Over the years Barak has built a steady brand as an all rounded public figure. Kenyan singer-songwriter TheOnlyRosa's music is influenced by 90s Pop music. Her melodic style reflects her love for African Soul and R&B. A career in music was always on the horizon for her as she started writing songs at the age of 12 and everybody she met was struck by her vocals and encouraged her to take music as a profession. Her proficiency in languages was an advantage as she could also write songs in Swahili and Chinese. She is also a visual artist and loves painting and drawing just as much as singing.

TheOnlyRosa is today one of Kenya's most distinct urban and pop artists. Her ability to tug her fans' heartstrings with her sweet vocals, witty storytelling and captivating performances has made her a household name. In this interview, we both discover that we share a first name (at least parts of it) and a very similar story on personal identity and how that either gives or takes away your self confidence.

Rosa's discography includes 'Original Copy', 'Waves' EP (2020) and 'ROSA LAND' album (2022).

Akoth Jumadi’s music explores themes of love, healing, spiritual emancipation, political liberation and cultural integration in the arts. She started playing at Maseno University in Kisumu, when a friend gave her a subtle nudge by gifting her a guitar. Under the tutelage of a veteran guitarist, she started her journey as a musician. Over time an urge to explore more forms of musicality, she taught herself bass guitar to express her love for funk and jazz, inspired by Esperanza Spalding and her Luo roots called her to the nyatiti, an 8-stringed Luo lute that is traditionally only played by men. Under the guidance of Ati Sanaa, another female nyatiti player, Jumadi took steps that her grandfather had traced many years (he was a nyatiti player).

In this interview, we dissect Akoth’s first EP ‘Ere Yo’ (2020) and her first full length album ‘Yo Ni Ka’ (2022). Both the records are a collection of Akoth Jumadi’s experiences growing up, learning about herself and reflecting through her environment.

Liboi is a Nairobi-based singer-songwriter who uses her creative ability to express human experience, question humanity and improve the well-being of the deprived in the society. It’s funny because at the start of this interview, I am almost conned on phone and she immmediately picks on the con and tells me, “Put down the phone. You are just about to be conned.” It’s almost her second nature how fast she is able to decipher what’s happening.

Liboi is a strong proponent for social change, culture and mental awareness. In fact, in this interview she talks about her own struggle with mental issues. “It’s normal”, she says. Her music blends traditional and popular African genres, she this she dubs African Contemporary Music. She is also a lover of percussions, and plays Kalimba and Duduk.

Through her music, Liboi has been able to embrace diverse themes from hope, mental health, life, love, patriotism, tribalism, peace, immigration and social ills. She has two EPS: ‘State of Being’ (2022) and ‘Safari’ (2023). Make sure you listen to her music.

Bakhita is a multi-disciplinary Kenyan artist who vividly delves into descriptive sentences aimed at tugging all of your senses and scopes into perspective through a symphony of Urban Jazz, Afro Funk, and Neo Soul. Their tone is husky and bright as they dominate multiple key ranges.

In this interview, Bakhita expounds on how they use their vocals, visual art, set and conceptual design, to create art. Their art is heavily influenced by their introspective nature, concerned about understanding the self, behavior and emotion; synonymously layered with reflective and insightful undertones, interweaving and borrowing from the muse of nature in the Kenyan Climate. Bakhita also creates Afro Surrealist universes that challenge biased and discriminatory systems that affect marginalized communities: African women, LGBTQ+, sexual abuse victims, and mental health victims. Their message of light, rebirth and societal change enchants and inspires various consumers and creatives alike.

Their discography includes Chamo Mile: PYE (2020) and ‘Purge’ (2021). Link to stream Bakhita’s new music https://orcd.co/aftertwo_bakhita

At 19, Angela attended her first audition at the then Phoenix Players, East Africa's most reputable theatre that nurtured a lot of raw talent in those days. Born in Nairobi and hailing from the Nilotic tribes of Kenya, Adelaide singer, rapper, and producer Elsy Wameyo embraces her cultural heritage through her 2022 groundbreaking EP 'Nilotic' and will continue on the journey this year with the release of her LP 'Saint Sinner' - scheduled for release later on in the year. "Sinner" and "Piny Lara" singles have already been released as a lead up to this anticipated project.

Her soulful rhythms and impressive production lay the foundation for energetic and insightful lyrics, which pose questions to current societal boundaries and perceptions.

Self-producing her own work and exploring new production techniques has led Elsy Wameyo to find her own style and control in sonic direction. This approach compliments a fusion of gospel and traditional sacred sounds that shape Elsy’s musical vision, alongside a force of contemporary hip-hop and R&B influences.

Previously, Elsy has shared stages with artists such as Sampa the Great, Genesis Owusu, Ruel and Adrian Eagle. She adds to this with previous festival appearances at Groovin’ The Moo, St Jerome's Laneway Festival, and her hometown Adelaide’s WOMAD. Most recently, Elsy took her 7-piece band to Strawberry Fields, followed by a special VIVID LIVE show alongside Mo’Ju and two special debut appearances at Dark Mofo. She finished her debut tour whilst also touring nationally with the Hilltop Hoods.

Her forthcoming album ‘Saint Sinner’ is a story of redemption, a search for discipline and meaning in a world seemingly devoid of it ...

An opportunity arises to meet Tina Ardor who I have saved on my phone as Christina DJ when she calls me to book an interview on my podcast for DJ Sbu. This would be a few weeks before her collaboration with DJ Sbu “I’ll Be There”- a mesmerizing Deep House drops. It’s only until she comes to the interview is when I realize that Christina the DJ is Tina Ardor. Somehow, she manages to keep it on the low keep despite the fact that the inner workings are making a ripple effect in the industry – all way from Kenya, South Africa and to the world.

I have to have her on the podcast – I tell myself and she’s not an easy one to pin down because she’s assertive, knows what she wants but is shy when it comes to interviews and self-promotion. Glad VIP ACCESS got the access.

Tina Ardor is a singer, songwriter, composer and DJ based in Nairobi, Kenya. Music has always been an integral part of her life since childhood, and performance through song and dance an innate gift. Tina Ardor draws great inspiration in her creativity from the linguistic diversity of cultural groups and Kenya’s 44 tribes. Feeding off the African spirit, Tina Ardor has collaborated with different artists/producers from around the world on various musical works.

She recently teamed up with her siblings MGM Kenya (DJ/Producer) and Gabriel (UI/UX designer) to launch MIGATI Music, a new record label based in Kenya, curated by the sibling trio.

Kasiva integrates African Traditional music with modern styles such as jazz, Hip-Hop, Reggae, funk and more. Her expressive playing can tell a story on its own, or keep a band perfectly in the pocket. The Kenya native co-founded the first all-female percussion collective in Kenya, MOTRAMUSIC (MOdern and TRAditional rhythms). MOTRAMUSIC teaches young women and girls the art of drumming, percussion and understanding rhythm as a whole. Overtime, MOTRAMUSIC has grown from a percussion based project to a sisterhood where the girls have formed lasting friendships and bonds that are another family; all through drumming.

From South to West Africa, I present a special episode featuring South African multidisciplinary DJ, producer and singer Muzi and Nigerian singer-songwriter and hitmaker Wande Coal.

I sat down with Muzi soon after releasing his fifth studio album 'uMUZI' via Fool’s Gold in Oct, and Wande Coal on his 2023 album 'Legend Or No Legend'.

Interestingly, both albums mark a career shift and status for both the artists. While 'uMUZI' is an autobiographical collection detailing Muzi’s universe and how it came to be, 'Legend Or No Legend' redefines Wande Coal's status as one of Africa's hitmakers and pioneers who pushed Afrobeats to the world.

'uMUZI' serves as Muzi's origin story, chronicling the moments that have truly made him who he is. This album sees the “Zulu Skywalker” return to earth, grounded by his memories and the desire to reconnect with his late parents.

Bensoul is a household name when it comes to Kenyan hitmakers, celebrity songwriters and seasoned performers. The soulful and smooth crooner has written songs for and alongside the likes of Sauti Sol, Burna Boy, Kidum, Alikiba, Nyashinski, H_art The Band and Mercy Masika, among many other stars.

It was February 2018 - when we [Sol Generation Records & Anyiko PR] first released "Lucy" - Bensoul's first official solo single and also his debut as the first signee of Sauti Sol's label Sol Generation Records. It was a scary moment - one that we out into everything because we all knew and believed that Bensoul had everything it takes ...

Bensoul has since released a 2020 EP 'Qwarantunes', 2021 EP 'Medicine' and his anticipated debut album 'The Lion Of Sudah' (2023) - which he says has a title that represents his current state of mind and affairs. He's ready to take over and rule his own brand, management and fans. His plethora of hits including "Peddi", "Birthday Song", 'Medicine", "Ntala Nawe", "Thick Thighs", "Favourite Song", "Row" and "Nairobi" - the game-changer.

Bensoul unfortunately lost his mother, soon after we shot this interview. He does talk about how she came through for him in his darkest moment. Our condolences ... it's bitter sweet. In this interview, we talk about his love for music, how we met, through Sauti Sol, more than 5 years to orchestrate what would become a successful music career in Kenya and beyond. Watch as he progressively builds a career as one of Africa's top live acts.

Yaba - also known by many as the Prince of Rhumbacane makes Rhumba music - often referred to as Zilizopendwa (classic tunes) in East Africa. His style of Rhumba is a fusion of Rhumba Trap and Benga genres - always mashing up sounds of the past and future. Yaba's discography includes EPs: 'Rhumbacane' (2021), 'Bestie' (2022) and the latest 'Zitakazopendwa'.

Yaba started out as a member of Red Acapella (now defunct) a successful duo whose hit songs include "Tena na Tena" with H_art The Band, "Kaa Gava", "Ona Sasa" and "Kahawa Ngware Kawangware".

Since going solo, this is Yaba's second interview and also the first since releasing his 2023 EP 'Zitakazwopendwa' (Swahili for Future Classics) which is a play on Zilizopendwa. We are diving deep into his collaborative EP - that expresses Yaba's assertiveness when it comes to making classic music. The record features a host of Kenyan hitmakers including H_art The Band, Bien Aime, Boutross, Savara, Coster Ojwang', Femi One, Mejja, King Kaka and Ayrosh.

Yaba's explanation to his inclination to Rhumba music and the fact that he never really wanted to become an artist until much later in life - is very interesting. Picking up music and his genre of choice, he says, was solely based on curiosity as he never had any major influences apart from Bob Marley.

Thank you Yaba for 'Zitakazwopendwa' and being among Nairobi's best live music performers! Let's run up the numbers! He sums it up, "You can sing this type of music forever without pressure of being on the mainstream as much as everyone wants to be mainstream."

Kenyan rapper Boutross is an outsider in many ways. However, he was always in the game. As a young boy he battled older boys in the hood - eventually taking the crown and prizes as the king kid of freestyles and public speaking. The hitmaker's rise to fame had to do with carving his own path and genre in the game.

He explains why together with his crew (ADH Family) he created SHRAP (Rap, Trap and Popular music delivered in Sheng') - their own music genre that opened a world of no gatekeeping, and a movement without limits. This is perhaps the reason why he is very passionate in mentoring younger artists, especially those considered to be outsiders. ADH Family is now a label working to raise and build other acts.

Boutross's discography includes: '6ixviewsii8k' (2020), 'Kabla Mtindo' (2022) and 'Mawingu' (2022). In this interview, Boutross reveals that the song that changed his life was accidentally made. With the remix of his biggest hit "Angela" in place and a new album on the way, Boutross is looking at new horizons as he enters a new territory within the global music realm.

I am still in South Africa and today meeting with Afro-Folk soulful singer and performer Bongeziwe Mabandla who is into making experimental music and fusing multiple genres. Bongeziwe's string of success includes four acclaimed albums and groundbreaking live music performances in his country South Africa and on various international stages and festivals.

His early musical influences stem back to his childhood in the rural town of Tsolo in the Eastern Cape where he grew up singing in church, at school and at home. He moved to Johannesburg to study drama at AFDA but later found himself in music instead of film. In 2022 however Bongeziwe joined the set of a film being shot in Kinshasa by musician and filmmaker BALOJI.

I meet Muneyi - a multifaceted artist, songwriter, composer and guitarist in South Africa in the comfort of my friend Jess White's house. It's a perfect spot to hear Muneyi's poetic words and comforting tales about his Makhulu (grandmother). His 2021 debut album 'Makhuku' is about lessons in love, loss and healing inspired by the life and perspective of his grandmother.

He asserts that language preservation is an important part of his work and artistry. This, and the fact that he wanted to write songs for his grandmother who only spoke Venda, led him to fully delve into fusing modern sounds and Tshivenda folktales in his writing and storytelling through song. Venda is a Bantu language spoken by Venda people from the northern part of South Africa, and Zimbabwe.

Muneyi's music has been described as a healing experience as he connects listeners to his own narrative while giving them a chance to find their own meaning and interpretation in his music that has also been described as a gift from the gods.

We are breaking down the album 'Makhulu' - an ode to his grandmother which ended up resonating with a broad audience, and surpassing language barrier. Before we wrap up, Muneyi is sharing his wish on how South Africa music industry can improve and tips to incorporating traditional languages in commercial songs.

In the final eps of this season I am taking you to Uganda, and sharing some of my most cherished interviews (recorded between 2016 - 2019). I had the honour of meeting and interviewing Radio & Weasel. Unfortunately after that, Radio passed away. I later caught up with his partner Weasel alongside King Saha - who speak on his passing and how that changed Uganda's entertainment industry. On the other end, I caught up with two of Uganda's best in their genres: The Mith and Bennie Gunter - and they both speak highly about their passion for music and making authentic music that represents Uganda. Kenyan singer and music producer Mutoriah is one of the most talented and charming people I've ever met. At 26, the multi-talented artist who also works as a sound engineer and music director has had a hand in major hit records for major Kenyan acts like Sauti Sol, Wanavokali and Bensoul. He was also a guest producer at Coke Studio Africa 2019.

Mutoriah is hands down among Kenya and Africa’s most promising music talent and one to watch. He’s a stellar performer, an extraordinary music producer and music director with a very keen ear and skill for sound. For an artist whose mission was to only become an instrumentalist, Mutoriah’s music and career journey is inspiring. In this interview, we look at his journey so far while namedropping some of his biggest productions.

He also gives advice on how best to chase your dreams. Mutoriah has so far released two music projects: Dive In Album (2019) and Happiness EP (2022) and is currently working on releasing more collaborative EPs.

Fast-rising Kenyan R&B Queen Pryshon joined the music scene professionally in 2016 starting out as a voice artist for songs written for other singers. It then took her a while to settle into her own craft and songwriting, with the help of key industry individuals. She has since defied all odds to take centre stage. Her music is now a hybrid of Pop, R&B and Gengetone – representing various Kenyan music influences while showcasing her diversity; while her songwriting tackles themes around love, relationships and being street smart.

Her discography includes ‘Feelings EP’ (2020), ‘Gifted’ album (2021) and Christmas Light EP (2022). In this interview we recall her journey from an unknown songwriter - to taking the spotlight and getting into her own lane. Pryshon also own Shon Beauty makeup brand. Meryl Paige is one of Kenya's most unique power vocalists. Her music is a unique blend of Afro soul, R&B and gospel influences that showcase her exceptional vocal range and heartfelt songwriting skills. Her dedication to her craft is evident in her powerful lyrics and captivating performances, which have earned her a devoted fanbase and critical acclaim.

From the very start of her career, Meryl had her eyes on live music performance as a business, so she founded her own gig and grew her own career from that. She's grown into a mentor for upcoming artists and songwriters as she continues to provide platforms for musicians to thrive and shine. She is passionate about creating safe spaces for women and performing artists.

In 2020 she was part of Waithaka's all-female Kenyan album 'Ode by Queens' - a project she's very passionate about. She describes her debut album 'SuperEgo' (2020) as an expression of work that depicts the daily struggle an artist keeping up with society’s expectations as much as their own. Her second album 'Dedicated' (2023) is "deeply personal" - drawing inspiration from her own life experiences and struggles.

In this interview, Meryl looks back at her personal journey to discovering her talent while reflecting on how she continues to hone her relationship with music. From singing like a jukebox to her high school peers; to wooing her audiences with her big personality and sultry voice; Meryl continues to use music as powerful tool for change and therapy.

Kenyan rapper, singer, and songwriter Groovy Jo is edgy, with assertive lyrics which often freely express the image of an unapologetic Black woman, while encouraging other women to be bold and themselves. I love how early in her career she has found this direction and assertiveness.

In this podcast, Groovy Jo recalls starting off rap at 11 years old and professionally in 2018 - through vigorous freestyles that were undeniable; leading key figures in Kenya's new school hiphop industry like Musau of AD Family, Asum Garvey and Khaligraph Jones to notice her. It wasn't long after that and she dropped her debut mixtape 'The Groovy Way' (2021), which was closely followed by 2022 records: 'The Groovy Way' Deluxe Edition and 'Shrappin' Rage' - collaborative album with Asum Garvey.

She talks about collaborating with her producer Lemario; Boutross and Kay Green; while crediting the likes of Nicki Minaj, Nonini, Nazizi, E-Sir, Stella Mwangi, Tupac and her older sister Metabel for the nudge and inspiration.

Known for her word play and a sound that mashes up various genres including Trap, Hip Hop, Drill, Afrobeats, Ragga and Afropop; Groovy writes raps and songs to uplift and encourage more women to take up space and display their power - positively and wisely. She also has a response for those claiming that Kenya's entertainment industry has no relevant female rappers. Listen.

However, the deal left her with a lot of valuable industry lessons that she shares for the first time on this podcast. In the same year, she won the Best Female Artist East Africa at All Africa Music Awards (Afrima) Awards - something that left her overwhelmed and more aware of the support she needs for her career's next steps.

Having had a successful debut album and winning accolades is not enough for Muthaka. She is working towards being more independent by creating spaces that supporting women, and is quick to point out industry challenges like low pay, cartels in the live music performance spaces and sexism being major hurdles. We are connecting with Ugandan rapper - Flex D' Paper aka the Kampala Boy and the Fresh Prince Of Kla City on the podcast this week! Flex started out in the industry as early as 2012 but it was only until 2015 when he started gaining attention in the industry when he first featured on UG HipHop Cyphers. In 2016 he got named by MTV Base among the top Mcs from Uganda on the #BaseTopMCs Uganda list. From there onwards, there was no stopping Flex, who has released or been part of a plethora of Ugandan hit singles and street bangers.

It was until 2017, that the hip hop artist and producer released his first solo mixtape 'Not For Sale'. His first album, 'The Kampala Boy' dropped in 2021, and even though it was seen as a response to his fans who had been demanding for an album for more than a decade; Flex says that it was just the right time. For him, it's always been more important to work on a holistic discography that represent his city and country, more than just any other album for promo. "Kampala Boy" has however raised standards and changed the industry's perception towards Flex. Identity is everything when it comes to his personal branding. He says, "I want people to know who I am, where I come from and where I represent."

Here's a proper introduction to Kenya's most unique vocalists and songwriters; genius singer and artist Brian Nadra - is the coolest of the Decimators; If I do so say myself. Before meeting and being produced by legendary Kenyan music producer and label boss Musyoka, Nadra had recorded over 30 songs that never saw the light of day because they never cut the quality he was looking for. The Nyeri-born artist started out as a rapper and an artist writing exclusively in English. His earliest music heroes include his grandfather (who used to own a lyric book), Chris Brown, Bruno Mars and Brenda Fassie. He is first to reiterate that music and life is all about learning and growing. This approach has consequently led him into writing and singing more in Swahili and Kikuyu. He says, "Language is a big part of how I look at music and what you could do with it. There are melodies and lyrics that can only be used in specific ways depending on the language."In this interview with Anyiko, Nadra shares his other passion: love for farming and conservation and how that relates to his music. He also explains how the work ethic and family he found at Decimal Records has changed him.

Xenia Manasseh is captivating to say the least. Her style, love for dance, vocal tone and the clarity and pureness of her lyrics is distinct. The Kenyan singer-songwriter has released two successful EPs: Fallin’ Apart (2019) and Maybe (2022) that have brought different dimensions to the industry’s texture of R&B, Soul, Alte' Music and Pop music. From not considering herself a writer or artist, Xenia has grown into a contented artist and a writer to the stars; and that’s just her beginning. While at the verge of releasing her debut album, Xenia sits down with Anyiko to recall her journey to self-discovery that started at Berklee Music College.

She has collaborated with big names in the game including Sauti Sol, Mr Eazi, Ukweli and Idahams. Not every artist approaches collaborations like Xenia does, "It's fun" - she says. Thriving at being comfortable and experimental in her artistry has brought her so many great opportunities like songwriting camps, where she also got to write for Tems' upcoming project. She is currently signed to Soul HQ, and as a songwriter to Atlanta based label UCMG, through where she got songwriting credits on Teyana Taylor’s 'The Album' for the songs “Wrong B*tch” in which she also did background vocals and “Shoot It Up” ft Big Sean.

My dream to work in this industry was certainly influenced by the success and life of African stars like M'bilia Bel, Brenda Fassie, 2Baba and P Square, among many others. Meeting and working with Rudeboy (King Rudy) formerly of P Square is something I never even imagined. I only remember seeing them in the best concert ever in Nairobi at KICC about 10 years ago and thinking to myself - one day I wanna meet these guys or superstars this big and so well organised. On stage, they were so coordinated: from choreography, the outfits to the vocal arrangements. It was exactly how I knew this thing should be done. Even though P Square aren't one any more, their stamp of authority and the undeniable path they paved for many will forever be remembered. It was such an honour for me to talk to this legend on the next big plans for him as a solo artist. Thank you so much Coke Studio Africa for the opportunity you've given me to work with Rudeboy among other mega stars. I loved it!

In this in-depth and super honest sit down, he explains to me why it looks from outside that he's underrated while from his perspective it is most Ugandans that don't understand his style and swag, and in retrospect then fail to appreciate his genius.
