Arif K. Rafiq works for a company called ESRI. It's a Canadian outfit that believes geography is critical to decision-making. Arif is an expert in the digital systems that manage roads, highways, and public transit infrastructure, things that (unfortunately) often do not talk to each other. But what if they did? We packed everything up and headed to the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto to check out Project Arrow, a proof-of-concept plan to showcase all the amazing tech available from Canadian manufacturers when it comes to the cars of the future. If you've been doing any travel through airports over the last six months, you've probably noticed an increase in the number of vending machines. Not the kind that dispense cold drinks or chocolate bars, but everything from over-the-counter medicines to expensive electronics. But instead of panicking, you head to a location with a certain type of vending machine. You pick up what you need, head home, finish the project, and you're a hero. Or how about this: You order something online and instead of waiting for it to show up on your doorstep during business hours (where it could get stolen), you go to an automated pickup locker. After earning a BS in Aviation Management from Oklahoma State University, he began his career at Kansas City International Airport as a property manager. His experience includes capital program budget management for construction of Terminal 1 at JFK and International Terminal Building at SFO as a consultant at Av Air Pros, five years as an Airport Planner and Technology consultant and a decade working for Alaska Airlines in Seattle as a Corporate Real Estate/Airport Affairs Manager.
More recently, Mookie was the Senior Vice President for Airline and Commercial Affairs at Denver International Airport and was key in attaining stakeholder support for the 39 gate, expansion project and administering the opening of the new Westin Hotel. He also provided staff augmentation services to Alaska Airlines during the Alaska/Virgin merger on real estate transaction matters.
Mookie was hired in October 2017 as the Chief Aviation Administration Officer for the City of San Antonio Aviation Department. His responsibilities included fiscal administration, technology, properties, concessions, procurement, and the Small/Minority-Owned Business office.
Mookie joined Austin-Bergstrom International Airport as the Airport Chief Revenue and Finance Officer in summer 2020. Since joining, he has taken on similar responsibilities, including oversight of the City’s finance and properties functions. He is a passionate leader and always looking for ways to connect with his LinkedIn followers.
