An ICA is a comprehensive picture of the perfect customer that includes their age, occupation, problems, wants, and how they make purchases. It is essential for reaching and connecting with the target audience effectively. The ICA should represent the ideal customer, not necessarily the business owner.

Language is always changing and evolving. Many things that were "okay" to say when we were young are now problematic, and there are likely things we're saying now that should be updated.
So, how can we be sure that we're being respectful and avoiding stereotypes with our messaging - and what happens when we make a mistake?
(I said "when" because we're all bound to mess up at some point - let's prepare in advance!)

It is no secret that our world seems to hit us with tragedy at every turn. Like an unstoppable freight train careening uninvited into our lives.
Since the topic is unavoidable, the question becomes, as a marketer, how do you go about responding to tragedies? Or do you?
There are typically two ways to react when a national tragedy occurs:
You either,
Or,
A cookie-cutter response does not exist when it comes to deciding the best way to respond when a national tragedy presents itself. It is the goal of this episode to give you a few options and perspectives, including my own, to help guide you in creating a plan to respond that validates who you are best fits your business.

So many people say they hate marketing, but they don’t. Not really. They think they do and the reason is simple; a lot of marketing that they have seen is full of psychological manipulation and gross sales tactics.
Sure, the old way of marketing may work, don’t get me wrong. But it’s far from perfect, and we should be intentional about the strategies we're implimenting so that we can show respect to our audience and make money in a way that's both aligned with our values and more profitable ... tune in to learn more!

And at the same time, it's important to remember that not everyone’s experience is the same. We must recognize that communities are not monolithic.

Your choice of words has the power to exclude, welcome, offend, or lift up. The way you speak to people can be the most impactful of all. You have the choice to disrupt or support systems of oppression with your marketing language.
As someone running a business as a force for good, your marketing language is an essential consideration. Over the last 15 years, 92% of population growth in the United States came from communities of color. These underrepresented groups are looking to see themselves and their worldviews in your branding.
With this rapidly growing population, we’re seeing three out of four Gen Z consumers say they are willing to boycott businesses that discriminate against marginalized populations. It’s more important than ever to use inclusive language ... tune in to learn more!

When it comes to creating online content, the need to be creative and stand out is pretty obvious.
I mean, if you’re putting all the effort into creating content, of course, you want it to stand out enough that people will actually consume it. And it can be tempting to hop on the bandwagon of every new trend online as they’re picking up steam with the hopes and dreams of more followers and likes looming in front of you.
However, as a Just Marketer who actively seeks to be as accessible and inclusive as possible, we play by some different rules than many content creators online.
Sometimes we have to pass on the trends ... tune in to learn more ...

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed in1990 to ensure Americans with disabilities have accommodations in physical spaces. However, how it translates into the online space is still a bit up in the air. Afterall, in 1990 we never could have imagined how technology would change over the next 20+ years.
While there is no formal law mandating websites be made accessible, nor what that should look like, as Just Marketers, we understand that ensuring our content is accessible is simply the right thing to do!
I suspect there may be regulations coming over the next few years, and when that happens I know we’ll be ahead of the game because we’re making these considerations now.
If you’re wondering how to tackle this aspect of Just Marketing, tune in to this episode for helpful resources and best practices.

There is a frustrating lack of diversity in marketing.
While the trend is shifting slightly, it’s a change that is way overdue, and there is still progress to be made.
There is a whole world of difference in the people around us, and if you want to be truly inclusive in your marketing, it’s time to start thinking about the diversity of your existing audience, and who you want to be in your audience - and ensure that same diversity is reflected in the images you use to promote your business.

According to a 2019 study from Verizon Media and Publicis Media, 69% of people watch videos without sound in public places.
Another research by Facebook also found that 85% of its users watch or begin watching videos with the sound off.
Different people have unique learning styles — and different ways that they prefer to consume content. The 3 primary ways people consume content these days are via video, audio, and/or text. Certain people also require assistive technology to be able to consume content mostly for 2 reasons:
These are some of the reasons why subtitles, captions, and transcriptions are essential to your content marketing as a just marketer. You'll find out how to use these tools in this episode.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), roughly 350 million people across the globe are visually impaired.
One in 12 men (including my step-dad) are color blind. The number is one in 200 for women.
Marketing for everyone has to be just that…for EVERYONE.
So, if you consider yourself a just marketer, which means that all of your marketing is produced through an ethical, equitable and accessible lens, it only makes sense to keep this huge portion of the population in mind.
Color-blind folks aside, grayscale is also a preferable option for people who want to reduce stress on their eyes while browsing online.
For those who fall within the color blind population, or just those who are interested in taking advantage of that grayscale option, using proper color contrast is like a breath of fresh air.
The right color contrast makes your content readable.
The wrong color contrast, on the other hand, makes your content relatively inaccessible depending on who is reading it.
Tune in to learn more about how you can be sure you're applying the proper color contrast in your marketing.

If you want to market your product ethically, you must eliminate performative behavior.
Performative behavior is an insincere action taken only to elicit a response or reaction from a specific audience ... When you want it to look like you’re an activist, so you can fit in, sell more products, or appeal to a wider net of potential clients…but you don’t put real effort into reform.
You’re trying to benefit off the struggles of others.
This episode explores:
Identifying How You May Be Using Performative Marketing
7 Ways to Eliminate Performative Marketing

Social media breeds bullies and trolls.
People who seem to enjoy being mean and stirring up drama.
People who are often able to hide behind the anonymity of their keyboards and the internet.
People who face no accountability for the things that they say.
People who are more rude and crass than I expect they would be if you encountered them in real life.
People who are proudly and/or ignorantly racist and bigoted.
…you get the gist.
It’s a harsh reality that as marketers we have to prepare ourselves for trolls, and especially as Just Marketers - because someone always wants to hate on anything that’s progressive. SMH. But we’re going to keep moving forward regardless of these keyboard warriors.

Nobody is perfect.
Your company is bound to mess up sometimes, and that’s okay.
Your Just Marketing™ journey is dependent on your reaction to the situation, not on the situation never happening in the first place. Your reaction determines the reputation you hold.
It also depends on the relationship between the intent and the impact of your actions.
Sometimes, good intentions can have a negative impact.
There can be cases where you KNOW that you didn’t mean to be racist, anti-LGBTQIA+, or inaccessible. Your intentions were good, but at the end of the day, someone was hurt by your actions.
You can’t always control when this happens, but you can learn to anticipate it, react to it in a courteous, understanding way, and adjust your actions moving forward accordingly.
Tune in to learn how to respectfully react in these situations.

If you want to run a sustainable business in today’s market, you must implement a Just Marketing™ strategy.
There’s also the fact that it’s just a good, human-centered approach to business (and life!).
This inaugural episode introduces the concept of Just Marketing™ and breaks down why inclusivity and accessibility matter in marketing.
We explore the advantages of a Just Marketing™ approach, and some quick and easy ways to get started - whether this is a brand new concept for you, or not.
While marketing through a DEI (diversity, equity & inclusion) lens can seem rather layered and nuanced to many. The easy thing is to keep doing business as usual but if we want to change the world, we need to shake things up because the status quo is not equitable. Just Marketing™ exists as a resource to help you along this journey of making marketing more inclusive and accessible - even when it feels hard.
