thinkDecade joins Miss Purple on this episode to explore the case for L2s in Africa. In The Great Promise episode, a case was made about how crypto is a technology that promises financial inclusion and economic participation in a manner and scale never before seen for the everyday African. Unfortunately, this promise is threatened with challenges like transaction fees on L1 blockchains like Ethereum and Bitcoin. This episode continues the conversation by presenting how L2s such as Optimism are helping bring the Great Promise back on track.
The episode also briefly touches on Optimism's vast ecosystem and how it offers opportunities in the form of retroactive public good funding and ecosystem grants to people who provide value and build in the Op ecosystem. This means that if you are a developer who is building on Optimism, you can apply for grants to help fund your project. Additionally, if you are providing value to the Optimism ecosystem in some other way, such as by writing blog posts or tutorials, you can also apply for retroactive public good funding. This is a great way to support the development of the Optimism ecosystem and to get rewarded for your contributions.
The Optimism ecosystem is currently undergoing a great deal of experimentation with its governance and superchain thesis. We strongly advise you to keep an eye on this ecosystem.

thinkDecade and Abidemi bring you an interesting episode today "The Great Promise: Crypto & Africa". In this episode, we delve into the vast landscapes of Africa to explore a revolution that's unfolding—one powered by the disruptive technology of cryptocurrency. We uncover how this emerging force defies borders, challenges conventions, and carries the great promise of rewriting Africa's narrative within it. The transformative power of cryptocurrency is poised to transcend barriers, reshape economies, and unlock the continent's boundless potential.
We take a step back in time to understand the historical context of financial exclusion in Africa and the role of the fiat system in perpetuating economic disparity. We explore the challenges presented by fiat money, such as inflation, devaluation, and manipulation, and discuss how they've impeded the continent's progress.
Next, we delve into the promise of crypto for Africa, touching upon three key themes. First, we discuss the idea of "Fix the Money, Fix Africa", elaborating on Bitcoin's transformative power as hard, sound money, and how it offers a solution to the negative impacts of inflation and manipulation of fiat money. Second, we examine "An Internet of Boundless Value", introducing the concept and potential of Web3 and Ethereum. We look at the development of decentralized applications (dApps) and their real-world implications for Africa.
However, it's not all smooth sailing. We highlight the challenges posed by scalability issues and high transaction fees, the contradiction between the promise of crypto, and the reality of high transaction costs.
Thank you for tuning in.

In this episode of Bankless Africa, CEO, and Chief Blockchain Officer at Caizcoin, Philippe Theunissen, discusses Caiz's mission of creating an ethical financial ecosystem that provides users with Islamic-compliant financial products to empower them to create a better financial future. Theunissen explains how blockchain technology can help people interact with each other in a fairer and more equal way, and how it can bring about positive change in society.
The conversation focuses on Islamic finance and its compatibility with capitalism, and Theunissen explains the core principles of Islamic finance. These include prohibiting interest, requiring equity participation, and striving for fair and just transactions. Theunissen argues that capitalism should focus on creating long-term benefits for society, rather than the current short-term profit-maximizing system. Following the principles of Islamic finance can lead to real capitalism and a more beneficial system for everyone.
Theunissen also discusses Caiz’s alignment with Islamic finance principles, specifically through their Caiz jāʾiz system, which balances ethical finance by ensuring that every transaction does not involve any interest. This system ensures that both parties interests are aligned, and the lender receives a share of the business rather than interest. This approach helps to manage risk while promoting long-term benefits for both parties.
Overall, the conversation highlights the importance of creating sustainable financial ecosystems that prioritize fairness and long-term benefits for all involved. The principles of Islamic finance, combined with innovative blockchain technology, offer a potential path toward achieving this goal.

The Africa Web3 summit was hosted by Web3 Accra in Ghana on the 23rd of February. This was the place for creators, innovators and enthusiasts in Ghana to connect, ideate and question the very reasons we are in the frontier, and what it could all mean for the African continent. There were a myriad of panels held to this effect, addressing topics on web3, crypto and the concept of Network States; we managed to get some of these panels on recording and have been sharing them with you all from last week, after all, our aim is to inform & educate without gatekeeping.
This next session took on a different format, instead of a panel, we had the pleasure of witnessing Bankless Africa contributor Yoofi Annan host a fireside chat with the Cassava Network co-founder and Adaverse Accelerator Investment Manager Mouloukou Sanoh. The chat covered both the Cassava Network and Adaverse, as well as certain dynamics around the industry that necessitate certain innovations in order to provide a sustainable building block for African creators. It is indeed a great time to be alive, there is so much innovation to be had, and so many capable builders.

Strap in as we take you on an interesting conversation featuring Joseph Ayele, co-founder of Global Citizen & EHFNewZealand.
In this episode, we discuss the intersection of web3 and Africa's economic self-determination, with a focus on the potential for decentralization to address the unique challenges and opportunities facing the continent.
Yoseph Ayele led a month-long learning trip to Kenya, Ethiopia, Ghana, and Zambia with a group of prominent figures in the web3 space, including Vitalik Buterin, Aya Miyagotchi, and others.
Throughout their travels, they participated in a wide range of events, meetings, and roundtables, connecting with hundreds of founders, developers, artists, students, DAOists, and community builders. They found that while it is still early days for crypto and web3 adoption in Africa, the pain points that these technologies can solve are immense.
Three key areas where decentralization can make a significant impact include:
Trust intermediaries: In areas where trust intermediaries are weak or non-existent, transaction costs skyrocket.
Simple finance: Communities in Africa are building the basic financial rails for local economies to thrive, including saving, lending, borrowing, insurance, payments, billing, and more. Simple DeFi is better than complex DeFi, as it allows for financial inclusion and addresses major gaps in the current system.
Access to credit: Access to credit for retail and small businesses is an immense gap in Africa, with lenders charging exorbitant interest rates. More attention needs to be paid to this issue, and more brains need to work on it.
In addition to these areas, there are many other projects underway that seek to leverage the unique strengths and challenges of the African context, including the expression of African culture and creativity with NFTs, building incentives for reforestation and climate action, and even the creation of a new digital nation-state.
For Africans to build a borderless economy on-chain, decentralization needs to be affordable and scalable. The Ethereum mainnet has been largely inaccessible, but layer 2s have the potential to change that. However, the Ethereum community has been largely absent in Africa, with antiquated visa requirements preventing Africans from attending global events. To build strong foundations for web3 in Africa, we need more global events on the continent and more investment in local talent and education.
Ultimately, it is Africans who will build the decentralized applications for the 1.4 billion population, and the problems they solve and the variables they optimize for differ greatly from those in the West and Asia. A lot of bottom-up building is happening across Africa, and decentralization offers a real value proposition. We salute all the African builders, educators, community and events organizers, translators, and those educating policymakers who are building the paths for others to walk on.

The panellists for this conversation included Artshelp Co-Founder & Chief Operating Officer Adiam Gafoo, Clokkemaker & Matter Labs (formerly Ape in Records) Co-founder Jake Murphy, Bitsika founder Atsu Davoh and the Head of Communications at Zilliqa Alexander Aspeirs. Alex was also an integral part of the summit’s second day program, the eSports day, which saw young African gamers being introduced to Zilliqa’s ecosystem and competed in various fun tournaments.

The Africa Web3 summit was hosted by Web3 Accra in Ghana this past week on the 23rd of February. This was the place for creators, innovators and enthusiasts in Ghana to connect, ideate and question the very reasons we are in the frontier, and what it could all mean for the African continent. There were a myriad of panels held to this effect, addressing topics on web3, crypto and the concept of Network States; we managed to get some of these panels on recording and will share them with you throughout this week.
This first panel was aptly titled the ’Society on Chain’ panel; it was moderated by cointelegraph’s Elisha Owusu, with panellists Damien Duchamp, a web3 enthusiast and university professor in the tourism sector, Ayoola John, the product lead for the coinbase NFT wallet, Bankless Africa's very own ThinkDecade as well as Fatima Tambajang, who attended the summit in her individual capacity but also works with Nvidia Africa. The panellists shared their opinions, discussed some ideas and hopefully spark an intentional curiosity in many of us who listen.
The Bankless Africa show highlights projects, ecosystems, and people making an impact and driving crypto adoption across Africa. Get informed on all things bitcoin, Defi, NFTs, web3, and everything in-between.

The emergence of decentralized finance (DeFi) has opened up new possibilities for transforming the global economy and making it more accessible to everyone. With its decentralized and open nature, DeFi has the potential to create a financial system that is fair, transparent, and inclusive.
However, despite the promises of DeFi, the crypto space today is often characterized by speculation and "money games" that obscure the true potential of this technology. In order to truly realize the potential of DeFi, we need to bring the global economy on-chain and build an ecosystem that is open, interoperable, and accessible to everyone.
In this episode, we delve into the workings of Goldfinch and the benefits of using decentralized credit platforms in emerging markets. We discuss how Goldfinch is leveraging the power of blockchain technology to build a transparent and secure platform that enables lenders to provide credit to borrowers without intermediaries or traditional financial institutions.
We also explore the challenges of building a decentralized credit platform, such as managing risk, maintaining privacy, and dealing with regulatory frameworks. We hear from the Jaou and Obinna about how they are navigating these challenges and working to help build a platform that is both compliant with local regulations and accessible to everyone.
Throughout the episode, we touch on the potential of Goldfinch to drive financial inclusion and provide credit to those who have been historically underserved by traditional financial institutions. We discuss the benefits of using decentralized credit platforms, such as lower fees, faster access to credit, and increased transparency, and how these benefits can help to unlock the economic potential of emerging markets.
Overall, this episode of the Bankless Africa podcast provides a fascinating insight into the world of Goldfinch and the potential of decentralized credit platforms to drive financial inclusion and empower communities in Africa and beyond.

Our episode today features Maya, Chief Operating Officer of Nestcoin. Maya built one of the first non-cusotidal on/offramping P2P protocols for Africa and is an advocate for localisation & web3 especially for emerging markets. She has delivered workshops and spoken on this topic for the likes of Developer DAO and FinTech Insider by 11:FS. Maya is very active in helping (web3) African startups obtain foreign investment, having done so for the likes of Nestcoin and Afropolitan DAO.
This episode explores Nestcoin ecosystem and how their new on/offramp protocol is providing a solid onramp/offramp infrastructure for emerging markets. Onboard helps users effortlessly move move crypto(currently stables) from their wallets(metamask, trustwallet) to their bank. This gives users more options to buy, sell and send crypto easily.
One of the major adoption hurdles for crypto in emerging markets such as Africa is the lack of infrastructure. While there’s a need for the technology, the lack of infrastructure makes it very difficult for people to use the tech and also get access to these new types of assets.
Maya is very enthusiastic about exploring and helping to build infrastructure that drives more adoption and makes the tech very easy to use for everyday people.
Maya shares a lot of insights about her personal and career journey and offers some tips for folks interested in working in the web3 spaces. Her vision is to build a world where emerging markets have the opportunity and liberty to secure funding and grow their startup as they see fit without any financial constraints through Web3

Welcome to another episode of Africa’s Crypto Rollup - Sats & Gwei. like we always do weekly, in this episode we bring you the latest and most relevant crypto news and updates across Africa.
Bullish sentiment is gradually returning to the market as we have seen greens across board in the course of the week.
Crypto continues to take center stage in some African countries as the South African Advertising Regulatory Board is adding a clause to its advertising regulatory code specific to cryptocurrency. The aim is to ensure that individuals and organizations publishing cryptocurrency ads follow ethical advertising principles and not provide misleading information to the public. The code requires adverts to clearly state that investments can result in loss of capital and provide well-rounded information about the advertised cryptocurrency token or service.
The African financial system has evolved over the years to include innovative financial instruments and products including loans and credit facilities, overdrafts, mobile money and fintechs - all of which have to some extent aided in bridging the financial divide and promoting inclusion. Blockchain technology offers a next step into the future of the African financial system.
Besides offering the advantages of instant settlements in terms of sending and receiving money, improved efficiency due to the use of immutable smart contracts, increased accountability, improved security and reduced transaction costs, blockchain technology holds the promise of allowing people maximum control over their money.
Meanwhile more families are connected to the grid thanks to a Bitcoin mining project in a rural part of Malawi, which also gives an underdeveloped area economic empowerment. According to a tweet from the project's sponsor, Gridless, 1600 families are now connected to this isolated hydro minigrid in the mountains of southern Malawi. The project is set to transform the educational, healthcare, business and wealth fortunes of the people in the region while minimising the footprint of its environmental impact to the bare minimum.
This and many more in this week’s rollup.

In Nigeria, the Central Bank (CBN) has implemented a cashless policy that limits individuals to withdrawing N500,000 ($222) per week and N20,000 ($44) per day at ATMs, with a 5% processing fee for exceeding the limit. Corporates are limited to N3,000,000 ($1,111) with a 10% processing fee for exceeding the limit. This policy will take effect on January 9, 2023. The CBN is encouraging Nigerians to adopt cashless money and warns of severe repercussions for those who violate the policy.
AAX, a Hong Kong-based crypto corporation, suspended withdrawals for users following an incident where Nigerian users stormed the Lagos offices and assaulted employees. This came after the Nigerian crypto and blockchain advocacy group SIBAN asked them not to do so. The sudden resignation of the platform's vice president, Ben Caselin, has fueled speculation that the exchange may not resume operations.
In South Africa, the Bitcoin Ekasi Scheme is using bitcoin to compensate instructors who teach surfing on the beach as a way to popularize the use of bitcoin and encourage adoption.
In the web3 space, art has gained prominence with the increasing popularity of NFTs and related projects. One such project is the "Crypto Art for Social Impact" auction, which will feature art from various artists and all proceeds will be donated to the World Wildlife Fund.

Cryptocurrency adoption continues to grow in Africa, but some countries have banned its use due to concerns about safety and legality. In many cases, these fears stem from a lack of regulatory policies in the industry. An October 2022 report by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) showed that at least two-thirds of African countries have some form of restriction or policy in place regarding cryptocurrency.
Meanwhile, The Nigerian government is currently reviewing its taxation policies and plans to permit the taxation of cryptocurrency transactions through new provisions in its finance bill. There are currently six countries, including two African countries, that levy taxes on transactions involving digital assets.
The Africa Bitcoin conference recently took place in Ghana, with speakers discussing the potential for Bitcoin to provide a common currency that is free from traditional systems of control. Farida Nabourema, the Director of Togolese Civil Aid, argued that Bitcoin could offer easy access to funding and easier international trading. CEO of Bitnob, Bernard Parah, added that independent financing and development cannot occur without an independently functioning currency.
In partnership with Paxful, the Africa Bitcoin conference has created a training center in Kumasi to educate individuals on the current and potential use cases of Bitcoin. Gridless, a company that builds, designs, and operates Bitcoin mining sites alongside small-scale renewable energy producers in rural Africa, has secured a $2 million seed investment round to help accelerate growth in the sector and distribute and secure the Bitcoin network.
Bitcoin company Strike announced a strategic partnership with Bitnob at the conference. Bitnob is a platform that allows users to send and receive money instantly from any app with Bitcoin support, and the partnership will take advantage of the Lightning Network on Bitcoin. Strike's "Send Globally" feature is currently available in Nigeria, Ghana, and Kenya. Remittance is a major source of foreign exchange for countries in Africa, with Nigeria's recorded remittances contributing more to their GDP than oil. However, a significant portion of these funds is lost in fees.

The future of events is web3. Meet our Guests for this episode, Israelrex, and Cisco, who are building a native web3 event management platform.
Israel is the co-founder of Spacevent and also a contributor in BanklessDAO and AragonDAO. According to him, these DAO communities boost his Web3 journey. Israel has been particularly curious about web3 since getting to know about Bitcoin. His co-founder and friend, Cisco joined BanklessDAO in May 2022 where he learned a lot about the web3 space.
Spacevent was born out of the need to have a web3 native platform for crypto events. The team wanted to create a platform that freed people from the shackles of having to pay for events with their credit/debit cards and all the pain points that comes with web2 payment systems.
Being African, they are sometimes blocked and limited from using normal banking services such as credit/debit cards to pay for events. Spacevents aims to change this forever, providing a crypto-native platform that empowers everyone to attend any event anywhere in the world without payment issues.
Essentially, Spacevent is a Web3 event management and ticketing platform that enables anybody to make, share, locate and attend events anywhere in the world.
With the passing of each year, we have come to realize that web3 enhances festivals and events through the application of blockchain techs such as POAPs, NFTs, Soul-bound tokens, and more. Spacevents aims to build a platform that gives event creators the ability to enhance event experiences through web3 while giving event attendees a better and easy way of searching, applying, and attending events both virtually and in-person.

A lot of us have come across the FTX debacle already, those who held positions of leadership in organisations that had relationships with them are now left with the unimaginable, heavy task of informing their teams of the ever evolving situation.
When asked if he will still participate in the crypto space after all this, FarooQ’s response is a passionate yes, reminding us that there is a bigger mission with crypto that cannot be forgotten. The proven potential of blockchain technology goes beyond making copious amounts of money, or at least, it should. A situation such as this should not deter developers, creators and investors from the entire industry, but rather demand of us a different and intentional attitude. “The challenge with the crypto space for Africa is the necessity for a whole mindset shift that needs to occur.” The finer details of the debacle are still unfolding, but one thing remains, the people affected are more than just wallets and numbers, they are people interested in a new frontier, a new attitude to financial freedom.
FarooQ reminds us that a project like FTX gave many of us access to ample opportunities such as global stock market investing, an opportunity that is often inaccessible to those with African identification documents. What they did should serve as a turning point, a reminder that we still need solutions, transparent solutions that we can verify, beyond simply trusting. The mission is to be Bankless, to embrace technology and to become the leaders of a new & liberated Africa.

Crypto never sleeps, it’s been another lively week filled with activities.
Some organizations such as the IMF are trying to leverage the FTX collapse to push for more crypto regulation across Africa. It’s time to regulate - they say! While some are calling for more regulation, other organizations such as South African exchange Luno, says it has not been affected by the collapse of FTX, even as its sister company Genesis Global Capital faces potential liquidity pressures - Luno uses Genesis for its savings wallet.
Kenya delves into taxing crypto transactions - Plans are underway in Kenya to amend the capital markets law, which will see an introduction of a 20% excise tax on every crypto transaction fee, this move is seen widely as a potentially ineffective strategy to reduce foreign borrowing through the expansion of the domestic tax net.
Should the bill be approved by the Kenyan Parliament, Kenyans will be subject to capital gains tax or income tax to be remitted to the Kenya Revenue Authority for the sale and/or use of crypto.
Crypto Hub Africa has announced its plans to launch the African Crypto Giants awards. This award will serve as a platform to recognize the efforts of innovators and builders who have worked relentlessly to advocate blockchain education in Africa, as well as create amazing products and services that have helped revolutionize the African digital economy.

Access to e-commerce is a basic thing for some, but a sorely needed one for many others.
Peter Alfred-Adekeye created Boom to offer an opening to a world of global trade, reinventing the current markets that small & large businesses have access to. In the creation of Boom, he drew on his knowledge of blockchain technology, particularly with the Pingsta intellectual network.
In the episode, he talks about the evolution of technology, how it has impacted the West, leaving Africa behind to learn what everyone else had already been doing.
Adopting the mindset that allows one to participate in an innovation such as this will take time, but in the same manner that Peter and his team at Boom were willing to spend a decade building and curating what Boom would be about, patience is key to their success.
To learn more about boom, you can visit their website or follow them on Twitter.
You can download the app here: https://apps.apple.com/app/boom-e-commerce-no-banking/id1640059552
What Boom is bringing to the world is the chance at Bankless Commerce!
From the Marketplace, the Wallet, the Messaging App and their Social App, this public Beta phase will determine the extent to which they roll out each of the 4 rungs of Boom, within the next phase of their growth.

Besides losing its license as a Financial Services Provider in countries like South Africa, the FTX incident has left a mark on quite a number of crypto businesses. The CEO of Nestcoin announced the erasure of a significant portion of its operating capital with the collapse and for this reason will have to lay off some of its workforce.
Still on the FTX subject, It would appear that FTX may have made an incorrect listing in its holdings which it recently filed bankruptcy for. AZA finance has challenged its inclusion in the FTX chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, terming it an “Erroneous Inclusion”. The CEO of AZA finance is currently taking active steps to correct these erroneous court filings.
Efforts to advance cryptocurrency education as well as advocate for inclusion are still being made by organizations such as LBank and Crypto Bootcamp, with the aim of bringing these concepts closer to the grassroots in local communities in Africa.
Quickly following up this piece is the news of the expansion of Ripple XRP into the African cross border space through its partnership with MSA Africa. Even more interesting is the effort of Modus to bridge the gap between artificial intelligence and blockchain technology through the very recent launch of its $75M fund.
A quick note: Any organization or persons willing to hire any of the recently laid off Nestcoin employees can send an email to alumni-hiring@nestcoin.com for enquiries.

In this week’s roll-up, we talk about the worst week of the year, we try to extrapolate on the sheer amount of loss that this has caused for people.
The insolvency of FTX has led to the inability for people to withdraw their rightful funds, with hacks, NFTs for funds and strange flights, the entire situation is shaping up to be the most devastating bearish debacle we have seen in a long time, if ever. Kenyans for example lost over $700m because of this, the 134 firms included in the Alameda bankruptcy filing will also be immensely devastated, a handful of which are African based.
The story is ever developing, and community research is heavily encouraged. As mentioned in the podcast, here are some links you can use for research and/or confirmation purposes:
Official Alameda bankruptcy filing https://www.docdroid.net/F0TqEsL/alameda-chapter-11-db-pdf#page=6 Suspicious txns https://etherscan.io/address/0x26C5A34Bc8398fbD395b518ffAb27724D7CC9617#tokentxns
With an average decline of 27.98% in our market watchlist from last week, the overall market sentiment is concerning to say the least.
Sun Exchange is a South African solar power company which is challenging the status quo by giving investors the option to have their payouts done in the South African rand which is typical, or Bitcoin. There are of course pros and cons to both, but Sun Exchange wants to offer the options so they can appeal to all kinds of investors; with the minimum investment being as little as $4, the pool of investors is indeed global.
Data Mynt continues to get into partnerships that seem geared to making them the best service providers in the continent while also encouraging a swifter adoption of crypto. With the Alibaba cloud partnership, cloud storage and crypto are brought closer to home. Africa and Latin America have not yet adopted cloud storage as the west world has, not to say that they should copy that, but they have not been given the opportunity to understand it or access it easily in some cases. Partnerships like these are evidence that we have quite a ways to go still, all that’s needed is intentional movement.
One of the biggest eSports gaming tournaments will be hosted in November by the illustrious Cassava Network & Play1st. Developing economies like ours have not quite had the chance to fully embrace things such as gaming on a grand scale. Slowly though, the entire tech industry is opening up to the possibility of gaming as an exciting and potentially lucrative career option. If you would like to participate in the tournament, be sure to register your clan here and apply for the tournament before the 16th of November.

Crypto practice licensing has taken centre stage with Botswana becoming the first African country to offer Yellow Card a licence to legalize its practice within its borders. This is accompanied by another major win for the crypto ecosystem in South Africa where cryptocurrency has been legally recognized as a financial product. These developments will boost blockchain technology adoption in these countries, with hope set on other African countries to follow suite soon.
Mass crypto education remains the foremost way of creating awareness to onboard Africans into the blockchain space. Binance is again at the forefront of this effort as signalled by its recent collaboration with Utiva to empower youth with tech skills across several African countries.
Gaming in the metaverse is becoming even more popular in the African blockchain space. We're witnessing partnerships and collaborations between indigenous and foreign organizations in the P2E space with efforts targeted at onboarding more people into crypto using this means.
Amidst all the good tidings however, a recent bitcoin mining scam which erupted in South Africa has cost thousands or people losses resulting in over a hundred million rand. Newcomers and enthusiasts are advised to do proper research before investing in any seeming blockchain project.
We sound off with kudos to Binance for having recently bagged an award for innovation and creativity at the very recently held GIITA awards held in Ghana. The space is still growing, with room for involvement. It's not too late to ride the wave!

Sahabia Yakubu is the founder and managing director of DeFi Africa Network, and a blockchain advocate, speaker, and writer from Ghana. His involvement in the blockchain industry spans nearly 5 years, with a particular emphasis on education, community building, and advocacy. He was the African ambassador for MakerDAO and organised a number of meetups at Ghanaian universities. His passion for community building and problem solving was the drive behind the creation of the DeFi Africa Network with the intention of onboarding Africans into DeFi space.
Yakubu states the need for selective masterminds with acute knowledge of the African financial space to create a roadmap to onboard Africans into the DeFi space, as well as develop a model for long-term sustainability. A booming DeFi ecosystem in Africa is key to transforming the continent’s ailing financial economy for the better.
DeFI Africa is an organisation with a mission to, amongst other things, establish industry standards for a thriving Defi space in Africa and advocate for the adoption and use of DeFi technology. Nigeria continues to make headlines. The insane fall in the price of crypto assets and tokens has seen a lot of individuals and countries at large lose faith in crypto, selling off their assets and criticizing the rest of the pack. However, Nigerians still flock to crypto during this time, as usage has been on the high. The country continues to hit new highs and is showing no sign of slowing down. The Vice President of Nigeria can testify to this as he believes that Nigeria has positioned itself as a leader in the African digital economy space. According to an address in Abuja, he believes Nigeria is in a better position to be significant players in web3.
Ghana is having their fair share of web3 education as well. 'The African Artist', Oni Onochi at his exhibition urged Ghana to invest in the Creative Arts sector to drive wealth. With the surge in the NFT space, and reputable companies and artists leaving their digital footprints all across the ecosystem, he sees art as the only way the country can boast of its creative and artistic output.
Despite the fact that we are in a bear market, some companies are still looking to scale even further. African crypto exchange Yellow Card seeks major expansion. After receiving series B funding of $40 million, YellowCard has set their sights on doing more. The African cryptocurrency exchange is looking to scale as the company plans on being the first African crypto unicorn the world has ever seen. With thoughts of getting to all 54 countries in Africa, we can say that there is no stopping these guys.
All these and more in this episode. Do enjoy.

Carbon emissions and their consequential effects on our atmosphere are a major concern for our world today, especially to lower income communities across the world, even though they are often the least contributing to the negative changes.
Mark Lawrence is the founder of Carbon Collectible NFTs, he has a combined total of more than 20 years of program management experience, venture capitalism, centralized finance and insurance from his years of work with Toyota Financial Services. He developed the business model for the Carbon Collectible NFTs (ccNFTs), including the composable NFTs that represent biodiversity impact certificates themselves. He has 3 patents for the ReFi social innovation studio that multiplies, compounds and recycles ESG sponsorship for ccNFTs.
The concern about the effect of carbon emissions on our environments has led to the creation of carbon offset measures as a step to curb the effects in question. Given that a great portion of the vegetation that serves the purpose of absorbing carbon is located in underserved communities, it is only right for the carbon offset industry to be more beneficial to the local forest communities across Africa as well.
Mark states that the clear motive for the ccNFT’s team is to create social impact through the project; by allowing corporations who wish to contribute to carbon offsetting efforts to buy ccNFTs and hold them as digital certificates that prove ownership of carbon credits in these forest communities. The sale itself does not grant physical rights of the forest area sold to the individuals or corporations buying them. Ownership is reserved for the indigenous inhabitants of these local forest communities; the NFTs serve simply as biodiversity impact certificates.
The goal of the project is to add equity and inclusion to climate finance through the use of an open protocol approach and validators in its governance models.
The revenue generated from the project is intended for use in social development, forest management and the empowering of local communities to create sustainable solutions that can be profitable enough to create jobs and enable the funding of social impact projects that will financially liberate these communities and improve their standard of living in a manner that best suits.

Bankless Africa presents Sats & Gwei, a podcast for your weekly crypto news update from all around Africa
The markets seem to have attained some relative stability, with minimal price fluctuations across the board over the last couple of weeks.
Africa is experiencing a rapid surge in the number of blockchain developers, with over $100m raised for the expansion of 41 blockchain startups in the past year alone. Widespread acceptance of blockchain technology has come accompanied by organising of several Hackathons, DeFi meetups, and web3 conferences across several African countries, including Ghana and Nigeria.
The Call for inclusion remains on the rise in the African blockchain space. Projects like the newly launched Cowrie token from South Africa which are often targeted at fostering inclusion and for use as a means of social good are still being created.
The Nigerian blockchain community remains bullish on blockchain adoption regardless of many restrictions imposed by the Central Bank of Nigeria. The P2E space is also on the path to rise to prominence, partly owing to the efforts of Africa Gaming Guilds and other stakeholders.
The African dream of web3 transitioning, acceptance, and adoption of blockchain technology remains undefeated. Beyond a means to create wealth, it offers a platform to create a better future for Africans.

Visual media has always played an important role in learning, and its very rapidly finding interesting use applications in the blockchain education space.
In addition to being a visual artist and storyteller, Chief Nyamweya is also the co-founder of Freehand Studios, a Nairobi-based African animation and social impact studio, a company he co-founded with his wife Sarah. Prior to making the ‘odd’ choice to pursue a career as an artist, Chief was initially trained as a lawyer and a chartered accountant, he practised both of those professions simultaneously. He has been an author and co-author of two graphic novels - Art of Unlearning (2019) and this episode’s focus novel, TRUST (2022).
This episode explores the inspiration and ideal behind the graphic novel “Trust”. Chief states that the purpose of the novel is to be a piece targeted specifically at blockchain education, to take people from a level of minimal knowledge about blockchain technology to a point where they are sufficiently informed about the principles of concepts like decentralised finance, DAOs and other web3 technologies.
Since release, “Trust” has been well received, with the graphic novel and picture adaptation reaching impressive levels of acclaimed recognition. The aim of Trust is to liberate the minds of readers and viewers from the traditional path of thinking about real life applications of technology, and enable them to expand their scope & understanding into a realm that allows them to understand the utility of blockchain technology as it applies to solving real life problems.
With the target demographic being young adults, Trust is set to help its audience in their exploration of the changes that a decentralised economy can bring to the countries all over Africa. Chief emphasises the need of the younger generation to actively participate in the decentralised transitioning of Africa’s economy as the next phase of the African evolution.

Emmanuel Babalola is a pioneer in Nigeria’s Blockchain Landscape. He is the former Binance Africa Director and CEO at Bundle, a social finance platform. Being a founder and member of the SiBAN advisory board, he remains a core influence in the Nigerian and African blockchain space, and a strong believer in impact innovations that drive prosperity on the African continent
Emmanuel expresses his vision to contribute in setting Africa at the forefront of global innovation using blockchain technology, and by collaborating with relevant stakeholders in the industry to provide resources needed to create impactful solutions that have particular use-cases to Africa. The best way to solve the current problems in the continent is to allow in-dwellers to build solutions for the continent.
The question of how best to put the power of blockchain technology in the hands of the ordinary person is one that must be given utmost attention. He cites the advantage that Africa has based on a large population demographic of youths which is indicative of sufficient human resources to champion the cause of blockchain technology in Africa.
Emmanuel speaks on Binance’s educational efforts to teach Africans about crypto, with much emphasis on the youths in the population. Laying much emphasis on the ripple effect of educating a single individual, he reiterates the efficacy of word-of-mouth as a strategy to onboarding more people into crypto. He emphasise on the need for fundamental infrastructure to position Africans to grow and retain talent. Crypto Exchange LBank, targets the African cryptocurrency market with 17 Web3 projects. The exchange aims to facilitate mass adoption of Web3 applications and cryptocurrency investments on the African continent. with multiple growth-oriented projects and initiatives already set up.
Old Mutual, a trusted financial institution in South Africa, gets behind Rand-backed crypto stablecoin. Blockchain technology has a large untapped potential in being part of a solution to many of the pain-points plaguing Nigeria and Africa at large.
Legal practitioner Senator Ihenyen, with his special interest in fintech, blockchain technology and virtual assets practice, is the lead partner at Infusion Lawyers and sitting president of the Stakeholders in Blockchain Association of Nigeria. Senator also currently holds administrative positions in several other organisations centred around blockchain.
He expresses where his concern of the African governments around their approaches on the potential risks surrounding the adoption of blockchain technology and cryptocurrency comes from, given the positively disruptive nature of the technology. He lays emphasis on the need to develop working policies aimed more at minimizing risks, and maximizing opportunities.
As an alternative to bans and strict prohibitions on the use of blockchain technologies, Senator cites the engagement of stakeholders, policymakers and employing the use of sustainable policies to drive engagement as the better approach. This will in turn, foster the growth of the next generation of ideators and innovators.
He states the critical importance of ensuring the adoption of best practices by individuals and enterprises operating in the blockchain space. There is a need for regulation to ensure safety, which is achievable through strategic collaborations and partnerships with local and international regulatory bodies.
SIBAN seeks to foster a conducive environment where open-ended discussions between policy makers and users can be held about the growing concerns on the risky nature of blockchain technology. This is with the aim of transforming the perception of blockchain technology from being simply disruptive, to also bringing it into the realm of acceptance as an innovative force for good.

Bankless Africa presents Sats & Gwei, a podcast for your weekly crypto news update from all around Africa!
This week was so eventful. There was a lot to unpack, but just to give you a few touchpoints, Nigeria and Binance are in talks to create a crypto friendly zone in the country. The Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority ( NEPZA) is also in talks with Talent City as they look to mirror the Dubai Virtual Free Zone.
Nestcoin raised and successfully completed a pre-seed round for Metaverse Magna. With a focus on emerging markets, the company raised $3.2 million to power Africa’s largest gaming DAO. This will be taking the world of GameFi up a notch, and we can’t wait to see how all this unfolds.
Binance continues to spread its tentacles all around Africa as their charity organization, Binance Charity is in collaboration with Women in Tech to train Moroccan women on blockchain. The exchange also launched a zero-fee South African Rand deposit, a policy that took effect on September 7th.
A recent survey of the Ghana cryptocurrency community has shown that adoption is on a steady rise. With 20% of Ghanaian internet users currently owning cryptocurrency, we can see that the country is gaining ground in the crypto space. In more news as regards Ghana, their Mybitstore app becomes the Paxful and Coinbase of Africa with over 250 payment methods.
It is amazing to see how the word about crypto is moving and a thought on where we will be in a couple of years is even more pleasing. 62% of Moroccans have never heard of Bitcoin, with the majority of people informed being youths. Although there was a crypto ban in the country, they are slowly but surely getting more acquainted with blockchain technology.

This episode's guest is Kode, a software engineer with experience in the financial industry. He became fully involved in the blockchain development space in 2018, starting off with Solana, then finally moving into Ethereum with solidity & Polygon. The idea for Revewz was first presented at a Solana hackathon in 2021.
Revewz is a decentralised write-to-earn platform built on the Polygon blockchain; it leverages ERC20 tokens to authenticate & validate consumer evaluations and product transactions. The goal of the platform is to localise some measure of power into the hands of the customer, thus allowing for well-informed buying decisions to be made.
Through the use of blockchain modelling, reviews on the platform are immutable once created, meaning they cannot be deleted; this eliminates the subtle influence that large organisations tend to have over the publics perception of their products/services in the more centralised systems. The everyday consumer now has full ownership of their thoughts & reviews while effectively being onboarded into the Polygon ecosystem through their rewards.
As a reward for creating and validating reviews, either as a user or platform moderator, the Revewz native tokens (RVZ) are allocated based on a smart contract algorithm; depending on the task done, a specific user will receive certain rewards at the discretion of the algorithm. This encourages the growth of a sustainable ecosystem where contributors are rewarded based on valuable contributions to the growth of the platform.
Kode reiterates that the mission of the platform is to maintain a free and fair web3 environment devoid of biases and centralised influences. With its goals in view and working systems in place, Revewz is well on its way to becoming phenomenal in the web3 space.

Nigeria remains a leader in cryptocurrency adoption across African countries, with nearly half of all active users based there. The judiciary of the Central African Republic has moved to ratify initiatives put forward by the executive as regards to adoption of the sango coin by foreign investors, terming them illegal.
Venture capitalists remain optimistic about the prospects for growth in African countries leading the scoreboard in crypto adoption, including Nigeria and Kenya. This relentless adoption of blockchain technology by Africans is causing governments to lift bans, and instead adopt regulatory practices as watchdogs.
The involvement of Binance in blockchain education and awareness programs is not backing down, as they set sights on more target demographics. The involvement of public figures to champion the cause of cryptocurrency is becoming more popular as a means to build trust between the masses and the system.
Regardless of a seemingly plunging market, government bans, regulations, and economic instability, Africans in many countries still see cryptocurrency as the beacon of hope that can potentially change the tides for the better.

The blockchain space continues to grow on a daily basis. Crypto education is getting more widespread as various organizations continue to arrange for events, bringing Web3, crypto, DeFi, and NFTs to a larger audience.
Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange by transaction volume, announced that they will be allowing both deposits and withdrawals in the South African Rand. This, they hope, will increase accessibility and adoption of crypto within the region. Binance also launched a crypto education hub in Cameroon. The exchange platform continues to expand its reach in Africa.
With the year winding down, we are beginning to see the last string of events held by blockchain organizations. The Africa Money and DeFi Summit is set to take place in September, as well as the Crypto Fest 2022, which will be hosted in Cape Town. Topics surrounding DeFi, NFTs, and crypto are sure to be discussed, and people will also engage in some side activities that promise to be a lot of fun.
In other news, the Built with Bitcoin Foundation constructed a school in Kenya. The non-profit organization is looking to provide access to clean water, nutritious food, and quality schools for the locals of the communities where they set up these structures. Yellow Card, a Nigerian crypto start-up also launched a payment service to simplify money transfers, giving Africans an opportunity to send money across borders.

The idea of creating a digitally decentralised network state was non-existent and would have seemed abstract and unachievable without the influence of blockchain technology and web3.
This episode features Eche Emole, founder of Afropolitan,. An alumnus of Flutterwave, Eche is bringing his experience in building and a 10-year wealth of knowledge growing African communities in diaspora to build a network that features the best that Africa and the diaspora offer across art, finance, tech, and media.
Eche shares his vision to establish the world’s first network state through Afropolitan. The vision is to create a country that first exists as virtual communities of Africans, achieve critical mass as a fully functional network state, and then manifest physically in representative geographic locations across the world.
Eche states the fundamental role of blockchain technology and web3 in achieving this goal. The project will leverage web3 principles of decentralisation, ownership of information, as well as blockchain principles of immutability, governance and transparency to build a virtual country, with the goal to showcase the best Africa has to offer, spanning various industries.
Leveraging existing infrastructure to manifest mass physical impact across African cities by correcting defects that currently exist in African countries, especially as relates to governance and availability of equal economic opportunities.
The creation of an effective network state will potentially eliminate biases that have become associated with Africa and progressively, create a country where there is equality, accountability and transparency in leadership and in internal processes. All of these efforts are targeted at building an Africa that Africans can be proud of.

The markets seem to be swinging sideways with significant depreciations in the value of major digital assets across-board. Local crypto communities however, remain bullish on the potential blockchain technology holds.
The pace of innovation in the African blockchain space is not slowing down. A solution to effectively tracking ethical commodities has been created via a partnership between Watr and Parity Technologies. This decentralized technology is key to creating a more open internet which can provide transparency and bolster confidence in the quality of traded commodities.

Decentralized finance has evolved to include the robust range of services that were once native to TradFi.
Arindam Roy is the founder of Pillow Fund, a DeFi platform that makes crypto investment possible for the ordinary person. With a wealth of experience as a crypto investor, community builder and educator, Roy is keen on helping others discover the vast possibilities defi offers to the world of finance.
Pillow is a crypto-powered investment repository that allows users to have a unique experience investing in vetted crypto protocols and earning yields. Through the creation of unique best practices, the fund ensures the security of its users whether the market is in a bull or bear.
The risks with crypto investment, including hacks and scams are eliminated through secure hedging of funds and boycotting high-risk financial practices such as the offering of uncollateralized loans. This ensures the creation of a secure environment for people to safely invest without fear of loss.
The fund employs instruments to avoid pitfalls that currently exist in traditional financial institutions which makes investors prone to loss and has measures in place to ensure that users gain the most in a bull, and stand a near zero risk of loss in a bear.
Arindam mentions that perhaps the most attractive feature of the service is that it is fully liquid and allows users full control over their assets with no barriers to funding or withdrawals.
The goal of Pillow is to help users build a strong investing culture which will translate to wealth creation in the long term. This will be achieved by providing access to vetted, high yield tokens and protocols with guaranteed returns on investment.
User education is key to adoption of decentralized finance technologies. Through its established online communities, pillow aims to onboard many more people to the world of decentralized finance through education of people about what DeFi really is, and the potential it holds for the future of finance.

The uncertainties surrounding crypto still cause some misconceptions all over the world. Africa is not left out as the UN trade body called for the halt of cryptocurrency rise in developing countries. Citing these currencies as financially unstable, the body believes they will cause economic risks.
The CEO of Binance, Changpeng Zhao (CZ), met with the current President of the Central African Republic to discuss crypto adoption and the regulatory framework. CZ seeks to launch a blockchain awareness and education program across Francophone Africa. Also, the Central African States Bank declared its support for the national cryptocurrency nobel initiative.
In other news, Nigeria continues to record high figures in transactions despite their cryptocurrency bans. Between January 2021 and June 2022, Nigerians exchanged N497.35 billion ($1.16 billion) in Bitcoin, demonstrating the growing importance of the virtual currency in the country.
Through funding and grants, the Celo Foundation aims to help African startups scale. Startups can communicate with established partner venture capital firms with the aid of the Celo Africa Web3 Fund to seek funding for scaling business operations. BitDAO is also looking to fund AfricaDAO with $20 million for Web3 adoption in Africa. They joined Polygon and Synthetix to be partners with Africa DAO, which is a new investment fund created to advance Web3 development.

To what extent can blockchain and the decentralisation of scientific processes influence the trajectory of traditional science?
This episode features Joshua Bate, a founder of the DeSci World project, and Dr Jelani Clarke, a core contributor. Joshua’s interest in the sciences comes from an interest in streamlined processes, with DeSci World, he is now seeking to explore new possibilities for making science more people based, giving people like Dr Clarke an opportunity to work with global scientists, while potentially being funded by genuine supporters.
Website: DeSci.World
Twitter: https://twitter.com/DeSciWorld https://twitter.com/JelaniC3 https://twitter.com/jb87ua
They speak on the far reaching influence of science in virtually every aspect of our physical world. The project seeks to correct the structural deficiencies and visible pain points with modern science which are as a result of a purely centralized system, notably, impediments to accessing funding, funding bias, contributor discrimination and limitations to exploring new areas for research work.
The DeSci world project is founded on the strong belief that knowledge from & through science should flow freely without barriers, and also that science should be used as a force to ensure an evolution that puts people first. Science should be purely driven by a motive for true, authentic research and as a force for public good, devoid of external political influences that could purport untruths.
The project will thrive off apolitical funding methods for funding research through contributions from persons interested in that research as well as a general openness to global contributors.
Community mediated governance is a key structure that should exist, it ensures that ethics and best practices in research are preserved and adhered to. There is also the need to implement ideals such as proof of identity and KYC for the purpose of protecting the research ownership rights of researchers, and adding an extra layer of security for community members, such that harmful research does not pass.
DeSci world aims to implement a merging of web3 technologies into the open science space through Web3 tooling, certain DeFi-type processes and blockchain mechanisms to improve on the existing structures of traditional science, all as a step forward to ensure a free, fair and more equitable scientific ecosystem.
To read more on the possibilities of the decentralised science space, the https://ethereum.org/en/desci/ has some useful information.

Cryptocurrency and blockchain technology continue to display unrelenting potential as a force for financial inclusion and accomplishing common social goals, with entrepreneurs in the web3 space using the technology to raise funds for social good projects and bridging the financial gap.
The wave of rising inflation and depreciation of local currencies in Africa has wept over the Nigerian naira, cursing it to plunge to new all-time lows in recent times. The country’s financial regulatory body has blamed speculators for the failure of its initiatives to rescue the naira.
The African blockchain space continues to record wins, including the launch of the Celo Africa Web3 fund in Kenya and the very recent triumph of a group of first year students in a blockchain hackathon organized by a swiss blockchain firm in South Africa.

Blockchain networks are beginning to leverage the rate at which Africans are adopting cryptocurrency. Cardano is one of such, as they aim to onboard Africans by supporting their crypto start ups.
The Central African Development Bank aims to advance monetary integration by creating a common digital currency. On the other hand, the Central African Republic (CAR) launched their Sango coin. But the project got off to a rocky start.
In other news, South Africa's inflation hit 7.4%, the highest in 13 years. This must have heavily swayed the result of a survey conducted that shows that more than half of South Africans would invest in crypto if banks provided a platform for knowledge acquisition.
Nigeria, boasting the second largest market for cryptocurrencies in Africa, prides itself on having the best Bitcoin regulations in Africa. This happens after the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) developed a stream of policies and regulations aimed at making the digital asset space safer for current players and potential investors in the space.

An ailment in the global financial system that decentralized finance aims to fix is the growing wealth divide and inequitable distribution of wealth across countries of the world.
This episode features Anna Stone, an accomplished Web3 innovator, growth leader and co-founder of GoodDollar.org, a social-impact protocol, and DAO that delivers a crypto UBI to hundreds of thousands of people around the world and leverages free market incentives to pay for building a more equitable world since 2020.
Disparities in wealth distribution between the extremely wealthy and the poor are a defect in the global social and financial structure. This gap continues to widen, with the problem remaining unsolved. The GoodDollar initiative was launched with the goal to use decentralized finance and blockchain technologies to reach the most financially underserved persons throughout the globe, persons who lack the know-how and infrastructure to tap into the potential of decentralized finance.
There is no certainty that the wealth gap will ever completely be bridged. However, there is an outcome in which resources can be distributed more fairly among people by leveraging the use of blockchain technology and cryptocurrency as a medium to impact this change and ensuring that all persons at least earn a Universal Basic Income(UBI).
Anna speaks of the significance of impact DAOs in today's world through the creation of new incentive models to solve existing problems and a driver for equitable wealth distribution to
members of the system. She shares her perspectives on the role cryptocurrency has played in fundraising for good causes, the ideology behind the GoodDollar initiative as a global organization for creating equal economic opportunities and social equity for all, and their strategic goals for the future.

How has the emergence of DAOs impacted the web3 culture in Africa?
