO2 is that in order to keep the image quality as clear as possible, we need to increase radiation - which of course carries risks. However, the Kinepict Medical Imaging Tool (KMIT) is able to use CO2 whilst reducing radiation protocol from 7.5 frames per second (FPS) down to just 1 FPS.

In this podcast, we discuss with Dr. Viktor Óriás two papers that validate the use of new imaging technology to support catheter-aided interventions in patients with iodine allergy or weak kidney function. Viktor, you played an important role in several initial clinical validation studies of the Kinepict DVA technology. One of these is about using CO2 as a contrast agent in x-ray angiography. We know that iodinated contrast agents are quite broadly used. The replacement of the iodinated contrast agents with CO2 is only possible below the diaphragm. A decreased use of the contrast agent would often be desirable in interventions of the carotid or of the blood vessels of the brain. You are the first author of a paper that was published in December 2020 in the European Journal of Radiology Open. The study aims to reduce the amount of the iodinated contrast agent in carotid interventions.
The results we’ve gained in our research have emerged through blind testing, to ensure that medical professionals and esteemed colleagues have been able to independently assess the quality of Kinepict imaging in contrast to standard traditional measures.
We’re proud to contribute to patient and clinician safety and we’re excited to see our projects make a difference to the lives of people around the world.
Today is the first episode of the Kinepict Knowledge Base Podcast with Szabolcs Osváth and Krisztián Szigeti. A new approximately 20 minutes episode will come out every month. Our guests are coming from lots of different aspects of medicine to talk with us about best practices and new innovations in the industry.
If anyone has any questions, thoughts or comments about the things we have discussed in today's podcast be sure to get in touch with us.
DVA2 is a new image processing algorithm in Digital Variance Angiography. It has a special noise filter that eliminates bone artefacts and improves the visualization of small vessels, compared to the original DVA1 and DSA algorithms.
These benefits are especially useful in lower limb procedures under challenging conditions (CO2 angiography, dose management, below-the-knee interventions)
Kinepict helps medics see their patients more clearly while reducing the risks associated with angiography. Kinepict software is a CE marked and FDA approved class IIa clinically validated medical device which fully complies with ISO 13485 standard and can be connected seamlessly to any kind of angiography system.
Our proprietary algorithm enhances the quality of x-ray images. Our software works with existing technologies to create sharper pictures that give clinicians more information to support their diagnoses and treatments.
In addition to the clearer images, Kinepict offers a 70% reduction in radiation dose, as well as a 50% reduction in iodinated contrast agent. This means that Kinepict delivers superior clinical tools while reducing the risks to patients and clinicians alike.
While Kinepict technology is beneficial to general patient populations, our breakthroughs offer particularly compelling benefits to high-risk groups. This includes children, people with kidney function issues, diabetics and obese patients. All patients are at some risk from the damaging effects of radiation, but those groups are more susceptible to the side effects of angiographic procedures – if they are eligible for such procedures at all.
Kinepict has been operating since 2016. Our work has been clinically validated (5000+ patients and 75,000+ images) and published in leading peer-reviewed journals, and our mission is to branch into additional segments to become a global medical imaging company.
