The Pittsburgh CLO is making some adjustments to get people back to the theater this summer. CLO Executive Producer Mark Fleischer tells Rick Dayton that since the pandemic, attendance at CLO shows is down 20 percent. That's why they are introducing three measures to get people back to the Cultural District this summer. It includes $10 trolley rides, $10 tickets for kids and a way to get responsible child care while you attend the events.
There is no evidence acetaminophen use during pregnancy increases the risk of autism, ADHD, or intellectual disability in children. Dr. Grace Ferguson, MD is an OB/GYN at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh. She joined the Rick Dayton Show to discuss findings from analysis on 2.4 million children born in Sweden. Ferguson says the fact that many of these children are siblings is significant -- as siblings share genetics and upbringing. Mike Spagnola is the President and CEO of the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA), a group of 7,000 member companies that provide aftermarket solutions for the automotive industry. Where do you begin? How do we fix Congress? That is the premise of a new book from Michael Johnson and Jerry Climer, men who spent decades working in the Congressional orbit. Jacobs says 282,000 people in Pennsylvania are dealing with the disease, and nearly twice as many are working as non-professional caregivers for those patients.

University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine scientists identified drug candidates that show promise to reverse the ability of HIV to escape detection by the immune system. The discovery was described today in Cell Chemical Biology. It reveals a potential path to eliminate the viral reservoir that cannot be cleared with existing antiretroviral drugs. This reservoir is what prevents people from being completely cured of HIV even when their viral load is undetectable in standard tests. As Dr. Lori Emery-Selak tells Rick Dayton, this potential treatment can potentially allow drug treatments to not simply maintain a patient with HIV, but perhaps destroy the virus in the patient.

At 25, Benny Schwartz was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease called NeuroMyelitis Optica, something only 4,000 to 8,000 people have in the United States. That caused Benny to lose his vision. Now at 35, he is legally blind, but he has turned to art as a way to deal with his blindness, mental health and emotional wellbeing. The Pittsburgh-based artists works under the name Benny Blindspots. He just had 50 pieces of his art included in a collection that is being displayed at Bank of America locations across the county.
Lindsay Olyha says she got involved with drugs and alcohol when she was 12 or 14. By the time she was a sophomore at North Allegheny High School, she got kicked out of school. By the time she was in her early 20's the self-described "troubled youth" had three DUI's and a criminal record -- and the stigma that came along with it. Now, the owner of Scrubd Esthetics and Certified Licensed Nurse Practitioner is going to be the keynote speaker for 300 at North Allegheny HS at a leadership conference for girls. UPMC's Dr. Raagani Jawa is a clinician and researcher at the University of Pittsburgh. She is trained in addiction medicine and infectious disease. She also is an expert in the area of harm reduction -- and that is part of the reason why she will be participating in a two day public workshop next week to inform the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy on harm reduction research. Duquesne University raised the curtain on its brand new College of Medicine this morning. The first class of physicians will report to Pittsburgh this summer to start four years of medical school at Duquesne. Eighty-five students, many from Pennsylvania have been selected from more than 4,000 applicants. Gormley says the addition of a medical school is the largest investment for the University since it launched the Law School in 1911.
Seed & Harvest Ministries in North Versailles is looking for gently used clothes to help the homeless population of Pittsburgh. There is a new attraction in the Strip District. The Heinz History Center unveiled the 35 foot tall Heinz Ketchup bottle that used to be part of Heinz Field, home of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Now it can be seen at 12th and Smallman Streets in downtown. Andy Masich, president and CEO of the Heinz History Center, says the bottle is now very close to one of the goalposts from Three Rivers Stadium. The bottle was used for 21 years, pouring its contents down the scoreboard when the Steelers entered the red zone.

An Orange County school in Florida took away students' phones for the school day. Students are a lot more engaged in discussions without their phones. One school is seeing great results without phones at students' disposal. Could we see this more often? What is the downside of not having phones? Students can pay more attention and possibly learn more because they are focused. We heard from callers on what should happen with students and their phones in school. One exception is for medical conditions and keeping them in their backpack. A caller thinks taking phones away from students at school will help them socialize and have a better experience in class.

New research from the American Cancer Society says sticking to your scheduled mammograms can significantly reduce your risk of death from breast cancer. Moreover, women who got all the scheduled mammograms had a 66% to 72% reduced risk of breast cancer death. She and a team of researchers at Pitt have received money to develop a tick repellent. Child care centers are not spreading COVID-19 at significant rates to caregivers or other children at the center. That is part of the findings of Dr. Timothy Shope, MD, MPH, a professor of pediatrics at the Pitt School of Medicine and a pediatrician at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. The findings from Dr. Shope's team of researchers were published today in JAMA Network Open. Among other things, they found rates of transmission of COVID-19 are much higher at home (50% among children) than they are at child care centers (at only 2% to 3%.)

He is a professor at the Pitt School of Medicine and is co-principal investigator of a new clinical trial that tackles the leading cause of death in children: traumatic bleeding. The study is funded through a branch of the Department of Health and Human Services and has a budget of $34 million for the first five years. That budget could expand to $81 million over ten years. A drug created here in Pittsburgh at Duquesne has received a Rare Pediatric Disease designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. That allows the promising pediatric cancer drug to move into human clinical trials and qualify for additional funding. The drug has shown great promise in treating a highly aggressive brain tumor called DIPG found in children who are 5 to 9 years old. Most children diagnosed with DIPG live less than two years. Robert Bowers, the suspect in the Pittsburgh Synagogue shooting must undergo psychiatric evaluations. That was the opinion of U.S. District Judge Robert Colville. Paula Reed Ward is covering the Bowers trial for the Tribune-Review. She tells Rick Dayton the judge was very specific in his instructions to the prosecution and defense as to what his expectations are for the evaluations, how long they should take and made it clear they are not to interfere with the timeline for the next phase for the trial.

Norfolk Southern CEO Alan Shaw tells Rick Dayton the company has already spent $31 million on the clean-up effort in East Palestine. They announced to investors in a recent earnings call they are setting aside $385 million more to rectify the derailment in eastern Ohio. Shaw said the company will do whatever it takes to help the community. Three long-term funds have been established to address these issues. It was about a young man growing up in Manchester England in the 1950's -- and trying to find his place in the world in a low-income Jewish family. As part of his journey, Oliver Walzer finds the game of ping pong and becomes very capable and eventually competes at a very high level. While the ping pong portion of the story was fascinating, I struggled to understand the meaning of many Yiddish words and the other portions of the narrative. I fear I often missed the intended/intentional comedy. While the ending of the book was brilliant and thought-provoking, I have to admit I struggled to fight through the final quarter of Jacobson's book.
