The Coach Is In: Recent Episodes

Chely V. Esguerra

A podcast about coaches, with coaches. Have you ever wondered about the lives of people who have made it their job to support the growth and fulfilment of other individuals? This podcast is all about that. My name is Chely, and I am the host and creator of The Coach Is In. Every episode, I interview coaches and ask them about their personal stories. Sometimes, I interview mentors and therapists, too. What was the path like to where they are now, where else would they like to get to, what do they do when things get tiring, what tires them, what makes them laugh, what tools they rely on in life, and other corners of true and good conversations. Making this podcast is also my way of sharing what I learn from them with the hopes that someone, somewhere will find them useful, too. Connect on Instagram @thecoachisin.pod

In today’s episode, I get to chat with Jessica Bensch. She’s a multi-awarded organizational culture change champion, a diversity and inclusion advocate, a psychological safety mentor and coach, as well as a public speaker.

Jessica and I talk about the earlier chapters of her life, her core values and why psychological safety matters to her, when you need to use your voice, the intersections of project management and culture change, the relationship of feedback, timing, and positional power, and more.

I hope this conversation stirs insights in you.

In today’s episode, I get to chat with Dannette Haley, Head of the Career Development Unit at the International Committee of the Red Cross. As colleagues, this episode is particularly special for me because a common thread runs through Dannette and myself - our commitment to the mission of our organization.

We chat about Dannette’s journey to coaching, who she is beyond being a coach, how she’s actually been coaching her entire life, what people would be surprised to know about her, what it means to be a coach within an organization, what she’s worked on in herself and what she’s working on continuously, what she’s grateful for, and what she’s looking forward to in the future.

In today’s episode, I get to chat with accessibility advocate, author, and coach Dave Bahr who is focused on demystifying the public's perception of how to interact with people with disabilities. As founder of In-Sightful Living, he helps organizations enhance their systems, environments, and cultures to be supportive of persons with disabilities. Blind from birth, he teaches that having a disability is not a hindrance, but an asset.

We talk about Dave’s takeaways from studying coaching and how to begin being an advocate for persons with disability, the challenges and victories of this line of work. We also talk about love, what it means to grieve, being funny, the musicality of our voices, and more. I hope you enjoy.

Pilot episode, woot woot!

There are a few things in life that are better than mustering the courage to go for new and exciting goals, having your favorite humans support you, and then getting to do your new and exciting goal with your favorite humans. In this first ever episode of The Coach Is In, I get to do just that.

I chat with one of my very best friends, Anna Oposa, who is the co-founder and chief mermaid of non-profit organization Save Philippines Seas. As part of her work, she mentors youth leaders who are committed to marine conservation. We talk about what’s behind her career path, her thoughts on coaching and how she imagines herself celebrating her 80th birthday.

True and good things we cover:

  • Anna’s earlier ambitions
  • What led her to being a marine conservationist
  • Anna’s own take on coaching and mentoring
  • The mentors and coaches she had who left a remarkable impression on her
  • Anna’s mentorship style
  • When and how a mentor-mentee relationship begins and ends
  • What it looks like to have a healthy energy exchange with a mentee/client
  • How Anna practices her mentoring skill in day-to-day situations
  • Why active listening is one of the skills that everyone can benefit from
  • The things that Anna is coaching herself on
